To be extraordinary is rare; to be unique is downright dangerous.
Rebecca Hunter thought senior year would be all about basketball games, parties, dances, and college applications. But when Becca’s absentee mom dies, things take a drastic turn. She has just inherited a superpower, but has no idea what it is. And now instead of worrying about homework, she’s got secret agents from the FBI at her door looking to recruit her.
Her days of being an ordinary seventeen-year-old are over, because she’s one of only one hundred people left in the world with superpowers. When a covert ops group, Project Lightning, offers to train her, they soon discover she doesn’t have just her mom’s power; she has more. And that’s never been seen before.
As they try to help her manipulate this new power, agents from Project Lightning go missing, and a few turn up dead. They’re being hunted. And when two men try to kidnap her, Becca realizes she’s being hunted as well. What was supposed to be an amazing senior year has turned into a brutal training to find the lost, protect those she loves, and harness her new power.
An Extraordinary Few is the first novel in The Extraordinary Series, a fast-paced urban fantasy romance filled with mystery, intrigue, and secret agents wielding supernatural powers, sure to capture any reader who enjoys science fiction romance or YA superhero fiction.
If you love cliffhangers, you'll love this book. Personally I hate them. That said, I'm going to read the next in this series. I really do hate it when an author knows how to do a proper cliffhanger!
2.5stars - liked the storyline, different from what i normally read but nothing really happened. MC was honestly a bit annoying could tell she was 17, making stupid mistakes constantly.
I liked the summary and book cover except the storyline was boring. The mc was annoying and unlikable. Weak and immature. I mean she whines a lot, throws a tantrum by going to an adult bar and accepts a drink from a weird guy who ends up almost raping her but doesn't even act thankful to being saved. The part where bullying was added was just too cliche. Gave up at halfway..just had it with the underdeveloped characters and slow storyline. Hard pass..DNF
Originally, I thought this book would give me Maximum Ride vibes from the summary (a group of young adults with superpowers led by a kickass female). Here's the thing: it didn't. But I enjoyed it regardless and it was a pleasant surprise~
Cons:
× I feel like there are too many instances where our MC doesn't find certain things suspicious or take action. For example, early on in the book, she notices a particular car stalking her movements over the course of a few days and...for some reason, tries to brush it off as nothing? It isn't until later on that she brings it to attention.
× *Big yawn at the typical MC that has a super special or rare power trope*
× I guessed what Gregory's power was after the incident at the bar. And it only becomes more obvious after that. I'm surprised the MC didn't pick up on the signs since they were slapping her in the face.
× We have a typical eye roll worthy "female automatically hates female MC because she has the attention of a guy she likes" trope. Bah. Can we please give female characters reasons to actually hate on female MC's for something more significant than a silly crush?
Pros:
× Even though our MC's crush on Gregory is cringey at times, it actually felt really well handled overall. And HOORAY for a YA female main character who is attracted to someone and doesn't declare it as love instantly. She knows it's a crush, she knows it's physical attraction, and yeah, she practically drools over him at times, but man. All the applause for how this was done and melded into a slow burn. Also, no love triangle even though the first half teases the possibility of one? Triple plus in my book.
× Easy and light read. The writing style is perfect for this type of story. Not too many details, but enough you're able to get the right picture in your head for scenes.
× Forehead kisses. Look, I'm such a sucker for these. Romantic, platonic, familiar -- I don't care what the relationship is. Give me some forehead kisses sprinkled throughout your book and you have me hook, line, and sinker.
× Girl friendship! Well, Ania is more like an older sister to our MC, but it's still so precious. Give me these friendships.
× I'm also a sucker for betrayal because hello angst. Got action, got fluff, got doubts, got laughs, and I got some angst. Perfect blend.
× I noticed the two books are out before I finished reading this one and bought them. I finished this and instantly had to go bump up the shipping speed because I need the next installment asap.
I like the love story of this book. Gregory vs Tony just makes you keep thinking what will happen next in Becca's life. Lots of telling in the story from Becca's point of view but it has enough strength to keep you reading. I love the twist at the end, it makes you wonder who is the enemy. I don't want to reveal much but I recommend it for all who like young adult with superpowers and academy type of story. You definitely would want to read more at the end, so grab it if love to read series.
I wanted to take a break from the fantasy books I have been reading and gave this one a go. If I were an early teenager, this would have been amazing. However, as an adult, the pacing is ridiculously quick and shallow. There are few moments of inner monologue where the pace returns to normal, but then it ramps back up just as quickly. So just because it wasn't for me as an adult, doesn't mean a teenager wouldn't love it.
Interesting premise. The book starts out really well but becomes less and less believable as the story progresses. I didn’t hate it, but certainly didn’t love it either. The cliffhanger ending was annoying, in that nothing was resolved in this book IMO. Needs a bit of polishing in line editing: missing words occurred more than a handful of times. Not sure if I will continue this series.
YA xmen in secret government department. I enjoyed the journey of the mfc, and have theories floating my my head of what's happening that has me reaching for the next book in the series. This title caught my attention on stuff your kindle day, and I'd already downloads the next two books before I finished this one.
It was an easy enjoyable read. The whole book was mainly about the MC learning her powers, fighting her crush on her mentor, and hiding away in secret places with her team. The main action happened at the end. I like all the powers and mystery laid out in the story, it made it hard to know who I should be trusting and kept me wanting more answers.
This is just badly written. Horribly, badly written. The story makes no sense, the actions of the characters make no sense. The plot makes no sense. Everything is forced and the story could not be more cliche.
Excellent writing, addictive storyline, deep and well-wrought characters, perfect pacing and conceptual Extraordinary yet all-too-human beings who help this series starter soar. I can’t wait to read more!
Between a 3 and 4 star. I enjoyed the storyline but felt that some details were missing that would have enhanced the book. Also, definitely ended on a cliffhanger so likely will be reading the next one.
I really enjoyed this story. Full of action, lots of angst, fast-paced, and twists and turns. It was so good I turned around and bought the second book and binge-read that one the next day!
Wow, this book was not what I expected! It took me by surprise, and I couldn’t even put it down. The story has my full attention, and I can’t wait to see what happens next
I finished it two weeks ago and I remember three names. It doesn’t have the development that you expect for the premise, which is really good.
Teenager adquiere powers when her mother dies and is recruited by the FBI? Sing me in anytime.
I hate the ending. I know there’s two more books and I’m going to read them, but the death of THE only character that is worth something it puts reading the remaining two books on hold.
I can’t with the FC. I know she’s a teenager and all that but she’s 17, not 13. The hot instructor is obviously a must cause there can’t be a master-teacher relationship in a book with a girl as a main character without a forbidden romance. Obviously.
I think the worst are all the thoughts and inner comments about how hot that dude is -I don’t remember his name-. You don’t know which is his power till the end even if you can imagine it 20 pages into the book so it makes sense but it’s unnecessary, the story will develop exactly the same.
The big boss -don’t remember his name either- gave me the creeps. At the first shitty thing he does I will beat the crap out of him and leave. He is definitely not one of the good ones.
I don’t have comments about the new recruits cause the one who stays with the FC is well, obviously in love with her, and you only see a peak of other two, a pick me girl who is a bully too -duh- and Dexter. We love Dexter. I like that kid even not knowing anything about him. Hopefully it remains that way.
A great, contemporary YA fantasy/sci fi novel about a teenage girls whose mother dies, leaving her with extraordinary powers. Suddenly, strange vehicles are chasing her, the FBI is trying to recruit her, and she's still trying to figure out what exactly her powers entail and how to use them.
I loved the main character and her voice. The story is filled with non-stop movement which leaves you unable to put the book down. And even though the book just came out, I already can't wait for the sequel. I recommend this for anyone who liked X-Men, and for lovers of contemporary fantasy.
