Pathetic. Amateurish. Painfully bad. Downloading this hot mess is a waste of bandwidth.

Basically, I feel I should have some type of award for making it to the end of their first chapter. Thank goodness this was a Kindle Unlimited book—it would be a real tragedy if I had paid even $0.99 for it.

If you love stories about haunted houses, ghosts or demon possession, you will LOVE this book!

Once I started reading, I couldn't stop until the bitter end. So well written that I found myself thinking that I was watching a movie instead of reading a book. The story has all the elements you would expect: a troubled heroine, dead ghostly children, a house that appears to be beautiful but is filled with horror & demons.

If you love to be scared by the books that you read, you will enjoy this book. If you are easily scared, don't read it by yourself at night....you will definitely ruin your sleep! Well done, Ms. Clark!

A good read

This was a tale of witchcraft and possession across the generations and surprised me by not having a happy ending. It was well written and the characters had depth. Very enjoyable.

Since I have read one other book by Caroline I was ecstatic to read this one because I knew that it would be damn good and I was blown away. This book was better than I thought it would be and let me explain a bit about that part. At first, I was a little worried because The Haunting of Brynlee House was based on an actual house and this one isn’t but there was no need for me to worry. There is just so much that happens that makes the reader want to figure it all out. What’s going on with the ghostly children? Who are the shadowy figures? Why is everything so weird? Is the main character losing her mind? Or just having nightmares? What happened in that house? Or better yet, what didn’t happen in that house?

I can’t believe how complex and intriguing the whole book is. I am just kind of in awe of this story and the characters because I just loved it so much. The depth of what happens in the story is surprising and incredibly sad but it makes the story really great. There were also so many twists and turns in this book that I was glad that I was laying down in my bed while reading it for fear of my vertigo acting up and getting whiplash. Even the ending I didn’t see coming and has me still looking around and saying what the fuck just happened to myself and to my mom. She’s laughing at me of course, but still, if a book can do that then props to you, my friend.

I gotta say that I really hope that there might be a sequel with the way it ended because WHAT?! I mean, WOW.

Gotta give you 5 stars for that one Caroline, whew. You really got me there. Damn girl.

Rosie is an author of historical romances who has not been able to write since being beaten by her boyfriend Clive. Her friend Amy does house sitting and gives her the opportunity to housesit in the luxurious RedRise House. It is out in the country and very isolated but beautiful. The cabbie who drops her off tries to warn her about something but she doesn't listen, sure that this beautiful isolated location will be just what she needs to recover and start writing again, and indeed the first day she writes for hours. However strange occurrences and sounds begin immediately. Something is not right at RedRise House. This book has all the elements of a successful ghost story and would make a great movie with a heroine typical of all horror movies who does everything she is told not to. I found myself telling her "No! Don't do it!", but I, the reader, of course know what really happened at RedRise House and she doesn't. It is very suspenseful and scary and comes to a conclusion worthy of The Omen. I received a copy of this book from the author to review and I thank her. I loved it!

A creepy, ghostly story. Don't read before you go to bed! I don't see books like this much, ones with a scary house on the cover. The tagline, "Ghosts and Haunted Houses," also lets you know what to expect. The book was like one of those haunted house movies.

The protagonist, Rosie, was vulnerable due to an incident with her ex-boyfriend. The goings-on didn't help her any. Even when she first arrived at the place she was housesitting, she was afraid that Clive had found her. Since Rosie is alone at the house, a lot of times there isn't any dialogue, but it's still interesting. The prologue was good and drew me in with events that happened many years ago.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more stories by this author and seeing what other spookiness she can conjure up.

Terrifying Haunted House Story

This haunted house at one time was an orphanage with a horrible secret. Now it is privately owned.
Rosie, a writer who is trying to get over a traumatic assault from her boyfriend has been asked to house sit. She thinks this will be a great idea as it is very secluded and she is on a deadline to finish her book plus she is thinks her ex won't find her there.
The owner's have left her a letter telling her that she only has access to certain parts of the house.
This is a very exciting read. Kept me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails! Highly Recommend This Book!

I have to say I do my best to not pick up any more authors then I am reading now. It is really hard to keep up with all of the series I read. With that said I am very happy, I found Caroline Clark. This first book of this series will not let you put it down. I found myself wanting to pick up my Kindle and read every minute I had. I would even read on my phone just to get more of this story in my hands. This is one of the most gripping horror stories I ever read in print. And the pace is wonderful and well as the scenes. I just finished this first book and already bought the next two. Can't wait to see what happens next in this scary and frightening gripping horror story.

So I left one earlier, but it didn't save. Basically I really truly enjoyed this book. I've been chasing the awesome and creepy feeling from a story since the Lesser Dead! I am in awe with how the characters and story really fit into each other. There is so much twist and turn in this book and intricate details that make for a horror story that will leave you in awe! I sincerely hope there will be a sequel!

Haunting first book in a ghost series

Rosie went to an enormous house in the country to write and to escape her abusive boyfriend. She is told to stay away from upstairs and some other parts of the house. Within a day she starts hearing noises and seeing visions. I don't want to give away the terror Rosie faces while she is in the house. I was surprised by the ending which is the reason gave 4 instead of 5 stars. The reader will have to read book 2 to discover what happens to Rosie after she leaves the house.

Ghost story

I think the plot of The Sacrifice was creative and original enough, but I skimmed through the book quickly. Written completely in narrative form, there is no room for character development. Any tense moments were dispelled by constant chuckling, laughter and pulling tricks out of a hat such as she carried a bible with her but it wasn’t mentioned until much later in the book when she happened to need it. I would have loved more dialogue. Narrative writing is so difficult to pull off, and this just didn’t work for me.

A creepy haunted house tale with an ending that leaves you wanting to read the next book in the series.

Rosie is an author with an abusive ex, who's friend sets her up with a house-sitting job. From the start, Rosie is unnerved by the ambience of the house, and is quickly immersed in the horror of the haunted house. She tries to leave but finds that she the house, or it's occupants won't let her go!"

I enjoyed the atmosphere and tension of this story, and will be reading the second book as soon as time allows.

THIS HITS THE SPOT, BIG TIME.

Being honest, I don't usually read female author books, (being a man) but thought why not give it a go, as I love a good haunted house story, so believe me when I say, this a story that's well worth reading.
Happily it's in two parts, so reaching the end of the first book sets you up for more to come in the second one.
Bette Davis once said in a movie, "Hold tight, it's going to be a bumpy ride".
There are a lot of bumps in this book, so enjoy them as much as I have. Totally recommend.

I may never close my eyes again....

I love a good psychological horror and this one fits.
Rosie is trying to piece her life together again after a brutal attack. With fears around every corner, she agrees to get away and house sit.
The house looks perfect....from the outside.....
Seems seem so real........voices so close....
Each night as she sleeps things happen...or do They???
Love this book

Hauntingly spectacular

For those of you who like ghost stories and the supernatural, this book is truly sparingly spectacular. Set in England in an old house this is a true good versus evil and it has a superb ending leading into the next book in the series. Do not read this in the dark and alone because you will be scared beyond sleep. I read this in one day and it is awesome.

I really liked how fast-paced this book was. The cliffhanger had me ready to get the other book and start reading it. My question is: are people affected by trauma more susceptible to supernatural forces? Rosie had survived a horrible tragedy and then becomes possessed by an evil spirit. How much can one person take? This is a great read for those who love ghost stories, haunted houses and the supernatural.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Rosie went to a mansion in the country to avoid her ex-boyfriend and to get to a quiet place to write. She got way more excitement then she expected at the house. This story is spooky and scary. The house is keeping some deep dark secrets. Good story bringing in the past and the present.

More of a 'light' read

This book was a bit creepy but I was a little disappointed there could have been a lot more put into it...
I thought the ending was a bit rushed and could have had a bit more too it.
I am I guess upset that it ended the way it d8d when the min character did so much to try and won against the evil.
Not my fav book but it wasn't too bad a read

Good verses evil

This book is a fantastic read and have read if you enjoy a good ghost story. The book starts with a broken woman and the usual creepy house, hut quickly becomes a deep and horrifying story. The book has a superb atmosphere and will draw the reader into the story.
The author has written an excellent first book in this series

The Sacrifice

Rosie's Friend Amy found her a job house sitting. Taking the job, Rosie falls in love with the house. It will go great with the book she's writing. As Rosie is staying here she thinks she is seeing and hearing small children, but she's not. Now she has to release these spirits and fight Matron. Can she succeed? Great read.

Recovering from an attack by someone who should have been a protector, Rosie is looking for peace and a quiet place to write. She finds neither at Red Rise house. Caroline Clark has written a fantastic story of a house with a past.

Good storyline

Ended with questions for me, enjoyed where the story was going. The writing was good, my only gripe was the repetition of the characters name as well as every thought or action was overdone. Still I will read this author again.

Very suspenseful

This story had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. I’m hoping there will be another book to take off from where this ended.
My heart went out to the spirits of the kids who were trapped in the house.

I just read The Haunting of RedRise House: Ghosts and Haunted Houses---The Battle Within.

If I was Rosie I do not think I would been able to go through what she did.

This is another great chilling, haunting, skin crawling book.

Another creepy, scary one from Clark

I adore this author, and she didn't disappoint. It was so hard to tell when the main character was dreaming, or experiencing the horrors of the Matron and RedRise House. I already have the sequel and can't wait to see where the story goes.

This is quite a scary read. Many twists and turns. Couldn’t put the book down. Sometimes I wondered, is this really happening to Rosie? I don’t like cliffhangers much, but I appreciate it this time because I needed a break from the scariness of this story.
