Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar arranged in dictionary format and accompanied by rich example sentences that will help students of this book be able to acquire the necessary knowledge to master advanced Japanese.
These are a great set of dictionaries. I had originally started by buying the intermediate and basic, which I rarely used while I was in school, since the textbooks from which I was working already taught the grammar. I've found them more and more useful after leaving college when I turned to self-study and found myself wading through Japanese books on my own. It's also a useful supplement for studying for the JLPT (especially when studying out of grammar books written in Japanese), because it does an excellent job not only explaining meaning and formation, but it also explains some of the nuances and differences from other related grammatical terms.
If you are an intermediate or advanced student and considering buying one of these dictionaries, I would recommend buying all three. Even if you don't feel that you're ready for the Dictionary of Advanced Japanese, I would recommend buying it in addition to the other two, because it has the most comprehensive index that includes entries from the first two books. (Meaning you can search in one index instead of three individual ones.)
Invaluable at this level. Each grammar point includes how it might be translated into English, a concise summary of how it's used, a breakdown of a key sentence, and at least 4-8 example sentences. After that, it gets into the nitty-gritty: it covers formation of the grammar in more detail, unusual use cases, as well as "related expressions," which turn up fairly often as you move away from "use X to say Y" and into "well...it depends" territory.
Easier than I expected to look up points - they're sorted alphabetically by romanization rules, plus there's both English and Japanese indexes. An especially useful tool is that if the grammar isn't in this volume, but is in the Beginner or Intermediate volumes, it'll give the page number to find it in those - I-333, for example, or B-263.
About 85% of the grammar I've been reviewing for N1 was findable in this volume. Another 5% can be found in the Intermediate volume. The remaining 10% seems to be scholars splitting hairs on what counts as "grammar".
This series was easily the best reference tool for learning grammar that I ever came across. If textbooks have you confused, just dive into this book and you're sure to come out with a much better understanding of the nuances. Also SUPER nice that they are cross-referenced within the different volumes.
There is not a more useful resource for Japanese grammar than this book along with the Beginner and Intermediate editions. If you are serious about learning Japanese, you simply *must* have these books. They're a bit expensive, but worth it.
[Copy-pasted from my review of the Basic Japanese Grammar volume, as my opinion really applies to the books as a complete set.] As a dictionary, I hope it's obvious that I did not literally read this as I would a novel. I've turned to it (and its two accompanying volumes) countless times since I first purchased it, and it's proven itself worth the investment! Japanese language learners of any level, beginning to advanced, should find it a very useful companion to their main studies. There are in-depth explanations of all the grammar and plenty of example sentences and clarification points for each dictionary entry, plus additional information at the beginning and in the appendices. If you're serious about learning Japanese, this book is a must-have!
Like the two preceding volumes, this is an absolutely essential dictionary of Japanese grammatical patterns. Each pattern is presented with numerous examples, including both sentences and phrases, as well as copious explanations of the grammatical concepts in question.
My only criticism is that some of the grammatical phrases here are actually adverbs. Having said that, the extensive examples are extremely useful to any student.
I don't know how anybody could seriously study Japanese without this series. It is absolutely essential for success.
This is an exceptional text for both studying grammar and as a reference tool. Each entry is broken down into example sentences, formation rules, detailed usage notes, and comparisons with other points of Japanese grammar that are related. I own a small library of Japanese study materials and reference books and have looked through many more than what I own. That being said, this is the single most thorough book on advanced Japanese grammar that I have come across, and the entire series of these dictionaries are all worth looking into if you're a student of Japanese or need Japanese references in your daily or work life. However, I will warn that if you're studying for the Japanese proficiency exam, especially N1, you will want to look into other texts as certain points of grammar that appear in the text are covered in other volumes from this series or not at all.
