USA TODAY bestseller Dana Mentink enjoys writing in many different capacities. She currently writes for Harlequin's Love Inspired Suspense and Poisoned Pen Press.
Dana is the recipient of a Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award, two ACFW Carol Awards as well as a Holt Medallion.
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this series, and this installment didn’t even last an entire day out of the box before I had it read. I loved the angle of having a married couple for the stars and for her to call her long-estranged husband when she finds herself in a dangerous situation. Rival biker gangs keep after the girl Shannon is trying to help escape into a better life along with the girl’s small baby.
This is romantic suspense exactly as I like it—well-written, squeaky clean, and the romance factor low and authentic rather than being all about external appearance. Very good story!
Looking for almost non-stop action and danger in a romantic suspense story? Cowboy Bodyguard would be an excellent choice for your next read! These characters are continually in harm’s way throughout the entire book!
Cowboy Bodyguard is part of a series. However, it can be read as a stand alone novel even though characters from the first two books do appear in this story. I really enjoyed getting to catch up with the main characters from book one to see what was going on in their lives.
I thought Jack was a great character. He exemplified a selfless type of love toward Shannon, who walked away from him before their marriage even began. I loved the way he worked to protect her, tried to share about God with her, and was always trying to think of what was best for her. Shannon was a character who frustrated me through much of the book. I liked the chemistry and attraction between these two characters, yet Shannon was so stubborn and had such a skewed view of reality. I did love the truly life changing growth she exhibited by the end of the story.
I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
To be honest, this book had me at the title. I mean, hello? Cowboy + Bodyguard?? Yes please! And then when I realized it was Jack’s story? Yep. That sealed the deal.
I’m really loving this Gold Country Cowboy series by Dana Mentink – and not just for the cowboys! She’s created a family of compelling characters that feel like friends, so you’re even more invested in the story’s outcome than you would be already. The Thorn brothers and their parents are the kind of cowboys you definitely want on your side, with even the momma being a sharp shooter who steps up to the rifle when a need requires it. Humor rounds them out, as do their tender hearts and sacrificial love.
And let me tell you … you will be holding your breath from the start of this book until the very last. Mentink crafts edge-of-your-seat, heart-in-your-throat suspense with danger around every corner. Even when you think it’s safe to relax a bit… don’t! She keeps the stakes and the tensions high from beginning to end, and a tangled web gets even more tangled as the story progresses.
All this run-for-your-life tension of course leads to great romantical tension as well, and Jack & Shannon’s story is sweet and swoony. I wasn’t quite sure of their motivation for keeping their estranged marriage a secret (both the marriage itself and the estrangement) but I enjoyed watching them work through their still-present feelings for each other when the emergency Shannon has found herself in forces them to reunite and take care of a baby too! Jack in daddy-mode is enough to warn you to keep a fan handy at all times – his tendency to press a kiss to the baby’s head is just plain swoonilicious! Shannon’s faith journey goes hand in hand with her struggle to deal with her feelings for Jack and her dream of being a doctor too, and I thought Mentink presented these emotions authentically and gently.
Bottom Line: Hang on to your cowboy hats and saddle up! You gallop immediately into heart-stopping action in a race against time (and rival biker gangs) to save a little baby and her frightened young mom. Well-plotted suspense keeps you frantically turning pages to see what will happen next, and forget sleeping until you know how it turns out! A swoony romance and a sweet story add to the suspense – and the great characters – to give you a story you won’t want to put down!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
"Now that blood had been spilled, he understood it wouldn't end until one of them was on the ground."
Dana Mentink's series about the Gold Country Cowboys is quite good and this one just may be her best suspense novel yet! I loved every minute. The action never lets up, except for very brief periods. She tells a quite compelling tale and one that her loyal readers are sure to enjoy. And anyone who has never read her books.
Jack Thorn gets a surprise call from Shannon Livingston, the wife he married 7 years ago and hasn't seen since. She is trying to help a woman accused of trying to kill a member of a biker gang and taking their baby with her. Shannon needs Jack's help. Of course, Jack is always ready to help her because his heart is still engaged.
The newest Gold Country Cowboy series by Dana Mentink had my heart beating fast throughout the entire story! Between rival biker gangs and the potential threat of an all out turf war between them, it was constant knife edge tension. She seriously had me under my blankets, sucking my thumb & calling out for my mommy...lol! Wickedly scary stuff, but it's this kind of suspense that keeps me coming back for more. I've enjoyed each installment in this series and getting to know the Thorn family more. Evie Thorn especially, she'll engulf you in her love and feed you until you burst. It's her way of diffusing a tense situation and looking out for those she cares for...she's a mama bear you don't want to mess with! I had no idea how Jack, Shannon, and little Annabell were going to outrun Cruiser and his biker gang. It seems they were cut off at every corner and Shannon's life was threatened at every turn. There was no place to hide and I wondered who was the crooked crook who ratted on their whereabouts! And talking about hiding, what are they going to do about their marriage on paper only? I guess, you dear reader, will find out how all these things play out in the pages of this keep-you-up-all-night story! If you love suspense with a sprinkling of faith and a well deserved happily-ever-after, you'll be in for a treat with this one. Dana Mentink is a must-read author for me! I can't wait for younger brother Keegan's story next, he's been a bit of a mystery throughout the series.
5 Reasons to Hire This Guy Next Time You Need a Bodyguard Let’s start with our cowboy’s name. Jack. Best cowboy name ever in my book. She got points for that right off the back. My family, on the other hand, is probably sick of me singing the ballad about “Cowboy Jack.” Tuff.
But I promised five reasons to hire Jack, and well, my mom taught me to keep my word. And considering I requested a review copy, I kind of need to keep my word on that, too. So here goes:
First: Genuine, selfless love for people. Jack may have balked a time or twenty, but he always gave up self to protect others—those he loved and those who needed love.
Second: Loyalty. Of all the things that I admire about him, I think Jack’s loyalty may top it—even more than #5. After all, we kind of expect that one in Christian Fiction. But time, pain, and hardship can’t break his loyalty to those he loves—despite every effort to try.
Third: Forgiveness. One of the most beautiful things about Jack is that despite the pain he endures, he has learned that lesson of forgiveness from the Lord and learned it well.
Fourth: Tenderness and strength. Just call him the “Timex Cowboy.” Dude, this guy, no matter what happens, bounces back. Beat him, shoot at him, send him through the fiery furnace, and he’ll come out almost unscathed, while holding the baby close and keeping her from being afraid. Almost. Seriously.
Fifth: Faith. Jack knows Who is in charge, Who he belongs to. Who to turn to when trouble surfaces. And since this book is full of trouble, that’s a good thing. It’s something Shannon could learn. I suspect she will, too.
Did I like the book? Yes and no. There was a lot I did like about it. Jack’s character had that lovely blend of utterly human and worthy of being a hero all wrapped in one. He was a character I could follow and believe.
Okay, occasionally the cowboy idioms became cliched, but I could overlook that. After all, cowboys are a bit larger than life, you know.
But a few things bothered me. Shannon’s “big lie” about herself that she believes.
All characters have one (or most good ones do, anyway). And frankly, hers is a good one. But I felt like I was just told about it every now and then—just in case I forgot—rather than seeing it play out on the page.
And a few things jarred—mostly regarding their impending divorce. I found myself wanting to shake the screen and say, “The day you file for divorce is not the day your marriage is legally over. Stop counting down to filing day as if it’s the end.”
The faith aspect, for the most part, I found rather refreshing. It was one of the strongest I’ve ever seen in a “Love Inspired” anything. I want to give the author huge kudos for that. But I have to take issue with one statement. At one point, Jack assures Shannon that God was a part of her life-saving measures in her past. He says, “Your skill plus His will—it takes both.”
Um… it takes His will. Period. He may use her skill to accomplish His will, but God certainly doesn’t need it.
And being the semantical stickler I can be about things like that, I had to note it.
Still, it was an interesting book and I think readers of Love Inspired Suspense will find it a fresh take in that respect. If you like unusual situations handled with a relatively realistic focus and a reasonable romance, I think you’ll enjoy it.
If you like cowboys, well… there might be a hint here and there that dances over the stereotype line, but really… she got enough right that I suspect it’s just that I’m used to the cowboy commoners vs. the “gentry” so to speak. Nothing screamed “New York City cowboy to me. That was a blessed relief right there.
I probably say this in every review I write of a Dana Mentink book but it just amazes me that a dog-loving, elementary school teacher with a great sense of humor can write such great suspense stories. But Dana does just that. Each book of hers I read just wows me with the characters, descriptions, and storylines.
Jack's story had me hooked from the very beginning. I sat down to read just a few chapters and soon realized I had read over half the book. And if it wasn't for work the next morning I would have stayed up all night to finish the book. I just had to know how this story ended. The pace of the book is wonderful with all of the nonstop action. The story flowed easily from chapter to chapter and kept my interest.
Dana Mentink does a wonderful job of creating a wide range of characters. From cowboys to bikers she managed to perfectly capture the personalities of each. Each one seemed so realistic is was easy to picture them facing off with one another. To go along with these well-developed characters were descriptions that made me feel as if I were part of the story.
Realistic characters, a good storyline, and great descriptions made this book so easy to read it was as if the pages turned themselves. I can't recommend Dana Mentink and her suspense books enough. Even though this is the third book in the series it can totally be read as a standalone. I think it would be the perfect introduction to the author's work. Beware though! This book is hard to put down!
I received a complimentary copy of this book and was under no obligation to write a review. All opinions are mine.
Ms. Mentink promised us a bumpy ride in COWBOY BODYGUARD and that is what is delivered. Imagine working as an Emergency Room nurse when a biker is brought in... and he isn't one of the many good bikers... No. He's part of the 1%, part of a very dangerous gang that'd rather kill you than look at you. Not only that, but injured biker's girlfriend is accused of pushing him down the stairs, causing this accident -- and the biker's want to retaliate by kidnapping her newborn baby and killing her. She is only a teenager and a bit panicked and doesn't know where to hide from all these scary tattooed bully bikers. Of course, Shannon is intimidated by them too, though she tries not to show it, and goes running to her estranged husband Jack for protection--who better than a cowboy, right? But even miles away she is still in danger and those bikers are on her tail... and I am so glad I am not a heroine in one of these romantic suspense books. (shudder). I would never survive the first attack and of course there are more than one, two, three... there's usually a dozen or more. Plus the black moment when all is lost....
Again, with this suspense we know who, we know why. But we don't know when, where or how, so there are plenty of reasons to keep reading.
Don't miss COWBOY BODYGUARD. Fans will want to read Cowboy Christmas Guardian and Treacherous Trails first to get stories from other secondary characters in this book.
I just can’t get enough of this Thorn family! Throw in a secret marriage and a baby, and there was no way I was going to miss the latest installment in Dana Mentink’s Gold Country Cowboys series.
With a group of bikers intent on finding a woman and baby that “belong” to them, Shannon Livingston has nowhere to turn. Nowhere, that is, except her husband—a man she has had little contact within the past seven years.
A plethora of high-stakes situations keep this story speeding by, and then there’s Jack Thorn with little Annabelle. Swoon. Who can resist and strapping cowboy falling in love with a baby girl?
In the midst of it all, Shannon must face her past hurts before she can embrace a future she’s spent years trying to convince herself she doesn’t want. But spending time with the Thorns, her mother and uncle, and little Annabelle causes her to face the truth.
Through this series, Mentink (who was a new-to-me author) has become a must-read one for me with her focus on a family that fights evil and danger together. And with one Thorn brother left unattached, I’m looking forward what’s in store for the youngest Thorn.

Another great read from this series! I've adored Jack in his brothers' books, and he made a phenomenal hero in this one. <3 Shannon was a little tougher to like, but the obvious scars she was carrying and her fierce protectiveness for Dina and her baby made me willing to give her some room to grow. Although every time she ripped Jack's heart out--again--I really wanted to shake her! Also, watching them with the baby was almost always either funny (usually Shannon) or incredibly sweet (usually Jack).
As usual in this series, I liked that the character growth was slow and steady rather than coming all in a burst at the end. I did have a small issue with the fact that Jack had married Shannon all those years ago when she didn't share his faith, but I really appreciated his selfless love for her. And I liked the unusual circumstances that eventually drew her to faith.
As usual, I adored the rest of the Thorn family, even if the tension got a bit thick at a couple of points. Have I mentioned in the other reviews how much I adore Evie? Because I don't think I have, but I definitely do... And it's rather funny to watch the different guys switch roles when circumstances are reversed--particularly when it comes to who has the "take it easy; you're hurt" part when we all know they have been just as terrible of a patient in the past. :D But I have to ask--is there some unspoken rule that the couple from the last book aren't allowed to be in the following book? Does that mean Jack and Shannon have to be conveniently out of town in the next one? Because I would so love to see ALL of them together again...
Small note--there were a couple inconsistencies that bugged me (a wrecked car is said to land upside down in one scene but right side up in another; Shelby's uncle is referred to as her dad in at least one scene), but not enough to really affect my enjoyment. ;)
Content--mentions of divorce; mentions of abandonment and infidelity; violence, including fistfights, knives, and gunplay; mentions of vandalism and property destruction; kidnapping; threats of murder; mentions of abuse; mentions of a relationship and a baby born out of wedlock; women referred to as property; a woman called a "tramp"; some kissing (not descriptive)
Move over all you swoon worthy characters, there is a new cowboy in town! If ever there was a man to be secretly married to, it would be Jack Thorn. My goodness this is a cowboy that will be in your mind for awhile. Not only is he a good guy, but he's fiercely protective and loyal. And let's face it. nothing melts my heart more than a man who is god with a baby! This book is so much more than a swoon filled love story though.
First of all, this book kept me on my toes. I was so anxious and nervous for what was coming next for the characters! This is one of those books that you just have to read in one sitting if time permits, and if it doesn't then you'd better read at every single opportunity you get. The thrill of the chase from the biker gang was unexpected, but a welcome addition to the story line. You feel as if you are right there is the book thanks to Dana Mentink's gifted writing abilities. And as if a swoony hero and fast paced action wasn't enough, you have Shannon Livingston. Sure, this woman has guts in helping a mother in need, but what really strikes me about her is the way her character grew throughout this story. She had so much to overcome, and you can't help but root for her the entire time. I wanted her to just run back into Jack's arms and declare her love for him, but that wouldn't have made a good story. No, the way Dana Mentink wrote her character and really had Shannon slowly evolve was perfect. Not only did it keep me more interested in her character specifically, but it made me enjoy the story that much more.
If you're looking for an action packed novel that will keep you guessing this book is one you will want to pick up today! I always enjoy books by Dana Mentink, but I think this one has become my new favorite! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cowboy Bodyguard by:Dana Mentink Format: Kindle Genre: Suspense, Love Inspired Timeframe: Current day Location: Central California somewhere Characters: Shannon Livingstone: L.A. Doctor who wants to protect a teenager and her baby Jack Thorn: Cowboy, Shannon’s husband she hasn’t seen in seven years Dina: Teenager with a baby, accused of pushing her boyfriend Annabell: Four-month old Shannon wants to protect Two rival biker gangs
Shannon is a doctor in L.A. Her ER patient is a member of a dangerous bike gang with a skull fracture and internal bleeding keeping him unconscious. The bikers are convinced his girlfriend, Dina, pushed him down a set of stairs and want revenge. Dina fears for her life and that of her baby so Shannon decides she needs to help. The person she calls is her husband; the husband she hasn’t seen for seven years.
The gang is on their tail throughout the book and danger follows them wherever they go.
Sometimes I have to just let go of a character’s flaws and just review a book.
Despite my disapproval, I have to admit the story kept me reading. It was suspenseful yet tender, and the lessons learned made it worth the read.
Three-stars for the Oh no, here they come again eye-rolling I did, and the one character that ticked me off, but four-stars for the rest of the story. Three and a half I'll round up to four.
I enjoyed getting to revisit the Thorn family again and this time we get Jack’s and his estranged wife, Shannon’s, story. This pretty much heats up right from the beginning pages and doesn’t stop until the final ones. Shannon, an emergency room doctor, is out of her depth when one night she stands up to a motorcycle gang when one of its brothers is seriously injured. They are planning on taking their blame out on the member’s girlfriend who also is the mother of the member’s small child. Shannon sees the situation and acts quickly before really thinking about the outcome.
With nowhere else or no one else to turn to, Shannon contacts her estranged husband Jack. Jack who is so in love with her, steps in with no questions asked. This is a pretty suspenseful and action filled read. The gang barely gives Jack and Shannon or the rest of the Thorns a rest. The whole town is in danger of erupting into a turf war between two feuding gangs, and the mother of the baby, well she hasn’t told Shannon everything.
I liked seeing the other brothers and getting a brief glimpse into their lives. However, their lives are affected in a big way as brothers are torn against each other as the secrets that become like bombshells on all of their lives are revealed and not to mention the past demons that haunt Shannon to this day. I did like the family bond the Thorn’s had. It was strong and memorable. I hope there is more to their stories.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel. I was not required to post a review and all views and opinions are my own.
Phew! Talk about setting a reader up for lots of romantical angst! Married, but not really. Jack wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to Shannon even though he tries to steel himself against further hurt. And Shannon's just plain discombobulated. She was sure the marriage was over before it had a chance to begin and she's fine with that -- except Jack's the first person she thinks to call when her life is in danger. And she's not surprised when he drops everything and comes running so what does that tell you? That you're in for a rollicking ride on this literary roller-coaster, that's what!
Not that there's tons of time to actually delve into the tumultuous romance -- not with a crew of relentlessly diabolical villains. There's something uber scary about gang alliances. These guys don't quit! And that means Jack and Shannon and their infant charge are constantly on the run. But don't despair -- the Thorn clan has their back and fans of this series will happily posse up with the brothers to keep this trio safe.
Mentink delivers another frantically breathless romantic suspense! (And there's still one brother left who hasn't met his perfect match so I'm hoping that means there's another Gold Country Cowboys book in our future.)
Dana Mentink’s third book in her Gold Country Cowboys series, Cowboy Bodyguard, is another winner.
This time Jack Thorn and the rest of the Thorn family are embroiled in protecting Jack’s estranged wife, Shannon, and an infant she is caring for from being kidnapped by members of two rival motorcycle gangs—the Tide and the Aces.
The town of Gold Bar becomes the battleground for the war between the Thorns, the Tide, and the Aces. Jack and Shannon battle their personal war at the same time.
Cowboy Bodyguard draws the reader deeper into the Gold Country Cowboy series, allowing us to become more enamored with the strong cowboys that make up the Thorn family. The fourth book in the series will be published soon, and I can’t wait to read it. But, at the same time, it will be sad because the series will come to an end. The members of the Thorn family have become like friends.
Do yourself a favor and read Cowboy Christmas Guardian and Treacherous Trails, if you havent already, so you can get the whole picture of the Thorn family.
I received a copy of Cowboy Bodyguard for review purposes in exchange for my honest review, which I have done.
Cowboy Bodyguard ( Gold Country Cowboys #3 ) By: Dana Mentink Cowboy Bodyguard Is book three in Gold Country Cowboys Series. The author had me hooked from the start. Cowboy Bodyguard might just be Ms. Mentink’s best yet. Cowboy stories are one of my favorite, I love them. You take cowboys and biker gangs and you are on the edge of your seat trying to read faster to see what is going to happen next. Cowboy Jack and Shannon, who he married in secret seven years ago are trying to save a mother and her baby. There is action, danger, and a love from the past. Shannon and Jack’s story is great. Will they be able to put the past behind them to help save a baby and mother? I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but was not told that I had to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
This romantic suspense is action packed. The suspense centers around California biker gangs. The danger they create is portrayed well. Some of the characters are from previous novels in the series but this was my introduction to them. Mentink portrays them well. I admired Shannon and her drive to complete her medical training. But sometimes such drive becomes an obstacle to love. Her compassion for the infant and mother in need was wonderful. Jack and the entire Thorn family were so caring and protective, they are an inspiration.
I recommend this Christian romantic suspense to readers who enjoy lots of suspense experienced by characters that grow on you. There is a good Christian message included too.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
This series just keeps getting better with each new story. I can't just read some and put it down. When I pick up a story written by Mrs. Mentink, it's always a page turner with action packed suspense and sweet, clean romance. I can't wait to read Keegan's story!
WOO HOO! I LOVED IT! I've loved Jack pretty much from the beginning of this series and I was SO happy to read his story! And what a story it is! The pace is SO fast in this one! I found myself figuratively on the edge of my seat the whole time, and had to find just the right places to force myself to put it down so I could, you know.......sleep! ;D Needless to say I DEVOURED this book! Dana has once again come up with a completely unique plot and while there are many scenes I enjoyed there's this one scene.......well I don't want to give anything away, let's just say IT IS THE BEST SCENE! But you'll have to read it and see what you think and if you can tell which part I'm talking about! ;) Even though I love Jack and truly enjoyed his story it's the next Thorn brother who I've been waiting for! :D Can't WAIT to return to Gold Country!

*I received this book from the author for the purpose of reviewing it. This in no way affected my opinion and the above are my true thoughts and feelings about Cowboy Bodyguard. ~ASC
Wow, this story packs a punch of love and suspense into its small pages. I couldn’t put the story down and finished it within hours. Shannon and jack have a huge past that could make a reader wonder what their future will be? Bring in the rival gangs in to Gold Bar and have a baby that is wanted by everyone, you have a great book. I think one point that I always love about the way this author writes, is she has the ability to create smart, witty characters that will have you smiling by the end of each book. I love the banter between Jack and Shannon, the way they communicate was part of the reason I loved this story.
I always know I can turn to this author for a great read that is never anything less than 5 stars in my mind. You don’t want to miss the latest in this series, and I am hoping to see what will be next!
Cowboy Bodyguard is the third book in the Gold Country Cowboys series. I have been looking forward to this story because it centers around Jack Thorn, the brother I have been interested in getting to know better. Ms. Mentink has outdone herself this time in the action category. When you have two rival gangs and throw some cowboys in the mix, you are destined for a roller coaster ride of a story. When you add in a secret marriage, a mother on the run, a baby that needs protection, being in suspense of who the mole is that is providing information, you have the formula for a fantastic novel. Oh and in true Dana Mentink style, you have to have the right amount of romance to go with the action and suspense.
Although this can definitely be read as a standalone, I would highly recommend treating yourself by reading the others in the series first because readers will get updates on the Thorn brother featured in each of the first two books.
I am looking forward to Keegan's story this fall in Lost Christmas Memories.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
When I see Dana Mentink’s name on a book, it moves to the top of my TBR. She draws me in to her stories right from the first page. There’s always a lot of action that keeps you quickly turning the pages. She is definitely a “one more chapter” kind of author!!
This is the third book of a four book series. This story features Jack, one of the four Thorn brothers. It easily stands well on its own. I have been waiting for this story ever since I finished Owen’s story. Now I am (im)patiently waiting for Keegan’s book!
I really like Jack. He’s loyal to the end, and when he falls in love, it’s forever - no matter what. I absolutely love the relationship between the four brothers. They are always there for each other, and always have each other’s backs. In fact, I love the entire Thorn family!
Shannon.... what can I say about Shannon? I have to admit, there were times I wanted to yell at her for being so stubborn. But, as I continued to read and learn about her past, I realized how hard it was for her to believe that she was worthy of love. She thought worth was measured by achievement. As I kept turning the pages, I became more sympathetic to her. I love how the baby Shannon and Jack are protecting, along with Shannon’s profession, taught her that she was worthy of both Jack’s love and, more importantly, God’s love.
Dana knocked this book out of the park. It starts of with a surprise. Shannon and Jack's story is a great read. Its filled with action and surprise at every corner. It also shows a love being rebuilt from the ashes. It shows how a young girl always felt unloved by her father and needed to find it in herself and God. Its a beautiful story that will have you turning the pages from start to finish. For you will get to see Shannon find herself as the pages turn as well. I love this author for she writes great books and she has done it again.
Totally great book. Edge of your seat action. Very well written and clean. Cowboys.....what a breed of man. Story line is excellent. Highly recommend. I received an advance reader copy from the author. Opinions are my own.
An interesting book with twists and turns. I never can resist a western romance!!!
I got so frustrated that real communication between the main characters was lacking. Jack assumes Shannon means this. Shannon assumes Jack means this. Shannon...Jack sit down and iron out the problem!!! Not always easy in real life let alone in a book.
I was hoping by the end of the book the issues were addressed and open communication occurred. Shannon was warm, hardworking and went beyond the call of duty. Jack was protective, loving and just the man to have on your side. The two together were a match made in...?
A page turner. A book that keeps you guessing. I loved it.
I received this free to review.

Guest Post from Dana Mentink I’ve spent a bit of time in emergency rooms lately. Not to complain, mind you. The asthma related treatments worked like a charm and we were blessed by good care, so I am not grateful. There’s a bonus, too. The emergency room is a great place for people watching! Hour upon hour I spent surveying patients, relatives, nurses and doctors. I came away pondering what it must be like to work in the strange bustle that is an emergency room. That’s where character Shannon Livingston was born.
The E.R doc and nurses must be brilliant problem solvers with nerves of steel because they never know what will roll through their doors. Since they are not responsible for follow up care, they have only a short term relationship with their patients. But what would happen, my fictional mind wanted to know, if one emergency room treatment ensnared Shannon in a “run for your life” scenario? And what if her incredible life saving skills weren’t nearly enough to save her own life, or the baby she’s suddenly become responsible for? Ah me! The perfect scenario for a suspense novel, no? I hope you enjoy Cowboy Bodyguard. I can promise it’s going to be a bumpy ride!

The story starts with danger and continues throughout the story. Working in an emergency room can be dangerous as Shannon finds out. She knows the news she is about to deliver will not be pleasant but she is determined to not let the Scarlet Tide motorcycle group intimidate her. I felt so bad for the young woman Dina. It looks like she is being blamed for the accident.
I thought Dina was brave to escape from the Scarlet Tide with her baby. She must rely on Shannon to help her get to safety before they find her. When Shannon makes a plea to her estranged husband, I could just imagine his shock. Jack couldn't believe the message on his phone. Just when he was getting use to the idea that a divorce was imminent, Shannon calls him for help. Shannon and Jack have their hands full when Dina bolts and leaves behind her baby. The intense drama is excellent as they figure out how to keep ahead of the Scarlet Tide. There is a funny line that I can't overlook. When the leader of the group catches up with Shannon, she is with Jack a very tough and protective cowboy. The leader asks Jack, "So, who do you think you are? John Wayne? " If ever there was a well known tough cowboy, it would have to be John Wayne. I had this image of him standing there staring the leader down with an attitude that would scare anyone. Jack sure fits that image as he addresses the leader. I think Shannon has found someone who she can depend on.
Jack and Shannon are in for a bumpy road as they try to out maneuver the biker club. There is a leak somewhere because they can't seem to stay ahead of them. I really enjoyed the relationship between Jack and Shannon. Who gets so busy with their life, they forget to file divorce papers after seven years? There is definitely some trust issues and insecurity going on and I couldn't get enough of their story. I liked the story line very much. I have been around Harley's all my life and this story is something I was hoping an author would write about. The biker group does have a code of honor and I'm glad the author included that detail in the book. The story is good and portrays bikers in a realistic way.
This is one book that doesn't stop with twists and danger until the very end. I knew there was a mole somewhere, but the author cleverly kept me guessing. There is one thing I have to mention. As certain characters were traveling up to a remote rustic cabin, the woman is worried about snakes. The man tells her not to worry because it is springtime. I live in the country and believe me springtime is when you need to be very careful of snakes. They make their grand appearance in the spring with lots of little babies.
Maybe Shannon will realize she has thought of marriage wrong. Shannon needs a good talking to by someone. My goodness she has strung Jack along for way too long, but Jack believes in marriage so readers we will see what happens. I was a bit impatient with her at times and so hoped she would consider her marriage a covenant and not a contract.
Overall the book was good with a strong faith element which I appreciated. Readers prepare yourself for a bumpy and thrilling ride as two biker groups take on a small town of cowboys who honor God and protect their family. I think this is the best book the author has written. I highly recommend it.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Cowboy Bodyguard. This is the third book in the Gold Country Cowboys Series. I really enjoy Dana's books. This is an awesome series and I know you are going to love it. The book is well written, action packed, and full of adventure. Faith is interwoven throughout the whole story much like a fine tapestry. This is an awesome read!
Doctor Shannon Livingston is working in the ER when she receives a patient that has fallen down a flight of stairs. The man is alive but just barely. She goes to report his condition to his family but only finds a biker gang. As she speaks to them they threaten the young girl that is with them, Dina. Shannon walks away and is called to another case. Later Dina finds her in the break room carrying a small baby. The men are out looking for her. She needs help. As Shannon is trying to figure out what to do she sees a cop take a bribe from the leader of the gang, the Tides. They sneak out the back door and run. With no one else that she can trust she calls her husband. The man she secretly married seven years ago.
Cowboy Jack Thorn is shocked to get a call from his secret wife. He had finally got over her betrayal and had decided to go ahead with the divorce. Now she needs help. There is nothing to do but rescue her and the small baby she brings with her. She explains the mother is trying to find her brother and they needed to keep the baby safe. He takes her home and explains to his family that she is his wife and has been or seven years. This child is theirs and they need to keep them safe. His family has a hard time accepting the situation especially when a rival gang comes into town as the Tides come to get the child and find Dina.
A journey of twists and turns with a couple that God brought together for a second chance. God had a plan for these two, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him turn your life around. He is a good God and wants only the best for you.
In this Gold Country Cowboys novel, Jack Thorn gets a surprise call from the woman he married in secret years ago. Shannon Livingston needs his protection for herself and the baby she’s hiding from a biker gang targeting the mother. Now Jack must help Shannon, even if shielding her means pretending to be a true husband to the only woman he’s ever loved.
My Thoughts: It's difficult enough being an ER doctor, but when your patient happens to be part of the most notorious biker gangs, you have to have nerves of steel. That's what Shannon Livingston was made of. That's how her past shaped her... to be the best no matter what or at what cost.
This novel will take you on a roller coaster ride, it's full of suspense, mystery and with cowboys, lots of shooting! The plot of this story is fantastic. Who would have thought cowboys and biker gangs? It works so well and keeps the reader guessing with all the turns and twists in the plot.
The reader will fall in love with the Thorn family, not to mention the Thorn brothers, but then who can resist a cowboy?
As I was reading, I was getting annoyed with Shannon, when she was putting her career ahead of her marriage and denying her feelings for her husband. Who doesn't want to be loved by someone like Jake Thorn? Why does she keep holding back? Why couldn't she compromise?
The author is an excellent writer and she brings you into the story; the reader truly feels like they are a part of the Thorn family. The reader can feel the suspense and action that is happening.
What I took away from this novel is the theme of God's love; His love for us, and how we should love others. It's about putting our full faith in Him and letting Him direct our paths. Not taking each hurt we have, holding on to it, but giving everything to God and letting go. That means letting the past be in the past and moving on to the future. It means forgiving.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I look forward to reading more from Dana Mentink.
I have been waiting for this book and I can say, it was well worth the wait! I have loved the Thorn family since the first book in the series, but I’ve always been drawn to Jack and wanted to get to know him better, and the author didn’t disappoint me.
Jack is the kind and gentle man I always expected him to be and he remains unruffled in even the most unexpected and dangerous circumstances. For instance, when the woman he married in secret several years ago, calls him needing his protection for herself and a baby she’s hiding from a biker gang! Yes, Ms. Mentink has assembled quite a cast of characters in Cowboy Bodyguard. Bikers, cowboys, a doctor and a baby and they all fit perfectly into this suspenseful story that had me turning pages as fast as I could because I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.
It’s always a pleasure to return to Gold Bar Ranch, where the Thorn family is all about hard work, helping those in need and most of all loving and being there for each other. Plus, you can count on my favorite matriarch, Evie to have a pot of stew or something made with love and to offer any thing she has to nourish both your body and soul because that’s what she does. She has an inner strength that I have admired about her character from the beginning.
Overall, the plot in this book is heart pounding, yet has such tender moments that I felt a wide range of emotions and I embraced each and every one of them. I feel as though I actually know this family and I expect that there may be a bit of danger, but they will have each other’s back and I find that comforting. I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series because if I’m not mistaken, Keegan will get his story and I’m ready for another wild ride with these cowboys.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and was under no obligation to write appositive review. All opinions are my own.
My Penny's Worth I wasn’t down to review this book, but I am glad that I did.
Why? Cowboys, not my cup of tea as we don’t have cowboys in England. Well that’s not strictly true, we have some cowboy builders, but that is another story.
Cowboy Bodyguard is an easy read with plenty of action, and it didn’t take me long to consume. However, that said there are lessons to be learned within the pages. Principally that of fatherly love especially in the absence of it.
“Please make Daddy love me. Please. Incomprehensibly, emotion from those little-girl prayers thickened her throat and blurred her vision.”
What are the main characters like? Well, I’ll let the book speak for itself in regards to Shannon Livingstone.
“Shannon, for all her maddening qualities, was a warrior, through and through.”
Jack Thorn, aka the Cowboy Bodyguard, is all you could ask for in a protector. He cares, is well rounded, talks sense and knows he is not the author of events. Again let me the words of the book reveal this.
“You don’t get to save a life without His permission. But to be His partner in that..”He shook his head, eyes blue as the deep sea, “That’s something truly special, something to be real proud of.”
Could I relate to this book? Definitely, as Shanon’s struggles are my own so this struck a chord.
“It’s hard to never be enough, but it made me strong.”
Would I recommend Cowboy bodyguard? This book takes you on a journey. Yes, it uses a story about a young girl and her baby trapped in an awful situation. However, it’s also about Shannon finding herself just as we all do in our everyday lives.
If you would like a book that tells of Daddy’s love in a backdrop of biker’s who believe they own people and will do anything to preserve their culture, then you might like Cowboy bodyguard.
Thank you, Dana Mentink, for writing Cowboy Bodyguard.
*I received this book for free. No compensation was received, and all opinions are my own.*
