WHAT KIND OF WOMAN WAS SHE?

Beautiful young widow Ancilla Martin knew what kind of man Lord Devin Langley was.

As owner of one of England's finest racing stables, he was a devotee of fine horseflesh, the thrills of the turf, and the excitement of high and reckless wagering.

As possessor of one of England's greatest names and fortunes, he had his pick of lovely women of pleasure for his diversion, and of proud titled ladies for when he might at last decide to marry.

Ancilla knew all too well what category of companion he considered her when he made her his most immodest proposal. But if Ancilla was sure she knew all there was to know about the scandalous Lord Langley, she soon discovered how little she knew about herself....

This coulda/woulda/shoulda been better. Maybe 2 1/2 stars. Too many cliches mixed in with a rather fascinating story about how a woman was bartered and misunderstood by all the men in her life. That her female cousin (a member of the aristocracy) was pimping her out as if she were an abbess (not the cuddly sweet female agency first style abbess we see in Regencies now, more the hard-hearted business woman variety) -- that Devin was so quick to think the worst of Ancilla -- well, haven't we all walked through stupid misunderstanding hell before we get to the end? The couple does sleep together early on and there's no pregnancy: I suppose that should get a tick for good job, somewhat unusual.

Hewitt is a good writer though and I'll gladly read more of her books if they cross my path.

really awful. never felt any rapport between hero and heroine. heroine just seemed beaten on all sides, no family, no friends, fending for herself. hero seems really callous towards her situation felt there was a great deal of running around, but for no reason. the great seduction never occurred, the horses were fine, the mystery was blah, and the odious cousins never really got their comeuppance
