Judy’s mom takes the spotlight as the Moody family tries to give her the birthday she would like in a broadly funny episode just right for newly independent readers.
Make a wish, Mrs. Moody! Every year on Mom’s birthday, one way or another, something goes wrong-not-right. Maybe Judy’s been in a bad mood. Maybe Stink’s gotten a little carsick. Maybe Dad can’t bake Mom’s favorite carrot cake. But this year is going to be different. This year is going to be perfect. This year, Judy is going to do all she can to make sure Mom gets the happy birthday she deserves. Watch out! The Boss of Birthday (aka Judy) is on the job! Parsnip cake with avocado frosting, anyone?
"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."
For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."
Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."
More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.
Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.

Judy attempts to help her Mom have the best birthday ever. So far they've never had any luck, with one mishap after another always putting a damper on the special occasion. But this year Judy is determined to break the jinx.
This is a nice early reader for those not quite ready for the more advanced Judy Moody series. The book is broken down into just three chapters and includes plenty of pictures. There's nothing here that differs too much from other books in the Judy Moody world.
This book is part of the "Judy Moody and Friends" series. I picked up several of them at the library because of the big colour illustrations and because there are a variety of characters but they're still linked from being in the same group of friends. This one has Judy desperately wanting to give her mum a good birthday but things keep going wrong. Haha, I loved the parsnip cake! Poor Mum, I feel for her when she says that one birthday a year is enough! Ya can definitely feel the love though!
This was a fun read and a cute story about a family trying (and failing) to make their mom’s birthday perfect. While I enjoyed it, I wish it had ended a little differently. Overall would recommend, especially for elementary age (or any age!)
Judy Moody just wants her mother to have a good birthday. But from not getting to choose the restaurant for the family to eat at to having to make a costume for Stink, the day does not go as expected. I enjoy reading these shorter Judy Moody books with my 1st grade daughter.
All mothers out there will totally relate to this book. Not only can it be just another day, but often the "help" received is a catalyst for more work. Judy is determined to give her mom the perfect birthday. She organizes the gifts, the food, and the entertainment. Unfortunately, things don't quite go as planned. Despite the setbacks, Judy learns that birthdays are more about loved ones than having a perfect day. Cute book.
Entertaining early chapter children's book about Judy and Stink's efforts to give their mother a great birthday. Several things go wrong, but it is funny.
