With an unconventional mother and a brother who is a juvenile delinquent, 16-year-old Martha is already an outsider in Katydid, Illinois, even before she is arrested on a morals charge and sent to a foster home. (Nancy Pearl)
Really a 3.5. The book drags a lot — definitely reads like the first novel that it is — but suddenly the last couple of chapters, especially the last, are superb.
