A Joyfully Jay review.

To be perfectly clear, this is an autobiographical account of the author’s dating experiences. It covers a lot of his early dating experience—during his tweenage years when “dating” means calling your romantic interest and telling them you played video games and figuring out if they “like” like you. In some regards, it was a sweet reminder of the innocence of youth. In other regards, I was amazed to have this insight into the real-life experience of someone growing up in a time I would have absently thought of as “more or less progressive.”

One of the recurring themes in Jones’ early romantic encounters is the way society was just not ready for same sex couples. This may have taken place after Ellen came out, but clearly the confessions of a TV star would not cause an age of enlightenment in Wherever, Texas for Jones. More than a couple of his youthful relationships were hampered or downright broken because the world was not ready for teenagers to be gay.

Premise of the book is fairly close to the blurb: Dimitrius is waiting for his current boyfriend at Starbucks, because “They need to talk”. While waiting, he reviews all his past crushes, love interests, and boyfriends starting from the tender age of about 11 or 12, each chapter devoted to turning point – a different boy – in his life.

This was, honestly, depressing.

If that was what the author was aiming for, he succeeded.

I was hoping there would be some humor mixed in, somewhere, anywhere, but if there was it was drowned in whichever looser was cheating or lying to Dimitrius at that particular moment and I missed it.

After a while, the chapters became somewhat repetitive – Dimitrius meets a boy, refuses to fall in love with the boy (because “Love” is something that happens to other people and he’s had his heart ripped to shreds enough), boy cheats on Dimitrius, Dimitrius channels his Ice Queen and tells boy to go to Hell.

If there were some funny anecdotes, moments of humor, anything to lighten the mood, I probably could have bumped up the rating, but as the chapters progressed, the stories came across as critical, whining, with numerous instances of the “Ice Queen” making an appearance, and eventually, just sad.

And I don’t know if this was a formatting issue, but there were a lot of missing “L’s”. Really = real y, stil, yel, etc. It was almost like the “L” key wasn’t working consistently on the author’s keyboard. Or, again, maybe a formatting thing between mobi and epub or some other online self publishing software?

So, I’m sorry, but this story didn’t work for me. Perhaps other readers will be able to relate more to the trials and tribulations of dating and get more out of the book than I.

I felt at times while reading this book, this story could had transcribed Into a plot of my own dating woe's. Like the Author had taken personal snippets withdrawn from my past and present. Of course, being a somewhat Introverted Virgo as I am, nailed It right on the head as well. I found myself thoroughly enjoying the book, seeing how I could easily relate to so much of Dimitri's saga. This In turn made It hard to put the book down, as It made me even more curious to see how the story line would unfold. If you ever assumed your dating life was the pits, your viewpoint will change after reading this book. Great read and highly recommend! Fingers crossed for a sequel!

A look back on the relationships in your past is always challenging because none of them worked for you. Hence why you are look back and commiserate on your history. i was sadden though because this really was a long list of unmitigated disastrous relationships. Although this was listed as a romance, i was disappointed that Dimitrius didn't find his HEA.

I do think we learn from each relationship and become more aware of what we need from people and life. I will look forward to the next installment that does offer some romance and a shared loved relationship. The writer has had enough of the 'its not working' relationships.

I received an ARC at no cost from the author

Well. If you’re looking for hearts and roses and happy endings, this might not be for you. But if you’re looking for real and raw and hopeful endings? Yeah, this is definitely the book for you. No sugarcoating, no fluff. Just brutal honesty. You know.....like life.

Admittedly, I rarely read non-fiction and there's a reason for that. So often, non-fiction can be dry and even depressing, and let's face it, we get enough of that from watching the news. With that in mind, I went into this one with some preconceived notions. What I found was nothing like what I expected, in a very good way. With candor and wit, the author presents several of his personal dating disasters in this quick read, some more outrageous than others. The book is well-written and kept me turning pages. If you're looking for sunshine and roses, this isn't it, but it is a witty and engaging read and in the end, there is hope.

It took me much longer to finish this one, I made breaks because unexpectedly I found myself in Dimitrius and his problems.

This book isn't a romance story even though it is about relationships and some bad experiences in this area. There is no happy ending and I can't agree with Dimitrius decision.
This is a completely different book from what I normally read, it is surprising, unpredictable but also kind of sad. Sure, Dimitrius keep trying to find a partner, he believes in true love even though he never felt it, but on the other hand we see that ALL his efforts was wasted on cheating psychos.

Awkward book on how not to love

My Horrible Gay Dating Life was ok. The main character Dimitrius was a bit of a doormat letting everyone walk all over him putting himself in awkward and emotionally compromising positions.

Is this how it is

Has the merit of being true but the life of an out gay youth through school and college as experienced here feels like from another planet to me who grew up in the 60s
