The spring of 1998, Karlee Baxter Wilcox came back to her hometown, Monroe, North Carolina, to bury her mama. She soon discovered her mama had been hiding secrets from her since she was a small child. These secrets start to unfold when she opens a box hidden in the back of a closet. Opening this box will create an entirely different world that Karlee never dreamed was waiting for her. Will Karlee have the strength and courage to face the secrets, or will she close the box keeping everyone from knowing the truth? If you like funny, heartwarming Southern stories with a touch of mystery, you will fall in love with the characters in The Problem with Pearls.
Picking up a book from this author is always like sitting down with a best friend and listening to a heart touching story..Phyllis McManus takes readers to 1998, That is when Karlee Baxter Wilcox has to head to the home town where she no longer lives, but where her mother has passed away. When Karlee gets to town, she finds herself grieving for her loss, but lucky to have her friend Lexie to help ease the pain. The one thing Lexie may not be able to help with are some secrets that were buried and are about to see the light of day. I love this story, which is touching and feels so real you almost think it is something you could easily be dealing with. The characters are brought to life with emotional reality by an author who not only wrote this special story, but so many others.
I didn't want this story to end, this story is about coping with loss, grief, forgiveness, hope, love and family. I loved all the characters, well, except Aunt Charlotte and her husband, they were difficult to tolerate. The characters, and places were so very real to me, as if though I was right there with them. The way this author uses descriptions of the places, it was like I was there, feeling the morning breeze and warm sunshine coming in through the open window upon waking first thing in the morning! I got hungry reading about the muffin sausages, and sweet rolls, that Grandma B. made, I could almost savor them! The feelings of loss, grieve and then hope and love, felt by the characters, and surrounded by family and friends, made this an insightful read! I highly recommend this book!
Horribly written. The dialog was too stilted and fakey. The story line a stretch: who meets a father for the first time and immediately calls him Daddy. Same with the grandmother; and she immediately asks Grandma to move in with her?? The characters should have been developed more. There was no real conflict in this absurd happily ever after story line. Being handed millions upon a divorce and stays best friends with ex mother-in-law? Close to her mother but hides her divorce? Visits mama's grave and tells her she's never coming back to see her? And the entire book took place in less than a month. Just such an unbelievable story. I skimmed the last 50 pages in less than 10 minutes.
This was basically a feel-good, faith-filled story. While it was a bit too pat -- with everything working out as it should! -- I found it interesting nonetheless. The book could use a good editing though -- the author is way too fond of commas!
