By the time I finished this book, I felt like a local. I understood the important role the island has played in the course of our country's history. I'd met many of the island's important personalities through the book's extensive interviews, and I had my own opinions about the positive and negative impacts of tourism on the island and the politics of the Outer Banks.
This is not just a guide book. Read this book before you travel to Ocracoke Island and you'll not only know about all the sites and attractions, you'll understand and appreciate them. You'll know how they managed to keep so many miles of unspoiled beach and how all the landmarks, some charming and others not so charming, ended up where they are.
Ocracoke: Its History and People is a great read if you've ever visited the Outer Banks or think that you ever might.
We went to Ocracoke for our honeymoon, went back for our 5th anniversary, and I read this in preparation for our imminent trip back for our 10th! This book is over 20 years old, with some updates; but the core of the book is a history and a number of 1st person accounts, which don't go out of date. The interviews of various residents give a very good picture of the island and its issues. A special place for us!
