Illiteracy is not something I think about all too often-- I learned to read at age 3 (self taught whaddup) and never looked back. Cochran's life and this book have reminded me that this issue is vital and can change the course of someone's life. Through his own experience and the experiences of a few others, Cochran reminds his readers that reading is a right, that literacy is important, and that the act of reading is not as intuitive as we have been told. He does make a lot of big claims at the beginning and doesn't really explain them as much as I would've liked, and it also feels like he's talking in circles a little bit. Overall, this is a fairly quick and vital read. Illiteracy is an epidemic, y'all.
