Jimmy Mayes grew into adulthood in the midst of hostile prejudice and abject poverty. The son of Alabama sharecroppers, he vows to spare his own son from the heartache and want that he had to endure. Jimmy’s deep commitment to create a better life launches the narrative of one family spanning three generations. Their pursuit of something better unfolds within historical settings, moving from America’s Deep South during the Great Depression to an Illinois mining town during Second World War, ending with a rapidly growing city in Arizona during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. This is the inspiring story of devoted family and life-long friends facing life’s deepest struggles with vision, faith and abiding love.
Ed Varnum lives with his wife, Jan, in Pierpont, a small village nestled in the middle of Rock Bridge State Park, south of Columbia, Missouri. Varnum has found this home, surrounded with trees and blessed with frequent visits by deer, raccoons, rabbits and far too many squirrels, the perfect haven of inspiration for his music compositions and creative writing. Ed and Jan have four children, three grandchildren. They share their home with a lively black and tan Morkie named Macy, who does her best to keep the squirrel population on its toes.
