About the author

By the age of ten Eric Zweig was already a budding sports fanatic who was filling his school news books with game reports instead of current events. Eric’s first book, Hockey Night in the Dominion of Canada (1992), was an historical novel set in the early days of professional hockey. He has been working with Dan Diamond and Associates, consulting publisher to the National Hockey League, since 1996. As a freelance writer, Eric is the author or co-author of many non-fiction sports books for adults and children. He is a member of the Society for International Hockey Research and the Society for American Baseball Research. A former member of the Toronto Blue Jays grounds crew, he still has a champagne bottle from the club’s first American League East Division title celebration in 1985.

Soccer kids will thoroughly enjoy this book. And "soccer moms" will find it a wealth of information to help them communicate with their child in this new language and life of soccer. I had a son that played soccer in high school and on to young adult teams in the community. Let's just say I failed him at being a "soccer mom" and having this book at my fingertips might have helped me understand this phase of his life.

The four chapters include: Playing the Game, The Origins of Soccer, Soccer Around the World, and Soccer in North America. These take you from understanding the rules and techniques of the game to the long history of the game. Pictures range from historic to up to the moment glimpses of the game.

This is a must-have book for families with a budding soccer enthusiast and for school libraries.

Around the world fans are following the game of soccer and celebrating their favorite players. If you want to become part of the craze this guide is a great way to introduce you to how soccer is played, its origins, what’s happening around the world and in North America.

Soccer enthusiasts will find information from referee Mark Geiger that will inspire readers. There are lots of colorful photography that shares the game in action with different people from all over the globe. There are even illustrations of the game from long ago. If you want to know why soccer is called soccer and not Association Football or “rugger” you will get to read and learn all about it in this handy guide. Diagrams help readers learn how to field their team, have fun playing question and answer games and its world history. Do you know who Cristian Ronaldo is? He was named the best Portuguese player of all time. That’s amazing.

Parents and teachers will want to have this guide in their libraries. This small book is great for travel and can fit into any backpack for quick reference. I usually have difficulty understanding all the rules when watching a soccer match. I get that the ball needs to make it in the goal, but why certain players can’t be too far ahead of another player (offsides) or what actions constitute a penalty kick or goal kick or a throw-in have me completely confused.

With the World Cup being a more exciting event due to cable TV and the increase of soccer in communities and schools from as young as Kindergarten, soccer has become a much more popular sport. I was actually surprised to learn that in 2016, the two top-earning athletes were soccer players, earning more than LeBron James, Roger Federer, or Cam Newton. By combining their salary and endorsements, Cristiano Ronaldo earned $86 million and Lionel Messi earned $81.4 million.

The book explains how the game is played including the rules, the use of yellow and red cards, and terminology. It also teaches the history of soccer and how it made its way to the United States. Then it gives an inside looks into soccer around the world and in the United States.

Soccer fans of all ages will enjoy this book and for kids that maybe haven’t played or are thinking about playing, this gives them an idea of what the sport involves both at a youth level and a professional level.

All the books in this series are ABSOLUTELY amazing! You will want to become an "absolute expert" in all the topics this series has written. In true National Geographic Kids fashion these books are filled to the brim with facts, tidbits, pictures, illustrations as well as tips, tricks and little known facts from experts in the field. Kids, and parents alike, are going to get lost in these books and want to learn all there is to know on each of these fascinating topics. I loved learning along with my boys and getting to become an "expert" on these cool and interesting things. I find that now I know more and want to continue to learn about each of these topics. These books are perfect for your home library or your child's classroom.

Great series for children! The design of the text was really considered in creating the book. Details like the table of contents contained in soccer balls, "talk the talk" to share soccer lingo, and how the field is set up with a great visual all will keep children engaged in this book. There is a lot of text which could be daunting for younger readers but it strikes me as a book that children will flip around in and pick and choose their interesting areas. National Geographic includes their excellent trademark photography as well as vintage photographs and drawings. Seeing the older soccer balls (and the world's oldest soccer ball) was so interesting. The series includes other "expert" titles such as sharks, dinosaurs, and outer space.

This was made for children, but as an adult who needed to teach herself the basics of soccer and do so quickly, this was a great book for that. I just wish there was a section that explained some of the soccer moves and that the section explaining the leagues went a bit more in-depth into some of the divisions. It explained information relevant to a US soccer player well, but seeing as how some of the best players and teams are not in the US, it does a disservice to soccer fans (or the adults learning about soccer for the soccer obsessed children in their lives).
