Robert Hansen, a baker from Alaska, hunted down his victims without mercy. He did the unthinkable, making hunting much more than a sport...
Robert Hansen dubbed the "Butcher Baker" killed at least 19 women. Taking the crime escalator to the top, Hansen went from petty thief and arsonist to rapist to serial killer over his lifetime, all while maintaining the facade of a shy and gentle family man. He was a baker in Anchorage, Alaska, a husband, and the father of two children. But there are at least 30 women who lived through the horror of being kidnapped, raped, and abused by Hansen-and at least 19 who did not survive their encounters with the hunter at all.
The language was juvenile and rigid, and riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes.
This was a serial killer I hadn't heard of before and I was shocked to read about his crimes and how many times he would've been caught if people had taken matters more seriously. I found the book to be detailed enough to tell Robert Christian Hansen but the flow of the writing made it a frustrating read.
The life & times of American serial killer: Robert Christian Hansen Butcher Baker (2/15/1939–8/21/2014),
I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.
Warning: This book contains descriptive accounts of extremely graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material (rape, prostitution, stripper, minor/adult verbal, psychological, emotional, physical & sexual abuse) which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader. If you are especially sensitive to this type of material, it is strongly advised not to read any further.
An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written serial killer book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great movie, a classroom PP presentation, or better yet a paid-per-view mini-TV series or even a documentary (Crime Museum; True Crime; American Crime Story; Investigative Discovery. It was just OK for me so I will only rate it at 4/5 stars.

Hansen puts his own spin on “The Most Dangerous Game”: “In his version, women would be sent into the Alaskan wilderness naked and blindfolded and then hunted down like animals.”
Born and raised in rural Iowa, Hansen’s parents were Danish immigrants. They had him working like an indentured servant in their family bakery since early childhood. A natural lefty, they forced Hansen to learn to use his right hand as his dominant one.
Between his stutter and his pockmarked face (from severe acne scars), Hansen became a withdrawn loner.
After leaving Iowa, Hansen and his new family settled in Alaska. He bought and ran his own bakery, and had a passion for big game hunting.
In the 1970s, the oil boom generated an influx of people to Alaska. Hansen targeted prostitutes and exotic dancers.
FBI profiler and criminal psychologist John Douglas developed the profile that would aid in Hansen’s capture.
19 confirmed murder victims; at least 30 women who were kidnapped, raped, and otherwise abused.
The segments about criminal profiling (Mr. Douglas) work well. In fact, the structural departure of this work from his other biographies is not unwelcome. It’s a nice changeup to spend more time on the mental/pathological side of things.
After his convictions, Hansen died in prison. Many of his victims are still unidentified and/or unknown.
(I knew I’d heard of this guy! There’s a 2013 movie about him--The Frozen Ground--where Vanessa Hudgens plays the stripper (Cindy Paulson). John Cusack is Robert Hansen; Nicholas Cage is Detective Glenn Flothe.)
“Taking the crime escalator to the top, Hansen went from petty thief and arsonist to rapist to serial killer over his lifetime, all while maintaining the façade of a shy and gentle family man.”
After reading another book by this author I found this one no where near as good. Quite repetitive and drawn out. Maybe it’s due to the fact this book only covers one person, the previous book covered many. Not a bad read but enjoy the last one more.
Well researched and flowing detail with proper tribute paid to the sad multitude of victims in this story. This book kept me turning the pages and hungry for the final justice of this killer. Bravo Mr. Smith!
Mostly about mental health, what Hansen was diagnosed with rather than the crimes that he committed. The crimes each have a tiny paragraph with very little information. I was hoping for more on the crimes and the victims.
