The Detective Ellie MacIntosh thrilling series continues in Kate Watterson's Severed.
When the district attorney's daughter is brutally murdered, her boyfriend is immediately arrested. It should be an open-and-shut case, except homicide detectives Ellie Macintosh and her partner Jason Santiago sense something off.
Randy Lane maintains his innocence, and his prominent family is at the center of a much larger federal investigation which raises more questions than answers. Blocked by federal agents at every turn, the people that MacIntosh and Santiago are able to question have a bad habit of soon turning up dead.
As the body count rises, the pressure is on to exonerate Lane and find the real killer before one wrong move by MacIntosh and Santiago turns fatal. And this time, there is so much then just their lives at stake.
Writing as both Emma Wildes and Katherine Smith, Kate Watterson has over thirty published books to her credit, plus five Eppie nominations, one Eppie win for best historical erotic in 2007, a RWA Lories win, WisRWA 2005 final for best historical romance, and is a CAPA nominee. She loves suspense and to write erotic stories in the genre is a special treat.
I love this series! Ellie MacIntosh and Jason Santiago make a great team and now Ellie is pregnant with his child. They know they won't be allowed to partner each other much longer because of their involvement but first they have a case to solve. The district attorney's daughter has been murdered and he's asked that MacIntosh and Santiago handle the investigation.
I love the developing relationship between Ellie and Jason. They're in love but are still learning about each other and sometimes Jason gets a little too overprotective when it comes to the woman having his baby. Ellie is fiercely independent and struggles at times with letting Jason help her. The author has done an excellent job building on these two characters and I have to admit I find their personal lives almost as interesting as the cases they solve. I thoroughly enjoyed this and home I don't have to wait long for the next one.
Stumbled upon this book by chance, although this book is 6th in Ellie Makintosh series, there are few references to previous cases.... The writing is simple, and complications keep on increasing. You will be on the edge right till the second last chapter as to how it’s going to end.... will surely be looking for the previous books in the series.... happy reading
This latest Ellie novel was a turducken of a murder mystery - a murder wrapped in another murder, wrapped in still yet another murder. I must admit, the mystery parts of the novel didn't interest me too much (how can I be invested in characters I only "met" in this novel? Although, I did have a little sympathy for Randy. However, as others said to him, he's young, and will be able to meet someone else in the future, so, yes, he went through crap but he should recover).
Once again, I'm just here for the 'ship. The relationship between Ellie and Jason, that is. I just love how their relationship has evolved slowly but surely over the course of these six novels. Can't wait to read about their further adventures (especially once the nugget is born!).
One last thing: this has been a continuing theme through all these books, but the writing style took me a while to get used to. The changes in topic are so abrupt. Within the same sentence, two different topics will be uttered by a character. I don't know if this is how Wisconsinites normally talk, or if it's just the author putting a particular manner of speech into her characters to make them stand out from other murder/mysteries/thrillers/suspense novels.
Another great book in the series. I like how Ellie's and Jason's relationship continues to evolved from co-workers to friends to so much more. The mystery of who killed the Janet Locke kept me guessing until the ending. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a suspenseful romantic mystery.
This one’s a doozy. The mystery keeps going until the very end, and even then things aren’t completely wrapped up. I wonder if the next book will pick up part of this mystery or if we’re left guessing. Probably the latter.
Note- some swearing, violence of course, and alcohol use
This book was so dragged on. I could't wait to finish it. Sooooo many names confusing. terrible editing. Just bad. I will never read one of her books again
This is actually 2 1/2 stars , just not quite good enough for 3 stars. This is the first book I have read by Kate Watterson so I do not know if this is her usual writing or a one off book. First the writing for some reason did not resonate with me and I felt like the story especially in the middle just kind of dragged on. There were too many "people/cases" to follow that really did not play well into the main story. I did not care for the character Jasonin this story. I also did not like the attitude that oh well Randy will move on, come on ?!?!?!
At this point with so many other options out there I will probably not pursue this series.
