The Venerable Bede

Rate this book
From his remote Northumbrian monastery, Bede (673-735) exerted an enormous and enduring influence on the study of Scripture, history, mathematics, and Latin literature. This overview of his life and writings, first published in 1990, has now been revised in the light of the most recent scholarship. In it noted scholar Sister Benedicta Ward introduces Bede and analyzes his works and the traditions and events which gave form to his thought.

A very thorough and interesting assessment of the life and works of St Bede the Venerable, particularly concerning his influence on the rest of Europe and European history in general. He was a lot more influential than most folks realize - if you've written a date as A.D. anytime, you are referring back to St Bede, who was the person who set that whole system up, back in the 700s AD (see what I did there?). A good read.
