This box set collects together the first three books in the Aspects YA sci-fi series.
LOVE/HATE
The last thing Claire expected was to be chosen as the next in a long line of alien-blooded warriors chosen to protect Earth from monsters. Especially not when she's been chosen as the Aspect of Love, and she's already dating the Aspect of Hate. Can their relationship survive Claire's new calling?
JUSTICE/LONELINESS
Claire was finally getting used to the dangers of the new job, but when unexpected news comes to the Aspect of Loneliness, she's reminded of just how little freedom her new life affords her. So, she strikes a deal with the Aspect Program: If she can reclaim an entire city from the Wastes, the Aspects will be given their freedom. The only problem? Claire's powers don't seem to want to work anymore.
EMPATHY/PAIN With the reclaiming of lands from the Wastes now possible, Claire was sure that she was finally going to get the settled life she wanted. But with the aliens that once came to help them fight the monsters finally returning, and a mysterious blue light that strips the Aspects of their powers appearing, Claire's about to realise that that life might be even further than she thinks.
Some say she's an ancient creature of nightmare that was unleashed from beneath the ocean, come to devour the souls of men. Others say that she's a cosmic being from the beyond the stars that has taken corporeal form to learn our ways for some unknown end...
In truth, L.C. Mawson lives in a tower in the middle of a haunted forest, far from civilisation and is definitely not a witch who curses those who trespass upon her land. And she definitely cannot turn into a dragon that flies over cities in the dead of night and whose cries are often mistaken for an approaching storm. Where did you hear that? That's absurd...
The only contact she has with humanity is publishing books every so often, which is definitely just for fun and not part of an ancient contract with a trickster god.
This is an extremely creative and well written series, the kind that makes the reader hate having to wait for each next book to be published. Luckily that’s not a concern with it in a boxset form. It’s a great way to get the series and highly recommended.
Since I read each book separately, here are my book-by-book reviews.
Love/Hate (Aspects Book 1)
Love/Hate is a really neat book with a wonderful leading character in Claire, and a great story concept in the half-blood Aspects who protect against the monsters in the wastes. LC Mawson is a really great author. I've long been a fan of her wonderful "Snowverse" novels, so I was very excited to see a new series from her. Based on this volume 1, with its wonderful characters, plot and world-building, I'm comfortable that she's done it again. Highly recommended.
Justice/Loneliness (Aspects Book 2)
This is another fun book with a very innovative concept and works building. It’s a great continuation of the story of the Aspect of Love from book 1 (despite the book name, the Aspect of Loneliness isn’t the main focus), and therefore I’d really read that nook first. Don’t worry though, it’s excellent. Adventure, thrills, twists and turns ensue in this well done tale. Good reading and lots of fun, so I highly recommend it.
Empathy/Pain (Aspects Book 3)
Another great book for the series. This time, in addition to the focus on the Aspect of Love, it’s dealing with her biological sister, the Aspect of Empathy. This Aspect is actually pretty amazing in that her empathy powers lead her to virtually become whoever she’s nearest - which makes a romance of the Aspect of Pain interesting. Once more we have a wonderful plot with lots at well done drama and neat concepts and characters all pulled together by very talented writing. Well worth reading, though it’s best to start with book 1. As for this book, it’s highly recommended.
“Atypical” becomes typical in this world! In this YA series we are introduced to a Powerful being in Claire, who is an unexpected Aspect and is destined to transform into a warrior and protector. The worldbuilding is intense, there is a bit of romance, inclusivity, deceptive politics, and danger that will keep you guessing. Be prepared to immerse yourself!
