Richard Klausen has survived eighteen grueling months at the Eastern front. Transferred to a security unit out off Lodz, Poland he soon finds out that fighting the Red Army was the easy task.
When his unit is assigned to do the unthinkable, will Richard obey his orders or his conscience?
Trouble Brewing is book 4 of the War Girl Series, but can be read as stand-alone.
Marion Kummerow was born and raised in Germany, before she set out to "discover the world" and lived in various countries. In 1999 she returned to Germany and settled down in Munich where she's now living with her family.
After dipping her toes with non-fiction books, she finally tackled the project dear to her heart. UNRELENTING is the story about her grandparents, who belonged to the German resistance and fought against the Nazi regime.
It's a book about resilience, love and the courage to stand up and do the right thing.
I have come to respect Marion Kummerow as a professional writer. I've enjoyed immensely each of her books. I am tempted to say this is the best so far, but I would say the same thing after reading the others.
Great series. I love WW 2 historical fiction and this is well done and holds your interest throughout the book. Each book had me wanting to find out what was happening with each character. Can’t wait for the next book in series.
Wehrmacht soldier Richard Klausen thinks he has experienced all the horror of war after serving on the Soviet front line. But his next assignment in Poland is worse. He sees the atrocities the SS inflict on the civilian population and it turns him against his side.
His quick thinking saves a Polish girl, Karen, from rape and possible death. He can't get her out of his mind. When they next meet, she saves him. She provides shelter and cover for him at her family's farm which she is managing.
Far from finding peace, Richard is faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, including Karen's resistance-fighting brother Stan. When Karen hears nearby prisoners are to be sent east, she wants to save her relatives. The task is easier said than done.
There's an exquisite tightening and easing of tension throughout this love story that makes it hard to put down. The main characters are emotionally engaging and I cared what happened to them.
Trouble is the fourth in the War Girl series but could be read as a stand-alone. I've read the others and recommend them.
I have loved every minute of this series and look forward to meeting the family again. Wish each book was longer. This time in history is so fascinating to me.
A German soldier, a young polish girl with ties to the resistance. The horror of war and the healing of love. Adventure, suspense and romance. Another excellent book in the series.
Excellent World War Two romance that starts with the portrayal of the horrors of fighting on the Eastern Front. It also touched on the horror endured by those living in the Warsaw ghetto. I enjoyed how the author portrayed the characters and their times of emotional turmoil while dealing with war and brutality, and how goodness often won in the end. The romance offered hope for a better future once the war ended.
Hard to grasp that boys not much older than my son were given rifles and sent off to be butchered in the trenches of WWII. This story is a compelling read, one that will clog your throat with tears in more than one scene. Brilliantly researched, this book would do a much better job in teaching young people what war was like than any history lesson I ever witnessed. It lets you feel the agonizing truth, confronts you with the question: who would I have been in this system? After 18 gruelling months at the front, young Richard slowly realizes that following orders is not always the best course of action - not if you have a conscience. On top of that, he falls in love with the enemy. Despite the brutal reality of WWII, this story is full of love and the hope of a better future. A page-turner that will keep you glued to the pages with a few heart-tearing twists. I definitely recommend this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Marion's writing is easy reading and her storyline plotlines are full of twists and turns that kept me on edge from the first to the last page. What I particularly like is that each of her books within this series are standalone. The characters however make you want to read more about the others (who are mentioned) and so you'll probably end up like me reading the entire series anyway. If you want several 'me' hours where you can dive into another life and place, then I recommend this book to read.
Another big hit from Marion Kummerow! This time the story shifts from the Klaussen girls to their brother, Richard. He is a soldier in the German army and has some harrowing experiences before finding himself in Poland, on a farm with a single girl. They fall in love, in bed, in trouble. Her brothers are with the Polish resistance. They don't trust Richard, but just work with them to get family out of the near by Nazi camp. With guts and fear, they succeed.
Once again this series delivers. This time the book is about Richard and what he does during World War 2. It is well written and historically accurate. The characters are plausible and their story is well told. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down, until I had read every page. And then I wanted to know more. Therefore, my next read is book 7 in the War Girls series: Bitter Tears. Thank you Marion for bringing this story to life.
Trouble Brewing is both a wonderful and a difficult book to read. I’ve read the previous books in the series. The subject matter is so sad, so disturbing, so horrifying. I’d like to thank the author for writing about this difficult part of history. I’m going to buy book 5 now.
I really enjoyed this book. It was nice to have a change of scenery and hear a bit more about the struggle people in Poland went through in wwii as that’s something I haven’t read much about. It was nice to have a change of narrative that wasn’t constantly about the reich needing German help to ensure the victory.
I love all things Marion Kummerow, and this does not disappoint! Ms. Kummerow writes the best historical fiction; all based on real events! This series was fascinating, this is Richards story. None of us would know what we would do unless we were in that day and time. I can't wait for the next book in the series!!
Continuing the story of a German family in the 2nd world .. this relates to the son Richard..quite short stories averages 200 words and costing £3.99 a book on kindle...I have read 3 which I feel is quite expensive when there are more books in the series...
Following "The War Girls", it was natural to continue with their missing brother, Richard. Romance, hatred, prejudice, ethnic cleansing, survival combine to keep one involved. I can't wait for the next book!
This was a very good book but, it did have some slow areas. I found it a little unlikely that a man who was fighting age could be out in the open working the farm for extended periods without being reported.
What more can I say about this series? It is compulsive reading and impossible for me to walk away from. I MUST find out how the characters’ lives play out. I highly recommend it.
