I did not expect to like this book as much as I did! I haven’t read many westerns to compare this to though. I feel like it was basically a bunch of side quests as a cattleman brought a herd from Texas to fort smith. Hamp was kinda baddie and could get his business done. Clint was always causing too much trouble. Hamp and Junior were so sweet too!
Clint and Hamp are long-time partners they drive a herd they bought down in Mexico and slowly drive them to Fort Smith. The adventure brings a wife to Hemp as payment for the help he was seeking for Clint. As with so many westerns, two strangers marry and it becomes the love of a lifetime that we do not seem to have in this world we have today.
Besides the love story, which takes a back seat to the cattle drive brings a boatload of adventure with many mishaps and a sadness that cuts deep.
This book is supposedly based on the "Trail Drive" concept of Ralph Compton. The story isn't CLOSE to the style of Compton. It was told in a rather simplistic way...and really did not have much suspense or build up when it got to the "action" scenes. And there were to many stupid "cuss" words throughout the story that were a distraction IMO as well. Not really all that vulgar, but kinda silly. I'd give it a 2.5 if I could. If another book has Compton on it, but is written by Richards I will pass on it.
