Shuzo Oshimi (押見修造, Oshimi Shūzō) is a Japanese manga creator. Drawn in a realistic art style, his comics tend to be psychological dramas exploring the difficulties in human relationships and often touching on disturbing situations and perversions. Oshimi debuted in 2001 with the manga series Avant-Garde Yumeko, appeared in Kodansha's 'Monthly Shōnen Magazine.' Most of his works since then have been published by Kodansha and Futabasha. Among his first successes the single volume manga Sweet Poolside (2004), later adapted into a live-action film, and the series Drifting Net Café (2008–2011), also adapted for TV. Oshimi reached international acclaims with The Flowers of Evil (2009–2014) and Inside Mari (2012–2016), both adapted into successful anime. Other notable works are Blood on the Tracks (2017–2023) and Welcome Back, Alice (2020-2023) .
This is volume 7 from Oshimi of a bullying story that becomes a vampire story that becomes a deep reflection on youth trauma and now a vampire cult story. The focus shifts from different characters, but has recently been on Yukiko Gosho, ten years in the future from the original teen events, as she tries to figure out what happened to her friends, Okazaki and Nora, and make some sense of what happened to her, too.
Gosho finds the mysterious Sakurane, now sort of a religious leader of this vampire-worshiping nihilist blood cult, (ugh, I say). It gets violent in this volume, and for the moment seems a little out of control, heading into a (for me) less interesting horror direction. I liked it better when the series turned sort of reflective about the past, beginning to deal with the disturbing past events that Gosho went through, instead of this full-on blood cult thing. My ratings shift as the series wildly shifts. Volume 6 was a hopeful 4 stars; volume 7 feels like 2.5 stars to me, but I do like how lean it gets in its storytelling, with many wordless pages, so I round up for some of the art.
Ehhh ... honestly feel like this should've ended a few volumes ago. The story is just not really interesting anymore and it feels like we're just going around in circles.
Well that got darker very quickly 😱 Volume 7 also ended on a very tense moment/cliffhanger! I’m excited now the series has gotten into more horror territory but Gosho is my favourite character at this point so that wasn’t pleasant at times 😩🥺 but of course the dark, horror, elements appeal to me. More vampire goodness, please! This felt like a set up for the last 3 volumes! Excited to see how the rest of it goes and how Happiness finishes. Shuzo Oshimi’s art style is honestly gorgeous and I will check out Flowers Of Evil and Blood On The Tracks in the future - I own a physical copy of the first volume of the latter!
IDK why I seem to have forgotten to review this but...
This series is so strange and I'm not really sure where the next volume is gonna take it. I definitely wanna read more of Shuzo Oshimi's work whilst I wait for volume 8.
Guru, I abhor sukarane with all of my heart. What kind of cult has he built, really? Gosho, I warned you that it was a trap. Please survive and return. Even though we discovered Yuki to be alive and well, Okazaki's whereabouts remain a mystery.
Enter the cult, enter the subjugates, enter the euphoric façade of failed utopia
Gosho Yukiko finally met Yuuki. Much to her disappointment in getting clues about Okazaki's whereabouts, Yuuki's seems detached from the world and living in a somewhat veggie state. Sakurane used him as create an embodiment of his said "god" and established a cult "Blood of Happiness" where subjugates or fanatics live. Getting in touch with Gosho after a decade, he proceeds with his plan.
I swear this is so readable, that I can't even believe myself. The story, the panel, and the dialogue just flow like blood after a stabbing incident.
bruuuuuuuuh wtf This volume is definitely not for the faint of heart. It's suuuuper gory and in some parts pretty disturbing.
I really like the path the plot is taking, in this series there's really a mix of everything. Now we follow the effed up cult phase and these people y'all are absolutely off their minds.
Well, after last volume's sweet interlude, tension and violence return with a vengeance as Yukiko Gosho sets off to find her vampire friends in the remote mountain compound of a strange cult. That can only go badly, right?
disturbing. the name of this manga is happiness??? happiness for whom, may i ask, if only shit happens? a fucking cult? where yuuki is god and my girl ghoto is being tortured ????stfu it’s pure agony
Okay so Yukito just couldn't leave it alone could she? When she finds out that Sukurane is alive and is living in a religious cult commune and refuses to speak to the public, she calls of sick to work and goes to investigate for herself after seeing the sites of her childhood trauma with her love interest Sudo. She takes time off work and vanishes. This cult believe in drinking blood to become like the God they have in the basement, and Yukito is sure that it is Yuki and Makato. Of course Sukurane has alternative motives in this book.
The reason this one has gone down again in rating is because well...It was a little boring. Sure I love cults as much as the next person but it seems to be veering away from horror into just straight up gore which I'm less of a fan of. It's even more horrifying when you consider it's the humans doing the gorish things and not the vampires. I just got the ick a little from this volume if I'm honest, but I'm so close to the end I will continue reading.
I’m still pretty hooked just to see the outcome. It’s not looking too good for anyone at this point. Thrilling and very dark. Without saying too much, this is the most interesting read since volume 5.
As dramatic as the plot has become, I feel like it has strayed way too far from the main vampire storyline. The 7th volume in and we're now in the world of cult leaders and worse yet, we still have no idea where Makoto and Nora are.
I am a little disappointed because going into the start of the series, I was hoping for more of the traditional vampire story (which it gave a little of in the beginning) but now it's just chapters upon chapters of characters that have little to no relevance to the remaining plot. Not to mention, characters like Sakurane have no center of purpose. How did an arbitrary character like him, manage to cover over three chapters of the storyline consequently??? While Sakurane is entertaining enough--I'm am so NOT feeling the torture porn. He, and not to mention, Gosho, as much as I like her, has no business being the main characters of so many chapters now.
I will finish the series, mostly on basis of principle but I am so let down by the fact that this doesn't feel like a true vampire story. Unless, the author, is trying to use vampirism as a dramatic metaphor or something---still it is has morphed into nothing like what I signed up to read.

We went from recovering from PTSD to a volume all about torturing and finding out the truth.
This is some sick twisted shit. Yukiko can't catch a break as she makes her way to this cult like family following their leader who slit her throat just a few years ago. When she confronts him he plays it off as a nice dude who has turned over a new leaf. But in reality we all know better. Without spoilers, the following events range from me getting pissed off to feel disturbed I'm viewing this. WHY CAN'T Yukiko BE HAPPY!
Overall, this series tends to play with my emotions. And while the last volume was a great look into the mind of someone, this goes more back to the root of this story...happiness isn't given to people. And in comes plenty of torture and fucked up moments. How will it all end?
Okay, so this is still a vast departure from the start of the series, but this volume is very good. It is also very dark. Gosho finds what she was looking for... sort of. She is in the heart of a serial killer’s cult, the Blood of Happiness, and it appears she has learned nothing in her ten years since her last encounter with the treacherous Sakurane. Oshimi tells this story with a very efficient and minimal use of dialogue. The panel transitions, shadows, movement all adroitly convey the mood and story. It makes for an easy and enjoyable, however gruesome, reread. It is one of my favorites of the series so far yet so unlike what has come before.
With Flowers of Evil and now Happiness, Oshimi seems preoccupied with adults confronting the people whose behavior traumatized them in their more formative years, and now that Gosho is the main character, she is the one left behind to try to resolve the decade-old problems of her youth. I found this volume a compelling look at (oc)cult mentality, but some readers may be turned away by the horrid violence committed in the name of getting closer to a god. I'm looking forward to seeing where Oshimi takes this story next.
And our little reprieve from the terror didn’t last long lol, if the series keeps this up it may become one of my favourites. Trying very hard not to just binge the rest of the volumes!
