Journey back in time to the American West, where the ancient prairie lands are stained with blood from the battles being waged between the Indians and White Man.
The Indians wish to continue living in freedom as they always have, but the White Man see them as savages who need to be eradicated.
Chief Black Kettle, of the Southern Cheyenne Indians, and his adopted daughter, Morning Dove, try and keep the peace with the Whites, wishing to protect their people from the needless bloodshed sweeping across the land.
Enter Clinton McKay, a veteran of the Civil War, who re-enlists in the cavalry and crosses paths with Morning Dove. The pair soon develop feelings for one another but fight against them, knowing society wouldn't allow them to be together, as they are on opposite sides of a war.
What will happen? Will they bow to an unjust society? Will their love flourish? Will Black Kettle keep his tribe safe? Join the adventure on the Great Plains in Whispers Among the Prairie.
The written dialogue as to how Native Americans talk, their sentence structure and phrases (when speaking in English) didn’t ring true in this story. (I’ve been around Native Americans and many Reservations for more than 40 years). Therefore, it was hard to believe the story in general. Yet I feel compelled to applaud the idea and plot.
I really enjoyed this book!!! It was very well written and I loved the way this author kept the historical context of just how difficult it was for the Native Americans fighting to preserve their culture when it was being taken away. I really loved the characters and how much they had to endure. It was very well written and I truly loved that love had no prejudice.
A great read. I love books about the American as I grew up with them as friends in Kansas and knew about Fort Hays and George Bent. This is a book that I read in one sitting as I couldn't put it down.
This book is great for someone who is looking for true life love hardships and finding solutions through faith no matter how you believe. This is real life that love can see you through.
This is the story of forbidden love during the wild west times when the white men and Indians were at war. It is full of action, adventures, betray al,jealousy, love and hope. I recommend it to everyone who likes westerns. I give it 5 stars.
Yep, This is a Western all right. And a romance story.
The Author did an OK job combining her goals.
But, the actual story is a bit soapy, as it TRIES (but fails?) to duplicate Cherokee conversations … there’s lots and lots of flowing, graceful words that seem just too cute to be accurate (or a compliment to The Author’s writing!).
And, at one point, a woman Indian who was taught to speak English, writes a note to her 100% Native Indian brother brave — this is a guy who knows few words of the American soldiers, and to my knowledge has no capability to read a note from his sister — but somehow he clearly understood everything he sister wrote. (Nah, I don’t believe this part, either.)
This was an amusing story that will entertain you, but isn’t great at reflecting an “Historical” depiction of the Wild, Wild West.
Working to find peace with the Indians as the government pushes the Indians off their land.
Interesting story about the treatment of some of the Great Plains Indians as the white men push them off their land. After the Civil War, Clinton McKay decides to reenlist in the cavalry and he is sent to the Great Plains to help keep peace with the Indians. He meets the Cheyenne, Morning Dove, the English speaking daughter of Chief Black Kettle. They fight against their developing love for each other, knowing it won't be accepted by others.
Clinton loved his sister and his nieces so much but he knew he had to go out and find a job after the Civil War ended. The only job he ever knew was being in the army. While in the army he met a beautiful woman named Morning Dove. He couldn't get her out of his head. Their love was pure but to all society it was also wrong.
Good Book by a new Author. I hope she writes more.
Best Western Historical Romance. Clinton and Morning Dove are in Love A white man with an Indian just wasn't acceptable, What will their Love cost them?
Your story would have been better off with at least a little historic facts. The main character, even though female, would never have been allowed to behave in such a way.
The story was good, but the writing was not. Terms such as 'munchkins' and 'gobsmacked' would not have been used in the 1800s. The last chapter seemed like a bunch of author's notes hashed together. It seemed like the author just wanted the story to end.
I enjoyed this book. It’s not to say there weren’t some pretty scary and sad parts, as there were many, and the fact that so much of it is was the true way of life for The Native Americans as the white man moved west. All in all, it has a good storyline and good characters.
Magnificent! A love story, an awesome western saga. The wars between white man and native American Indians indigenous people. I loved it. Get your copy today. Drama at every turn!
This story will keep your interest and have you reading all through the day. It is a wonderful love story that gives you a look into the1980's wild West.
Decent story line, but very poor writing. Many grammatical and spelling errors, too. The writing was oddly formal and incredibly awkward, especially the dialogue.
a Story that takes lace shortly after the Civil War about the army's attempt to get rid of the Indian tribes. It show the trail of bloodshed across the prairies of the west. it is the story of Chief Black Kettle's efforts to make peace with the white man.
Chief Black Kettle's adopted daughter, Morning Dove, has been groomed to work toward peace. She has been taught the English language so she can talk with white man.
At one point she is captured and held as a prisoner at an army base. She doesn't let anyone know that she understands the language they speak. Along comes Clinton McKay, a Civil War veteran, who because he has no way of earning a living, rejoins the army and is sent to this army base where Morning Dove is held prisoner. He keeps speaking to her and before long they began to have feelings for each other.
Because Indians are considered beneath white men there is no chance that their love can be satisfied. But they together decide what ever lies before them they will face it together. This is a tender love story. Buy the book and see where their love takes them. I know you will enjoy reading this book.
The world of the Cheyenne is changing. Morning Dove, the adopted daughter of Chief Black Kettle is learning more of the White Man’s world. Speaking their language is important to her father, so she is doing her best. As the Spirit of an old Medicine Man begins to contact her, she is frightened. She does not know what he wants from her, but she does not feel up to the task. There are others that are better suited to that. After the massacre at Sandy Creek, her tribe is moved, and there fate begins to change again. She is pulled in two different directions. She wants to be free, and she wants to do the best she can for her people. When another massacre occurs, she is left without her father and mother – and her bother is part of the Dog Soldiers, which could mean his death at any time. Clinton is looking for adventure. After the Civil War has ended, he decided to go back into the Army to find himself and regain his purpose. After heading back out west, he meets Morning Dove, and is taken with her. He finds himself wanting to protect her, and at the same time, falling in love with her. But to do so would go against everything, including his commission in the Cavalry. He must decide if he is going to follow his heart, or his career… Interesting book! An interesting adventure that spans the plains of the American West. I loved the references to Fort Hays, as I lived there for a time while growing up.
This book is a good read to escape back to the world of the wild west, with forbidden love between the native indians and the white man. Being transported back to a time of the American West way of life and a love story that would be deemed unacceptable by two different cultures, this book is hard to put down untill the end. I think this book would also make a good movie. Good read for escapism into the wild west, recommend it.
The story line was okay, if not somewhat unrealistic. I found the writing style hard to read. There are large blocks of dialog that go on for pages. The paragraphs ran together so it got the point I didn't know who said what at times. At points the narrative and conversation went on and on so that I got the feeling that it may have been filling to extend the page count.
I want to like this book more but I am having trouble.
Michelle did a great job with this story. It's a complex story that may have been better served as a series. Further development of Morning Dove's life before meeting Clinton, as well as more on their relationship and life in Canada would have been appreciated. I wanted more, especially at the end. Perhaps a sequel is in the works?
