What a fun start to an entertaining mixed format series for grades 3-5! Of course, real life will have to be suspended while reading about actual cats who burgle and evade the canine investigates bent on capturing them. Ophelia is the undisputed queen of incredible capers and does it with style and flair galore with her cousin Pierre always trying to dethrone her with a whole lot less panache. Text is regularly interrupted with graphic panels that are integral parts of the plot. Book 1 is fast-paced and entertaining and will certainly have readers asking for books 2 and 3 and hoping for more installments to come. No profanity, sexual content or violence and the cats’ code of returning all stolen items to their owner after the thrill of the heist is done is noted several times.
Thanks to the @kidlitexchange network for the review copy of this book - all opinions are my own.
“A great cat burglar needed to be stealthy and smart, and perform purr-fect crimes!...For a good cat burglar, it was all about the chase.”
The only thing international cat burglar Ophelia von Hairball V loves more than jewels is a challenge! So when the Furry Feline Burglary Institute (FFBI) offers a reward to whoever can steal a giant diamond from a heavily guarded Paris museum, she wants to prove once and for all that she is the best! The only catch is her boss insists she work with an inventor. She’s less than thrilled when Oscar Fishgerald Gold shows up at her door eager to join Ophelia in her latest escapade. But when her evil cousin Pierre von Purr-fect of Thievesylvania AND the Central Canine Intelligence Agency (CCIA) try to thwart Ophelia at every turn, she will need all the help she can get, even if it is from a hapless goldfish!
This new middle grade release is so much fun! Ophelia is a smart and sassy heroine, and sweet Oscar the fish is the purrfect partner-in-crime! Animal puns and silliness abound and will be sure to elicit lots of chuckles from cat-loving kiddos. It’s a fast-paced read, and the fun graphics and comic strips interwoven throughout the story make it accessible to young ones who are new to chapter books. It would also be a really fun read-aloud! Highly recommend for a fun, family-friendly read! I will definitely be purchasing a copy for my kids!
I was lucky enough to get my hands on an Advanced Reading Copy of Snazzy Cat Capers and decided to read it to my four-year-old daughter. Within the first few pages, we were both totally taken with Ophelia Von Hairball V. My daughter immediately wanted to craft herself a mask like Ophelia’s and turn a dress-up purse into a thieving satchel.
As we continued reading, we met Oscar Fishgerald Gold, the most so-fish-ticated inventor around. It became very clear early on that it would be nearly impossible for either of us to choose a favourite character. Although I have to say, I do have a soft spot for Oscar’s gentle brilliance.
There are so many carefully crafted details in this book that both kids and adults will LOVE! I’m talking multi-faceted characters, hilarious feline/fish puns, top-notch pop culture references, and more! Deanna, being the fleet-fingered writing ninja she is, even managed to sneak “Fish, please!” into the book. (I actually giggled with glee at that one!) These characters are written so vividly that with Neil’s accompanying illustrations they practically leap off the page at you.
Put Snazzy Cat Capers on your fall must-read list! This is a book that every member of your family will adore. I know everyone in our household is eagerly awaiting the arrival of book two!
Special thanks to Deanna Kent, Neil Hooson, and Imprint Books for sending an ARC to my #bookexcursion group in exchange for an honest review.
Cat burglar Ophelia Von Hairball V is an elite member of the FFBI (Furry Feline Burglary Institute). Well known for her love of all things sparkly, she equally enjoys the thrill of partaking in a challenging heist. Unlike her cousin and archrival Pierre, Ophelia follows the FFBI honor code with the small exception of returning 16 inventors in one year. FFBI’s motto is “purr-fect crimes” and recently, more cats are getting caught by the Central Canine Intelligence Agency (CCIA). Translation-all cat burglars need a paw-rtner in crime so much to Ophelia’s chagrin, she is paired with her 17th inventor, Oscar Fishgerald Gold.
Immediately after Oscar arrives, Ophelia and he discover Pierre’s scheme to thwart her participation in the Fifth Annual Purr-fect Heist Competition. While Oscar’s skills are instrumental in getting her to Paris in time, she stills prefers to work alone. Can Ophelia win the competition on her own or will she embrace her fintastic partner?
Snazzy Cat Capers is simply meowificent! Hilarious and fast-paced, I loved everything about this original new series-the dynamic characters, the page turning plot, the adorably eye catching illustrations, and the unique format, which is a blend of graphic novel and illustrated chapter book. Snazzy Cat Capers will be available on September 18, 2018 with two more books in the series releasing in 2019. Until then, meet sassy Ophelia and ingenious Oscar by clicking the link to view the book trailer.
This is a fun fast paced chapter book for kids. It follows an international cat burglar (who is in fact a cat) as she attempts a massive heist, foils her toughest rival, and learns to work with a partner. The characters are sassy and entertaining. The plot moves fast. The illustrations are a blend of sketches and comic strips which broke up the text nicely for newer readers. Readers will laugh at and root for Ophelia and her fintastic side kick.
Deanna Kent and Neil Hooson, a married couple from Kelowna, British Columbia, have partnered together to bring readers Snazzy Cat Capers, an entertaining, funny (and punny!) series opener featuring fashionable and fantastic cat burglar Ophelia von Hairball V and her ever-enthusiastic, stalwart partner/inventor Oscar Fishgerald Gold.
Diamond-loving Ophelia is a star member of the Furry Feline Burglary Institute (FFBI); a smart, super stylish cat thief who is one of the major banes of the Central Canine Intelligence Agency's (CCIA) existence. A master jewel thief, consistently evading the CCIA, and refusing to work with a partner/inventor, Ophelia finds herself in a bit of a pickle when her devious cousin- also a member of the FFBI and jealous of Ophelia's success- makes big moves to try and stop Ophelia from winning yet another heist competition. Ophelia, very, very reluctantly has to welcome inventor Oscar F. Gold- who has been assigned by FFBI to be her partner/inventor- into her exciting life. As Ophelia and Oscar work to outsmart and thwart her haughty, overly-confident cousin Pierre and the CCIA at almost every turn, Ophelia discovers that having a trustworthy and resourceful associate by her side isn't actually the worst thingever. Filled with lots of cool gadgets, light twists and turns, and pretty awesome feline espionage skills, Snazzy Cat Capers is a totally enjoyable read. The illustrations by Neil Hooson add great dimension to the story, making it even further appealing to readers who love their chapter books with added visual/graphic novel appeal.
A little bit of James Bond gadgetry, a little bit of Get Smart zaniness- starring a super cool feline and her fish inventor!- and a lot of punniness, this is good, solid fun that flies by. Readers who enjoy funny series with graphics like Two Dogs in a Trench Coat, The Bad Guys, Stick Cat, The Yeti Files, or similar reads, might especially have terrific fun with this series. Look forward to the second book in the series, The Fast and the Furriest, due out in the fall of 2019! Extras: Link to school and library Activity Kit!
I received a copy of this title courtesy of Raincoast Books in exchange for an honest review and for the purposes of a blog post. All opinions and comments are my own.
Thank you @kidlitexchange @imprintreads and @deannamuses for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own. Snazzy Cat Capers is available now!!!
Meet Ophelia Von Hairball V of Burglaria. She’s a true diva, enjoys her spa time and just so happens to work for the Furry Feline Burglary Institute (FFBI) as one of the best cat burglars in the world. Problem is she insists on working alone even though Director MEW keeps sending different inventors to help her pull off her purr-fect crimes. Inventors are paw-rtners who help keep cats from getting caught by the Central Canine Intelligience Agency (CCIA)! Ophelia’s newest inventor is a clever little guy named Oscar Fishgerald Gold. He is eager to prove his importance and excited to go out in the field with such a legend. Their first assignment is to compete for the heist trophy and be recognized as the FFBI’s best cat burglar. All they have to do is steal a rare Himalayan diamond from a highly guarded Paris Mew-seum. Ophelia needs to quickly learn how to work with a sidekick because she is going to need all the help she can get in order to outsmart her cousin, Pierre von Purr-fect of Thieveslvania.
This is such a fun start to a new chapter book series. The characters are incredibly witty, cute and just downright entertaining. The story is told in short, high-paced chapters. It would be a great book to read aloud! I loved Ophelia’s quotes as well as the various animal puns and clever humor. It also contains some fantastic illustrations and comics by Neil Hooson (@nhooson). They truly helped bring the story to life and were so fun to look at!!! I will definitely purchase this book for my cat loving second grader. I will also be on the lookout for the sequel, Snazzy Cat Capers: The Fast and the Furriest!
Ophelia von Hairball V is the world’s greatest cat burglar; she’s a celebrity among her peers at the FFBI (Furry Feline Burglary Institute), the bane of the Central Canine Intelligence Agency (CCIA), and the envy of her cousin and FELLOW FFBI cat burglar, Pierre. Her next challenge: steal a rare Himalayan diamond from the Belle Mew-seum in Paris for the FFBI’s Annual Purr-fect Heist Competition! There’s only one hairball: Oscar Fishgerald Gold. He’s the newest in a series of inventors the FFBI wants Ophelia to work with, but Ophelia is a one-feline show. Oscar is persistent, though, and finagles his way onto the mission. Can this cat-and-fish combo snag the diamond and win the top spot again? Will the CCIA finally catch up to Ophelia? Or will Ophelia’s scheming cousin, Pierre, outsmart Ophelia and win the diamond and the top spot for himself?
Snazzy Cat Capers is the first in a fun new intermediate/middle grade series, and it is too much fun. Ophelia von Hairball V is a fabulous diva with an eye for the good life, and even though she’s a thief, she’s not all bad: the FFBI just encourages cat burglary to keep their skills sharp; the heisted goods are always returned. Eventually. There are black and white graphic novel panels and artwork throughout the story, breaking up the narrative by communicating a chunk of story visually and giving reluctant readers a nice bridge into linear reading. Oscar is a sweet, smart sidekick who won’t give up his chance to be taken seriously – he’s kind of like James Bond’s Q. Every chapter starts off with a life quote from Ophelia that provides some wink-nudge insight into her divahood: “You can’t possibly be your best if you haven’t had a manicure. Or if you’re a dog”; “They say humility is the key. Thankfully, I can pick any lock”; “When all hope seems lost, check the last handbag you used. It might still be there”. There are a lot of laughs, some fun action and adventure, and a whodunit showdown that kids will love. The next installment is out next year, so talk this one up and get your readers on board. And show them some Kim Possible – not an animal show (except for the naked mole rat, Rufus), but still fun to watch. Booktalk and display with Jonathan Bernstein’s Bridget Wilder trilogy or Stuart Gibbs’ Spy School series.
What a purrfectly delightful romp! If the gorgeous and colourful art images on the outside aren't captivating enough to draw you in, you just have to crack the cover and start reading to realize Snazzy Cat Capers, Volume 1 is more than worthy of your time! Main character and feline diva extraordinaire, the internationally renowned cat burglar Ophelia von Hairball V is the most sympathetic criminal you'll ever encounter, with her amewsing and inspirational chapter-launching quotes - "There will be times in life that aren't fun. Try not to have too many of those." -incontrovertible sartorial style, and positively catty, yet somehow still charming, competitive streak. Whether she's coming up with ways to ditch her fishy new inventor sidekick Oscar Fishgerald Gold, congratulating herself on her stealthy successes, or just plain being snazzy, Ophelia, and all her adventures, will have readers of all ages hooked! Smart, witty writing. Great story. Wonderful illustrations. I give this one five stars and cannot wait for the next book in this three-part series!
From this book's cover and title, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, but since I love cats, I figured that I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did since this is the start of a promising series. The egotistical and very proud Ophelia Von Hairball V is a noted cat burglar--literally!--but when she realizes that she's missed several invitations to compete with others to steal the Himalayan diamond in Paris, she will go to any lengths to get that jewel. Humor is added by her sidekick, Oscar Fitzgerald Gold, and the fact that she is working for the Furry Feline Burglary Institute (FFBI) and jousting with her nemesis, Pierre, at various turns. I found the story amusing and engaging, and loved Ophelia and the pithy sayings that separate each chapter. There are plenty of illustrations to hold readers' interest too. Bring on that second installment of her adventures. Anyone wanting to smile, laugh, and be entertained will enjoy this title.
What a fun read! Snazzy Cat Capers is about Ophelia Von Hairball V, a cat burglar trying to win the ultimate prize by snatching a very prized jewel. Ophelia prefers to work by herself, but on this mission, she’s forced to work with Oscar the goldfish, the clever inventor sent to her from the Feline Burglary Institute. Despite her many attempts to send Oscar packing, the goldfish not only proves his talents, but Ophelia learns that working with someone might not be that bad after all.
This was such a clever book. The vocabulary and puns were so cute, as was the imagination behind the characters. I loved the quotes from Ophelia at the beginning of the chapters. I could just envision her sitting down for a kitty Vogue interview and lapping up the attention! The pace of the book was enjoyable, there was always an adventure and never a dull moment!
I would have loved to read more about the canine institute; a sequel perhaps!?
Ophelia von Hairball V takes pride in being the best cat burglar in the world. She fancies herself a feline James Bond. She works for the Furry Feline Burglary Institute (FFBI) and keeps sending back the inventors they send to work with her. When Oscar Fishgerald Gold (a goldfish of course) shows up and claims to be her partner, she has to try to ditch Oscar, avoid the Central Canine Intelligence Agency (CCIA), win the FFBI’s 5th annual “Purr-fect Heist Competition,” and avoid the sabotage attempts of her cousin Pierre von Rascal of Thievesylvania. Filled with fun illustrations and Ophelia’s aphorisms (“There will be times in life that aren’t fun. Try not to have too many of those.”), this will be a fun book for fans of humorous adventures and perhaps a next step for graphic novel readers.
This new release by Deanna Kent "Snazzy Cat Capers" focuses on an two unlikely characters the reader will ever meet....Ophelia Von Hairball V and Oscar Fishgerald Gold. An unlikely duo, one eager and one reluctant, embark on a zany map-cap mystery/spy adventure that will have the reader cheering on this dynamic team!
I found myself delighted and captivated by the puns, laughs and suspense sprinkled throughout the story. Wonderful graphics by Neil Hooson add further dimension to the tale of Ophelia and Oscar.
Cannot wait to follow the further adventures of Snazzy Cat Capers in "The fast and the furriest" and "Meow or Never"!!
Snazzy Cat Capers is seriously a delightful read from beginning to end that will capture even the most reluctant reader!

Thanks to School Library Journal for a review copy of this book.
What an adventure! Ophelia Von Hairball is my new hero!! From the sassy cat puns to the beautiful illustrations, this book is a new family favourite in our house! The added comic strip scenes really help with visualizing the peril our fearless agent faces, and the fun inspirational quotes between chapters had us wanting to keep reading to find the next quote. Great book to share with any age! What a page turner, can't wait to see what Ophelia gets up to next time!
A cute, fun heist story starring a diva cat burglar and her inventor sidekick. The illustrations include letters and pictures and comic panels that are integral to the story telling. A couple of the transitions from text to illustration and back were a little clunky, but overall the style works. The whole story was great fun, and I'm looking forward to reading book 2.
I love it so far! I haven't finished it yet but I am really enjoying it. The puns are puurrffect! They bring a smile to my face and I love the confidence of Ophelia. She is such a little Diva! The illustrations are so adorable, I love the amount of small details. I really look forward to seeing and reading more!
4.5 stars. I don't know why, but this book just didn't seem like a 5 star! The plot was good, and Pierre and his huge eyebrow was an excellent character! The book WAS snazzy, and I'm about to read the second one. It was VERY funny!
P.S. My mom thought that Ophelia's tail was Oscar's HUGE hair! Tee hee hee! I NEED TO BUY THIS BOOK!! And my Mom will NOT admit that Oscar does NOT have hair! Lol.
This was fine. This is about a cat burglar trying to beat her cousin and archenemy in a competition to steal a diamond. She gets a fish side kick thats an "inventor". This felt like it could've been later in the series because there is a lot unexplained, but even with explanation this wold've just been meh for me.
Snazzy Cat Capers by Deanna Kent is a rollicking adventure. The illustrations by Neil Hooson are a perfect compliment to the text. Readers are going to be drawn in by the adventure and humor! Looking forward to reading more of this series.
I Loved Snazzy Cat Capers! Ophelia (a cat) is used to working alone but when she gets a new inventor (a fish) she learns the power of a team. She is smart but together they are brilliant. Their adventures are adorable and always fashionable! 🐠 🐈 💎
Espionage - check. Diamonds - check. Cunning rivals - check. Snazzy Cat Cappers has got it all. This is a page-turner that will likely delight your kids and entertain you too. In fact, put your feet up in a bubble bath and read it first. It’s what Ophelia would want you to do.
A stealthy cat burglar is forced to team up on a mission, but she prefers being more of a solo act. Lots of puns and shenanigans are found in the pages of this book, along with black & white graphics, too. Fintastic & ummm... meowy fun?
My 9 year old daughter and 7 year old son went crazy for this book. We all looked forward to reading a chapter every night. It is fun to find books that you all giggle about-some of the fish (Oscar Gold) outfits had us in stitches. 2nd and 3rd in this series are also hilarious.
This fun caper appeals to both children and adults alike with its high-octane pace that's on the level for the kids, but includes slick nods to action favourites like James Bond. Loved reading it to my boys!
What a cute and funny story for young readers. There were several times when I thought, “Oh, that was very clever!” I’m excited to host a virtual author visit with Deanna Kent and Neil Hooson tomorrow and hear about their new projects.
