For kids who jump to conclusions and move too fast, this would be a good book helping them learn the value of taking the time to think things through. But for kids who need to be poked and prodded to get going, this may give them an excuse to not get going yet. ("I'm thinking it through!") It was fun to see the science involved in the planning, but I'm not sure soap box races really go fast enough that curving the front would make a difference.

Grade: 2nd

Children who ride bikes don’t know that they’re experiencing friction and doing science. What is a better way to have children learn about science than to have them read about going for a joyful ride on their bikes? Children may actually learn about something they knew nothing about. Students who reads this book will explore science through their interest in experimenting with their biking abilities.

Sara wants to soapbox racer, but first she had to learn a few things. She figures out the concept of friction and builds her racer in a way where she has more control of it. This book is good for introducing the idea of friction to children.
