Japanese mythology meets urban fantasy in this brand new series by Jasmine Walt!
When an ancient spirit awakens a hidden ability within Aika, grateful is the last word that comes to her mind. Being able to summon monsters and spirits to do your bidding might sound cool in comic books, but in real life it brings nothing but trouble. And between chasing after a medical degree, caring for her ailing mother, and running the family business, she's got plenty to deal with.
Unfortunately, Aika doesn't have the luxury of ignoring her new abilities. An ancient, powerful evil has taken her mother hostage, and with cancer eating away at her life, the clock is ticking until Aika loses her forever.
Luckily, a hunky—if occasionally infuriating—shaman has taken an interest in Aika, and is willing to show her the ropes and fight by her side. But the more time Aika spends with Raiden, the more she realizes that he might not be what he seems. The truth is just out of reach, and once Aika uncovers it, she'll either find the key to saving their world... ...or destroy the best thing she's ever had.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure to read the author's note in the front of the book before diving into the book. There is important information there that will improve your reading experience.
This was one of those impulse buys. I saw that cover, read that it had Japanese mythology and it was only 99cents, so I bought it. And not much later I started reading it. Ghosts and Grudges sure lives up to it's title, it's filled with ghosts and spirits. There's a lot of Japanese mythology thrown in and the main characters are all Japanese as well.
The book starts quite quickly, we get introduced to the main character and then what seemed like a normal day turns into anything but that when she suddenly gains the sights and sees ghosts and jokai. The whole book is pretty fast paced and the events occur over the span of just a few days, but that makes sense given what's going on.
I really enjoyed this book! I quickly got pulled into the story, although around halfway through there was a part I liked a bit less. There were some events that didn't quite make sense to me and I felt like it went a little bit overboard with the fantastical elements there. It also turned out to be much more of a big scale plot than I initially thought. I wasn't quite sure what I thought of the Kai plot line and something that gets revealed later in the book, but I am curious to see where it goes. The end has a nice twist that makes me curious about the next book.
I liked Aika as a main character, she wanted to help save her mother and jumps right into things to help her. It was nice that she got to use her new skills immediately, but I did think she learned everything a bit quickly, but something later in the book does make that more believable. I also liked how she seemed very reasonable and realistic. She might get jealous, but then later also understood why he acted that way or she felt overwhelmed and then was able to put things into perspective and know she wasn't doing this for herself, but for others. She might get angry, but when people explained, she cooled down. I liked that.
There's a bit of romance in this book as well. Although it's mostly a side plot line, there was enough of it to get a feel for the romance. Although I wouldn't have minded a bit more, but I hope we get more romance in book 2. We get to know two love interests and get some scenes with each of them. I did feel the romance. Although at first I mostly liked Raiden, but then later we get to know Shota a bit better and I changed my mind about him and liked him as well. And then Raiken has a bit of a temper later on, which I didn't care much for. But it did all feel believable. Both guys seemed like a good match for Aika and I am looking forward to see the romance develop. I also liked how Aika was a bit confused at her feelings for both boys, especially as it's been a while since she had a crush and now she crushes hard on two guys.
The world building was done really well. Basically is this a world in which all the Japanese mythology is real. There are kami, spirits and jokai. I also liked how the shamans could interact with the spirits and merge with them. And it was fun to get to know a bit more about Japanese mythology and some mythological creatures throughout the book.
To summarize: I really enjoyed this book! It's filled with Japanese mythology, action and a good story. I liked Aika as a main character and we also get to know some side characters and two love interests in this book. The start of the book was really good, there was a part halfway through I cared for a bit less and I am not yet sure what to think of the Kai plot line. The ending has me curious for book 2. Overall I had fun reading this book and am curious how the story continues. I liked learning more about Japanese mythology and it really felt like the authors had done their research and knew what they were talking about. The world building was interesting and I liked reading about all the Japanese mythological creatures. If you're looking for an action filled book with lots of Japanese mythology I would recommend you give this book a chance!
A book that earns higher marks for breaking molds. While this is an Urban fantasy, which is a popular genre for writers at the time, it is unique in the fantasy model is Japanese mythos instead of a Western One. Even then it still isn't done breaking the mold. Although that is as much a part of the plot as anything the authors do kind of let it slip when they call the book a reverse Harem Urban Fantasy. A bit of a breath of fresh air. Will be interesting to see what the sequel is like.
This was a very different story set in present day that has all types of Asian mysticism, culture, language and history. I do like how Asian culture is infused into the story. But that is not something I'm at all familiar with and quite possibly why I felt it wasn't for me. Sometimes I was confused about what words meant and couldn't go back to look it up easily (I read the advance readers copy.) That being said, I'm still a J. Walt fangirl!!
Such a fantastic book! I'm so glad I went with my instincts and decided to get this on Kindle Unlimited. I admit when I first saw this book I was hooked in with the reverse harem aspect as well as the Japanese mythology theme.
Aika was such an awesome female lead in this story and I liked her straight away. I really admired her strong personality and the way she cared for her dying mother makes her a winner in my eyes. Her day at work was ever so strange and when she was seeing those monster like things I didn't blame her for thinking she'd gone crazy. If I saw spirits and bizarre creatures I wouldn't know what to do either. The world building is absolutely wonderful from start to finish and I was so engrossed in learning about the various yokai she encountered. I've been a fan of anything relating to Japan for a long time, so I wasn't familiar with the yokai before. I think I may have to learn more about Japanese myth as they sound rather fascinating.
The shaman aspect is quite interesting too and they seem badass. I like how Aika comes to term with her being a shaman and she has people help her realise her powers and abilities, especially Raiden and Shota. Raiden soon become my favourite because he was the first shaman she met (and their meeting was unforgettable as she encountered a terrifying yokai for the first time) and he was the one who tried to help her make sense of the world that was thrust upon her. At times Raiden can be serious, but he proves to be such a good teacher to Aika. To be honest I didn't expect Shota to be a shaman as at the start of the story he was introduced as a chef for another restaurant. Shota grew on me and I really love how playful and laid back he was. A few times I did find myself chuckling at some of the things he said or done.
The whole adventure of the trio rescuing Aika's mother was very enjoyable. They rode a massive turtle's back underwater, met the Dragon King who sent them on a mission in order to help his wife and managed to outwit the Monkey King with the help of crabs. It did have a manga/anime feel to it and that's probably why I loved it so much seeing that I'm a massive fan of anime and manga. The Dragon King has got to be my favourite yokai because you wouldn't expect a dragon to be a businessman and arguing over the phone with other people. He's such a great character and I can tell he was overjoyed and appreciative when they managed to bring back a monkey's liver to heal his dying wife. The Dragon King plays a significant role as he's the one who tells the trio about Kai and the history/doom of the shaman clans two thousand years ago.
To be honest towards the end of the book I thought that Kai was a relative of Aika as I thought it would be a good reason why he kidnapped Aika's mum in the first place. Let's just say I didn't expect the outcome at all. The reincarnation idea is intriguing and it offered a new twist, one I didn't see coming at all. The action scenes were jam packed and they were written to a high standard. I was a little sad at the end when Aika's mum died, but it turns out that Aika's dad is still out there. I do hope we learn a bit more about Aika's family and why he disappeared all those years ago.
As it's a reverse harem I thought the romance was done well, but it could have been more developed in a few ways. Aika finds herself torn in between both men and at times she is overwhelmed by this, which is a given. At first I thought Raiden would be ideal for her but when Aika spent time with Shota and then things started to heat up I found myself liking Shota too. I'm just like Aika because I'm too confused - both of them seem very perfect for Aika.
I just can't wait for the second book to come out as I want to see how things progress between the three characters.
*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from the author*
Well this was interesting. First, I love that there was so much Japanese lure! Yay! It was great seeing things in a book I got to actually enjoy, and overall, it was fun to see a different set of nationalities take the stage. Like yes, they're all American, but still XD It was fun seeing Aika them return to their homeland Japan for a battle some weren't nearly prepared for.
I've read a few of Walt's books to know by now the way she writes, and I enjoy her style a lot. I've never read the other author, however, but I'd say this book makes me think twice about the kind of books she dishes out, making me wonder just where the line was drawn with the two authors' creativity. It was a fun start to a new series, and at first I was a little antsy about them getting to Kai until I realized I had to look at this like an adventure novel, a book full of strange stops for Aika to go through and complete before getting to the finale. It was generally predictable, and Aika had a few quirks I had to get used to, but in the end, I was overall entertained, liking some things more than others.
I absolutely loved this book. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because it was difficult to remember all the Japanese words and names. The author does a great job of giving a detailed glossary at the beginning of the book, however reading it on my kindle I am too lazy to flip back and forth. She does a wonderful job of putting enough descriptions around the phrases that you can eventually figure out what the words mean. When it comes to the characters and story it’s a 5. I love how independent the main character is and how strong she takes everything in stride. I’m not one for any type of Harlem or romance but I found my self wanting the main character to enjoy one of her suitors (with out giving spoilers here) which surprised me! I am looking forward to the next book and I think once I’m more accustomed to this world I won’t have problems with the words. It shows that we need more diversity in characters and stories and I love that Jasmine is making this happen!
I got this as a e book as a ARC from the author in exchange for a honest review. I enjoyed reading it. It had a good story to it. I like the authors style of writing. I hope to read more books by this author.
I can't believing I'm saying this, but honestly I think this is the best of all Jasmine Walt's books I've read and I've read them all! I love the Japanese theme and the characters are wonderful. I shed a few tears in this one, but won't give anything away. So ready for book 2 in this series. I think I liked this best, because the sexual tension is there minus the consummation. Didn't have to skip any pages in this book!! 😂
Honestly the cover is what sold it for me. I didn't even read the summary I just dove in and I was rather surprised and I can't wait to see where it goes.
We are big fans of Anime and Manga at my house so this book was a treat for me. There is a lot of folklore and legends sprinkled throughout the story, and the way the shamans are able to use the spirits is really interesting. There is no explicit adult content in this story, but I would guess this is building the world and story line for the rest of the series. There is some nudity, and violence. I would say older teen and up would be good. There is a lot of culture references and Japanese words but there is a glossary at the beginning to look things up. In all I think it's a good beginning to a series that has a lot of potential. I like my characters to know each other before jumping into bed, so I really enjoyed the whole book.
I like books that have different mythologies than usual, and this one definitely fits the bill. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind reading the same-old, same-old, but it’s nice once in a while to read something different. In this one, the author uses Japanese mythology to create a wonderful reading experience filled with great characters and a fascinating plot. Aika helps her mother, who has cancer, run her restaurant. One day, an unusual customer comes in, and she starts seeing fantastical things. Not long after, her mother is kidnapped, and she finds out she is from a shaman family. I am eagerly waiting for the next book, and I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series with Aika and Raiden especially after the revelations at the end. I highly recommend this book to urban fantasy readers! I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.
As an interesting story, rich in Japanese culture and folklore and myth , this is good . As a romance ? Not soo much!
As an interesting story, rich in Japanese culture and folklore and myth , this is good . As a romance ? Not soo much! We follow Aika as she runs thru almost a cliff notes version at times on what it means to be a shaman in (her) Japanese culture, and in this sense I found the book very interesting and could and can see myself learning quite a bit from it .... This story has a lot of exciting adventures and like a crash coarse in Japanese myths and legends and some times just every day things for all of us culturally unaware... and in that sense I could have had a great time ... But .... But I was reading this supposedly, As. A . Romance!!! Which this honestly is almost completely lacking in...... Aika is rather smart and kind, who is a resourceful quick study of things and rather plucky at times, but she also feels rather green and virginal, while she feels lust quite often and we're always reading of how attractive the guys are and those usual "belly flips", sighs all women seem to get when around a man that excites her , not much happens here.. Raiden doesn't seem to know what he feels other than protective and sometimes possessive towards her, while Shoto thinking Aika is all Raiden's pushes her away about the whole story, even gets the nerve to kiss him once ... Shoto gives in for a moment and then goes back to keeping his distance ... Sighs, I'm ok w/a "slow burn" per say , but honestly there was only the barest of anything between these 3 , which was incredibly annoying when . This . Is . Supposed. To . Be . A . Romance !!!!! And a RH one at that ! Give me a great story ! Give me action and adventure! Teach me something new about a culture that is as foreign to me is the country is... But Don't ! Don't ! Label it a romance when there is barely dash of it in there to even begin to call it one .... kids attracted to each other in junior high would probably do a better job of showing that they are interested than these 3 did over all... maybe ,just maybe I'd we'd been allowed to know what the guys were thinking and NOT just Aika it would have been better,we could have known what they were feeling and why they were holding back but as it was this felt all action, all adventure, all quest to save the world and Mom and little else in my opinion .... I was excited to read this because I've been enjoying Ms.Walt's the Dragons gift , series and while it's not perfect it is good and fun and definitely a romance , and we aren't just stuck in the h's pov the whole time we get to know what her men are thinking and it feels more well rounded and mature... This for me felt too YA, and the characters too green, where sex and romance are a nice idea/concept but are supposed to stay that an idea.... and that just doesn't feel right if your doing a romance esoteric a RH one at that ... I'm keeping this only foe the things I can learn, not because I enjoyed myself ... 3 stars for the hard work and effort, 2 stars for lack of romance and entertainment.... Come for the action and adventure and the look into Japanese culture, leave if you want anything else.... But that's just my opinion ...
A fast-paced action book full of Japanese folklore! A must read for urban fantasy lovers!
If you’re looking for a faced-paced book full of folklore, this is for you! This book kept me interested the entire time and I couldn’t wait to read what came next. What’s refreshing about this book is it’s not the typical folklore you find in most books today (thank you for this Jasmine and J. A.). While having some knowledge of Japanese folklore, I found myself using the built-in dictionary on my Kindle often. I’d recommend installing one if you have that capability and are not familiar with Japanese folklore. It will be difficult to write a review without some spoilers, you’ve been warned... ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ~~~
Aika Fujiwara (or Fujiwara Aika for proper form) is a medical student who has taken to running her mother’s restaurant as her mother is ill. While at work one evening, she learns she is a rare kind of shaman (one that hasn’t been seen in centuries) and all the stories told to her as a young child are indeed true. Enter Raiden and Shota, cousins who are from the Takaoka Shaman Clan. This is where the adventures begin. Kai, an ancient shaman tied together with an evil spirit, has kidnapped Aika’s mother. While making their way to rescue her, Aika, Raiden, and Shota meet unique creatures (The Sea Dragon King, mermaids, talking crabs) while battling others (The Monkey King). During this time, Aika learns more about her powers and how the shaman world works. There are plenty more adventures and creatures, but trying to keep spoilers to a minimum. I look forward to the next book in the series to see what Aika’s future holds and how the background characters roles play out.
*Note that Jasmine has made it clear this is a reverse harem series. While there is no sex and minimal adult themes in this book, she said there will be going forward.*
I received an ARC in exchange for my review, however, please note I also purchased the book. This is my favorite book by Jasmine so far!

A superb beginning to what promises to be a great and entertaining series! I have always loved Japanese onmyouji (or Japanese spirit shamans), so I was thrilled when I got to read a book written by two wonderful authors in this setting.
The story: We meet Aika, a normal Japanese girl taking care of her ill mother while tending to the family restaurant and following med school. What promises to be a normal day suddenly changes when she has an encounter with a spirit in her restaurant. She starts 'seeing things', glimpses of other creatures. Of course that's when she meets Raiden, with whom she feels an instant connection (needless to say he's a first class hunk ;-)), while he is trying to bind a yokai... yeah that did not go well. When Aika's mother gets abducted by a dark force that's after Aika, the clock starts ticking for her to come to terms with her new reality, her growing powers / abilities and the 2 gorgeous guys she feels drawn too.
My take on the book: I started reading it on the train to work and I was very very tempted to just stay seated and keep on reading, it was damn hard to put down! There is a glossary at the start of the book and I noticed I needed to go back a few times when there were names of beings I couldn't remember, but all in all it wasn't that troublesome. As the reader you get a fairly good idea where everything is going with the story. Aika being drawn to both Raiden and Shota but not willing to do anything about it (cause... who feels so strongly for more than one person right?) made me facepalm pretty often (in a good way, I promise!). All in all very well written, characters that you can relate to. You get really drawn into the story, a roller-coaster of emotions, some fun, some drama, it has it all.
I'm very much looking forward to the next part!!! (please please please don't make us wait too long *puppy eyes*)
I loved this book! It gave me a real sense of the Studio Ghibli films whilst reading it and could visually see all the scenes before me. I felt like my mind was bursting with splashes of colour whilst reading Ghosts & Grudges and that, plus the story got me really excited in the book. It was fun, it was interesting (I love to learn new things whilst reading) and it was entertaining, the perfect mix in a book. I was easily drawn into this book from the first few pages and found it really hard to put down.
Ghosts & Grudges is a slow burn RH romance. I love a good slow burn romance (particularly reverse harem at the moment) as I love all the tension and the build up to the relationship/s. This book has got all the good parts that a slow burn needs and instead of focusing on the characters relationships it's focusing more on the story. I really liked the story and thought it was different and original. The cast of characters was great and the world building was awesome, I mean Monkey Island and the under sea world were really well created. I liked the characters too and I love that we're not quite sure on the baddie.
Overall it's a really good book which I really enjoyed. I love when a story gets me excited whilst reading it that I get the flutters in my belly, that's exactly the feeling Ghosts & Grudges gave me. This really is a book which I think needs to be read, particularly if you're a fan of the Studio Ghibli movies as I think you'll love this book. I'm really looking forward to reading the next one in this series now, and I'm actually hoping it will be longer than a three book series too.
Ghosts and Grudges by Jasmine Walt and J.A. Cipriano is book one in the Shaman Queen’s Harem. This book is a reverse harem urban fantasy novel that features Japanese-American characters and a wonderful blending of Japanese mythology. In this book we are introduced to Aika. Aika is a young woman who is doing her best to take care of her ailing mother, and run the restaurant that her mother was running at one time. It starts off as a normal day but little does Aika know that it will not end that way. Aika has split her life into two times – before her mother’s cancer and after her mother’s cancer. Before the cancer, Aika had dreams of going to medical school and helping people, after her mother’s cancer her focus is on her mother and keeping the restaurant running. Aika has a bit of a restauranteur rival who decides to make an appearance, Shota, who is trying to get Aika to sell her restaurant to him. It’s a tempting picture that he paints, but she refuses. Not long after he leaves, Aika spots a man she believes is a customer who has not been served. What she doesn’t know is that of the human customers there, she’s the only one who can see him. His happiness at seeing her and knowing that she can see him is palpable. He tells her she’s the one, leaves behind a sketch pad and pencil, and then leaves. Aika’s life immediately changes after this incident and her world is turned upside down. Sparks of romance will begin to flare, danger will be everywhere, and an ancient evil will be looking to become free once more.
I’m haven’t been much of a fantasy reader until recently. I enjoy the fantasy aspect but I find it hard to find fantasy books that aren’t considered YA and are about teenagers running around being badasses, or about younger adults in their early 20’s being completely immature. So anyways I’ve been searching and searching and ran across some of these reverse harem style fantasy books that have been hitting the spot for me (well some of them, once you sift through about a million of them).Although some, including this book, have younger adults that have a maturity to it that I enjoy.
Anywho about the book... this one was inserting as revolves around Japanese Lore, which is not something I’ve read a lot about. To be honest at some points I thought to myself “this must be what it’s like to play Pokémon”... although I don’t know if Pokémon revolves around Japanese mythology..... but still there was the Fox thing with 9 tails that plays with fire... that’s a Pokémon right??
Anyways..... lol was also a clean romance, although I doubt the entire series will be. Either way I am pretty hooked on some of this authors work, her dragons gift series was killer and I am just patiently waiting for the final one to be released.
So happy with this collaboration. This was a really good book. I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. This book kept my interest from beginning to end. I loved that this was a bit different and focused on Japanese lore and myths. The story brought them to life. Great description and details without going over the top. While i do think Aika was a bit yoo trusting w Raiden at first, i love that the story doesn't just jump into romance right away. While this is a reverse harem you still get a great story. Aika isn't whimpy, doesn't play helpless and is a fighter.Aika is a young lady bogged down by duty, who veered off what she wanted to do, to help take care of her sick mom and in turn their family business. Everything is as normal as can be until she meets a certain customer in her family's restaurant and her life goes from normal to strange and dangerous in an instant. She is suddenly surrounded by monsters and powers she thpught were only myths and legends...and of course..she has to save the world. Easy! Lol. If you are looking for something a bit different i recommend this book. A good book to curl up as the days get colder.
Aika has a hidden ability awaken in her and that's when the trouble starts. How is she supposed to handle caring for her sick mother, studying for her medical degree and running their restaurant before this new ability to summon monsters? However when her mother is taken she can't ignore it anymore and ends up working with 2 shamans who are willing to train her as they help. Can she work out what is going on with her two helpers and her attraction to them whilst rescuing her mum?
WOW - if I could give this more than 5 stars I would. There was so much drama, mystery and action woven into this mystical story around an ancient Japanese folklore that I was hooked from start to finish. I couldn't put it down and ended up reading it until 3 am. I have loved books written individually by both these authors and thought it was worth a try and was blown away - these guys need to write together more.
Please note this is heading towards a MFM scenario so if you are not comfortable with that you may want to give this a skip, although you will miss out on a great book.
Aika is caring for her ill mother, working at her mother's restaurant to keep it running, and continuing her education to become a doctor. She wears a protective charm and practices the healing power of reiki, a Japanese method of healing. While working at the restaurant, Aika notices an elderly Japanese man dressed in older style clothing with a sketch pad. After acknowledging Aika's remarks to him, the man rushes from the restaurant and is hit by a bus. But Aika cannot find any evidence of him afterward. What happened to him? Why do some people look like hideous creatures now? Go along with Aika and find out why things have changed for her and what the future holds for her? I don't want to reveal too much of the book, but want each reader to discover the Japanese folklore woven through the storyline. DISCLAIMER------ The book does have some sexual overtones/tension with a build up to sexual scenes with Raiden and Shota.
I enjoy Walt and Cipriano's individual writing, so I snapped up this collaborative offering as soon as I saw it on Amazon. The plot was somewhat simplistic, but interesting, and I miss the depth the two writers have in their solo books. The authors created some interesting protagonists in a Japanese anime-type setting.
Unfortunately, the more I read, the more the plot unfolded like leveling up in a video game-- each chapter seemed to bring a problem that needed to be solved by gaining a token/weapon, before I could level up to the next challenge. I normally read 1-2 books per day, but I had to spread this one over half-a-week because it didn't hold my interest or keep me riveted. Gamers may enjoy the story and the way it's structured, but I prefer more traditional story progression.
As for the reverese-harem aspect-sadly lacking in romantic tension.
Yep, I was infuriated but I knew my lovely Aika wouldn't lose. Come on Aika-chan! I'm rooting for you and your harem. Please, let it happen. Please let her have all three men including the villain. Though I must say, Amaterasu is rather complicated. And how is she endowed with the shaman powers when no one in her family seemingly had any association with the main clan. I wonder what will happen. I hope it's good. Please, tell me Jasmine-san! I can't help it!
But overall, I LOVE THIS BOOK! Even if it is infuriating at the end with its rising tension. I still LOVE THIS BOOK! Highly recommend for people who love books with a fierce Japanese protagonist in a fantastical Japanese mythological world. [Ryujin, I'm looking at you bro. Keep up the stock market investments bruh!]
It's just a cool and modern take on the ancient mythology of Japan and the island's nations culture.
This newest book is well written and seamless between the two writers. While there is a lot of Japanese lore in the book, there is a glossary at the beginning and terms are explained throughout for those that wouldn’t have any knowledge. Aika’s transformation from timid shop girl to strong and understanding of the world she lives in is so well written it makes her a very good heroine. Her tribulations only make her stronger as she fights to find her place as a yokai shaman in this new world for her. Reading her story you don’t want it to end.
I loved all of the Japanese lore and meeting all of the different Yokai and Yoeki and how they each worked with their shamans. Looking forward to the next installment. Check out more reviews at underthebookmark.com
Fast paced and very entertaining. This is the first book in a new reverse harem series. It is a slow-burn, with a good dose of sexual tension. The main characters are funny, but know when it is time to be serious. They rarely got a break and the action just kept going. It is centered around Japanese folklore, which is something I haven't read in an RH yet. There are definitely issues that need to be resolved, but there wasn't too much of a cliffhanger. It left off at a good place and I am looking forward to the next book. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for action, sexual tension, and a few laugh out loud moments (at least I found them funny) sprinkled throughout. *I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
What's better than one sexy, badass shaman? Three, of course! Aika: Struggling college student, reluctant restaurant owner, and unknowing heir to a forgotten empire...
I was consumed by this read right from the first word. Loved the storyline, the adventure, the action, the struggles, the feelings.
I enjoyed reading this novel of the on Japanese mythology. I have always been fascinated by it and I love reading books based on so absolutely fell for this read.
Full of romance, action, adventure, Gods, monsters, monkeys, dragons and struggles.
Perfect for readers of Japanese mythology/reverse harem urban fantasy.
I love mythology and the Japanese mythos woven into this story were wonderful.
Aiko is a struggling college student, with a mother dying of cancer, a restaurant to run and no one else to lean on. She is all too steeped in reality no matter how many takes her mother has told her over the years. One day on her way home she hears a very unusual question being asked in an alley and sees one of those tales come to life. And this starts a crazy journey of toad monsters, talking crabs, dragons, monkey kings, Kabuki disguises and underwater parties. The start may be slow but once it gets going it really gets going!
I read this book a while ago, but I still remember a lot of scenes from it and can relive it in my memory - which is really a good sign. I loved the book, delved deep into the story from the beginning, and was totally taken by the combination of a great UF and Japanese mythology. I have been to Japan last year, and their culture has a very specific charm. So I was really glad to see it in this creative form! The story was full of supernatural, action-packed and with many surprising twists, and all the main characters are very likable or possess attractive treats that bind the reader to them and urge him/her to continue the story until the end.
A story that goes no where fast. I loved the history and culture, but it just felt... disingenuous. Forced. I enjoy Ms. Walt's writing in the Baine Chronicles, but most things were predictable in this series. I had to force myself to read this over a span of weeks . because I kept losing interest. I guess I just didn't feel a connection to the characters, nor did they convince their plight was worth it. It got DNF about the 35-40% point.
However, I will say the cover is one gorgeous piece. Hats off to whoever the artist was!
Wow, what a different kind of story. The inclusion of Japanese folklore is brilliant in this story and the action keeps you turning the pages, until you get to the end and realize you have to wait for the next book to find out what's next. That's ok the story is just too good to not want to read the next book. The romance in this one in simmering but its like a spark waiting to catch fire, who knows maybe there will be more in the next book.
I received an ARC of this story and have voluntarily chosen to review it here.
