Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. What’s yours..?
When the end came, it came fast. The Eko virus emerged from behind the North Korean DMZ. It spread like wildfire, burning through the world in a matter of weeks. Rumors spread that it was a a dying regime lashing out with deadly fury.
Millions died. Then billions. And then the blackouts began.
The cyber weapon hit hard, bringing a staggering world to a shuddering stop. Our cars, planes, power grid, communications networks, the internet … everything failed. It might have been humanity’s last shot at stopping the spread of the virus. But by then it was already too late. Society wobbled on the edge of disaster, and then plunged right off.
For Alexander Early, surviving the apocalypse was the easy bit. He played pool and drank warm beer while a perfect storm destroyed the world. But when the lights went out, Alex knew it was time to get the hell out of Dodge. Five years before, tragedy had forced him away from the family farm in Virginia to a life in the city. Now the end of the world called him back.
Getting out of the city is only the start. Alex will face a virus he can't even see, and an enemy he's ill equipped to fight. But he'll have to learn fast.
Because he'll soon discover that the end of the world was no accident...
Riley Flynn is the kind of man who rarely gets to write about himself in the third person. He likes long walks on the beach, and falls asleep at night dreaming about the apocalypse - and how he plans to survive. Zombies and EMPs are Riley's kind of thing, but he has a special place in his heart for biowar, and the end of the Internet Age.
The author is obviously British, torch for flashlight, aerial for antenna, bloke for dude, on show for on display and so forth and his complete lack of familiarity with firearms and how Kevlar armor works. Don't they at least have YouTube over there? He also obviously used Google maps to pick out place names for the Detroit, Michigan area but didn't look at them too closely at them as La Salle is across the river in Ontario, Canada and Hennepin Point is on Grosse Ile in the middle of the river. Neither is on the way to Toledo from Detroit. Also, maybe some of the things the author mentions as in Detroit will be there in 50 years, in 10 not a chance. But I could forgive a lot of that as artistic license. What I can't forgive is that the protagonists are annoying, stupid, and unlikable. Also, the way the Government acts just makes no sense. Where did all of the troops come from to go house to house in towns and padlock people in their homes? That's a lot of locks and screws. Plus we have maybe 2M active, and reserve troops as well as federal law enforcement total for a population of 320M. But the author describes a totalitarian regime with checkpoints everywhere and instant mutant zombie biker gangs popping up everywhere on day 1 in the rural areas. I know it's supposed to be 10 years in the future and anything can happen but I feel like he's confused the U.S. with some Judge Dredd esque dystopian future. Maybe in England bub, not here. That's why we have the guns. :-)
I didn't enjoy this book very much. I didn't like the characters, so didn't feel a connection to any of them. The writing style may have played a role, but I know I won't be reading anymore of this series.

Summary:
Received for an honest review.
Alex lived a quiet and unexciting life, that was until the day everything changed. Alex was talked into going to a paint ball game that combined with a war scenario where Alex had a surprising victory. His friend Tommy was surprised at how well he did. Little did they know that all those skills would be invaluable in the coming war. Alex went to Tommy's home for the evening, that is until people started to die all around them. Tommy had been preparing for the end of the world, but as it went down Tommy and Alex's struggle to survive tested everything they ever learned. This was the ultimate story about the end of the world and the struggle to overcome all obstacles. The subject of the end of the world has been discussed, but the many unique characters, their interactions with each other, and their desire to maintain civilization in spite of the lawlessness of some of the people they encounter was inspiring. The mystery of how the virus came to be and who was responsible remains unknown as Tommy and his friends continue to arrive at their goal, Alex's families home in the country.
I didn’t mind this book that much. I enjoyed the plot, how the world has fall apart before the collapse but because everyone relays on the internet for information, it surprises them when it all falls down so quickly.
The parts I didn’t like, and the reason it didn’t get more stars is because of the characters. Alex and Timmy are just blah. Timmy had some promise when he was introduced but when most of his prepping falls short and then gets sick he kind of becomes useless. And Alex just gets it. Things just click for him in this new world
And the author is clearly British. If you are going to write a book about Americans in America, for American we should talk/write like an American and use the worlds for things that we use. Flashlight instead of torch, dude instead of bloke

I really enjoyed this book! Sure the beginning was a tad slow, but i promise if you stick with it, you will really enjoy it. What happens when the average joe is forced to do things not so average? How would you survive if suddenly you world is turned upside down by a virus? A great start to what i am hoping will be a fantastic series, with government conspiracies, enemies everywhere, a rising death toll, Alex and his companions must do everything they can to survive and make it to safety.
An RF Apocalyptic Novel/A Ravenging Plague/Mongolia to Civilization
RF has penned an end of the world novel that appeared to be caused by a plague. However, as time passes two men and a pregnant woman begin to discover certain events that appeared to be planned as opposed to happening naturally. Our threesome are trying to dribble from Detroit to Virginia but have many obstacles to overcome. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
I very rarely put down a book but this one was horrific. Moving at less than the speed of smell and mimicking every other poorly written "SHTF" glorified comic book I couldn't stop quick enough. This is the problem with letting anyone become an "author " on Amazon.
This was a wild ride. I really enjoyed this end of the world book. There are alot of these kinds of books out there and this one was really stood out. I really enjoyed reading it.
This book started really, really slow. However, once it picked up. Alex and Timmy become resourceful. I can see how this is more realistic in more ways than one. Government trying to corral you at first and then totally loose control of the situation. Good book!
I’m a huge fan of Riley Flynn and of a apocalyptic story, and this series didn’t disappoint. I found myself reading til all hours of the night. Edge of your seat reading and characters that you can really get behind. Hope there’s a fourth book!
