Colors have meaning, many firearms have personalities, and Bear is real: these are the linchpins of Zerk’s world, even if no one else seems to understand. That he is may be crazy and probably is stupid he acknowledges without taking offense.
Raised and trained by The Old Man for a war in America which never came, Zerk soldiers on in a nation crippled by a zombie apocalypse, standing firm for Old Glory and putting the mission first. Mindful of the nature of colors and the input of Bear, his only friend (and whom only Zerk can hear), he stands tall for the red, white and blue, just as he was taught. Alone in far too many ways Zerk hunts zombies while striving to be both a good man and the American warrior that he was intended (by the Old Man) to become.
Tragic, heroic, and human, Zerk fights for a country that didn’t care that he existed before the outbreak, facing a terrible mystery and even greater challenge, aided only by Bear, an unspeaking boy, a motor-mouth roller-girl, and an elderly priest.
Born and raised in the icy wastelands of North Dakota, RW Krpoun joined the US Army, serving two enlistments before being honorably discharged at Fort Hood, Texas. Delighted to discover a land where snow was a novelty, he settled in Texas and took up a career in law enforcement, serving thirty years before retiring. His service included a Sheriff's Office and two Municipal police agencies, as well as two enlistments in the Texas National Guard as a Criminal Investigator.
RW lives on lakeside acreage with his lovely and amazingly tolerant wife Ann, and a band of ill-mannered animals who are all highly photogenic. His hobbies include reading, history, various forms of shooting, collecting battle-ready examples of medieval weaponry, and learning to use such weapons.
Produced in the same mold of another similar book, Odd Billy Todd we have a traditionally handicapped person if he were in a modern environment - is now reverted to the top of Alpha male category as the world as we know it has ended and men of a certain skill set reign supreme. The book is well written, and a gun enthusiast dream. Has the feeling of a long series I look forward to book 2.
Book Cover: 1/5
Favorite Line: “The way to Hell is broad and smooth. Like the thigh of a handcuffed girl.”
Enjoyable and clever. Odd and compelling protagonist.
Set possibly in the same world/time as Payload and its sequels, this one is a satisfying zombie and wasteland caper. It missed a five star mark only due to some “what is going on” when we have five groups apparently mixed up in shenanigans and the reader has to have some patience to stick with it.
Worth reading? You bet. I’ll remember Zerk fondly. He’s a pretty standout fella. Plus Bear.
Tactical realism in fantasy settings are something I’ve come to appreciate in all of RW’s novels and this is the first time I’ve read his zombie work; holds up just as well. Regardless how far from normal his setting is, the characters live in real conditions that help immerse the reader. Great book, bring more!
When the reader meets Zero short, for zirconium, he travels akin hunting herds of zombies. The next part of the story involves rescuing people from said zombies. Next come s the mystery of who is controlling zombies and their purpose. Read on this is a good shoot em up story.
This one is really good. Be aware that it’s pretty rough going in this new life-after-zombies, so a lot of killing and dying is happening. The novel has a proper ending, but openings for further development.
Much like Grog, this book is well written and doesn't skimp on the details. Can't help but love this author's take on responsibility, ethics and morality as well!
