Ronny Bronston, chief operative in the secretive IABA, has arrived on the planet Amazonia, disguised as metals broker Guy Thomas, but in reality he is investigating reports from a male smuggled from the matriarchy about mistreatment and even slavery of men. At first the stories seem validated but when Bronston reveals his true mission under drugs, the Amazonians seemed shocked and unaware of any such sex-based partiality. After some puzzling attempts on his life, Bronston starts to question the validity of the so-called Sons Of Liberty movement. Mack Reynolds has cleverly disguised what at first appears to be pastiche around role reversals, but winds up being a thought-provoking look at viable alternative governments and economics. A pleasant and undemanding read which could easily have slipped into a paternalistic diatribe on why the Amazonian society wouldn’t work, but instead gives one pause.
