Kathryn "Kappy" King is happy being a plain-spoken unmarried odd-woman-out in her Pennsylvania Amish hometown. Her talent is making the special kapps local women use to cover their hair. But her skill at uncovering trouble in this quiet valley is about to be truly tested . . . At first, young Sally June Esh's tragic death doesn't look like murder. Even in peaceful Blue Sky, collisions between buggies and Englisch cars aren't unheard of. Still, the Eshes are skilled drivers used to delivering their popular pickles for miles around. And after Kappy notices Sally's buggy was deliberately run off the road, her ex-Amish friend Edie gets strange texts saying the crash was no accident . . .
Kappy won't let her community's silence keep justice from being done. And even though a still-shunned Edie thinks of moving back to the city, she and Kappy start rooting out secrets about the Eshes' long-time neighbors--and new pickle-producing rivals. But when they learn that Sally's brother is secretly courting an Englisch girl, their investigation takes a disturbing turn . . .
I'm a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.
I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I've retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I'm from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son--a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!
I love homemade tacos, nail polish, and romance novels--not necessarily in that order. I'm a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I'm shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.
I believe that God is love. I guess that's why I adore romances.
I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I'm a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that's me June Cleaver with a laptop.
I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I'll get to it or I won't, either way I'm good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I'm alone on this last one, and again, I'm good with it.)
Favorite movies--(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940's movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven't seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn's and Audrey's.
Need a funny and relaxing read, try the 2nd Amish mystery about pickles. Nappy and Edie are on their way to pick up her brother. The drive is stalled by a yellow buggy overturn with white pickles scatter about the area. Pickles are everywhere as the driver was on his way to deliver an order of pickles. The driver Sally June Esh is killed in what like and hit and run accident. But wait could it be murder? If so, who was the intended victim? Edie received a text message saying it was deliberate as he saw a black car drive directly for the buggy. Nappy and Edie decide to explore the matter instead of turning the phone over to the police. There are romances beginning for both girls. Nappy is slowly beginning to leave her home. Edie is staying for her brother Jimmy who loves animals and now wants a goat and pig along with the dogs and gerbils. There is a slight twist at the end. I recommend this book and series.
Many thanks to Kensington Press for a review copy. The opinions expressed are my own.
This is the first Amish mystery I've read by Amy Lillard but far from the first book I've read by her . There were some laugh out loud moments in this book for me. It kept me entertained trying to figure the ins and outs of the mystery. Every time I thought I had it solved the book took off in a gallop in a whole other direction with a new suspect.I really enjoyed reading 'Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper'. There were twists everywhere, that I didn't expect, which kept me guessing until the end. Pub Date 26 Jun 2018 I received a copy of this book from the author/ Kensington Books through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Kappa is happy being and unmarried odd woman out in her Amish town making Kapp’s for women. Her friend Edie is a shunned Amish woman who has moved back to take care of her brother. A local Amish woman delivering pickles in her buggy is forced off the road and killed. Kappa is hot on the trail looking for the person who did it and wonders if it is a local woman who is also trying to sell pickles. The book seemed slow going.
The Kappy King series is so much fun to read. In this book, second of the series, the unlikely friendship of Kappy King and her neighbor, Edie Peachey, former Amish and now Englischer, grows as they put their sleuthing skills to investigate the accident of a young Amish girl. Sally June Esch was killed while traveling in her family buggy to deliver a load of pickles. She was hit by a car that left the scene. At first it appears that maybe it was a hit and run but then someone sent Edie a text giving clues that maybe it was an intentional murder. The camaraderie between Kappy and Edie, and even Edie's special needs brother, Jimmy, is funny as Kappy tries to understand Edie and her Englisch vocabulary and thoughts. Kappy is getting used to having Edie around and wants her to stay on her mothers's farm but Edie never planned to stay after attending her mother's funeral and settling her affairs. What would happen to Jimmy if she left? Kappy has put the relationship on hold with her former beau even though he wants to marry her but someone else might be interested in Kappy. Edie and Detective Jack Jones still seem interested in each other. This is a fun series to read and interesting characters to get to know and always a mystery to solve. I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Publishing through NetGalley. All the thoughts and opinions stated are mine only. Thanks to the publisher for the opportunity.
KAPPY KING AND THE PICKLE KAPER ( AN AMISH MYSTERY #2) AMY LILLARD
Once again, Amy Lillard takes us back to the Amish community in Blue Sky Pennsylvania, the home of Kappy "Kathryn" King the kapp maker to the Amish. In this book, Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper, we find Kappy, her ex-Amish friend and neighbor Edie Peachey just recovering from solving the murder of Edie's and her brother Jimmy 's, murder. Things don't stay quiet in Blue Sky for very long. Sally Jane Esh, the daughter of the local pickle makers, is involved in a tragic buggy and vehicle accident, while on her way to deliver a order of the Esh's pickles to the local store. Who would kill someone over pickles. Could it be the new member of the community who wants everyone to eat her green pickles instead of the traditional "church pickles". Or was Sally Jane really the target of this tragic accident. To find out the answers to all these unsolved questions, read the delightful story of Kappy and Edie and the antics they get themselves into, as they try to solve this latest "murder" in Blue Sky Pennsylvania. You will not want to put this book down until Kappy and Edie solve this latest crime. I was provided with a copy of this book by the author and publisher and this is my honest review of Kappy King and the Pickle Kapper.
One of those book that you can’t wait to read, but don’t know if you want to because then it will be done, but I couldn’t resist. Yes, this is the second book in this series and it can be read alone, enough information is provided, but you will miss out on a previously delightful book. There is a sad part of this book, but most of it is full of chuckles, and becomes a quick page turner. We have two individual, one Amish, but considered a bit odd by the community, and the other an eclectic fence jumper, that came back to take care of her handicapped brother. We get to watch, read, these two as they go about with their detective work of trying to solve a murder. Surprises and chuckles abound here, and I want more, and yes, I have to wait until December, but there is another coming!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.
This is the second Kappy (Katherine)King mystery book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. While it is a mystery, the antics of Kappy and her best friend Edie will have you literally laughing out loud!
Young Sally June Esh was killed when someone hit her buggy with their car and drove away. Ex-Amish Edie and Kappy, of course, just have to solve this murder. Was it murder? Was it just a horrible accident? The Esh family was known for their “church pickles”. Surely someone didn’t get killed over pickles?!
Thank you, Amy Lillard, for this delightful read! I highly recommend it!
As a fan of Amy Lillard's Amish fiction and contemporary fiction books, I was a bit skeptical when I saw she was writing a cozy mystery. I didn't know if she could pull it off so to speak. However, I kept an open mind and began reading and was I ever wowed! Amy can not only write great Amish fiction and romance but she can write a darn good cozy mystery!
This story has fun characters who balance each other well. Kappy (short for Katherine) is not your typical Amish woman. While being Amish she describes herself as living on the fringe of the community. Not really belonging but also not not belonging. Ex-Amish Edie is a bit eccentric in her choice of clothes but she is a ton of fun and is the perfect partner for Kappy in their mystery-solving. And then there's Jimmy, Edie's special needs brother, who has an innocence about him and added some lighthearted moments in the book. These three are just the perfect combination of characters and worked well off each other. I can't say as I have a favorite because I enjoyed them all separately and together.
The plot of this story is good and moves along at a good pace. There's never a dull moment with Kappy and Edie (unofficially) on the case. There is the typical cast of characters who are suspects but I didn't figure out who the guilty person was until the very end. I kept changing my mind between who and why. This story was easy to get into and it kept my interest until the end.
With a perfect mix of comedy and mystery, this book was a quick read. It would be a perfect weekend book. This is the second book in the series but can be read as a standalone. I, myself, haven't read the first book yet but will soon be correcting that. I can't wait for the next book in the series to see what Kappy and Edie get into next!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author but was not required to write a review. All opinions are mine.
Kathryn "Kappy" King is a happy unmarried woman who runs a kapps making business in her Pennsylvania Amish hometown. When young Sally June Esh (whose family runs a pickles producing business) was killed in a buggy accident, she suspects foul play after her ex-Amish friend, Edie, received an anonymous text: "Some accidents aren't accidents." So, both Kappy and Edie start asking questions in the community and the more information they gather, the more they are convinced that Sally's death is not an accident.
A light hearted cozy murder mystery which unfortunately I did not quite enjoy. Not only the plot is average, the focus shifted from mystery solving to romance, obscuring the main plot. The writing is simple although it has a somewhat good storytelling. A character driven story where characters are delineated indirectly. Truth be told, I find both Kappy and Edie are a little overwhelming and frustrating.
You'd need to read the first book in this series in order to fully understand and enjoy this second book. Too many references made to the first book without giving any brief backstories and I felt that I missed out quite a bit.
This book is not for me. But if you are looking for a fun quick read with a little mystery thrown in, you may enjoy this book and even the whole series.
***I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from Kensington Books through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All views expressed in this review are my own and was not influenced by the author, publisher or any third party.***
The Amish community of Blue Sky, PA is grieving once again with the loss of young Sally June Esh from a buggy accident. Jimmy and Edie Beachy were still recovering from the untimely death of their mother, the mystery of Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper, book one in Amy Lillard’s Amish Mystery series. Kappy King noticed something in a newspaper picture and determined it was not just an accident with an Englisher’s car but murder as there were no skid marks and with blue paint on the buggy. The antics of Kappy and her shunned neighbor, Edie Beachy, had me in stitches of laughter reading this humorous mystery as they went around in Edie’s car and then Kappy’s buggy trying to solve the mystery. Lovable Jimmy Beachy and his animals added to the story with Kappy advising Edie not to be overprotective of Jimmy or take him into her English world.
A new resident wanting her green pickles to be eaten instead of the usual white church pickles, the blue paint in the picture from the vehicle, text messages from an anonymous individual to Edie, overheard talk of Jonah Esh dating an Englisher girl and another young Amish man leaving the area gave them a list of suspects. Lillard creative adventures, dialogue and picturesque scenes that placed me right in the midst of Kappy and Edie’s detective work despite warnings from the local Detective Jack Jones—who Edie just may be flirting with. This cozy mystery was an amusing story that was a pure joy to read in trying to figure out the guilty suspect and the underlying romance of various characters. I look forward to another great mystery by Amy Lillard with her charming characters that brought moments of side-splitting laughter and tears at times.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review but have expressed my sincere thoughts.
Kappy King had been living a quiet life on the edges of her Amish faith until Edie returned home to care for her special needs brother. Since then Kappy and Edie have been in the midst of murder investigations. This time it involves a young Amish girl who was killed in an auto accident delivering pickles to the store. Can Kappy and Edie find the killer before angering everyone in the town?
This is the second book in The Amish Mystery series from Amy Lillard and it is a treat to read. Each book reads as a stand alone but you get a lot of the back story in the first book, Kappy King and the Puppy Caper. Each book is a clean read with a light romance in the background. I would have no problems letting a teenager into mysteries read these books.
Edie is ex-Amish and is hilarious in her outfits. She is a great friend for Kappy in that she makes Kappy come out of her shell and be apart of the community. Kappy is a great friend for Edie in that she makes Edie think about her life decisions. You could not have two better friends for each other.
Grab yourself some pickles (white church pickles or green) and go to town reading about the latest adventures for Kappy King.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kensington Books through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper ( An Amish Mystery #2 ) By: Amy Lillard Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper is book two in An Amish Mystery series by Amy Lillard. Wow, Pickles , are they a part of this mystery story? This is a story when I got started I did not want to put it down. I caught myself laughing several times throughout the story. I was not disappointed. You take an Amish lady and an English lady putting their sleuthing skills together to uncover a mystery in their town. Can they do it? There are buggy, pickles, English cars, and a mystery to be solved. The author keeps you guessing till the last few pages. I loved the story and the characters, both were well written and well developed. I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but was not told that I had to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper another great Amish Mystery. This will keep ya guessing to who killed Sally June and why. Kappy is about to take on another case to find out who killed Sally June and left the scene? Why would someone want to kill her? Normally her brother drives the pickles to town. There seems to be some gossip going around town about him and a Englisher. Well written story love the characters. You are going to want to find out who done it and what is with all these pickles?
Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper is book two in an Amish Mystery series by Amy Lillard. I got a kick out of reading this book. You gotta love Kappy, Edie and Jimmy. What a great combination of characters. Every time you turned around something else was happening. Loved this story. Looking forward to the next story in this series.
An exciting story filled with action, mystery and a "who done it?" I couldn't stop reading as I wanted to know what would happen next. How could pickles play a part in the mystery? Pickles, puppies, buggies and more... I enjoyed this one. I received a copy and this is my personal honest opinion. No review was required.
Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper is book two in An Amish Mystery series by Amy Lillard. Kappy We return to Blue Sky, Pennsylvania where Kathryn “Kappy” King and Edie Peachy are just getting life back to a somewhat normal routine for their selves and Edie’s brother Jimmy after solving the mystery of Edie and Jimmy’s mother’s death. Edie has insisted on Jimmy getting and part time job. On their way to pick up Jimmy, the girls come across a buggy/vehicle accident. They quickly realize the driver of the buggy has been killed. Sally June Esh has been killed on her way to deliver the Esh’s pickle delivery. Her brother Jonah usually makes the deliveries, but on this odd day, Sally June has been at the reigns. Kappy and Edie soon decide that they are going to solve the mystery of who ran Sally June’s buggy off the road and why the individual did not stop. Amy did another wonderful job mixing mystery and humor in this book. The characters are well-developed and likeable. I received an advance reader copy of this book from netgalley and Kensington Books in return for my honest opinion of the book. All opinions and statements expressed are strictly my own.
I am so excited to read the next book in this series. Kappy is a hoot and I love her devotion to making kapps for the women in the community. I never really thought much about where the kapps came from. Kappy has a special gift for making them and is kept very busy with orders.
Kappy's neighbor Edie is back as well and still just as spunky and curious as ever. When they happen upon an accident , they are saddened to see that a buggy is involved. The smell of vinegar is everywhere and pickles are spread all over the street. It is a real tragedy when it is discovered that Sally June Esh has passed away from the accident. She was young at only nineteen years old and the community is saddened by the loss.
Kappy and Edie crash the funeral looking to find any information about the accident. I had to laugh at these two sneaking around like two detectives looking for clues. They are too funny at times and it makes the story so enjoyable to read. I wonder if the author had two people she knew in mind when she wrote these two characters? When Edie starts getting strange texts on her phone about the buggy accident, questions start popping in Kappy and Edie's head? Was it an accident or did someone deliberately cause the accident ? I love how the two women work together and are not afraid to investigate on their own. The banter between Kappy and Edie is hilarious. It is a miracle they agree on anything. One thing is for sure though, Sally June was murdered and they are convinced they will find out who did it.
As I continued to read the story I couldn't wait to see what shenanigans our two female "detectives" would get into next. They aren't real detectives, but they sure are better about finding clues than the police are. They know just the right questions to ask and have a knack for getting people's trust. I loved how the women didn't stop snooping and sure found themselves in trouble at times. It is a great story with an ending that I really enjoyed. I can't wait for the next book in the series to find out what kind of trouble Kappy and Edie get into next. Just a thought; this series would make a great TV show. I wonder who would play the lead female characters?
I received a copy of this book from the author. The review is my own opinion.
I loved the first book in this series, Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper and I couldn't wait to read the second. I wasn't disappointed. Full of humor, relationships, mystery and a well drawn community, I enjoy this series very much. Kappy and her new BFF, Edie are an interesting pair. Kappy is a young single Amish woman who was raised by her slightly excentric maiden aunt when her family was killed. Edie is former Amish who was shunned by the community but has returned to her family home to care for her special needs brother after their mother was murdered in the first book of the series. What an interesting and delightful pair they make. When a buggy collides with a car in a hit and run, leaving the buggy driver dead the assumption is that it was a tragic accident. But was it really? Who would want to kill over local pickles? Somebody would, it seems and Kappy and Edie are hot on the trail of a murderer - again. While I love the pairing of Kappy and Edie, the setting, the mystery, I have to say that as I was waiting for this book to get into my hands, I was really looking forward to getting to know Edie's brother better, how he was adapting to the loss of his mother and finding his place in his new situation. And, yes, the Beagle from the pervious book, the Puppy Kaper. This entry can be read as a stand alone but I would say read Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper first so you can get the most out of the second. It will still be a great read if you haven't read the first but so much better if you have. The mystery is solid and well written and the characters are people I would like to know. Now I have to be patient and wait for the third in the series. I'll be counting down the days until it comes out in December - Kappy King and the Pie Kaper. My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper is the second book in the Amish Mystery series and I look forward to reading more.
I enjoyed this book more than the first one, Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper. It had a nice flow to it and although there were a few different story lines they tied together nicely. Kappy and Jimmy are Amish and friends. His sister, Edie, left the church and is under the Bann, but that doesn't stop her from living with Jimmy so he can stay in the Amish community after the death of their mother. She brings her Englisch ways with her though - she drives a car and uses a cell phone. Kappy and Edie are friends and work together to solve mysteries. Their methods may be unorthodox but they do solve the crimes in the end.
There are family and friends, buggies, animals, food, pickles, visits and Kappy's business of making and selling prayer kapps. There are a few twists and turns to the story as well as a crime getting solved. There are clues and dead ends and an attraction between Jack, a detective, and Edie. Kappy has her admirers too and all are not wanted. There is nice closure but will there ever be a happily ever after or two?
Lillard is one of my favorite authors of Amish stories. I look forward to reading the next book in the series involving pies in Kappy King and the Pie Kaper due out later this year. I also can't wait to read more in her other series.
You need to read book one, Kappy King and the Puppy Caper before you read this one. You will miss a lot of references back to the first story. It's also a really fun read and a great start to the series.
Kappy and Edie are just plain fun! No pun intended. Kappy marches to the beat of her own drum and together they are magic. This book is a really fun light read and Amy Lillard shows her versatility in being able to write a cozy mysteries as well as great fiction.
With humor, twists and turns, and guessing who done it until the end (I guessed totally wrong), this is one mystery that won't end up in my drawer or yours. So pick up your copy and enjoy a dill-lightful story. Happy Reading!

Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper is the second book written by Amy Lillard in her An Amish Mystery series. The storyline is amazing and well thought out. This is a fast moving story and keepers the reader turning pages to try to sole the mystery.
The characters are amazing and I enjoyed Kappy King and Edie. This is an ubusual friendship between the two but it works for them. Together they run around town trying to gather clues to solve this murder. They are funny, crazy, and very serious at times. They take the readers on a fantastic journey as well. The author has done a great job developing her characters.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached by anyone to post a favorable review. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a great mystery that I can highly recommend to others.
Congratulations to Amy Lillard for writing another fantastic story for her readers to enjoy.
I'm a fan of this series less because of the mysteries (there's more going on out in Amish country than the casual observer might think!) but because of the interplay between the characters. Kappy, so nicknamed from Kathryn AND because she makes prayer kapps, is observant. Her friend Edie not only is not, she's been banned because she joined the church and then left it. She's back in town to care for her younger brother Jimmy, who is intellectually different. After Kappy and Edie solved the murder of Edie's mom, they thought things would be quiet. Not! Young Elmer the puppy is running around, a young woman is run down in her buggy, there's two potential love interests in Hiram and Silas (and Jack too, really). There was a little less of Amish culture in this installment but it's a great read with engaging characters and good humor. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
This novel is a witty addition to the Amish Mystery series. I think it would be best enjoyed after reading book one, Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper. This way, the reader will feel a connection with Edie, Kappy, and Jimmy from that story, and will understand what happened in their lives a few months before this book takes place.
I had a lot of fun reading Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper. There are some laugh out loud moments, but plenty of serious investigation, too. The author did a great job of keeping me guessing regarding the identity of the guilty party.
I enjoyed the hint of potential romance in the story. It was truly just a hint and definitely left me looking forward to seeing where Kappy’s love life may be headed in the future.
Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper would be a good choice for those who enjoy cozy mysteries and also for Amish fiction fans, as well.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Kappy King And The Pickle Kaper is a mystery. The turns have twists and the twists have fantastical turns. The book have the characters very grounded in their Faith - they need it. The answer to the mystery is hard to find. The characters are authentic and all around fun. The main characters are kind hearted and they are full of Faith. That is the way it should be. Will they figure who it is? It is a great big surprise - believe you me. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.
if you would like to read more of my Christian book reviews go to christianlybookreviewers.blogspot.com - I look forward to seeing you there.
This was a murder mystery that absolutely kept me guessing until the last few pages. I like that, and I didn't even have a correct guess. Kappy and her friend Edie had solved the earlier murder of Edie's mother, so when a young Amish girl was mowed over in her buggy by a hit and run automobile and killed they naturally got curious. Even more so when Edie started getting suspicious texts on her phone hinting that it wasn't an accident. I loved the way they went about their regular lives and picked up clues and suspicions along the way. Their minds kept changing and they ran through clues they had collected and kept on digging and guessing. That kept me wondering too! These characters were so fun and so refreshing. Kappy made the prayer kapps the Amish and Mennonite women wore in their community but I wondered where Edie got the money that kept her and her brother Jimmy going. He was a lovable addition to the girl's shenanigans and was a big animal lover. As I was reading I kept getting these crazy cravings for pickles, so went out and bought me a huge jar to nibble on! I wonder why..... I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author/publisher but was not required to write a review.
I enjoyed another who did it with Kappy. I think she's my favorite character. I also like Edie. Those two remind me of Sherlock Homes and his sidekick Winston. I can relate to these two a lot. It seems that wherever they go trouble seems to follow them. I cracked up with Edie. For someone who's been shunned by the community she's done her fair share of stunts and that's is what is so funny. Kappy is cool. She doesn't really like trouble. And I think it's sweet that she worries about Jimmy Edie's brother. Jimmy is a go getter. I love his style. It's wonderful how the author can show us that even people with disablilties are and able to take care of themselves. I also like that the book cover is yellow since that is my favorite color. That I definitely love!! But anyway, I gave this book a five star rating since I really love the author and I love her writing style. She knows how to add humor into the mystery. I mean, after all, the characters have to have some fun in life too!! I can understand Edie's reluctance. There are some things in life that I don't really like either. Like changes even if those are for the good. I'm getting ready to make a life changing deal in my life and I sure hope it's for the good. I am not saying anything else about this because ya'll just have to read this cool story yourselves. I know ya'll will love it just as much as I did!! I received this book for free and all opinions are my own!!
Well it was okay. Jimmy was the best of the writing l found. But the mystery seemed sort of lost in the book. Seemed the main characters were more interested in their romantic lives and going over the same clues over and over.
Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper is an Amish mystery and the second book in Amy Lillard's Kappy King series. If you haven't read the first book yet, no worries, you can read this one and not be lost. If you've never read one of Amy Lillard's books then you're in for a treat!
Kappy King has always felt like she's on the outside fringe of her Amish community. She's not banned or shunned, she just feels...different. Maybe it comes from losing her parents and siblings at a young age and being raised by her aunt, who knows? But Kappy loves her community and does her best to fit in. Maybe she would feel more settled if she were married, but she doesn't have time for that! She's busy trying to get her friend, Edith Peachy, to commit to staying in the community.
Edith Peachy jumped the fence as they say, many years ago. She loved the English world and the conveniences that come with it. After her mother died there was no one left to care for her brother, Jimmy, but her, so Edith returns to Blue Sky...although a bit reluctantly. She's under the bann and nobody will acknowledge her presence or talk to her until she repents, no one but Kappy. The two become the best of friends even though they have their differences.
When a local teen is killed in a buggy accident the local community is in mourning. But what if it wasn't really an accident at all? Edith gets a text suggesting just that and she and Kappy set off on an adventure to prove one way or the other. Each text reveals a little more about the "accident" and the ladies are determined to crack the case. The story is full of twists and turns and a lot of pickles along the way!
I really enjoyed the story more than I thought I would. It was a fun and light-hearted read. Edith and Kappy's friendship reminded me a lot of me and my best friend. We are so different in many ways but I know if I need her for anything all I have to do is call. She has my back through thick and thin and most of the time goes along with my hair brianed ideas, just like Kappy and Edith. They aren't too different that you wouldn't buy them being friends, but they are close enough to embrace each other flaws and all.
The mystery part of the story was really good too! There is a long list of who dunnits and you will keep guessing until the very end. I had my suspicions but until the truth was revealed I had as many guesses as the community has pickles! Oh and the pickles, I guess you're wondering about that, well I don't want to spoil anything for you but let's just say, people like things a certain way and don't take kindly to people trying to change things.
Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper is a great summer read (or anytime!). I think you will love it if you give it the chance, I know I did! So what are you waiting for? Grab you a copy and get ready to go on and adventure!
