A fierce survivor and a fearless FBI agent battle a copycat serial killer in a gripping thriller from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert.

When a copycat killer targets Lei and Emma, FBI Agent Dante Young is put in charge of anticipating the sociopath’s every move. But what he doesn’t expect is his immediate and overpowering attraction to Lei. The Surviving Girls
was gruesome and thrilling, but very implausible in parts.

The romance was sudden and underwhelming but didn’t take up a large part of the story. The fact that Dante was so unfocused because of his attraction was a little disappointing.

I will say the story kept my interest, kept me turning pages even if parts were unbelievable to me.

A copy was kindly provided by Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly, this cover is beautiful, but it's missing something very, very important. I'm choosing to believe there's sexy, topless FBI agent in that house. ;)

I might have a bad track record with men but my goodness, reading about poor Lei and her ex-boyfriend made me feel like my mistakes weren't so bad.

This was a good story. There was drama and action and angst. At the beginning of the book, we're introduced to Lei and Emma who survived a massacre. 12 years ago Lei's boyfriend murdered 21 of their sorority sisters. Surviving something like that is bound to leave scars. The two of them keep people at a distance and realize they can't count on anyone but each other.

There were a lot of little things I appreciated about this book:

Emma is agoraphobic, she refuses to leave her home choosing instead to experience the world through her computer. Although this was a small part of the story, I think this is the first book I've read that dealt with the disorder. I don't know enough about it to say whether it was realistic or not but it was unique and I appreciated that.

At one point an FBI agent suggests the serial killer may be female. This made me super happy because women are often depicted as delicate little flowers who aren't capable of hurting anyone. I thought it was neat to even offer it as a possibility.

Lei has a cadaver dog, Saul. The dog is a consistent presence in the book. As an animal lover, this made me very happy.

And now for one of my biggest pet peeves EVER! The reason I so rarely read these so-called "romantic thriller" titles.
This wasn't a romance. I didn't fall in love with Dalton, I didn't see him as my book-boyfriend. He felt more like an overprotective cousin. We have a couple chapters of annoying insta-obsession (it's worse than insta-love), one or two kisses, some intense hand-holding, and a scene where they declare their interest in each other. But, nothing that screamed romance or even a relationship.

It felt almost like a bait and switch. Would I have even looked at this book without the promise of a love story? No, of course not and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. However, I'm sure there are just as many people who avoided this book because they didn't want a love story.

Overall, The Surviving Girls was a good thriller. If I was in the market for a thriller, I'd be giving it 5 stars. However, I was promised a romantic thriller. Since I only got half of what I was promised I had to take away half the stars. Now, I absolutely adore when animals are prominent characters in the book, so I gave this book an extra star for so consistently including Saul.

First thoughts after reading.

Goes off to find info on serial killers.

There are 25-50 active serial killers in the US at any given moment. Right now.

Phew, good I don’t live in the US.

But…

Currently in Germany there are 8 active serial killers. Alright so I know I’m not exactly doomed and I am more likely to get run over by a bus. Yet with that I am repelled and fascinated all at the same time. My paranoia is currently on high speed.

The Surviving Girls is exactly what I needed to give me some excitement.

The Characters & Chemistry

Lei is coping with her life after surviving a serial killer, she takes the blame and is now trying to even the balance as having one of the very few cadaver dogs she is of the opinion that no one should stay missing forever.  I agree.

Lei runs head first into trouble to deal with her fear but it will be controlling that fear that she will need to have tight control on her fear. Lei is a strong heroine with a spine of steel, her past could have been her ruin but she got up and fought and is still fighting. She is no damsel in distress but knows when to ask for help, has a certain vulnerability to her and isn’t TSTL. I repeat she isn’t TSTL.

Dante & his partner Clarke are called to a murder in Seattle where certain similarities arise with an older case. Dante is cool and reserved and comes across as being too cold. He comes from money and has always stuck out within the FBI. I liked Dante more than I liked Lei but I always seem to like the Hero more. Dante is strong, silent type and goes above and beyond for Lei & Emma.

There is good underlying chemistry between Lei & Dante. They make out a couple of times but in the face of danger they don’t get to smexy times which you know actually makes sense. How many suspense books have you read where they have time to have sex although they are on the run from a serial killer etc?

The Writing & Plot.

Lei & Emma are the two surviving girls of the Sorority Row Killer that happened about twelve years ago. They are co-dependent on one another, they bonded on a truly awful experience. And have been inseparable ever since. Especially when no one believed them when they knew exactly who the killer was. They used to be happy and normal. But to their family and friends they don’t fit into that box anymore. So they take a different route and find missing people.

But their fort and bubble are about to be burst. A new set of serial murders similar to the others but not quite has everyone reeling. The Seattle police, the BAU, Lei & Emma are always three steps behind the serial killer.

For a couple of pages I had an inkling of what and where the twist was going but I chucked my theory out the window but damn I was so close. But there is one thing I didn’t take into account. My lips are sealed, it is for you to read the book and find out.

The author gives a suspenseful, nail biting read full of emotions. It has highs and lows where the characters feel guilt, terror and fear. I can’t give it the full 5 stars as although it is action packed, pace wise it is a tad drawn out. IMO at least.

The Verdict.

I love the Hidden Sins series and can only recommend all three books.

Lei knows evil, intimately unfortunately, and it's left a permanent mark on her in many ways. It shaped the woman she became. Twelve years ago, Lei and her friend, Emma, were the only survivors of the Sorority Row Murders. While she's thankful she and Emma survived, they mourn every day for the twenty-one that didn't. Lei and Emma have both used their second chance to help others. But Lei will never be able to forget those who died, nor the fact that the killer was her boyfriend. He's out of her life for good now, and in prison where he belongs, but that experience taught her a valuable lesson...never to trust again.

But it seems not everyone wants to forget the killer. In fact, someone is honoring him in their own sick and twisted way by copying his crimes, which of course brings the always hated attention back to Lei and Emma.

Dante, an FBI agent, is assigned the case along with his partner. Their job is to not only find the killer and stop him, but in order to do that, they must get inside his head, anticipate his every move. However, he could've never seen his instant attraction to Lei coming.

While working the case, Dante and Lei grow closer with every encounter, every touch, their mutual desire too powerful to even think of denying. But each piece of information draws to an outcome that becomes terrifying as answers are given while more questions are revealed at the same time.

Who wants to pick up where the original killer left off? Why? Are Lei and Emma the reason? Does the copycat feel the Sorority Killer's mission was left unfinished? Can Dante keep his mind focused on finding the culprit while protecting Lei and Emma? Or will his love for Lei distract him and allow the copycat to complete his goal? Will Lei ever find peace with her past? Or will it continue to haunt her present and destroy any chance of a future with Dante? Is a HEA possible?

One-click now and follow along as two people are brought together by tragedy as one investigates the killer and the other can give personal insight into the previous killer's mind.

WOW!! This story is packed with intrigue, deception, puzzles, danger, threats and, of course, murders. It is twelve years since Lei Zhang and Emma Nilsson were the only survivors from the Sorority Row murders that resulted in twenty one other people in the same sorority being killed. They have both obviously been affected by the experience and are a mutual support team. Now Emma is a skilled computer hacker and researcher working with Lei to help find the bodies of people who are missing believed murdered. Both have working dogs - Lei's is specially trained to search for cadavers . . . .

When a copycat killer starts targeting other sorority women and sending messages to Lei and Emma FBI agent Dante Young is tasked with arresting the perpetrator and protecting the two young women. He is the strong, silent type, born to wealthy parents who don't support his choice of job. He keeps himself to himself, rarely opening up, but Lei soon breaks down his barriers as attraction builds between the two. However, with someone targeting her and her friend, can they remain the surviving girls or will the killer succeed in ending their lives?

This is a fast paced thriller that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat! It has plenty of twists, turns, misdirection and secrets that keep you guessing to the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and didn't want to put it down till I'd finished it. I've enjoyed every book in this series, each of which works as a standalone, and have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone who enjoys thrilling, suspense filled stories.

I requested and was given a copy of this novel, via NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

ARC received for an honest review

This book! I finished reading The Surviving Girls last night, and my heart is still racing.

Lei and Emma's story is one that will have you looking over your shoulder, wondering at every bump in the night and give you hyper-alert senses.

Their story is not a fun one - the past decade has been a world of horrors, but as a reader you can't help but cheer that they are finally starting to move on in life - as much as they can.

But boy, Ms Robert really has ratcheted up the evil that is the killer in The Surviving Girls. He is a sick f^*k , a complete psychopath.

Every turn of the page I had my heart in my throat. Who is this killer? Who can you trust? Is everyone who they say they are.

I won't lie, I had a couple of people I thought were the killer as I read, however nothing was revealed until Ms Robert really had me worked up.

Even writing this review I am getting all anxious for the characters again - well played Ms Robert!

I don't want to give anything away, but boy this one had me on the edge of my seat.

Can't wait t see what Ms Robert brings us next.

This is my first book by this author, Katee Robert. Even though this is the 3rd book in this series, I don’t think I missed anything buy not reading the other 2 books first. I liked the storyline and it kept me guessing till the end. It grabbed me from the first page but then it started to drag a little and I found myself skimming through pages. Overall, I give it 3 stars. Thanks to the publisher and a NetGalley for letting me review this book early. All opinions expressed are my own.

Boy, the author stepped up her game with the killer in this one. I thought the last one was depraved but killing 21 in one night – you sir win the sick and twisted killer of year..

Could you image – your whole sorority, except for your best friend who had a front row seat to the massacre, all raped and killed while you were trapped in a room able to hear them all dying.. And if that wasn't enough to send you over the edge to loonyville – they were all murdered by your boyfriend at the time.

Book picks up 12 years later. The killer was convicted and has been serving many life sentences in jail. Lei and her best friend Emma moved from California to Washington to get away from the horrors of their pasts. Problem is its left Emma unable to leave the house and on an emotional tightrope and Lei now a must stronger woman but yet she suffers from guilt and her own form of PTSD. They live in a heavily guarded house far from any big cities and Lei now runs a cadaver search team with her dog Saul and Emma is her researcher who has also grown proficient in hacking. Their past along with all the emotional baggage that brings comes back with a vengeance when a group of college girls are murder in the same fashion as the ones 12 years ago. The killer is even leaving clues at the scenes that only the original killer could have known.. But how can this be when that killer is locked up???????

FBI BAU boss Britton Washington assigns Dante Yong and Clarke Rowan to the case after realizing the similarities between the two cases. These two couldn't be more opposite of each other but sure made for some amusing conversations. Dante is immediately taken with Lei when he meets her but knows with the unpredictability of the killer they are chasing and now trying to protect Lei and Emma from him needs to lock that down so he can keep everyone alive.

This was a fast paced thriller that kept you on your toes wondering what was going on and also kept you on the edge of your seat wondering what the killer was going to do next. Really enjoyed this one..

What do you do when history repeats itself, particularly if there’s a past you’d rather move on from, but can’t seem to? Katee Robert puts forward a rather chilling case where her protagonists struggle to get free of the nightmare they endured in college years ago only to find themselves embroiled in it once more.

‘The Surviving Girls’ was a start-stop affair for me; I took an extraordinarily long time with it which meant that I could walk away and return without difficulty. It wasn’t really a bad read; rather it was just a mediocre one somehow, particularly where the intervention of the FBI brought a half-hearted romance element (felt like it went nowhere) into the plot and a weird twist towards the end that kept me sceptical. In fact, the number of revelations after the number of strings dangled felt like an abrupt closure with a huge dose of implausibility.

I’m guessing that the typical murder mystery has certain traits or tells when it comes to maintaining reader engagement: red-herrings, hooks, claustrophobia, use of atmosphere and so on…it’s what I do tend to look for as well and by and large, Robert does try to keep it fresh. Yet the second-half of the book seemed to go round and round as the POVs shift between Emma and Lei and sometimes Dante while staying firmly rooted the predominant issue of coping after trauma. As a result, ‘The Surviving Girls’ ended on a rather flat note after Robert’s initial build-up. I don’t dislike it, but it isn’t one that I’d particularly remember.

The Surviving Girls was an exciting, fast-paced read with an interesting plot and a fantastic set of characters.

Twelve years ago Lei Zhang and Emma Nilsson were the only survivors of the Sorority Row Murders that left twenty-one girls dead. While Lei and Emma made it out with their lives, the trauma of that night has never left them. Now Lei and Emma run a search and rescue group that aims to find other victims and give their families closure. When a new set of murders occur with startling similarities to the Sorority Row Murders, Lei and Emma are pulled back into a killer’s twisted game. With the FBI on the case, it’s just a matter of time until the killer is caught or Lei and Emma wind up dead.

Lei and Emma both coped with the trauma of that night twelve years ago in different ways, but one thing they both agree on is that it made their friendship stronger. Lei is the more direct of the two and spends a lot of time caring for Emma despite Lei being just as messed up. Lei is the on the ground part of their search and rescue business with her dog Saul. Emma is agoraphobic and is obsessed with the security of their home and ensuring nothing bad ever happens to them again. She has also become a whiz on the computer and created a computer program that assists Lei with her searches in the field.

There are two FBI agents assigned to the copycat case, Dante and Clarke, and I felt the two worked well together with their differing styles. Clarke is much more direct and in your face while Dante comes across as more laid back and by the book. The romance that develops between Dante and Lei felt like it came out of nowhere, but I wasn’t bothered by it. It added some nice moments to a few scenes while not detracting from the suspense storyline.

The copycat killings and the hunt for the killer were a fantastic suspense storyline that I enjoyed quite a bit. The author does a great job showing how sadistic the killer can be while pulling you in and making you want to know more. There was a surprising amount of detail of the murders but it never felt overly graphic or gratuitous. The FBI involvement in the case felt well done but for me I found the investigating Lei and Emma were doing to be more interesting. The ending was quite unexpected and I never would have guessed the path the author chose to take.

The Surviving Girls was the first book I’ve read from this author and I will absolutely pick up more books from her in the future. I definitely want to read the first two books in the Hidden Sins series.

Wanna know what would have made me give 5 stars to this book instead of 3? If the label romance wasn't on this book. There is no real romance in this story, only some pieces that were thrown into it and I am not sure that we were supposed to fall for that. Lei and Declan could have gone each to their way and I would have been completely fine with that. There wasn't enough relationship material for these two. The "romance" killed a book that was good. We could have been fine without it and that's even a bigger disappointment because I am a fan of Katee Robert and she writes good romance books.

The twist on the killers identity was good and I enjoyed the suspence side of the book, which is the sole reason I am recommending it. Don't try to go for the romance and only have eyes on the killer. Emma seemed like a character whose story I might enjoy reading and I hope she will get a book and some kind of happy ending. Maybe she already did by the end of this book, now that I think about it. The book is a stand-alone, but you could also read the other books in the series.

The Surviving Girls was an edge of the seat, nail biting type of read. I enjoyed it very much especially the way it all unfolded. Although the romance took a back seat to the suspense I still enjoyed that aspect of the story. I think the author did a great job crafting this story. I definitely recommend it suspense and thriller fans.

Really loved it, the dynamics between the characters, how the relationship between the two girls evolved and developed as both survivors of a massacre.
The romance was good but it was superficial, really wanted more but it was realistic.
perfect for the month of october ^^
gonna start this series from the start (each book is a standalone in it's own but there is some overlap of characters)

Lei Zhang and Emma Nilsson were the only survivors of a brutal attack that took the lives of twenty one of their sorority sisters. It’s been twelve years since the Sorority Row Murders and both women still feel the after effects of the trauma. Lei feels extra guilty as she was dating Travis Berkley, the man sent to prison for the murders. Emma never leaves the home she shares with Lei in Stillwater, Washington. She works at home in the tech industry working with grids and hacking. Emma and her cadaver dog, Saul search and find victims, bringing closure to families who have lost a loved one.

When a new set of murders pops up that is eerily similar to the Sorority Row Murders, FBI Agents Dante Young and Clarke Rowan are assigned the case which leads them to seek out the help of Lei and Emma who seem to have caught the eye of a copycat killer. Travis is still in prison, so it could not be him. Will they be able to catch a killer before he makes Lei and Emma his next victims?

The Surviving Girls is just one of those stories that can easily make your skin crawl. The creepiness factor had me pretty shaken and scared, probably due to the fact that I read this book in the wee hours of the morning. I kept thinking someone was looking in my window or at my back door. For a while, I didn’t even want to leave my room! There is one scene in particular that freaked me out the most and it was the tap, tap, tap on the door scene. OMG! I kept looking over my shoulder afraid someone was going to jump out behind me! Katee Robert sure knows how to take it up a notch in the “scare me senseless” category. Well done, I have not been this freaked out from a book in a long long time.

The plot moves at a relatively fast pace with a lot of action. Things get going right from the start and I didn’t find any place that ever lagged. The suspense surrounding the serial killer really kept me guessing and going back and forth between a few characters and to be honest, I really couldn’t figure out who was behind the new killings.

Character development really shined in this story. Lei and Emma have been through so much pain and suffering, but they did not let their past rule them. Were they still fearful? Yes, but they also became kind of badass as well. They learned how to take care of themselves and one another and to not rely on anyone for protection. They were by far my favorite characters in the story

The romance takes second fiddle to the suspense. The main story is the serial murders taking place and trying to catch the unsub. I did feel a connection between Lei and Dante and although it was not explored deeper, I felt it worked well given the storyline.

If you like hair-raising suspense, strong female characters, and a serial killer you never want to hear knocking on your door, then pick up a copy of The Surviving Girls, you will be in for one hell of a ride. It is well worth five stars.

Can we say that my anxiety level was raised a few notches while reading this one?

I mean, I’m good at being aware of my surroundings and all that, but the need to ensure that everything was on lockdown in my home and considering taking some self defense classes and possibly buying a taser were all things that were on a loop in my head with this one because the creeped out feelings were oh so real.

Lei was a pretty kickass woman. I had to admire her determination to live, even as she set her own parameters for what her definition of living was. But what I found that I really liked about her was her honesty, not only with others but also herself. Yes, there were somethings that she chose to push to the side, and for good reason, but in the end she came clean in one way or another.

And then there is Dante. He’s all kinds of gentlemanly goodness, which I kind of swooned over, and though his protective alpha instincts push at him, he is able to set them aside and recognize a person’s strengths and weaknesses.

While this book falls under the romantic suspense category, it really is more mystery/suspense with a dash of romance. What Dante and Lei have is more of a simmer. They are attracted to each other, they have that pull towards each other and through this crazy situation find that they like each other, but there isn’t much hot and heavy and I actually love that things didn’t progress beyond that. The situation they are in and the speed at which things happen would have made it...weird, well, weird than they were. But they do connect and I loved them together and where they ended up when everything was said and done was perfect.

Now for the whole mystery/suspense crazyness. This one definitely got to me on a lot of levels, one of which was the setting ~ I live in Western Washington and quite a few places mentioned are ones that I am frequently in, so, Hello to being a little more aware than normal. But that uneasy feeling only goes to show how well written this book was. I did try to figure things out on my own and I hit at least one on the head, but there were some great twists tossed in that made it a lot of fun to watch as all the pieces fell into place. Clarke, Emma and Tucker were great characters and I’m crossing my toes that we’ll see a couple of them in the future, but Britton is still my fav character. He’s an enigma that I want to know more about, but I don’t want to actually crack into just yet. One day. But until then, I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

The book begins with Lei Zhang and her friend Emma Nilsson reliving their worst nightmare. They were the only 2 to survive the Sorority Row Murders that left 21 other girls dead at the end of the night. They find out that it appears that 3 other girls were murdered in a similar style to Travis. Lei and Emma have both been dealing with their feelings from that night in different ways. Emma has become a virtual recluse and Lei has begun a cadaver rescue and/or find operation. Both of them have now devoted their lives to helping victims or their families find closure.

When the killer leaves them several calling cards and lets it be known that they are now in his sights, both of them find themselves being surrounded by the local police and FBI. Dante Young is one of the FBI agents assigned to the case, along with his partner, Clark, who is a female agent with a huge chip on her shoulder. Dante finds himself drawn to Lei and does his best to try and stay professional. Lei has had bad luck with men in her life and has no interest in a romance. She is focused on her new profession and has no time in her life for more.

The killer goes out of his way to get the girls feeling isolated and afraid. Dante finds himself pulled in different directions. The killer appears to have been planning his moves well in advance and Dante feels that he is playing catch-up instead of getting ahead of him. You will have to read the book to find out what happens, but it was well worth the reading time for me.

The book had several twists and turns that were quite interesting. There were a few questions that I still had at the end, but overall was a good read. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.

If you’re coming into this book looking for a conventional romantic suspense read, you might want to have a rethink. I’d describe this more as a crime thriller with a side of romance, and it contains some much heavier themes than a typical romantic suspense.

The surviving girls of the title are Lei and Emma, the only survivors of a sorority house massacre twelve years before the story is set. Best friends, they live a pretty co-dependent life, sharing a fortresslike house where agoraphobic Emma has become a tech expert helping solve crimes and Lei, along with her trained cadaver dog Saul, search for victims of crime. Though they believe the killer to be safely behind bars, a copycat killing in Seattle brings the FBI to their door and old fears resurface again.

Lei is the primary protagonist of the novel, and this is very much her story, from her survivor’s guilt and PTSD to her determination never to let anyone suffer as she did again. Dante, her love interest, is an FBI agent assigned to the case, and while the two of the do their level best to be professional it’s quite simply a case of powerful chemistry between them which they find hard to ignore.

The reason why this book may feel a bit ‘too much’ for some romantic suspense readers is that the crimes are described in fairly graphic detail and there is a fair bit of delving into the mind of the killer and the troubled psyches of both Lei and Emma. I love crime fiction and suspense thrillers, and I don’t have any trauma triggers, so I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I would advise to read with care if some of the things described in this review might trouble you.

This is a wonderful, thoroughly absorbing read and I’d definitely give it five stars.

Not believable

The Surviving Girls is the third book in the Hidden Sins series and it’s the weakest of the stories. The reason being the plot for me had too many holes in it. The first being that a woman locked in her room while her friends were being killed, her twenty friends, doesn’t jump out the window to escape or get help with the first scream. Wow! Then you have twenty one sorority sisters who make to attempt to rush the killer and allow themselves to be slaughtered one by one. Yes herd mentality does exist but not one of the girls was an alpha female? The murders where committed with knives so again, killer could have been rushed. 21-1 odds. Second the two survivors are twelve years out and take super precautions, but again lots of plot holes, as they have dogs who don’t alert to anything. Again WOW. Guess yappy little dogs would be better.

There is a minor romance, if the sex happens it’s off page. I don’t know why the romance was needed as it seemed dull.

Now to the writing, the writing is very good, and I truly enjoy Roberts books, but the plot holes brought the review stars down. Yes I can suspend belief just not this much.
I listened to the audiobook and the performance was spot on. I also borrowed the written book via kindle unlimited. I do intend to continue with the series are the authors first two books did set a good precedent for her writing.

This is a must read summer read!!

Katee Robert has the ability to bring readers to their knees with the action back thriller The Surviving Girls. I couldn't put this book down the story is perfectly placed so that readers will not be able to put the book down. The twist and turns are easy enough to figure out but the adventure is and story telling will keep reads from putting down the story.

The author Katee Roberts is able to have readers sympathize with the women as the try hard to more on from the past creating a future they thought wasn't possible.

Lei is strong character who readers will be able to latch on to as she tries to figure out what happened to her and Emma's life.

The author gives every characters purpose in the story and no one is wasted. The story lines move quickly as they beginning to figure out who the killer or killers are.

I love this story. I found myself reading it in the car while waiting in the school pick up line, making dinner and waiting for dance to end. I couldn't put this book down.

If you haven't head the other Hidden Sin series do not worry they are all stand alone novels. Each one better than the last.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher Montlake Romance for the advance copy Katee Roberts The Surviving Girls.

ARC Review

If this book focused exclusively on the mystery aspect of the story, this would be a four star book. As it is, the implausibility of the relationship between Dante, the FBI agent, and the key witness in an investigation, Lei, is almost distracting. It is a shame because the suspense parts has lots of great twists and turns. I would say, just ignore the romance, but the author spends a considerable amount of time trying to justify the warp speed insta-love. Now, I'm not a huge fan of insta-love, but it's often unavoidable in many stories, however, when the hero and heroine barely spend any time together and the attraction takes place in a compacted space...it's almost unbelievable.

First let me say that this book and the two previous novels are a true testament that Katee can write anything. Mystery and suspense to raw, sexy romance she just nails it every single time.
This book was so twisted and a little different than the two previous suspense books.

Lei and her friend Emma are the sole survivors of a mass murder in a sorority house backing California while they were in college. The killer who was a privileged, all around good guy and surely his families money would get him off, but not so in this case. As the evidence built, he was convicted and now sits in jail.

The two girls now live in seclusion, armed to the teeth and have the latest technology to keep their property safe, free from intruders and Emma who is a tech geek spends her time monitoring the cameras and all the safety devices in place and when I say safety devices, there are a multitude.
This all comes crashing down when 3 girls are murdered in Seattle, near where they now lives with a semi copy cat likeness. The Feds are brought in, Lei is still in contact with their BAU specialist. Two agents are sent, Dante who takes an immediate liking to Lei and Moore a sassy female agent. Working along side local law enforcement who are handicapped by multiple things frustrates the two BAU agents and they're having a hard time making headway. Meanwhile Lei who is now known for her ability with her cadaver dog is working. Emma has a dog as well who is more of a service dog, but smart nonetheless. Lei's dog is amazing and really adds to the story. After the first murders the girls get a package on their doorstep. First clue and scares Emma because someone bypassed her security.
The story unfolds from there and the mystery just keeps getting more and more twisted along with Dante's feelings for Lei. The twists and turns just kept coming and this one is a real page turner.
The end is well.... it's a must read. Absolutely a must read.

REVIEW: 3.75 stars--THE SURVIVING GIRLS is the third instalment in Katee Robert’s contemporary, adult HIDDEN SINs romantic, suspense series. This is FBI agent Dante Young, and Lei Zhang’s story line. THE SURVIVING GIRLS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. There are no apparent connections to the previous instalments.

NOTE: Due to the story line content, there may be some triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from several third person perspectives including Dante and Lei THE SURVIVING GIRLS follows the hunt for a serial killer. Twelve years earlier Lei Zhang, and Emma Nilsson were the lone survivors of the Sorority Row Murders but survivors who continue to struggle with PTSD and panic attacks. Living together, off the grid, Lei and Emma hoped to remain out of the public eye but a copycat killer pulls our heroine back into the game as he pointedly targets Lei and Emma with every kill, and threatening call. Enter FBI agent Dante Young, a man whose job it is to take down a killer but a killer who is supposedly serving a life-sentence in prison. What ensues is the search for the killer, and the emotional fall-out as a psychopathic mind continues to taunt Emma and Lei.

FBI agent Dante Young takes an immediate liking to our story line heroine. Lei Zhang is a feisty woman who has suffered at the hands of her former boyfriend, a man who turned serial killer in the blink of an eye. As Dante battles his attraction to Lei, Lei knows it is only a matter of time before her past catches up, and destroys her life, once again. Lei and Emma’s co-dependency upon one another is a psychiatrist’s nightmare, and yet with all of their precautions against an inevitable attack, someone, someway, the evil gets through.

THE SURVIVING GIRLS is not a story of romantic suspense; in fact there is limited romance as our couple keep one another at arm’s length, considering the circumstances of which they are now involved. Katee Robert pulls the reader into a thrilling and suspenseful tale of abduction and murder; a copycat killer who has been stalking our heroine for close to twelve years.

The world building looks at Emma and Lei twelve years after Lei’s boyfriend mutilated and murdered twenty-one of their sorority sisters. As a copycat killer begins to reimagine the murders, the FBI opens a different line of thinking as they consider the possibility of the how and why.

I had a couple of issues with believability. There were some revelations that came out of left field, but such is the nature of a fictional story line.

Katee Robert - you have outdone yourself with this book in this series. This is my favorite book so far in this series. I couldn't stop reading (while I was awake). Hell, my brain even had me dreaming of this book.

The Surviving Girls gave me chills at so many points in this book - it was written that damn good. I got this sense that I was right there with these characters as this unwound this twisted path they were thrown onto.

I won't give any details because you need to read this one blind (aside from the blurb). Lei and Emma survived that same brutal killings their friends unfortunately didn't. But they both have moved on in different ways, but together.

But when a copycat killer starts things back up, they are thrown back into the thick of things. And even though it's been over 10 years since they went through that whole ordeal, everything comes rushing back to them.

Katee wrote a very strong and intriguing plot. This book moves at the perfect pace; while everything may only happen in a few days time, it all makes sense and never feels rushed in any way.

The twists and turns are brought about very cleverly and she leaves just enough bread crumbs to string you along. I have so many different ideas as to who, what, why, how things happened. While I was right on one thing, it was how it played out that I was totally baffled on.

Bravo Katee for writing another amazing suspenseful read. You have this knack for writing books that keep your readers engaged and immensely emerged in the story.

If you haven't read any of Katee's books yet, I highly recommend giving this series a go!

Side Note - let me clarify something on all these books and it's something that I have come to realize after now reading the third book. These books are classified as romantic suspense but there is very little romance in them; however due to the fact that there is some romance in them and due to standards, it can't be listed as just a suspense/thriller. So please do not go into these books hoping for a lot of romance - it is definitely a subplot that is not really developed too much in the book, which I find to a be a great thing. The suspense and thrill are what really drives these books home.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
This is not a book to read while home alone! Twelve years after surviving a serial killer’s rampage that took the lives of twenty-one sorority sisters, Lei and Emma live in a self-made fortress in the Washington woods. The women’s world is shaken for a second time when the original murders are recreated and the killer starts playing twisted games with their minds.

The investigation is led by FBI BAU agents Dante and Clarke. I liked that I initially suspected everyone except for Emma and Lei and I liked that this is a story where I was able to piece together clues alongside the characters – though it did annoy me that I guessed the murderer’s identity too early. I also liked the three strong women at the heart of this book. Lei and Emma use their skills to stay ahead of the murderer and Dante’s partner, Clarke, is wonderfully fierce and unpredictable.

A romance runs alongside the investigation as Dante and Lei fight their attraction to each other. For me, the romance is the only part of this book that doesn’t work. Lei is too much of a professional and too much of a badass for me to believe that she’d ever allow a romance to compromise her safety.

This is a scary story. It moves fast, and I enjoyed the twists and turns that kept me guessing. There are elements of horror here – Emma and Lei are stalked, teased, and taunted in a way that had me jumpy and properly terrified at times. I really enjoyed this book, but it would be best read in bright sunshine in a heavily populated space.

HOLY COW!!!!! This book is just amazing! Absolutely amazing!

For starters, it makes you think about what happens to survivors of mass tragedies. Especially in light of all the school shootings and attacks going on in the world today. This book gives us a look at what happens to those who do survive. How do you move past watching 21 of your sorority sisters die? How do you move past the guilt that you were the one who let the killer into the house that night.

Lei and Emma are....broken after surviving what they did. They survived and adapted to life in their own separate but dependent ways. But they're living their life...until a blast from the past shows up on their doorstep targeting them.

While reading the book, you think you know what's going on and what the end is going to be but just like that you realize you have no idea what's going on afterall. It takes an amazing author to do that.

My only complaint (if you can even call it that) is that I really wanted something for Emma. I was certain we were going to see sparks fly between Emma and Tucker. I wanted her to have a little happiness after everything just like Lei had.

LOVED LOVED LOVED this book though and highly recommend it!
