Gentlemen of Temptation #1

Falling from His Grace

Rate this book
Welcome to a London Gaming Hell like no other. A place where anonymity is your security—no names, no faces, no strings. But that doesn't mean no surprises...

Lucas Mayfield, the Eighth Earl of Heightford, couldn't be more pleased with the private club that is his brainchild. But when a young courtesan at the club's masquerade appears far too innocent, his suspicions are raised—along with his interest... Until her gleaming hair tumbles down, and he recognizes her as the Duke of Langston's beautiful daughter. How did the minx even know the place existed? And how has he allowed himself to give in to temptation and kiss her? More perplexing: she has vowed the kiss won't be the last.

Liliah Durary's father has cruelly demanded she marry her best friend, Meyer, though no romantic feeling exists between them. In fact, Meyer and Liliah's other best friend, Rebecca, are truly in love. Liliah sees only one option: She and Meyer will maintain a platonic marriage until some other arrangement can be made. Still, she intends to experience pleasure before she is wed. An intriguing new club seems the perfect place—and when Lucas Mayfield kisses her, he seems the perfect other arrangement she seeks. All Liliah has to do is convince him.

Kristin's inspiration for the romance she writes comes from her tall, dark and handsome husband with killer blue eyes. 5% into this book and I can’t keep going. The heroine is being forced into marriage with her best friend (who is in love with someone else). And if either of them refuses, then his parents will disinherit him and take his title away. I’m sorry, but that’s not how it works. They can’t just take the title and give it to a random cousin, as this book suggests. What’s even the point of writing a historical romance if the basic details of the time aren’t even considered? Yikes.

I wouldn’t normally leave a star rating if I only read so little of the story, but this is just too blatantly lazy and wrong.

Falling from His Grace by Kristin Vayden is book One in the Gentlemen of Temptation Series. This is the story of Lucas Mayfield, the Eighth Earl of Heightford and Liliah Durary.
Lucas and his friends have set up and started running the Gentleman's club called Temptation. There he happens to see a young lady who doesn't look to be a true courtesan but does happen to capture his desire. Liliah father has set forth in motion a marriage to her good friend Meyer for her. Which might not be so bad even though they have no romantic feeling for each other but Meyer is truly in love with their other friend Rebecca. With her plan to just be a platonic marriage since neither can get out of it, Liliah goes forward to taste what excitement she will be missing. This leads her to the Temptation and meeting Lucas. Lucas is someone she finds very attractive along with her growing feelings for him but there can't be anything to them since she is promised to another....right?
Enjoyed this book so much and can't wait for the other stories to come.

Liliah Durary is the beautiful, wealthy daughter of a duke. She could marry anyone she wanted - except her father has autocratically decreed she marry her best friend, Meyer. Which might not be so bad, except that Meyer is in love with her other best friend, Rebecca. Meyer’s father has cut some sort of secret deal with the duke, and all three friends are set to have their lives ruined as a result.

Before Liliah marries, though, she wants some adventure. Sneaking into an exclusive club - so exclusive, few even know it exists - and masquerading as a courtesan for one night fits the bill. Until she is caught, by the club’s owner, Lucas Mayfield, the Earl of Heightford. Lucas lives in the shadows by choice, but intrigued by Liliah and her quiet desperation, he reinserts himself into London society in order to find out more about her.

This is the first in a new series, with the second to feature Liliah’s sister Samantha. We didn’t get to know Samantha particularly well here, and she didn’t get a face to face with the character I suspect will be her love interest, but there was enough there to have me intrigued, particularly considering how much I enjoyed this.

A lot of historical romances focus on the lack of choices and opportunities for women from the lower classes, but in some ways those from the upper echelons were even more constrained. A duke had such power and influence that Liliah had literally no ability to defy him. Even with Lucas’ help, she was only able to do so because Lucas had a bargaining chip he could hold over her father… and no reputation left to ruin.

I really enjoyed the friendship between Liliah, Rebecca and Meyer. No matter what happened, they were determined to stick together and keep fighting, and Liliah’s unwavering loyalty to her friends and dedication to their happiness, no matter the personal cost to her, was inspiring. It was no wonder she fascinated Lucas, who had undoubtedly never met a woman of such character and strength of will.

Five stars for an excellent first installment in a series!

What a nice surprise.

New authors.....well you never know, but I’ll definately be reading more historical from this author.

I loved the dialogue, setting, time period and sweet snark. It was pretty funny in some places and both leads were incredibly likable.

We meet Lilliah, she’s the daughter of a Duke being bartered off in marriage to a good male friend of hers, who unfortunately is in love w/ their best friend.

There’s absolutely nothing they can do to stop it.

Or so it seems.....

Enter a gaming hall, run by 3 titled men of wealth and our Hero Earl, Lucas.

We’ve got quite a Lady determined to meet passion in the bowels of hell and the man she entrances in none other than Lucas. He wants nothing to do w/ the Ton, But when she slips out of his reach, he pursues her. Publicly. I was fanning myself during some of these waltzes. :)

He knows she’s about to be betrothed to someone who wants another and after much consideration, decides to rid her of her pesky problem and make a woman of her.

He thinks he will walk away, unscathed.

He doesn’t. He falls. She falls. Everything’s falling apart, lol.

I don’t want to give the whole book away, but there’s eventually a plan Lucas puts in place so everyone gets what they want.

Lucas needling and bothering the Duke btw was LOL hilarious! The supporting characters were interesting. Lucas and his friends, a Marquess math head and a hot headed Scot Viscount, were absolute jewels.

For a first read, I really enjoyed this sweet and sexy, cat and mouse tale. Recommend.

Oh I loved this story! My first book by this author and I was so impressed with many things. She writes so descriptively. Seriously, she covers all 5 senses when describing the scenery, how something sounded, smelled, looked... you name it. I love when authors can get me to actually feel like I am right there live in the scene watching it all happen as a bystander, instead of just reading it off of a page. All of the characters were so well written too. Of the three guys (hero, plus two future heroes) I loved their camaraderie and teasing and banter. I could actually imagine guy friends badgering each other as they did. I loved the heroine in how spunky she was, went after what she wanted, knew when to be quiet in front of her nasty father, was perfect at flirting and being sassy in an adorable way with the hero.... There were tons of sexual chemistry, you could feel the desperation of the H/h wanting to be together again (not insta-lust or love by any means though), plenty of sexual jokes or innuendos... but as for the sex itself, I felt we only got a few quickies and that was it. So there was definitely more focus on the falling in love here. If I could have changed anything about the story, I think the author could have taken advantage of the Temptations club scene a little bit more and had some hot rendevouz scenes for our H/h there. :)

Walk on the wild side!

What do you do when your father autocratically demands that you marry your best friend. Despite the fact that he is desperately in love with your friend.
Liliah Durary, daughter the Duke of Chatterwood, is determined not to go quietly into the night.
She makes the decision to kick up her heels, to maybe live life somewhat before being forced into a platonic marriage. Liliah, Meyer and Rebecca have determined that if all else fails, the marriage will be just that.
The news of a secret club, where all wear a masquerade mask, identities hidden, appeals. Lilia worries at her male acquaintances until they let slip the club's location.
And this is the part that I find hard to imagine, a fairly well sheltered maiden slipping off alone into the less salubrious parts of town in the dark of night to engage in what? All I can think is Danger, Danger, Danger! And in disguise, and alone, being the daughter of a Duke carries no weight.
Lucas Mayfield, the Eighth Earl of Heightfort, and part owner of the exclusive club is flummoxed when he recognizes Liliah in his club. He needs to get to the bottom of it ... hell he needs to get her out of there! But kissing Liliah? That opens up a whole new avenue of problems.
So demanding parents, a daughter walking on the wild side, and a man unwillingly drawn towards the siren call of an innocent crossing the lines makes for an intriguing, if somewhat predictable read.

Falling from His Grace was a terrific book featuring a wonderful romance and a phenomenal group of characters.

Lucas Mayfield, the Eighth Earl of Heightford, is proud of the exclusive club he’s created with his two best friends, Temptation. During a masquerade at the club, Lucas’s suspicions are raised when one of the club’s courtesans appears too innocent. For Liliah Durary, sneaking into Lucas’s club was supposed to allow her a chance to experience the pleasures life has to offer before her father forces her to wed her best friend. When Lucas uncovers her scheme and kisses her in the way she’s longed for, she decides Lucas could be the solution to all of her problems.

Liliah is incredibly loyal to those she cares about and I loved the friendship between her, Meyer, and Rebecca. I admired how she never let her father break her and that she held onto who she was. Lucas craves control over his life which is one of the reasons he created the club as it allowed him that control. He’s a man who doesn’t have the best reputation but he doesn’t let that stop him from getting what he wants.

The relationship between Liliah and Lucas was one definitely based on their attraction to one another and Liliah’s desire to experience life before her marriage. I enjoyed the scenes where Liliah was trying to convince Lucas to participate in her scheme as there’s such fantastic, playful banter between them. The physical scenes between them are incredibly sexy and I loved the emphasis on consent the author included. I liked how the pair came to accept their feelings for one another and how they resolved the situation with Liliah and Meyer’s fathers.

The forced engagement between Liliah and her best friend Meyer did add an interesting element to the story. It was clear to anyone who met the pair that there were no romantic feelings between them and I found it terrible how their father’s were determined to force the union. I did like how that storyline was ultimately resolved and I enjoyed Liliah and Meyer’s various schemes to try and get out of it. My favorite of the side characters was without a doubt Heathcliff Marston, one of the co-owners of the club. I loved his playful nature and his friendship with Lucas. I’m happy to see he’s the focus of the next book in this series.

Overall I really enjoyed Falling from His Grace and I’m looking forward to reading the second book, Escaping His Grace, soon. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, fun read.

Lucas Mayfield, the Eighth Earl of Heightfield, couldn’t be more pleased with the private club Temptations, that is his brainchild. But when a young courtesan at the club’s masquerade appears far too innocent, his suspicions are raised along with his interest. Until her gleaming hair tumbles down and he recognizes her as a debutante, it's his friend & partner, Heathcliff who recognises her as the Duke of Chatterwood’s beautiful daughter, Liliah.

Liliah sees only one option: She and Meyer will maintain a platonic marriage until some other arrangement can be made. Liliah has a proposition for Lucas.
A well written well paced book, the characters were well portrayed. Three lords opening & running a club was a slightly different trope, I liked all three Lucas, Heathcliff & Ramsey although Ramsey was very much a secondary character, no doubt he’ll have his day! Liliah is headstrong & feisty which is surprising considering her father. There is instant attraction between Lucas & Liliah & their bargain certainly isn’t the unemotional tryst Lucas was expecting. One of the delights of the book was the verbal sparring between characters which at times had me laughing out loud, I look forward to Heathcliff & Ramsey’s stories.

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

While I enjoyed reading this, there were a couple of... continuity difficulties encountered. Near the beginning, where Lucas and Liliah are making love for the first time, it appeared there was no mention of Lucas removing his breeches. I'm a fast reader and I could have just missed it, so I went back and reread. After four rereads and finally getting out paper and pencil to make notes of which garments were removed and when, I did find where he'd removed his breeches. This was a major trip. Okay, I found it and moved on.

However, I ran into a larger continuity error, one which no amount of rereading and note taking was able to fix. Arriving at the Morrison's ball, there is the following (quoting) -

"...As she walked into the manor, she traveled down the hall and into the ballroom. A tingle skated up her spine and she turned to an Ace of Spades, the dowager widow Lady Markson, watching her closely...."

The very next paragraph says (quoting) -
"Liliah grasped the hand of the footman as she stepped out of the carriage and into the torchlight.... She nodded to those who welcomed her, and she round her way into the Morrisons' grand ballroom...."

Either she got out of the carriage and went into the ballroom only to turn around, leave the ballroom, enter the carriage and then repeat the process or we have a major continuity error. Since there's no mention of Liliah repeating the process, it must be the latter.

Other than those, there's a spot where Lucas/Luc is called Luke and another where Lucas calls Liliah's sister Savannah instead of Samantha. A proofreader, beta reader and/or editor should have caught all of these errors.

I am not sure if I read a Kristin Vayden novel before but I am sure this will not be my lat one. I absolutely enjoyed it.

This one is about a man, the second son of the late Earl of Heightford, also known as Lucas Mayfield, owns a club. It is a secret club, you only get in within a special invitation.
One day a new courtesan enters the club, wearing a mask like every other, but she is different. She spikes an interest in him.
Liliah Durary is this pseudo courtesan, who wants pleasure before marriage because her father wants her to marry her best male friend (Mayer) who actually is in love with her best female friend (Rebecca). A very complicated problem because her best female friend’s family recently lost a lot of money and her father is forcing the match to Meyer.
If she really must marry Meyer they’d never consummate the marriage, they would never have children, share a bed etc. But Liliah wants to know what passion is and that is the reason why she attends this first masquerade.
How was she able to come behind all his security? Who is this woman? What does she want in his club?
Simply: a historical romance MUST READ!

Rule number 1. Never force your daughter to marry her best male friend because it can lead to some interesting events for said daughter! Lilah as been ordered by her father to marry and the man is her best male friend. No romance involved. So she decides to step out and find some pleasure before she is in a platonic marriage. She goes to a private gaming club owned by none other than Lucas Mayfield, the Eighth Earl of Heightford and two of his friends. When Lucas sees her, he knows she is an innocent with no business being in his club. But when they meet, there is a strong attraction and Lilah makes him a proposition he least expected!
This is a fast paced entertaining read that will have you smiling and also holding your breath to see what happens! Kristin Vayden is a new author to me, but I intend to read more by her in the future! It will be interesting to see the next two in the series about the other club owners, Heathcliff and Ramsey!

I’ve been in the mood for a historical romance but this one unfortunately didn’t do it for. I liked the premise but at the same time it was unrealistic but yet predictable.
.
The heroine is being forced by her father to marry her best friend, who also happens to be in love with her other friend. Accepting that this will happen but she will never have a marriage other than in name only she sets out to find out about passion at an exclusive club where she meets the hero. Our hero is part owner of the club but never partakes in its “delights” but is tempted for the first time by the heroine.
.
To me it was written very unrealistically that all of a sudden the heroine who doesn’t even know what passion is suddenly wants it. I’ve read this kind of plot well done in other books but in this one it missed its mark. So what followed was a very uninteresting and predictable storyline. Is it too much to ask to be wowed?

Scandalously delicious
Lady Liliah’s father has set her up with an arranged marriage to her best friend Lord Meyer, who happens to be in love with their other best friend Lady Rebecca. Trying to find a way out of the marriage she has deemed it hopeless and that she would end up with a platonic marriage. When one of her adventures leads to her a different path something or someone that maybe able to help her. Lucas the Earl of Height?? Is known as a rogue someone who will never fall for another women again. However when he agrees to help lady Lilian that may have just been his downfall. I loved this book. I could not put it down. There was some scandalously intriguing behavior. I loved the characters involved, love the draw that Lilian seems to have over Lucas. This book had a few turns I did not see coming and completely grabbed my attention from the beginning.

Falling From His Grace was such an enjoyable read! I loved Liliah's spirit. She saw the predicament she was in and while she didn't see a way to change it, she still managed to grab life by the reins and live it for herself. The banter in this book was witty and so much fun. I can't wait to read more in this series.

MCs: Liliah & Lucas

Filing from His Grace already has a lot of GR reviews that tell what the story is about and how it progressed, so I won't go into that.

This Regency was a little over the top with some eye rolling moments, but it was entertaining. I guess I was just in the mood for it. So, I popped it up to 4 Stars.

I totally enjoyed this book. Witty, amusing, and romance with a twist. I must say I had no idea of what to expect with this book. In no way was I disappointed when reading it. I went four stars instead of five because it had a little problem. I will leave it up to you to see what that was as it could be just a personal opinion and thought regarding it. However, all in all a really good read that keeps your attention and makes you smile. The chemistry between the characters was great! I loved the twist in the story line and I must say all in all..... A book well worth buying and reading and rereading! I was given this arc via NetGalley. All opinions expressed here are my own! This novel was provided to me through Netgalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

This book and I started on the wrong foot : first, I didn’t really like the heroin’s name (Liliah). I even looked up on the net to see if it was a real name or just some fancy invention. My apologies to the author, it’s a real name. Second, I thought that she would want to visit a gaming hell to seek carnal pleasure didn’t fit well with the rest of her personality. But after all, why not ?

And then… the chemistry between Liliah and Lucas just jumped out the page - well, the Kindle, I loved the dialogues, the teasing, the secondary characters (except the father, of course). And I couldn't put that book down. Plus you have to give it to her, Liliah is a very good friend.

All in all, an excellent and entertaining read. I’d never heard about this author before, but now I intend to catch up with her and I’m particularly looking forward to the next book in the series.

I received this in a Goodreads Giveaway. I read a lot of of historical romance and looked forward to an author I had not read before. I did like the characters of Lilia and Lucas and they were sweet together. However, the actual plot was below par and without a solid back story, it was difficult to focus my interest.

I loved Lucas and Liliah's story!!

Liliah has been told by her father who she will marry. There is only one problem...her soon to be betrothed is her best friend and in he is in love with someone else! She decides that she needs to experience some passion before her platonic marriage and ends up at a private club where she meets Lucas.

Lucas is mesmerized by this innocent miss, which is very out of the norm for him. As he spends more time with Liliah, he finds himself falling for her. But she is all but betrothed, so what can they do?

I loved watching these two together. Their bantering had me laughing out loud. I'm so happy to have found this author and am excited to read Miranda and Heathcliff's story next!!

A new-to-me author who dishes up laughs, antics and a nice love story. There is no hidden meaning in this story, it is just fun. I loved the dialog between Lucas, Heathcliff and Ramsey and between Lucas and Liliah. It was a refreshing story that kept me interested until the end. The antics of how they were going to get around the machinations of their parents was fascinating. A very happy reader.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Falling from his Grace by Kristin Vayden
Gentlemen of Temptation #1

Highly realistic – probably not
Well written – yes
Likable characters – big smile on my face
Predictable ending – there is definitely a HEA for the couple
Did I enjoy the book – another big smile and a definite yes
Do I want to read more in the series – without a doubt!

Lady Liliah Durary is a bit of a handful and often seems to go against her father’s wishes sneaking out to ride her horse or do as she will and that is likely not something that took place in the early 1800’s. The fact that she is being forced into a marriage neither she nor the husband to be wants to be included in makes her decide to experience pleasure at least one before the nuptials…so…hearing of an exclusive rather risqué club she heads off in disguise to see what will happen…realistic? Probably not. Of course she runs into a gentleman that assumes one thing only to find out that she is not the courtesan that she appears to be. And, with a bit of the Cinderella idea in play she flees into the night.

Lucas and his two friends have established “Temptations” as a place of gambling and pleasure for men of means. He has a backstory that makes him leery of marriage and ties though Liliah begins to break down his walls a bit at a time. Finding out more about Liliah seems to be a must and keeping her silent about the club a necessity. And thus the story begins with an agreement that will change both of their lives in more ways than one.

With two father’s to thwart, a marriage to prevent, a sister to save and a romance or two in the making this is a fun story that feels of the era in the way it is written even if the likelihood of such a story happening in real life beggars belief…at least a bit…or more than a bit ;) But…fiction is written to help us escape, stimulate our minds and…entertain and this book did all of that and more. I do want to read more in this series and can’t wait to read what comes next.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books – Lyrical Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

*I received an advance copy from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review*

This book was a surprise all the way through. It's well paced and full of characters that are easy to love (and that you hope for future books about), as well as twists and turns that keep you up to read just one more chapter. Both Liliah and Lucas are dynamic individuals who are aware of their flaws but still willing to make the daring decisions necessary to taste a bit of happiness and pleasure despite the intrique surrounding them. I will definitely be putting any future books by Kristin Vayden on my must read list.

I received this novel from net galley and the publisher for an honest review. Thank you!
This novel was a very good read. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. Liliah Durary, the Duke of Langston's daughter wants to experience pleasure before she is married to her friend Meyer, who is in love with her friend Rebecca. She does not understand why her father is forcing the match. Liliah is angry with her father, but she is protective of her younger sister. Liliah sneaks into a private club and meets Lucas Mayfield, the Eighth Earl of Heightford. Lucas has his own dark past and his club promotes discretion. All that changes when Liliah sneaks in and he has a strong desire to know who this innocent, seductive woman is. Lucas has no plans of marriage and enjoys his life. However, to keep his club secrets, Lucas and Liliah strike a deal. What neither of them planned was the feelings they would invoke in each other and themselves. However, there are those that will make sure Liliah marries Meyer, no matter what it costs. Lucas only planned on giving Liliah pleasure, but does not realize until the stakes intensify that he wants her as his own. Lucas and his partners try to figure out why the duke is forcing this marriage before it is too late. Liliah thought she could have pleasure before resigning herself to a loveless marriage, but she wants more from Lucas and lets him go, but Lucas does not intend on giving her up. I look forward to the next novel in the series which involves two of the other characters that appeared in this novel and see where their story leads!

I found this book to be an easy, amusing read. I am looking forward to reading more from this series, the Gentlemen of Temptation.

Liliah is in a quandry. Her best friends Meyer and Rebecca love each other, a storybook ending, were they allowed to marry. Instead Meyer's father, the Earl of Greywick, has threatened to cut Meyer off should he marry Rebecca. Liliah's father, a duke, and the Earl of Greywick are insistent that Liliah and Meyer marry instead. Faced with the prospect of a friendly, but sexless marriage that will distance her from her best friends, Liliah sets out to do the only thing she can, experience passion before her impending nuptials. On her desperate adventure Liliah encounters Luc, the Earl of Heightfield, a Gentleman of Temptation. Can she convince him to aid her? Is he capable of assistance given his dark past?

Temptation, desire, intrigue and love all wrapped in a delectable bundle! I absolutely loved the characters (except the Duke) and the author did a good job of portraying the angst of the lovers, the frustration of the sisters caught in their father's manipulation and the desire of Luc and Liliah.

Lots of errors in this wallpaper regency. Basic errors that a proofreader or editor should have caught (Savannah when her name is Samantha, a scene written twice (entering a ballroom, then entering it again)). Repeats of words. How many times can he nip her in one scene? He's not a puppy. Is her hair flaxen or golden? Pick one - they aren't the same color. Words that the author apparently looked up and didn't quite know how to use. "What would you have me converse?" springs to mind. And an estate is in the country and includes land. Your London townhouse is not an estate. " [Colors] decorated the entrance..." - does the author mean the door? Or the entire entrance? I certainly can't picture that. Modern words - he referred to her as a "skirt" - is he a 1950's gangster now? Modern expressions.

I can't figure out how Rebecca would be Lady Grace (that's her mother). She would be the Lady Rebecca or the Honorable Rebecca, depending on her parents' titles, which were not mentioned. Lord and Lady Grace are not titles, but how they are referred to.

A duke is addressed as "Your Grace" by a social inferior, "Duke" or by his name by an equal. Seems highly unlikely that a daughter would address a father as such. If so, be consistent and have her do so throughout the book.

And finally, the earl cannot take the title away from his son. Title inheritance is set up when the title is set up and cannot be changed. This is so so basic (has the author never seen Downton Abbey?). He can only take away money or property that is not entailed. Since the plot hinges on this, it completely falls down from this error.
