“T. R. Schumer had me at ‘programmer’. I was a programmer before I retired and it was so nice to finally read a novel that talked about the binary number system, deadlines, bugs and staying up all night to fix the bugs before your deadline!” Reviewer’s comment, indieBRAG

“Forges a sensational protagonist and an engaging story...” —Kirkus Reviews
HUM is a sexy, supernatural thriller interwoven with real computer science, and tightly wound with breathtaking action...
“Writing code came so naturally to me, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do...” Twenty years into her highly lucrative career, and San Francisco based programmer, Lilly Hoffnung’s résumé reads like a who’s who of the biggest names in tech. She now holds a coveted reputation as a fixer who always meets her deadlines, but this was before she accepted the offer from the AI startup known as Exousía, it was before the shocking death of a lover, and before she began to hear the Hum.
It’s been two years since Lilly woke up one morning hearing a strange sound. Constant, and inescapable, this low frequency hum has resonated inside her head ever since. She’s never been able to track down its source, and no doctor has been able to find anything wrong with her. Lilly’s last hope is an obscure, Hum research project run out of Menlo Park. So far, the only thing she’s learned from it is that she is not alone.
As the Hum grows in intensity, Lilly is desperate to hold on to her professional life, to keep working, and to push through the pain—unaware that there are others around her; a friend, a mysterious stranger, who are watching...waiting... For the first time, Lilly is now struggling to nail down a seemingly untenable software defect. She has a hard deadline looming, while a billion-dollar tech company hemorrhages cash—Lilly never imagined her career could crash this suddenly. The Hum will forever alter the course of her life, perhaps even for the better, but only if she can survive it...
T. R. SCHUMER is an Amazon bestselling author, 2018 indieBRAG Medallion Honoree and a 2017 Self-Publishing Review Book Awards Finalist. She’s also an instrument rated pilot, sailor, scuba diver, and world traveler who has visited more than 90 countries. A fourth generation Florida native and graduate of the University of South Florida, she once copiloted a single-engine aircraft around the world, and is now in the much slower process of sailing around the world. She currently lives aboard a sailboat with her husband somewhere in Southeast Asia.
The story starts with Lilly, a successful programmer, sought for her expertise at finding bugs in code and getting the job done. She has worked in the industry for over twenty years and is based in the tech hub of San Francisco. Her reputation as a fixer and her ability to meet strict deadlines, leaves her able to pick and choose where to work. She has worked on numerous tech start-ups and the latest one she has joined is Excousia.
The only downside to her present life, is the constant HUM that started some two years ago. It is a persistent noise in her head. She has seen all the doctors and had numerous tests, all to no avail. She finds out about a HUM research project at Menlo Park and tries to find out more. But, she is not the only one with this problem. It seems there are large groups of people worldwide being affected by this HUM and nobody knows its cause or origin.
Her pain increases as the HUM intensifies, affecting her ability to work effectively, just as a large deadline looms. They have a bug in the system and must produce a working copy before the deadline to keep the companies investors on board. She continues to try and push through the pain, but soon has to cope with the sudden death of a lover and the possible loss of her job and the company’s downfall.
The pressure is on, but she unknowingly has a friend on her side and a stranger in the shadows, watching her and waiting to see what becomes of her. Will she be able to solve the software bug issue, save the company, or will she succumb to the pain of the HUM, like many others? The course of events could change her life for the better, but first she has to survive!
As a sufferer of Chronic Pain for many years, this was quite easy to read and understand how this constant HUM was affecting the main character and how it had led to others taking their own lives. Something as constant as this pain can change your life forever and you have to look for other ways to survive. I wish I was as good with computers as Lilly, but I not too bad. A very interesting concept and lead you to worry about the characters in many different areas. Her work, her reputation, the company and possible loss of investors, her debilitating ‘illness’ (HUM) and what might become of her. Where did the HUM start and why was it affecting so many people?
As I said, a great read, which I finished in one sitting and which I would love to read more of. Is this going to be a series or is it just a one off? Surely we have to find out what happens to Lilly and what the HUM has to do with everyone? A great introduction to how far AI and tech have taken over parts of our lives and is so integrated into our homes as well.
