Another rivetting story involving a relationship between Emily and her brother’s five friends when Emily joins them all for an idyllic month together. Henry tells his sister to keep away from his friends, saying they are all bachelors and players. Then Henry tells his friends that Emily is off limits and they are to keep away from her. Instead Henry suggests a wager, with two provisos, followed by weeks of non-stop partying. While the group feel like they are betraying Henry, this doesn’t stop them; they all agree to let Henry win the wager and to make a new one of their own. I enjoyed reading this book and would have no hesitation in recommending it.
Emily didn’t expect to spend her summer vacation in New Jersey with her brother, Henry, but it is her only alternative as she has nowhere else to stay. While Henry agrees, he isn’t particularly excited about it, as he currently has five of his friends staying with him. With 9-years difference between the two, Emily and Henry have never spent much time together, so this will be the perfect time for them to get to know each other better. Henry is very protective of Emily and has very old-fashioned ideas of what it means to be a man and a brother; what he is certain of is that as far as his friends are concerned, Emily is off limits and they are to stay away from her. Henry proposes a wager amongst his friends, but there are two catches. It was certainly going to be a wild month, with Henry arranging one crazy party after another, each one trying to outdo the one before. Before too long, his friends have had enough. As far as they are concerned, Henry can win the bet; they have a bet of their own to make involving Emily. The group are close and have the same values; no girl could ever come between them, not even Emily, but the tension in the house is becoming overwhelming. Emily cannot understand how everyone can be okay with their situation, but the group tell her she doesn’t see herself the way they do; beautiful, idolized, perfect, fragile, worthwhile, while Emily assumed she was just plain. Nevertheless, Emily seems to hold some power and control over them, while they make her feel complete. Henry is beginning to notice certain things and while he is not angry, he is disappointed. Emily is not going to walk away from the group; she cannot. But when Henry walks into a compromising situation, an amazing, intense moment goes from perfect to horrifying in less than a minute. Henry’s face is almost too much to bear; anger, disappointment, sadness and betrayal. Then he retaliates; so what happens now?
