To be fair, that’s nothing new. And being an immortal enchanter, death is more of an annoyance than a finality.
But when she starts to suspect that the person trying to kill her might be the one responsible for her parents’ murder, it’s time to end her stalker’s game.
However, the games played by The Clan - the oldest vampires in existence - have only just begun.

An edge of your seat paranormal mystery that keeps you turning page after page!
Another episode in an edge of your seat paranormal mystery! The characters are well developed and January keeps getting better and better and more head strong much to the dislike of the Clan. I loved the demon rabbit too! This plot has so many twists and turns, will January follow what the Clan wants her to do. Will she be able to run her bakery without having to do the Clan's bidding? Will she figure out who murdered her parents? And what about her estranged sister? Where is she and what is she doing now? She is being pulled this way and that and just wants to be left alone to do what she feels she has to do regardless of what the Clan wants of her. But why is she being stalked and who wants to kill her? With humor and edge of your seat scenes you can't missed with this paranormal mystery at times very dark! A real page turner! I received an ARC from the author, but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Standalones, but a well written series! If you love Sooky, you'll love this series. Each book gets better, as do the characters and the plots are suspense-filled, intriguing and action-packed.
Death's Reckless Reaper, Prequel - An introduction to January. I'm glad I read Death's Dark Horse first, since the anticipation of discovering what her other form was well fed by the delay in revealing the truth. This little story starts with her move to Paris and her experiences with her first vampire marked for death and a twist. Read after Death's Dark Horse is my recommendation, if at all. The author said she was going to rewrite Reaper and make it 1.5 instead of a prequel. 5*
Death's Dark Horse #1 - A well written, suspense filled story with a unique and surprising character and many other interesting characters, along with humor thorough out the story. The plot is well thought out and the reader is kept guessing as to what is so specially about the main character: her job is surprising and you may guess at her animal. I guessed it but put it out of my mind and surprise I was right. I've read many of Ms. Loren's books and she gets better with each new book. 5*
Death's Hexed Hobnobs #2 - The story takes place a year after Death's Dark Horse ends. This book is amazing! I felt like I was reading a Butcher novel. This well written, action paced, suspense filled novel kept me prisoner to its pages. The plot twisted like an angry rodeo bull and the suspense never stopped, along with humor thorough out the story . The characters, while well thought out in DDH, become stronger and evoke all sorts of emotions from the reader. I can't wait to see what #3 is has in stock for the reader.5*
Death's Endless Enchanter #3 - This book starts right where Death's Hexed Hobnobs ended. Well written, filled with suspense and intrigue, humor and well developed characters with realistic dialog - (not stupid dialog). Although the book concludes the issues that arise in this book, it's a cliffhanger and the book doesn't end the way the reader would expect. 5*
Death's Ethereal Enemy #4 - This book starts a month after Death's Endless Enchanter ended. Well written, intriguing with the suspense starting later in the chapters than usual, but making up for the delay. Still with humor, but some darkness appearing and new revelations as the plot twists and the pace picks up. 5*
Death’s Last Laugh #5 – This is a whooper! There’s a lot happening in this book: action; intrigue; suspense; romance; and humor. Another well-written story that keeps the reader immersed in the pages, and too soon, the end is reached. This very substantial book with it’s well thought out twists and turns, along with the continuous growth of the characters makes it hard to put the book down. So ease up with the tea. I’m so glad I contacted the author to review her books. She hasn’t disappointed me yet and she has traveled a long was from Larch Hall. 5*
Ethereal Enemy’s Death (Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of the book and decided to provide my honest review, which I have.) Death’s Ethereal Enemy is Book Four of the January Chevalier Mystery series. Book four still maintains as much excitement, mystery and exuberance as book one which I also reviewed. The difference in book four is that the characters are better known as well as the plot. To the author’s credit however, both the storyline and the characters’ development grew in sync with each other. Even though I went from book one to book four and felt like I missed a lot of information, the writing itself allowed me not to feel lost at sea. The familiarity and consistency of the author’s writing is the link throughout. Make no mistake, book four has a lot of new and exciting, ethereal, dark horse adventure, mystery and romance to make the leap worthwhile. The main character has completed quite a bit of self-reflection and self-learning and has become an even stronger mission driven woman than described in book one. The same group of individuals are engaged in the storyline with some more than others. The author’s writing stands the test of time and still creates the page-turning storyline that continues to whisper as you read, “just one more, just one more page.” RECOMMENDATION: BUY THE BOOK, find a comfy spot to read, and before you know it you’ll be having a fabulous time, again. –Tex. P.S. I bought the book.
I have never read this series before and did t realize it was part of a series when I read it. It’s easy enough to figure out. The main character January is a enchantress and a black unicorn. Her tutor has died and she’s trying to learn what being an enchantress means. Whatever happened in the previous book her friends were being punished for it now by the old ones (the first vampires) January is also a pack leader. While juggling many things including finding out who killed her parents, making the pack bar success etc someone is trying to kill her. This book had many ups and downs and curve balls. I can’t say too much because I don’t know the series well enough to know what would be considered a spoiler. I’ll just say it was a fun book to read and will go back and start the series from the beginning. I’ve read other books by this author and really enjoyed them! I would recommend this book especially if u r familiar with the series.
This is book 4 of the January Chevalier cosy paranormal series. I really like the January character, although I'm not sure I'd like to meet her on a dark night! In this book she becomes rather more expert at using her magical skills, finding more and more abilities, this leads to some very exciting encounters. However it has to be said that alongside the excitement is a lot of humour, I particularly love the magical homicidal bunny, which is a genius invention. This plot is fast-moving and exciting, a little darker than most 'cosy' mysteries, still no overt sex or very explicit violence, and this allows it to be more dramatic and have a wider range of characters. Overall this is a great book and highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of cosy mysteries and/or paranormal adventures. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, but this review is voluntarily written and based solely on my own opinions.
January finds herself in a very complicated situation. And even though some things are resolved, in the end the situation is still complicated! The bigger fish is yet to be caught…
I really liked this supernatural mystery, but there are a LOT of different things and persons to keep track of. You certainly need to keep your wits about you! I definitely found it intriguing. But the story bounced around maybe a bit too much. I think it would have benefitted from one clear storyline: then I probably would’ve given it 5 stars. But it did surprise: just when you thought you knew something, there was a twist!
It’s not a standalone book, it’s part of a series. So I recommend reading the previous books in this series first.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and voluntarily posted an honest review.
January's parents have died and she thinks it was foul play but the authorities say it was carbon monoxide poisoning. And she's still being ordered around by the clan. She got her bakery covered when she has to leave town, Danny and Lucy are covering for her. While Ryan and Bella have been sent to the states she has Miri running the tavern. At any moment Emerson could show up but at least she concocted a spell where he can't watch her without her knowing anymore. Thing are getting down and duty now and January is suppose to just be the pretty little enforcer in the background. But that doesn't last long and then thing start to change. And believe me this is where it gets way interesting. Can't wait for the next book. I received an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review
I am enjoying the January Chevalier books enormously and book 4 in the series does not disappoint.
Things are getting serious for January, deadly serious, as a meeting with The Clan, and the games they've arranged for her, show.
There are twists and turns in the story, there are new characters introduced, January is trying to keep her business afloat, whilst having to respond on demand to the Clan....she's a busy girl!!
Throughout there is a thread of humour, and a light touch from the author, that make this a perfect read for a winter afternoon.
Great story. Lots of intricacies while January learns her role in the world. Is January a bad gal trying to do good? Or a good gal who has done bad? Difficult questions. But who really cares. January is simply a great character: certainly uncertain. The humor is both straight and twisted. The story was quite compelling for me.Like many well written TV series, to me, this story represents a subplot of an overarching story. Also, like a TV series, the bulk of this story (or episode) is self contained with hints about the overarching plot line. I love it. I hope that you do as well.
I was provided this book as an ARC by the author; however, the review is my honest opinion.
Another great story in this series. Fun, and fast-paced, January and a wascally wabbit will keep you entertained for the almost 400 pages of this book.
There has been another murder, and this time January is being chased by someone who isn't using magical means to do it... which is a change :P
She keeps growing as a character and in you. You will find yourself wishing that she will be able to make her dream reality, and that, finally! that bakery will be the one thing she must take care off.
Another solid story in a series that has everything to charm the lovers of the genre.
So hard to tell the bad guys from the badder guys!
Poor January Chevalier starts out this latest book by burying her parents. Things go downhill from there!
Being killed by family, alleged friends, and enemy alliances - never a dull moment.
The worst thing for January seems to be that what she has valued most since returning to Hailfield are her relationships with others, and her dreams, perhaps a chance to follow, maybe.....
But alas, much stands in her way.
Cheering for the kick butt Unicorn - and for seeing more of that destructive wrascally wabbit!
I received a copy of this book from the author and I voluntarily leave my review. This is book 4 of the series and I absolutely loved it. January the main character has her powers increasing and getting more abilities. The magical homicidal bunny was absolutely hilarious and I had a good belly laugh. This is just another fantastic read full of laughs and mystery. All January wants is to get back to her bakery but there’s always something happening. I definitely recommend this book, it’s well worth the read.
Wow! That rabbit is something else! The tale continues. Yes each book is stand alone but when you put them all together and binge read in order, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts! January keeps growing her powers yet remains under the control of the Clan. Will January ever get back to her bakery full time? Who/What killed her parents? The plots stay twisty and creative. If you have not read any book in this series, give one a try. I bet you will like it.
Another Riveting Episode This is a great episode in this paranormal series. It just keeps getting better and better. This series is best when read in order, but each episode can stand-alone. This one ends with a lead in to the next story. It is almost a cliffhanger. The story is nice and tight. It picks up where the last one ended. I can’t wait for the next one to come out.
This series is so much fun, you can't help but read it from front to back all in one go. The bunny is hilarious (Jinx is the James Bond of the bunny set haha), and I can't wait to see what happens with him in the next book. January is learning more about being an enchanter, and more about the extent of her magic. Fantastic series, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
Although different than her other series, I've lost track of how many Ruby Loren books I've read. The latest January Chevalier book is an enjoyable, well-written suspense (maybe the best mystery of this series to date) and since the primary characters are already familiar if you read the other books in this series this is like a visit with an old friend.
This series just keeps getting better! The plot running through the series has so many twisty threads it’s like one of their spells that will keep you spinning while you try to unravel it. The characters are an intriguing, if unreliable group of personalties too…How many demonic black bunnies do you know?
Really hate joining a series in midstream at book 4, but it mostly makes sense. Allow a weekend for this family-friendly one as it is really a bit much to cram into a day. I read an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
Try to imagine your world imploding with you right in the middle. Wat do you think you would do? Well it's nothing compared to what January a to face, all while she tries to live a normal life!!! What a new page turner! On to the next !!!
Wow is all I can say. The suspense holds you and doesn’t let go until you’re totally finished. Can’t wait for another one. Received a free book but reviewing because I LOVE 💗 it.
Another great paranormal.. More twists and turns as the story continues.. Never a cliffhanger.. Always leaves in a good spot. Can't wait for the saga to continue
