The topic of adoption is near and dear to my heart. So, when I was recently given a copy of. “Thinking About Adoption: A Practical and Theological Handbook for Christians Discerning the Call to Parent by Adoption “ by Karleynne Gerber Ayayo and Michael Ayayo, I was excited to read this book. Adoption can be a confusing and daunting process. There are so many ways to adopt, and even beginning to consider the process of adoption can be intimidating. This book goes a long way to stripping away that intimidation factor.
In a very systematic, easy-to-read manner, the authors walk the reader through what adoption is, the history of adoption, a Christian perspective on adoption, and the various pathways to adoption. This book discusses, private domestic adoption, domestic adoption through the State, international adoption, special needs adoption, and transracial adoption . After reading this book, the reader should be able to discern which adoption route may be most appropriate for them. It would take untold hours for an individual to self-discover everything that is covered within the eight chapters of this book. So the authors have done potential adoptive families, a great service in placing all of this information in one location.
This book is also valuable because it contains 10 appendices, which excerpt interviews of adoptive families who have pursued the various routes toward adoption. This is not only a resource for someone considering adoption, but also for pastors and Christian leaders to have on hand if anyone in their congregation is thinking about adopting. This is truly a valuable resource for the Christian community, and I highly commend it to the reader. Happy reading!
