About the author

Mu. Varadarasan (மு. வரதராசன்), also known as Mu. Va. and Varatharasanar, was a Tamil scholar, author and academic from Tamil Nadu, India. He was a prolific writer whose published works include 13 novels, 6 plays, 2 short story collections, 11 essay anthologies, a book on the history of Tamil literature, books on Tamil linguistics and children's books. During 1961–71, he was the head of the Tamil department at the University of Madras. In 1961, he was awarded the Sahitya Academy Award for Tamil for his novel Agalvilaku. During 1971–74, he was the vice-chancellor of the University of Madurai.

மு.வ எனச் சுருக்கமாக அழைக்கப்பட்ட மு. வரதராசன் 20ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் புகழ் பெற்ற தமிழ் அறிஞர்களுள் ஒருவர். இலக்கியக் கட்டுரைகள், ஆராய்ச்சி நூல்கள் போன்றவை மட்டுமன்றிப் பல சிறுகதைகள், புதினங்கள் போன்றவற்றையும் எழுதியுள்ளார். இவர் சென்னை பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரி, சென்னை பல்கலைக் கழகம் ஆகியவற்றில் தமிழ்த்துறைத் தலைமைப் பொறுப்பில் இருந்ததுடன், மதுரை காமராசர் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் துணைவேந்தராகவும் பணியாற்றினார். பன்முக ஆற்றல்கள் கொண்ட இவர் நல்லாசிரியராகவும், பண்பாளராகவும் விளங்கினார்

மு.வரதராசனார், தமிழ்நாடு, வட ஆற்காடு மாவட்டம், திருப்பத்தூரில் முனுசாமி முதலியார் - அம்மாக்கண்ணு தம்பதிக்கு பிறந்தார். திருவேங்கடம் என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டு அழைக்கப்பட்டாலும் தாத்தாவின் பெயரான வரதராசன் என்ற பெயரே அவருக்கு நிலைத்துவிட்டது. மு.வ. வின் கல்வி, வேலூர் மாவட்டம், வாலாஜாப்பேட்டை அருகிலுள்ள வேலம் என்னும் சிறிய கிராமத்துடன் இயைந்து வளர்ந்தது. உயர்நிலைக் கல்வியைத் திருப்பத்தூரில் கற்றுத் தேர்ந்தார். பதினாறு வயதில் பள்ளி இறுதித் தேர்வில் வெற்றி பெற்றார். 1928ம் ஆண்டில் திருப்பத்தூர் வட்டாட்சியர் அலுவலகத்தில் சில காலம் எழுத்தராகப் பணியாற்றினார்.

எழுத்தராகப் பணியாற்றிய போது உடல் நலம் குன்றியதால் அந்தப் பணியிலிருந்து விடுபட்டு ஓய்வுக்காக கிராமத்துக்குச் சென்று, அங்கு திருப்பத்தூர் முருகைய முதலியார் என்பவரிடம் தமிழ் கற்கத் தொடங்கினார். 1931 இல் வித்வான் முதல் நிலைத் தேர்வில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார். பின்னர் தாமே பயின்று 1935 இல் வித்வான் தேர்வு எழுதி, அதில் மாநிலத்திலேயே முதல் மாணாக்கராகத் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார். 1935 ஆம் ஆண்டு தம் மாமன் மகளான ராதா அம்மையாரை மணந்தார். இவர்களுக்கு திருநாவுக்கரசு, நம்பி, பாரி ஆகிய ஆண் மக்கள் பிறந்தனர். 1935 முதல் 1938 வரை திருப்பத்தூர் பள்ளியில் தமிழ் ஆசிரியராகப் பணியாற்றினார். 1939ல் பி.ஓ.எல். தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார்.

Tamil Language has a very long history and it's literature equally long that spans thousands of years. It has been able to hold the continuity for generations and thousands of years. Writing about the history of the language is such an amazing feat that one will have to have read the lengths and breadths of the works written during all those years - right from the Sangam Literature to the modern day works. It takes a lot of learning and knowledge to gather all the information and write a compendium of all such great works without the affinity to a particular form of literature alone. The author Mu. Varadharajan is such a learned person. He has held very high positions in the academic institutions and is considered very highly in the literary community.

It is very amazing to know that the Tamil literature is rich with so many works at its repository and repertoire. I came to know a lot of interesting information throughout the book. Also it portrays the amount of work that the author has put to collect all the information about the history of Tamil Literature in a sequence from the old ages to the recent works. An excellent read for all those who would like to know what all treasures the Tamil Language has to offer.
