Two young adventure-loving and gadget-obsessed penguins dream of joining the FBI (Frosty Bureau of Investigation).

Adventure-loving penguin Jackson dreams of being a secret agent like his Uncle Bryn, who works for the Frosty Bureau of Investigation. Jackson and his gadget-inventing best friend Quigley might officially be too young to join the FBI, but they aren’t going to let that stop them! They just need to come up with the right plan to prove that they are worthy.

But when one of Q’s inventions goes dangerously wrong, Jackson suddenly finds himself dropped right in the middle of an FBI stakeout. There’s fishy business afoot at the city’s aquarium; rare fish are vanishing and not even the FBI can work out what’s going on. It’s up to Jackson and Quigley to solve the crime!

This is absolutely precious. My son and I listened to it on disc and we enjoyed it so much. It's cute but has a good storyline with puns along the way. My son is 10 and was able to predict some components but it was not too advanced, nor too childish for him. He was actually disappointed that the novel was over when we finished.

This book was awesome! I felt that it was light and fluffy and incredibly entertaining. I thought that the puns were hilarious and it helped you connect to the book. An example of one of the puns is the FBI. The FBI are not the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but rather the Frosty Bureau of Investigation.

Nathan really enjoyed this one. Jackson and Quigley are young penguins who dream of being in the FBI...the Frosty Bureau of Investigation. They go on a little adventure to help investigate some missing rare fish. Cute story, fun to read aloud with him. He is hoping for a second book in the series.

Spy Penguins by Sam Hay, illustrated by Marek Jagucki, 225 pages. Feiwel and Griends (Macmillan), 2018. $14.

Violence: PG (spy-type danger)

BUYING ADVISORY: EL – ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Jackson (who calls himself 00Zero) wants nothing more than to work for the FBI (Frosty Bureau of Investigation). After failing to capture on video his skills with a sled that had been modified by his best friend and inventor, Quigley (also known as Agent A), he stumbles into a real FBI investigation that he is determined to solve. Rare and endangered sea creatures are disappearing from the city aquarium. The situation is further complicated because the dad of their friend Lily, an employee at the aquarium, is a primary suspect and his job is in jeopardy, and his uncle’s job with the FBI is, too. Jackson soon narrows in on a more likely suspect -- the cruel celebrity owner (“Coldfinger”) of a new restaurant next door. After a few false starts and wrong turns, with the added complications of having to sneak past the eagle eyes of Jackson’s mom as well as protect the egg of his soon-to-be younger sibling, Jackson and his friends help solve the case.

If you like everything penguin and spy stories, then this is the book for you. With names relating to spying or the frozen environment, gadgets that are cool but sometimes go sideways, and illustrations on almost every other spread, this is a fast-moving fun adventure. The second book in the series is also now available.

Spy Penguins is the first in a new series of crime-capers that stars two adventure-seeking wanna-be secret agents who are desperate to prove that they are up to joining the agency despite only being hatchlings.

Jackson and Quigley want nothing more than to join the FBI (the Frosty Bureau of Investigation). They are sure that their ice-cool inventions, fin-tastic plans and brrrr-illiant detective skills are just what the FBI are looking for.

But their latest invention attracts the attention of the FBI for all the wrong reasons and the head of the organisation is seriously unimpressed. When the two friends learn of some fishy goings-on at the local aquarium they are determined to show the FBI that they have what it takes to become secret agents…

Sam Hay delivers a fast-paced and highly entertaining mystery read about two brilliant penguins who are determined to crack a very fishy crime and show the FBI that even hatchlings are capable of being secret agents. Readers will love joining Jackson and Quigley on their crime fighting escapades that involve spying, daring plans and of course, the wearing of a disguise - in this case an invisibility cloak made out of sardine poop! There are plenty of flippers in a flap, inventions going wrong and just a little bit of mischief from Jackson and Quigley who have the knack of getting themselves into spots of bother. If there’s trouble to be found then these two will find it.

And fighting crime is not going to be easy for the duo, especially with Jackson’s eagle-eyed, or perhaps that should be penguin-eyed, mother watching their every move. There’s also super villain, Coldfinger, to overcome who won’t think twice about putting Jackson and Quigley in the deep freeze or feeding them to the sharks!

Penguin wordplay and amusing puns will keep the laughs coming as will the cartoon style illustrations that appear throughout. Readers can expect to learn a bit about penguins too as the occasional penguin fact is woven into the narrative (FYI -the wearing of a sardine poop cloak will probably not make you invisible).

This is one flippin’ cool read that is fin-tastic fun!

“Let’s do this!” cries Jackson as he comes up with another master plan to convince the FBI (FrozenSpy Bureau of Investigation), to hire him.

His best buddy Quigley is just as keen to join the FBI, but his skill is dreaming up and building crime fighting vehicles and gadgets. Between these young penguin friends, there is always an adventure waiting to happen.

Jackson’s uncle Bryn works for the FBI and is constantly leaving his top secret gadgets behind or telling them things he shouldn’t. One day when Jackson literally lands in the middle of an investigation stake out at the local aquarium, Uncle Bryn gets in trouble again. The FBI boss is very close to firing him.

Jackson is determined to help his uncle keep his job, and be hired at the same time. The best way he can see to do that is to solve the crime at the Aquarium. Someone is stealing the endangered fish! With Quigley keen to help with more gadget know-how, the young penguin friends are soon swimming in trouble way over their heads.

Action, lots of laughs, and ice and ocean puns, make this adventure of two keen-to-be-spies penguins very enjoyable. Not only are they up against an evil genius, they have to outwit Jackson’s eagle-eye mum, keep his soon-to-be-sibling egg safe and save his uncle’s job. Not to mention finding and protecting precious endangered sea wildlife.

Fun, gadgets, spies and villains. All mixed up with two fearless penguins. Perfect.

Hatchlings Jackson and Quigley aspire to be FBI (Frosty Bureau of Investigation) agents like Jackson’s Uncle Bryn, but they are dismissed as too young to be of any importance. When they stumble upon the bureau’s newest secret case, they are determined that they will solve it. Will they be able to evade his mom’s bad behavior detection skills and use their “unique” investigation techniques to solve who is stealing exotic creatures from the aquarium and why?

Fans of fast paced action, penguin humor, and gross out jokes will certainly enjoy this middle grade chapter book about our two unlikely penguin heroes. Comical black and white illustrations by Maerk Jagucki are inserted for maximum kid appeal for Sam Hay’s “fishy” spy mystery. Readers will probably ask if there are any more books about our duo and it seems that this might not be the only caper in the pipeline as it is advertised on the author’s website as the first book in a new US series.

I would recommend this book for purchase for school and public library collections looking for high interest books that will appeal to elementary kids looking for a fast and satisfying read.

Jackson and his best friend Quigley are determined to become junior members of the FBI (Frosty Bureau of Investigation). They are trying to do something to show the FBI they have what it takes. 00Zero (aka Jackson) is going to make a video of him driving one of Quigley's newest inventions. That doesn't go exactly according to plan, but it does tune them into a real, live case that needs a couple of brave agents to solve it. Rare fish are disappearing from the local aquarium even though it is under 24/7 camera surveillance. Can they figure out who is stealing the fish and why? Or will they end up grounded for life instead?

This is a fun, lighthearted nod to James Bond redone with two somewhat bumbling young penguins in a world where penguins drive snowmobiles and live in elaborate ice houses. Kids will completely miss the James Bond references (at least I hope so, the target audience is somewhere around 2nd-4th grade ) but parents can read this aloud and enjoy them. Kids will enjoy the hijinks of Jackson and Quigley, the great illustrations throughout, and the spy plot. Highly recommended to little thriller fans and penguin lovers.

No content issues.

This book was so cute and so imaginative. When rare fish are disappearing, Jackson and Quigley, two young penguins and aspiring FBI (Frosty Bureau of Investigation) members take on the case. Despite all the normal challenges with such a complicated investigation, these two have added challenges such as making sure their mothers don’t find out what they’re up to.

I loved how so much of the word choices in this book made it penguin friendly, and I loved the little penguin facts that were subtly included. I found myself very invested in Jackson and Quigley’s case and loved their ingenuity and resourcefulness to solve the crime and save the day. Very enjoyable, even as an adult.

Welcome to a world of penguins where fish theft is high crime, soon-to-be sibling eggs need to be babysat, and all the cheesy penguin jokes are acceptable. This is a fun book (and sequel) all about two friends who want to be FBI agents. They use inventiveness and spy skills to solve the biggest cases in town in an attempt to earn them a spot in the real FBI. It is quirky and action packed and dotted with puns and references. These high paced chapter books are engaging and great for kids starting to build confidence in their reading skills.

I found this to be a fun adventure story for its intended age group. The wordplay and occasional James Bond references (in penguin-ified terms) had me laughing. However, I didn't care for the sneaking-around-behind-mom's-back and forced gender role reversals that the author felt was necessary to the plot. Those points aside, I would recommend it to my child with a heads-up about those concerns first.

This is a cute story that children will enjoy. The penguins are mischievous characters that are searching for a way to solve a crime and help a friend out. They come up with plans and inventions to help them... some work and some do not. This adds to the enjoyment and comical nature of the story! It would be a fun book for elementary students. It is written on a 4th grade reading level, and the content is perfect for children in younger grades that read above their grade level.

This book is about 2 young penguins who want to become FBI agents. So they try figuring out who is stealing the missing fish from the aquarium so they can get the jobs. I like that you don't know what's going to happen next. I like the suspense. There's nothing I don't like about this book.

What a fun first book in a series. Jackson and Quigley want to be FBI agents. They are fearless and want to help. They will stop and nothing to make their dreams come true.

Mr. Hay made this book so fun. My son and I read it together. We were chuckling and enjoying each step of the way. Cannot wait to read the next one!!

I wasn't convinced I was going to like Spy Penguins when I first started, but Agents 00Zero and Q grew on me. I still rolled my eyes when the insult "Barf Beak" was thrown out and the plot is definitely predictable, but I know my students are going to love this one. 🐧
