Forgetting them was near impossible, but choosing one was harder.

Declan had kept his secret for so long; its revelation could destroy his family. Being gay wasn’t it. The truth was far worse—he’d fallen for his stepbrother, Ollie.

Returning home for the holidays wasn’t something he did very often, but his mom insisted on it that year. His trip home didn’t turn out as he expected; Declan’s world was flipped on its head by a sexy stranger. Now he was torn, unable to get Batman out of his head and Ollie out of his heart.

By day Ann Grech lives in the corporate world and can be found sitting behind a desk typing away at reports and papers or lecturing to a room full of students. She graduated with a PhD in 2016 and is now an over-qualified nerd. Glasses, briefcase, high heels and a pencil skirt, she’s got the librarian look nailed too. If only they knew! She swears like a sailor, so that’s got to be a hint. The other one was “the look” from her tattoo artist when she told him that she wanted her kids initials “B” and “J” tattooed on her foot. It took a second to register that it might be a bad idea.
She’s never entirely fit in and loves escaping into a book—whether it’s reading or writing one. But she’s found her tribe now and loves her MM book world family. She dislikes cooking, but loves eating, can’t figure out technology, but is addicted to it, and her guilty pleasure is Byron Bay Cookies. Oh and shoes. And lingerie. And maybe handbags too. Well, if we’re being honest, we’d probably have to add her library too given the state of her credit card every month (what can she say, she’s a bookworm at heart)!
She also publishes her raunchier short stories under her pen name, Olive Hiscock.

*** Stepbrothers, Ollie and Declan, neither "came out" to the other.
Now, years later at a masquerade bash at a gay club near home; masks on, they hook up. Holy Hotness Batman ! Declan doesn't know who the magnificent Batman was. For the holidays at home they talk, hang out at their folks home, and still, Declan wants Ollie like he did years ago.

Later they get caught in the rain and Declan saves Ollie's life from the careening truck. All bets were off after that, because each man decides to tell the other, they want to be together. The life threatening event brought the strong emotions forward; fears fell away.

Great characters, just enough angst, plus their hot sexy times, makes this fun.
This is a terrific short story and the epilogue was fun.
ENJOY !

3.5 ⭐️ This was a sweet, low angst, (somewhat taboo) read. Ollie and Dec are stepbrothers. They’ve each had a thing for each other for years. When they left for college, they lost touch. At the insistence of Dec’s Mom, they’re both home for the holidays.

This is a quick read with a sweet epilogue. I need to try some other stories by this author.

A first time read for the author with this book. And I loved it. Beautifully written so that the hot chemistry jumps through at you. This had me right from the first page. The title of this is perfect for this short story too.  Yah I'll be stalking this author now.
Declan loved visiting Church club when he was home. Days before Xmas they held a masquerade party. A hot connection to Batman made Green Arrow zing.  Includes: closeted gay, stepbrother fantasies, danger, and hot hot sexy scenes.

Christmas should be a time for joy,
it should be a time for the whole family to connect.
Not for Declan, he was keeping his distance from his family,
how could he pretend to play happy families,
when all he wanted to do was kiss his stepbrother and more...

Declan's whole world was turned upside down when he was a young boy.
One minute his mother was struggling, working hard, trying to provide for him,
and the next she was swept up by a man, a very rich man , who had a son the same age as him.

Their teenage years were spent fighting , for their prospective parents attention,
and for their place in the family dynamics.
It took a while for Declan to acknowledge his true feelings for Ollie.
How could he want his stepbrother ?
How could he pretend to hate him , when all he wanted was to kiss him?
How could he risk his family falling apart at his confession ?
No, he couldn't do that to his mother, and the boy he knew he loved desperately.
So Declan ran, he moved away as soon as he could, and tried to keep his distance.

But is was Christmas, and his mother had summoned him, so he had no choice but to return.
Declan has a night out, the day before the festivities begin,
he goes to the local Gay Bar who are hosting a super heroes party.
There he bumps in to Batman, and boy oh boy do they connect.
They have a very hot, very intense, short lived " private party"
Suddenly the alarm at the bar goes off, and pandemonium ensues,
Declan looses Batman in the chaos, and has to return home,
with the taste of him still very fresh on his mouth and his mind.

How could he fall for another guy, when he was in love with Ollie?
Could he really want two people at once ?
Declan was confused and conflicted, but he also still had the festivities to go through.

Declan and Ollie decide that they need to talk before they leave town again.
Ollie is desperate to know why Declan hates him, he wants to know what he may have done.
The two go out for a drink, after a good night they are walking back when tragedy strikes.
An awful event, that will leave your blood running cold, has both men in hospital.

Forced to analyse their feelings, and their lives , what will the men decide?
How will Declan move on with his heart so broken ?
How will Ollie confront him , and demand answers ?

Christmas is truly magical in this tale,
It will weave it's magic around Declan and Ollie and their parents.
A lovely epilogue to a lovely story ...

Given her successful Unexpected series I was hopeful Ann Grech would deliver the same sexy charm in her new “taboo” holiday romance, Always Him, and I was not disappointed. She brings on the feels with just the right amount of warring emotional angst tempered by lust and passion that can’t be denied.

On the heels of arriving in his childhood hometown for the holidays Declan decides to attend a Christmas masquerade themed party at an elite underground gay sex club. While at the superhero themed event he encounters a hookup that rocks his world in a hot ass opening scene and sends his emotions in a tailspin. But before the two masked men can make any future plans they are separated in a night of panic.

One of the things that struck me right up front in this novella is the author’s subtle projections as to the fears we may possess at where our world is headed and the difference one should try to strive to make in life. With hints to the current man in power in America waging war on the LGBTQ community, to likenesses to the Vegas shooting and Pulse (and the fear that has further permeated a community), even Arabic prayers and bomb vests, to giving back to our Veteran’s and changing the world via business practices, Grech does not shy away from what we should all be talking about. Don’t get me wrong, this talk does not overtake the story and doesn’t feel as if someone is on a pulpit, but it is done in a way that made an impact on this reader, and I for one appreciate Ann not shying away from her feelings.

Told in first person (which I might add Grech does very well) twenty-five-year old Declan finds himself pining for what might have been with the “masked man” while feeling he has betrayed the lust he carries for his step-brother, Ollie. Coupled with the guilt he harbors from long ago deserting Ollie and hiding his sexuality from his family, his forbidden desire, he’s struggling to find his way.

The holiday season is the caveat that brings these two estranged brothers together to dance around their feelings. But if you’re expecting a lot of Christmas hijinks from this novella you won’t find that here, the yuletide celebration is a mere backdrop for emotions to play out and discoveries to be made. One of which had me wanting Dec’s mom to me my mom!

Declan’s point of view throughout most of the story, building things up, his secret longing and fear, breathes life into the low ridden angst that ratchets this taboo tale up. And as things begin to climax and revelations may occur we get some of Ollie’s voice, at just the right times. Let me just say, Ollie’s hurt, his despair…OMG, it took my breath away!

Each man warring in his own private way, neither able to express themselves, a freak, harrowing accident gives them the time they need but still, they can’t seem to muster the courage to admit how they truly feel.

Declan is a bit repetitious with his thoughts but this works for him, it is him, because after all he is totally confused. And I found myself getting frustrated at the indecisiveness of these two men, yet in the next breath their feelings make perfect sense. Grech’s well timed use of this apprehension and frustration is the snake charmer that piqued my interest and made me want to read more to know where their journey took them. Like a rubbernecker at an accident I was unable to divert my attention.

Then when it gets to the hot and steamy that Ann knows how to bring so well, and the lovely little twist at the end, I was hooked!

Ann Grech’s Always Him is a beautiful read for anyone who has ever found themselves battling their heart and mind. Fearful of going after the one thing, that one person, they have always wanted and thought they could never have. Not just a holiday read this page turner will touch your soul any time of year.

Dex and Ollie remind me alot of a gay Romeo and Juliet.

Dex has known he was gay for a few years but kept it locked tightly in the cupboard due to fear. Fear of disappointing his mother, fear of rejection by his step father, fear of disgust by his step brother and fear of violence from the general population.

After avoiding going home for years for the holidays he can no longer ignore his mothers requests, with one final night of freedom before having to go back in the closet he visits the underground gay nightclub masquerade ball where he meets Batman.

Ollie has lived the last few years wondering. Wondering why his step brother left, wondering what he did wrong, wondering how to make everything better. Living a lie is wearing Ollie down deciding to finally getting some answers Ollie goes home but not before he lets himself be free.

Im not normally a fan of this style of book Ann has written it with style, flair and did the guys story justice in the unique style that is her

Him

Good read.
Step brother's who had feelings for each other but afraid of showing .

Declan moved across country just to get away from his feelings.

On returning for the Christmas he hooks up with Batman in a costume party. Of course the chemistry was off the hook but it never let him forget that Ollie is his only love.
Getting the characters on the same page was interesting.

Wow, just wow. I don't know what to write coz I don't want to give it away. Truth be told it's a beautiful story of love and how sometimes accepting the love we see can be the most beautiful thing of all.

Ann did not disappoint with well developed characters and a beautiful story that definitely has me wanting more

I think the book died for me right from the begining. A dance club that was called a sex club. Rooms to have sex in, that could be seen from the dance floor! Sorry, but that is disgusting!!!

On top of that all the drama. Nope! Not good!

I really enjoyed this holiday story. It begins with Declan coming home for Christmas to stay with his mum & step father. Ollie, his straight step brother also comes home for the holiday. Declan has lusted after Ollie for the past 10 years. Declan has a super hot connection to a man he meets at a club but doesn't know who he is apart from him being dressed as Batman.
Declan struggles with his confusion regarding having feelings for 2 unobtainable men. I enjoyed watching Declan & Ollie dance around each other, both unaware of the others feelings.
It was well written with likeable characters. A sweet, sexy short story perfect for the holidays.

3.5*

I battled to decide how to rate this.

It is well written for the most part. The characters are interesting and there is a bit of a plot. Unfortunately, the "plot twists" were obvious from the book summary. The book seemed to miss out details to the back story and all-in-all, there was no actual curiosity as I mostly knew what was coming next. Also, some of the interactions seemed... off. What was said and what they did, did not always line up.

I can't completely write this book off however because I actually enjoyed it. I will definitely read more from this author. I was just looking for a little... more

*~~*ARC kindly provided by the author to me in exchange for an honest review *~~*

I really liked this story and how the plot was displayed. Books with kind of a "taboo" topic, like in this case, being in love with the stepbrother, are hooking me whenever I read things like this in a blurb. Of course, because the guys are stepbrothers, there isn't any incest and it's good how it is. :D

Still I loved how this was reaon for Declan to hide his love for Ollie - for years. The fact that he also hides his sexuality to the whole family didn't make it easy to carry this secret too. It's a huge burden and I can totally understand why he's hesitant - and the author made this conflict clear and visible, also showed why he is hesitant and that Declan is thinking a lot of it. Still, as feelings & fears are, they aren't rational. Being the observating reader, it's easy to say: go, get Ollie, Declan.

Through the whole book, which only two chapter as exception, it's from Declan's POV, still with the two Ollie chapters we get the necessary insight from him, and let's say without saying a huge spoiler: Declan isn't alone with his feelings. This limited insight, the focus nearly on character makes the story more thrilling, ignites the curiosity in the reader's mind and of course: we feel with Declan.

I loved how also the aspect with the costumes was included, that Declan can't get his Batman out of his had. For a long time there isn't clear who the mysterious Batman is, it's good delivered and yes, although you see Declan "cheating" on Ollie (at least on the emotional basis if you wanna say it so), it's not, and it's totally understandable, why he is attracted to the mysterious guy. The fact they both have smokey hot sex makes the scene even hotter. :3
The whole anonymous meeting in the book gave the book its little thrill, although the reader has soon a assumption and gets enough clues, who's behind the Batman mask. ;)

The chemistry between Declan and Ollie was there, I wasn't suprised how the events were revealed and it was hot when they came together. Due to their family and being stepbrothers they of course know pretty much about each other but on the other hand they have to get to know each other again after all the years, and Ollie's vacation and Declan not around at the family's home for a long time makes it even more prominent and necessary. Both are adults, the childish shenanigans they made when they were younger aren't valid anymore. But soon they reconnect and have a lot in common and have mutual tastes. It's pleasant to see the guys interacting and harmonizing also on a daily level, and even when the chemistry is there, they don't "attack" each other or lust over every second they share a room. It has a natural flow for me which I really liked.

A solid, nice read with a bit bumpy parts, because I had the feeling some parts it went a bit faster than I like and had the feeling I missed something. I also liked how the parent's reaction was but maybe a few parts there were a bit too hasty which was why I was confused. I also have to mention the reference to daily politics and current events (the US elections & their results were mentioned, as well was a reference to the the Orlando night club shooting).

All in all a great, entertaining read, hot, sexy, with reasonable characters who acted mature and not annoying or anything. It was only natural how both guys came together and the end is sweet and adorable. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. :)

Love of family, or love for another

A very sweet story of a family coming together because of Christmas, and growing closer as they finally get to learn more about each other.

Declan and Ollie are step-brothers, but it's something that happened later in life for them. Growing up as only children of single parents they fought viciously when they were forced together as a family. As Declan began to realize he also has feelings for his new brother he ran, getting a job far away from family and trying to move on with his life. Now coming home for Christmas after some major changes in his life, he meets a man at a bar that makes him think he could have something with someone other than Ollie. But a hookup doesn't leave chances for more, and as Declan again spends time with Ollie old feelings come roaring back. The more time the spend together, the more it looks like Ollie might have some of those feelings too.

I loved how this story dealt with the whole family. Declan has more concerns than just being in love with his step brother. He has never come out of the closet, and is positive it would ruin his family. Declan is afraid it would be heartbreaking for his mother, while he is positive his step-father would throw him out of the family. Family is important to him, so Declan chooses keeping familial love over coming out, or ever pursuing Ollie. Declan is also an honourable character, for as long as he remains in the closet he won't pursue a romantic relationship, as he would never hide someone he loves from his family. Declan spends the story grappling with his feelings while worrying about his family.

This was an excellent story and well worth the read!

A lovely holiday story, beautifully written with great characters, some anxious moments and lots of feelings.
What do you do when you fall in love with your best friend, who is also your stepbrother? What will your family say? They don’t even know you’re gay. These are the emotions Declan and Ollie are struggling with, and they can’t even talk to each other about it as they are ignorant of each other’s feelings.
The opening scene is very sexy, and I was afraid that it would end up in more about sex than anything else, but I couldn’t be further from the truth. Ann Grech captured the characters really well. Although the story is told mostly from Declan’s point of view, you get a good understanding of both characters. They are lovely and very relatable. I felt for Declan. The way he is struggling with his mixed feelings for both Batman and Ollie must be so confusing.
They have to go through some troubling times to find each other. I hope that this author doesn’t have experienced the accident because it was so detailed. My heart stopped, and shivers crawled along my back. She kept the hurts to a minimum to avoid too much drama.
All in all, a great holiday story.

Ok so this started well with the mysterious encounter in the club. I admit it didn’t go like I imagined at all after that!

Some +:
- no homophobia despite being sure there will be drama with the rich parents
- the club scene
- one of the MC lives in SFO which is rare

Some -:
- it needs a trigger warning! There’s a big (non fatal) car accident scene that’s quite long (for a book that short) and detailed and I’m sure it could trigger some readers. There’s also mentions to Pulse and attacks in clubs which kind of killed the mood. I personally don’t like having real life horrible moments in a cosy romance.

- some things don’t make sense: how do they manage to kiss with their Batman/Deadpool masks on?? And how do they manage to have s** the day after the terrible accident where 1 MC end up with a broken arm and the other had concussions/ terrible headache, pain all over his body…
- the s** scenes in the staircases was just weird. Why? It was risky (and impractical since they were both hurt) where their bedrooms were so close…
- I admit I was a bit disappointed by the big reveal scene, I thought it would have been different

Started well

I loved how this book started - it was hot and sexy and was really well written. I also love the trope of stepbrothers falling in love. So the first half of this book ticked all my boxes. Then for me the story took an unbelievable turn and I fell out of love with it... Spoiler alert for the next paragraph.

I felt that Declan and Ollie’s relationship was developing beautifully and didn’t “need” the accident to bring them together. Plus Declan took the brunt of the impact by the truck to save Ollie, but then the next day he’s carrying him up the stairs - the poor guy would have been black and blue all over, so that felt really off to me. I guess the accident threw me personally and I never got back on track with the book. That being said I usually love Ann Grech’s books so I will definitely read more by her in the future and I recommend you read this book and make your own mind up about it

I really loved this really quick and spicy christmas novella. It swept me away and before I knew where I was it was dark out and my tea was cold but I was smiling huge. The subject can be hard for people to read but I don't see that with step siblings, especially that never grew up together until they were old teenagers being a problem at all.

This book really dealt beautifully with two subjects that have the possibility to tear a family to pieces. But when the story builds and Declan and Ollie begin to reconnect it's great to read. Both hiding things from each other and running from there problems. Talk people, just talk.

I really recommend this beautiful book. It's one that isn't pretty all the way through but as I said earlier you just smile huge.

What a beautiful loving story about two people struggles to not only identify themselves but also their love for each other!

I read Always Him in a matter of hours. I was pulled into Declan’s story from page one and felt his struggles from the beginning nng. I truly feel like I can’t go into detail about the book because it would give everything away. You really need to read it for yourself to experience it firsthand.

Declan’s and Ollie’s journey to truly finding themselves is beautiful. There are also some hot and sexy M/M scenes that will leave you breathless - so reader beware. Ann Grech does an amazing job pulling you in and leaving you not wanting for anything. This was my first time reading any of Ann Grech’s books and definitely will not be my last.

'Always Him' was a beautiful love story, I really enjoyed this short read. This taboo novella have me from the first chapter, I couldn't put it down, some parts were a little predictable but I didn't mind as I loved the story.

Declan and Ollie are stepbrothers home for the Christmas break. Declan doesn't know Ollie is in town initially, he probably wouldn't be there if he knew, he's been avoiding Ollie for years. He sees Ollie constantly in his dreams which is more than he can take. A passionate hookup with a strangely familiar Batman and then the arrival of Ollie has Declan confused and sad, but maybe not for long.

I adored Always Him, I couldn't put it down and devoured it in one sitting. Declan and Ollie' s chemistry is like a moth to a flame, it is like fireworks on new years eve. It is something that had to happen, it is "taboo" because of their parents marriage but it is so beautiful just like fireworks when it happens. Ann has a way with words that ignites both the characters and the emotions. The plot is raw, it is beautiful as it shows the struggles both Ollie and Declan face living in the closet while secretly loving each other, but as we know. The best things aren't in the closet. I'd give this book more than 5 stars if I could.

Wow what a beautiful love story, it was charming, funny and a whole lot of sexy wrapped up in a cool Christmas theme! Two step brothers; Dex and Ollie one in the closet for fear of rejection the other seemingly the straight jock.... home for Christmas neither can deny the connection they have; although neither willing to admit or act on it for fear of humiliation. They are thrown together after an accident nearly kills them both, while recouping they both finally give in to temptation and this is where the fun and sexy begins. Thank you Ann for giving us another wonderfully stunning insight into your beautiful mind. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

Ahh! I love every book by this author. Her stories are awaits amazing! They always suck me in until the end and then I want more. Declan and Ollie’s story wasn’t any different.

What if you were in love with someone but couldn’t have them? What if you were scared to be who you really are? And what if one night changed your life?

Declan and Oille have been in each other’s lives for a while. But for sometime they have been pulling away from each other. But one night out changes things. Only if Declan can ever find his Batman.

Such a sweet, beautiful holiday story. I really want more from these guys. Can’t wait to see what’s next from this author.

A wonderfully enjoyable Christmas romance. Two men who are related by marriage are attracted to
each other, even after several years apart and this Christmas may just be the chance they need.
Starting off with a hot scene in a club is a great introduction to the connection these men share and Ann has done a great job in writing their attraction and feelings throughout the book. I really enjoyed the way the two men were with each other as well as with their parents, people both were worried about. Though this is a shorter story, I still felt like it had the chance to play out naturally and really liked reading throughout the whole book.

A beautifully written story about when Declan falls for his step father's son Oliver.
Ollie Always seemed to be there when Declan was near. Often fighting just like brothers do.
Fighting his developing feelings for his stepbrother Dec was happy to escape to college. Times passes things change feelings often don't.
He had been dodging the family Christmas annual party whenever he could.
This year he knew he couldn't not face the truth.
How was Dec going to handle seeing Ollie again, will his old feelings resurface will Ollie have a loved one there.
I enjoyed reading the chemistry shift between them as their journey unfolds.
