Koven Chronicles #1

The Shade Amulet: An Urban Fantasy with Elemental Magic

Rate this book
Who’s more dangerous—the brooding, attractive man she’s partnered with or the things they’re hunting? Lizzie Ashton thought being a professional Fire Impeder was dangerous, but using her magic to stop bombs, guns, and fires before they start is nothing compared to what happens when Abel, an intense man she’s worked with previously, storms back into her life. Abel needs assistance with a dangerous task that only Lizzie can do. She hesitates to accept his job offer, as what little she knows of his dark past unnerves her, despite their moments of attraction. But when the local police department calls her in on a disturbing murder investigation, Lizzie must put aside her misgivings and partner up with Abel. Luckily, she has the Shade Amulet to help her. But as more people are murdered—and closer to Lizzie's home—the case quickly becomes personal. Is this job worth her life? If you enjoy edge-of-your-seat fantasy action, slightly snarky humor, and a hint of romance, you’ll love the first book in the pulse-pounding Koven Chronicles. The Shade Amulet will thrill you to the core. It will keep you up late into the night, devouring its pages. Grab it now.

Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and fluently speaks 2 ½ languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.

Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.

I have been following Andrea Pearson for some time now. I love her sense of humor, which comes out in her writing style. Her books deal with danger in a light hearted manner. That is not to say that her characters don’t take the danger seriously, because they do.

Here’s an example:

She whacked me once as if chastising me for not obeying sooner, then scrambled off as I stretched.

Lizzie is talking about her cat and I couldn’t help but smile, letting a picture run through my head.

Lizzie is an Arete, a fourth born child with special powers, a Fire Impeder. She is able to micro manage fire, right down to individual molecules, preventing the sparks from igniting

Humans are aware of supernaturals, because they have been here before.

“…demons from other planets have come out of sheer curiosity. I’m worried they’ll like it enough to stay.”

They are back, because a Prophecy given many years ago said she would be born and would be a danger to all the demons. From the hellhounds to the fire vampires. I mean, aren’t regular vampires bad enough? Now, Andrea Pearson has to crank them up.

She must go the Alaska to learn of The Prophecy, found in the Akashic records. The Shade Amulet will help protect her.

Wowzers – he smelled good.

There is a triangle, of sorts, between Abel, Cole and Lizzie. When she lets Cole know there is another man she has feelings for:

“Good. Don’t underestimate the need a man has to conquer.”

I feel this is very much for teen and young adults and was a spin off of another series, though the description does not say that. The characters keep referring back to previous events and I feel like I’m missing out on something. That won’t stop me from continuing on to the next story in the Koven Chronicles, The Black Masquerade.

In a note from the author she states that every time someone leaves a review, Lizzie punches a hound in the face. See these hellhounds are a series problem, I’m all for that.

The Shade Amulet is the first book in Andrea Pearson’s Koven Chronicles. In truth, Andrea Pearson is an author to have appeared on my radar a few times, having grabbed my attention through my curiosity towards the Mosaic Chronicles. When the chance came about to read The Shade Amulet, however, I decided to jump into a different series by the author.

In truth, The Shade Amulet is more of a two-point-five-star rating for me. I rounded it up to three stars for one main reason – I feel as though most of my inability to understand the story is due to having not read the Mosaic Chronicles. Although this is clearly a standalone story, I felt as though there was something missing throughout.

You see, the world seems really interesting. There were many elements that intrigued me, but I never really understood them. It felt as though we were expected to understand the magic and the world, reading as though we’d do better if we had read the author’s other work. At no point does it say it is necessary to read the Mosaic Chronicles, yet enough references were made for me to feel as though I was lacking through having not read it. Thus, I feel as though my enjoyment of the story would have been increased had I read the Mosaic series first.

The story itself was simple, but attention grabbing. A lot happens throughout, and there are plenty of things open for the rest of the series. At times I felt as though there were too many things for such a short read, with certain things seeming forced into the story simply to meet a checklist (for example, an unnecessary love triangle), but for the most part I was intrigued by all that played out.

Whilst I am interested in seeing where the series goes next, I feel as though I will not do so until I have read the Mosaic Chronicles. For those who are a fan of Andrea Pearson, and have followed her work, I’m sure this will be another fun story in a well-known world.

I recently had the chance to read this ARC. It is marked as a can be read as a standalone but has another series it coincides with. Which I haven't read and I felt like I was missing something the entire time. It kept referencing things that previously happened, to which I had no clue what they were. It didn't really hinder what was going on, nor did it really take away from what this series is going to be about. It just irritated me personally, I didn't like not knowing the history with the characters. Since it seemed like there was quite a bit, from the previous series.

This was a fast paced read, so to someone it might night even make a difference. The world building did completely lack in my opinion. I feel like this might be because of the whole previous series that it goes along with.

Upon further inspection, the previous series that it goes along with is 9 books long. So I feel that should be kept in mind when debating on starting this series if you haven't read the first one. The first book is free on Kindle I might add as well.

All in all my final thoughts are that this is a fast paced, easy read. I liked it for the most part. It is a 3.5 rating in my book. I just wish it explained a little bit more than it does and had a bit more world building as well. Since it doesn't have to be read with the other series.

Lizzie is a professional Fire Impeder – a Fire Arete who can stop sparks from starting. Lizzie does not start fires she stops them from starting or puts them out. She can stop a gun from firing or she can stop a bomb from going off by stopping the spark from becoming a flame.

By day Lizzie helps out fire department by helping to put out fires and she helps out the police department by stopping a criminal’s gun from firing or stops a bomb from exploding.

By night she hunts fire vampires and they are not your sparkling vampires neither are they hot in the looks department that is and she also tracks down hounds. Nope vampires are not myth like Lizzie thought no they are very much real and like the hounds are hunting Lizzie and want to destroy her.

In order to stop these hounds Lizzie needs the help from a shade amulet which she does not have. To stop the hounds and safe Earth Lizzie must find where this amulet’s and go get it without it she is doomed and so is Earth.

The Shade Amulet is the first book that I have read by Andrea Pearson. I have read in other reviews that Lizzie is a character from the Mosaic Chronicles which I have not read. In saying this I don’t feel as if I was missing out on anything or that there were any holes in Lizzie’s story. I really enjoyed reading about Lizzie and her ability to stop a spark from igniting. Oh and the fire vampires and the hound were awesome too.

The Shade Amulet was a nice clean read that I believe is suitable for all ages. I can’t wait to read more about Lizzie, Abel, Cole, Nicole, the fire vampires and the hounds.

The Shade Amulet is the first of the Koven Chronicles, a series about Lizzie, a side character from the Mosaic Chronicles. I didn’t really care for/about Lizzie when I read the Mosaic Chronicles, but after reading this book, I love her. This book sets up what will happen throughout the series, interspersed with a bit of character development and Lizzie doing awesome things. The pace was perfect and it is very well edited. I highly recommend reading it to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy. While she was a character in the Mosaic Chronicles and things that happened in that series are referred to, there is no need to read that series before reading this book (though reading them certainly would add to your enjoyment of The Shade Amulet.)

Interesting Storyline

I enjoyed the book. It has an interesting storyline and a main character that narrates the story from her point of view. She is learning about new aspects of her abilities and also having some romantic feelings for two different men. It is a well written story and I would like to read more about the characters.

The shade of amulet tells the story of the adventures of Lizzie the friend of Nicole's.
Although I was disappointed at the start that Nicole wasn't part of the story as a huge fan of Mosaic Chronicles after I started reading the book the disappointment left away.
The story is really good, with good pace and makes you want to keep reading

The Shade Amulet by Andrea Pearson is book one in her Koven Chronicles series. In this book we are introduced to Lizzie. Lizzie is a Fire Impeder. She works to stop fires from sparking and starting, or helps to snuff them out. It’s not an easy task, but it’s one that she is capable at doing. While Fire Impeders are rare, Lizzie doesn’t abuse the power that she has whenever she takes a job. Lizzie lives alone with her cat, and thanks to her job paying decent she is able to live comfortably. One day while she is out with her cat Sia, she comes across what appears to be a large dog. The dog is eating something, and only when she gets closer does she see something truly horrifying. Little does she know that the dog is just the tip of the iceberg of something dark and dangerous that is coming. After her friend arrives, Lizzie learns from Nicole and Alexander that the dog she saw was not really a dog. That there are creatures from other worlds showing up on Earth and they are searching for something. Lizzie is warned that she is a potential target because of her power, and they will continue to hunt for her until they destroy her. There is much that Lizzie must learn if she is going to stay alive. Lizzie must find and acquire the Shade amulet, if she hopes to stay alive to be able to confront and stand against the creatures that are coming.
This is the first book that I have read by Andrea Pearson, and I enjoyed this novel. Lizzie, overall, is an engaging and interesting character. She’s strong and independent. Despite the fact that she could abuse the power that she holds, with Fire Impeders being rare, she never charges huge prices for her services. She does what she can no matter how tired she is. She knows the risks of pushing herself too far with her powers. There is some romance in this story. It pops up expectantly with one character, only for the love interest to shift to another. One hand, it’s not an unexpected thing, but then on the other hand, it’s typical as well. I like how the author gives us danger in two different forms: the hounds and then the fire vampires that show up. You never know which one Lizzie is going to come across. The various dangers that she encounters push her to her limits, and it’s interesting to see how things turn out with each situation. While the focus of the story is the shade amulet, there isn’t any real intense drama leading up to the actual acquisition.
I would have liked some reflecting points in this story when the author touches on events that have transpired in the past. I will admit some mild disappointment that in The Shade Amulet, that there doesn’t appear to be anything truly crucial at this point. There isn’t any “if you don’t achieve this then it spells doom for all.” Typically, I like something to be a major motivating factor for the main character beyond her survival. Other than that there really isn’t anything that I don’t like about this story. In my opinion it flows well and kept me engaged from the beginning to the end. The book appears to be professionally edited as well.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I look forward to reading the next book in this series. I like that the author gives us a hint at the romance, but that the romance doesn’t take center stage of the story. This story has some well-placed surprises and twists. This is definitely a unique urban fantasy novel that I’m sure many will enjoy. Job well done to the author on this book.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by more than 0.50 of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

DNF

I was only a couple of chapters in and realised that this is a spin off book. Authors really need to note that in the blurb!
Most authors I read will give you the information you need in spin offs and not presume that you read the other series, this author does not.
She doesn't do enough world-building, I'm guessing on the assumption that you read the other series, but does give too much unneeded information on things that do not matter. Things that do, like being able to travel to other planets came completely out of the blue! Abel, the guy who she's supposed to be solving murders with, he's apparently from another planet.
A prologue would have been nice with a 'previously in MC's life' for those of us who had not read the previous series, because this book even so little into it, refers to stuff that I'm guessing happened in the previous series.

I quit a few pages after her friend turns up with a man, who tells her she's in danger because there's a prophecy about her, but he won't tell her what that is. No she has to go on a quest to be told....

This was not mentioned in the blurb of the book. I wanted the story in the blurb, which was why I chose to read the book. I don't care if the 'solve murders' happens later on, I don't want to read through her quest first.
I also am annoyed that I have to read the other series to hopefully get proper world-building so things make sense in this book... This is why I'm now going to avoid this author.

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: No

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

I received a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

When I first read the premise for this book, I assumed that it would be fine to read on it's own, even though I haven't read Andrea Pearson's earlier works. I was wrong. The Shade Amulet is set in the same world as The Mosaic Chronicles and since The Mosaic Chronicles came first, the details and specifics of the world are likely explained there. The Shade Amulet is written with the assumption that the reader has read The Mosaic Chronicles and so not only fails to adequately explain certain elements of the world to a reader who hasn't read The Mosaic Chronicles prior to reading The Shade Amulet, but also makes references to event which I assume occur in The Mosaic Chronicles. The combination of these things led to my being extremely confused and annoyed until I connected the dots. Had the information given about the book specified that this series occurs after The Mosaic Chronicles and that it's set in the same world, I would have gone in with a different mindset, or even read The Mosaic Chronicles first, but because I wasn't aware of this, I found I didn't enjoy the book all that much.

The utter lack of empathy I developed also annoyed me. I don't know if it's the writing or, again, because I haven't read the Mosaic Chronicles, but none of what anyone felt came across as genuine to me. Everything sort of felt like it was on the surface. Lizzie may have said that she felt a certain way about a certain person or situation, but I honestly failed to believe it. The disconnect I was feeling with the characters, situation, character relationships with each other, and everything else in between meant that I truly couldn't get lost in the story and swept up in the plot. I'm also disappointed to say that at no point was I unable to put it down; it's the kind of book that I could go for days without reading, no matter where I was up to in the story.

I probably would have enjoyed The Shade Amulet a lot more if I had read The Mosaic Chronicles first. I was initially intrigued by the premise and wanted to like it going into the book, but the disorienting start and continuous references to events which I had no knowledge of simply alienated me. In all honesty, I can't say whether or not I'll ever read the next book in the series, but I definitely won't continue the series until I've read The Mosaic Chronicles.

Meet Lizzie Ashton. She lives with her cat Sia (short for Siamese but pronounced see-ah) in Lehi City. She is an Arete (pronounced ar-reh-tay) which means that, like every other fourth child, she has special powers. But it wasn't until college that she found a use for her powers, something she is good at and that makes her feel useful. She now works as a Fire Impeder. She can control fire down to its individual molecules and stop sparks from igniting. That means she can keeps fires from being lit or from spreading, stop bombs from exploding and even keep guns from firing. It is difficult work and when she expends too much energy she cannot identify what she is touching.

Now she is faced with more horrors than bush fires or bombs. There are some ghoulish monsters in her home town and, according to some people, they are after Lizzie. There is talk of a prophecy about her being the only one who can destroy these creatures. Unfortunately, the more she learns about them the more danger she is in from them because they can sense her knowledge. Now she will have to travel a far way to search for the Shade Amulet, the only thing that can protect her and show her how to destroy these magical monsters before they find her.

This book is filled with adventure, thrills, danger, intrigue, battles and romance. I received a gift copy of the book from the author but this review is all mine and I say you will definitely enjoy this book! Happy Reading!

The Shade Amulet, the first book in the Koven Chronicles, follows Lizzie several years after the events in the Mosaic Chronicles series. This book can be read as a standalone but if you like to have the full backstory you may choose to read the Mosaic Chronicles first. Lizzie is a fire arete and as such she has chosen to use her powers to help the police and firefighters suppress fires and explosions. At night she uses her powers to fight evil (vampires, shifters, etc.) and she soon learns that it is prophesied that only she can stop the immortal Hounds of Tindalos. Unfortunately she needs the Shade Amulet to prevent a possible disastrous future and with the help of Abel, another arete, she sets off on the adventure of a lifetime to ensure that evil is kept at bay. This was a well written story with well developed and multidimensional characters, good pacing, and lots of action and intrigue. I would definitely recommend this book to urban fantasy readers and just fantasy readers in general who enjoy a good story with lots of action and adventure. This book will definitely have you looking forward to the next installment. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book was given to me for an honest review.

I actually quite enjoyed reading this book. From the start it was fast paced and interesting. I could tell from this book that the magic system must have come from a previous book or series, as it was explained it a lot of detail, but enough to understand how the elemental magic worked. I thought it was very interesting when an arete loses one of their sense after using to much magic, this makes sense since usually magic is a give and take.

I really liked reading about the mysterious creatures in this book and the writing kept me wanting to know more. I was basically glued to my kindle! I was very curious with Abel's character, he was mysterious and I wanted to know more about him! Can't wait to dive into book 2 to find out more about where this story is heading! I'm also looking forward to jumping into Pearson's Mosaic Chronicles to read more about Aretes and where it all started.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and kept wanting to turn the pages. If your into magic systems, elemental magic, fast-paced plots, definitely give this one a go!

Slow start, then an abrupt ending made this book fall short of its potential. I didn't feel a good connection with the MC. I felt as if there were descriptions that were unnecessary. However, I can still see the potential for a decent story here.

I do think it is a bit of a sick joke to have a Governor Boggs in Utah, especially with it being a predominantly LDS state. Seriously, historically Governor Boggs created an extermination order for those of the LDS faith in the 1800s, and to use the name either means the author is a sadist, creatively lacking on the names front, or just plain unaware, which I doubt.
It also felt like we were missing a great deal from either a previous book or a series. So much information is being told that leads the reader to believe something is missing. Which it is. After reading other reviews, I discovered this is not a truly stand-alone book. There is a whole other series that segues into this one. Frustrating. Could have used the proper background rather than smatterings of information.

For my clean readers: violence-murder, some descriptive gore. No language. Romance-kissing foreheads and hand holding.

The Shade Amulet is the first book in the new Koven Chronicles series. We met several of the characters during the Mosaic Chronicles series, with Lizzie's best friend Nicole starring in the lead role. Now it is Lizzie's turn.

I have read many of the books written by this author, and so I knew to expect the action and snarky replies. Add I was still surprised into laughing out loud in many spots.

Even if you've read all of the books in the Mosaic Chronicles, this story offers lots of fresh plot and character development. Lizzie was by no means a flat character in the Mosaic Chronicles, but we still learn a bag full of new information in this story. You do not need to have read the Mosaic Chronicles to enjoy this book - there is plenty of cohesive action and story line to follow if this is your first foray into this author's writings.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I voluntarily bought my own copy of this ebook to keep in my digital library.

I was given a copy of this book, ARC, in exchange for an honest review. This book is the first of the Koven Chronicles and states it is a standalone; however, it coincides with another series, Mosaic, and events in that series are mentioned throughout. Therefore, I recommend reading that series in advance of this.

Lizzie is a Fire Arete or Fire Impeder, a magical person who uses her abilities to stop negative events that start with a spark (think bombs and fires). Using magical abilities is not an unlimited source, use can result in exhaustion, loss of your senses and eventually permanent brain damage.

Lizzie's friend, Nicole, arrives in town with Alexander revealing a long hidden prophecy which has caused demons and creatures throughout the universe to descend on Lizzie's city. In order to protect herself and discover the prophecy Lizzie must travel to Mount Koven to retrieve the knowledge of the prophecy.

At Mount Koven Lizzie is told a visitor will bring her the Shade Amulet and with it the power to defeat the creatures invading earth.

The book sets up the beginning of her journey into this battle and the start of her learning with the Shade Amulet. The characters are intriguing and the story is a fast paced easy read. I look forward to the next book in this series!

Whenever I find out that I'm about to read a new Andrea Pearson book, I know that I can expect something full of action, great characters, awesome world building, and that I'm in the hands of a great storyteller. With Lizzie being a favorite character of mine from the Mosaic series, I was seriously looking forward to her own series. Mrs. Pearson not only met, but exceeded my expectations with this book, and I feel she is improving with each book she publishes.
For those who read Forsake, a highly suggested if not required read before this book as it sets in motion the events that do start to happen in this book many years earlier, we do see Alexander, and Lizzie finds out about the Hounds of Tindalos, and the fact that the majority of them want her dead pleases her not at all!
Lizzie's first person narrative, not Mrs. Pearson's usual style, adds so much to this book, and I feel it was a good choice.
Now I'm really looking forward to the rest of the Koven Chronicles, and to joining Lizzie and her friends, old and new, on this journey. However it goes, I know it'll be great!

Received from Author in exchange for honest review

The Shade Amulet is first book in Koven Chronicles. We follow Lizzy (she was Nicole best friends in Mosaic Chronicles). She is Fire Impender and work for police. She can stop bomb, guns from shooting and even stop natural fires.

Her simple life start to complicate, when she is called in to investigate strange murder. Because of the events in Mosaic Chronicles, strange creatures have come to Earth, including Hounds and Fire Vampires. She has to retrieve The Shade Amulet and master its power in order to be able to destroy Hounds, before they destroy the Earth.

It's good start to a new series, there is a lot of promise for new adventures and a lot of unanswered questions. The story is set in the same universe as Mosaic Chronicles. I really like the magical system in these stories.

You can read this one without reading Mosaic Chronicles first, but I would still recommend reading those books first.

The book is full of non stop action. I love the writing style in all of Andrea Pearson books. It just flows so nicely.

If you like fantasy, magic and adventure, you will like this book and series. The Shade Amulet is the first book in the Koven Chronicles series. You can read this book as a standalone, but it does set the stage for future books. There is violence and use of magic.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat all of that info here. The characters are well written and multidimensional. If you have read The Mosaic Chronicles series, then you are already familiar with Lizzie. Now we get to learn more of her story. The author does a good job of keeping a steady pace throughout the book to keep this reader interested. It keeps you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed in the pages ahead. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading future books in the Koven Chronicles series.

Plenty of action, magic and intrigue

I picked this book up from KU as soon as it came out. I have been following this author for awhile now. I have read most of her Mosaic Chronicles books but I must for-warn those who have not. This book contains some spoilers regarding Nicole and Austin. However, I was glad to read that Lizzie has gotten her own book series. She is a larger-than-life character and truly deserves the attention. The action in this story begins within the first few pages. From then on it is intrigue and action interspersed throughout the book. The reader also sees the possibility of some romance for Lizzie (Finally! I hope, I hope!). This book is a wonderful continuation of Lizzie’s story and I will definitely be following through with the rest of this series.

The Shade Amulet is the first book in the new Koven Chronicles series by Andrea Pearson. It introduces Lizzie Ashton, who is able to use her magic to impede fire. In the book, she is given a new task - to destroy evil hounds that are appearing on Earth and killing people.

I liked the book, but it's really more of a set-up book than anything. Several storylines are introduced, and are followed, but there is only a partial conclusion to the main storyline. I would definitely read the next book in the series if I had the chance, in order to find out if the romantic relationships are resolved and to also find out if Lizzie becomes more proficient in destroying the evil demons she is pitted against.

I requested a copy of this book from the author with the intention of giving an honest review. This review reflects my opinion about the book and is in no way influenced by outside forces.

I love Andrea Pearson’s books. Her Mosaic Chronicles series is one of my favorites and this book is directly liked to it because the heroine here, Lizzy, is a (much liked by me l) secondary character in that series, is was her friend Nicole. Readers this get the benefit of the wonderful works built for that series while getting an entirely different perspective. While reading the Mosaic Chronicles does actually enhance this novel, Lizzy’s story can be read as a total standalone so newcomers will not feel as if they’re joining a story after it started. I truly enjoyed this novel with its action and romance, unexpected twists and turns, and wonderful cast of characters. I’m looking forward to book 2 and, in the meantime, highly recommend this book.

To be honest, I didn't want to read this book as it is an offshoot of another series and I usually do not like that. However, I promised and the author is great so I read it. I am so very glad I did read this book. It started off really good and ended great. While this book focuses on Lizzie, some old friends of books past do show up in cameo appearances. Nonstop action leads to a well written cliffhanger. Still, everyone ends on a healthy note. LOL. I can't wait to read the next one. This is a clean read with no swearing and the only PDAs are a kiss on the forehead and a tiny bit of hand holding. Great for teens and adults alike. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I received this book through ARC to review. The plot description sounded interesting and right up my alley.
I was quite disappointed to read this book. I found the writing rushed and lacked depth. There was more description given to non important aspects of the story, little things like Abel being left handed or the distance between a crack in the road, I waited to see if that information would play a part but it was just some of the many random facts thrown in. However the gritty part of the story, action scenes, were rushed and lacked detail to fully absorb what was happening.
I also figured out half way into the book this is a spin off from another series and there was references to those books but no information given, so I had no idea what the characters were talking about.

An amazing read that has you hooked from the very first chapter. Andrea Pearson gives us a strong, magical, determined heroine in Lizzie and a wonderful cast of supporting characters (with a love triangle that keeps you changing your mind every other chapter lol). Lizzie finds that she is part of a prophecy, one that is important to the safety of not only herself, but the world around her. She does not shy away from this prophecy, but faces it full on. Pearson creates a world that does not know of all the dangers that are present as Lizzie is unaware of all the powers she is to possess. As these powers begin to emerge, I can't wait to see where it takes our heroine and her two love interests.

Magic, dogs, vampires and one to fight them?

A really good read. A bit slow to start but soon picked up pace. She has the power to put out sparks. Not something that comes with a lot of power but something the police can use. Consequently she has been working with the police for sometime. However when she is told she has to go and find a magical amulet and is the one by prophecy to use it, she is bewildered. However curbing her natural hesitation she goes. Throw in shades, a magical library, fire vampires (who burn their victims are drinking), demon dogs and two men who would be willing to be her partner into a read that takes you onto a journey where the everyday humdrum meets the fantastic. The characters are okay and should get better with more books.

The Shade Amulet is the first book in Andrea Pearson’s Koven Chronicles Series. This is the first book that I have read by Andrea Pearson and I thoroughly enjoyed myself!
Lizzie, the main character is a Fire Impeder (specialized skill in stopping fire magically) who works with Emergency Services to make her corner of the world a safer place.
Lizzie soon learns that there are creatures hunting her, and she teams up with an old friend, Abel to hunt them down. The chemistry between Lizzie and Abel is great! Abel is a fairly complex character that leaves you guessing and I really felt drawn to him.
I was so disappointed when the book ended! I really wanted to keep reading more and more!

Amazing story!
From the very beginning the book had me captured. I couldn't put it down and felt like I had lost a part of myself when I had to. The book over finished way before I was ready for it to be.

I came across Andrea Pearson in the Mosaic Chronicles books. I have thoroughly enjoyed every book of her's that I have ever read and when I found out about The Shade Amulet series I knew I had to get my hands on the books.

After subscribing to Andrea Pearson's newsletter, I received a free copy of this book and I have volunteered to leave a review on the book. This review (I hope) will encourage someone out there to purchase and read her books. You won't regret it!

I REALLY enjoyed this story by Andrea Pearson. I was hurrying to read it and get it done in time to post my review but then when I realized I was almost finished I was like "NOOOOOOOO!!!!" I was so sad to finish it as I was having such a GREAT time reading it! And now I have to wait for the next book in the series... sigh... But seriously this is such a FUN read full of adventure, humor, magic and a touch of romance. ;)

Absolutely loved this book!

As this was the first book I had ever read from this author, I had no idea what to expect. The first chapter had me hooked. I love her writing style. She breathes new life into old legends such as vampires, shades, and elementals. Her take on them is different enough to keep my attention. Her character building is wonderfully done. They are flawed and relatable, yet still heroic....mostly. But, they still manage to keep enough mystery to make you want the next book already. Fascinated to see where the story goes next, how they'll grow, and how their various relationships and interactions proceed. Well done Ms. Pearson, very well done.
