Fighting the Fire

Rate this book
One night is never enough…

For firefighter Sean Riddick, Warrior Fight Club keeps the demons of his past at bay, even though it means seeing Daniela England. Her ball-busting sarcasm drives him nuts, and he knows he’s damaged goods anyway, but he can’t help but remember how good they were together that one time. Now he wants to take her to the mats no matter how much they go toe to toe.

ER nurse Daniela England has lost so much that she’s vowed never to need anyone again. Fight club helps her beat back her survivor’s guilt, but it means dealing with Riddick. The hot-but-infuriating firefighter is everything she wants to avoid, which is why their one-night stand was a mistake. Now she needs to keep her distance so it doesn’t happen again.

But when Dani witnesses Sean’s motorcycle accident, she steps up to help him recover. One on one, they get beneath all the snark and find a connection neither expected. As Sean heals, the sparks between them burst into red-hot passion—and ignite old wounds. Now there are fires all around—and they have to decide which they’ll fight and which they’ll let consume them.

I think this may be my favorite couple and book of this series. It also reads really well as a stand-alone so if you just want meet Daniella and Sean, jump on in to this book. I didn’t know quite what to expect from these two, but their banter, their growing friendship, the depth of their care for each other was all a pleasure to read. I really did enjoy every second. I couldn’t wait for them to get their HEA and yet I didn’t want it to end.

My favorite Warrior Fight Club book! It had the club’s camaraderie leading to a beautiful romance. Sean is the perfect flawed-hero….a drop dead gorgeous and funny warrior with a hidden vulnerability that touched me deep inside. I wasn’t sure if Dani was good enough for him at first, but their banter and barbs were almost foreplay for what was to come. I had so much fun watching their relationship grow. I smiled, laughed, cringed a few times, then melted at the hot and sexy romance that developed.

This book had it all: A group dynamic that made me want to be a part of it. An enjoyable romance that made me smile long after it was over. A smoking hot romance that curled my toes. And finally, a lovely heartfelt romance that made me tear up. I loved it.

'Fighting The Fire' is the book that I've been waiting for for ages, though I'd probably call it the crowning glory of Laura Kaye's achievement these past few years after reading the author's post-story notes.

Sean Riddick and Dani England were the pairing I was always looking out for in this series, and I supposed I was hoping for a lot more vitriol, more intense sniping and more edgy interactions that would make the sparks between them ignite more spectacularly. But if it was the enemies-to-lovers angle that drew me in from the start, Dani/Sean's story ended up more like a frenemies-to-lovers tale, with a mock-rivalry vibe than true, barbed hostility pinging around between them which was what I'd been salivating to read

Instead, Dani/Sean got a little more of a gentle nudge towards each other as their banter and rivalry whittled down to caring and company the moment Sean started his recovery from his accident with Dani, courtesy of Marvel and its huge compendium of movies. They work their own issues out along at the same time as Kaye draws them together with revelations of each other's 'softer' sides, and finally get their HEA when it becomes clear they can't live without each other.

I'm not entirely sure how to put this through, but I think I was looking at wanting more depth (more angst, maybe?), more rawness and more digging deep into their vulnerabilities.

This book does go into all of those...only not enough.

There's very little focus on firefighting or the military itself; rather it's on characters and the ties-that-bind shaping the story. In any case, this is an easy, fast read which I flew through just wanting to see how Dani/Sean sorted themselves out.

I’ve been waiting patiently (for the most part) for a new Laura Kaye book and my wait finally paid off with this emotional romance! FIGHTING THE FIRE was sexy, beautifully written, and had Kaye’s perfect brand of humor. I’ve always loved Laura Kaye’s characters and how she develops them and it was great to be reading her books again. Sean was especially a great hero; he’s really funny but also this wonderful mix of cocky and vulnerable. His abusive father has left him with some messed up ideas of his worth but he usually plays it off with humor and deflects anyone from realizing what he really thinks. As Dani spends more time with Sean she realizes what he’s doing and I adored the moments where she built Sean up and showed him that he was worth love and care.

I loved Dani as much as I loved Sean; she’s this kickass ex-military nurse and she doesn’t take crap from anyone. She’s tough and not afraid to speak her mind in addition to being a loyal friend. Sean and Dani were perfect for each other! Overall, this was a really enjoyable read and a great addition to the WARRIOR FIGHT CLUB series and I hope we’ll get more soon.

Content Warning: Dani lost her husband in the military and partly blames herself for not being there to help him as a combat nurse; on page grief; Sean’s father was abusive and really affected his self worth; on page motorcycle accident with minor injuries

Favorite Quotes:

She could handle hot Sean Riddick being an asshole, but not hot Sean Riddick being a good guy. The hot good guy was a whole helluva lot harder to resist.

The broad shoulders. The way his ink-covered back muscles flexed. The taut roundness of his ass. And oh, man, that ass. Dead. She was dead.

FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH ONE OF A VARIETY OF SOURCES. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!

I really don't know how I feel about this book. It was delayed so long that I've forgotten everything about the series, what I liked, what I disliked, all of it. That would be a good thing, but it's left me in a place where I really don't know what to say about this book. It wasn't a bad read, but it wasn't a great read either. The characters were easy to connect with, to the point where I wound up crying near the end of the book, but they also didn't feel that memorable either. I got to the end and was just like "Eh, ok." and that's sad for a book that was so anticipated. I hope that once I go back and read everything in order, I'll have a different perspective on this story.

This is such a great series. I love the premise of the Warrior Fight Club. This club gives the veteran’s in the story an outlet for their pent up aggression and feelings after returning from their time in the service. Sean and Daniela have been dancing around each through the whole series. They finally give in to their attraction for one night after a party. What happens next is a whole lot of sexual tension and faux irritation that deflects from their actual feelings. I really enjoyed reading about these two strong individuals. Their story had a wonderful plot and was just a really sweet, and hot, romance.

The books in this series do standalone but have recurring characters.

I didn’t read book 1 but after reading this one, I really want to go back and read it. I enjoy reading this author and this series is so different. Daniela and Sean had this hate relationship but it was just a front since they secretly really wanted each other. So enjoyable to see each of them grow and fall in love. Enjoyable story from start to finish

4.25 STARS—FIGHTING THE FIRE is the third full-length instalment in Laura Kaye’s contemporary, adult WARRIOR FIGHT CLUB erotic, military, romance series focusing on a number of retired military personnel who meet at the local WFC headed by Army Ranger Moses Griffin. This is former US Navy and current firefighter Sean Riddick, and former US Black Hawk and current nurse Daniela England’s story line. FIGHTING THE FIRE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Sean and Dani) FIGHTING THE FIRE follows the frenemies to lovers relationship between former US Navy and current firefighter Sean Riddick, and former US Black Hawk and current nurse Daniela England. Months earlier Dani and Sean had a one -night stand but in the ensuing months Dani struggled with regret in the face of the upcoming anniversary of her husband’s death. An accident outside of the Warrior Fight Club involving Sean pushed Dani to take care of our story line hero, a push that would place our couple together for the foreseeable future but as their relationship turns into something more, Dani begins to pull away, leaving Sean wondering where it all went wrong. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Dani and Sean, and the potential fall-out as Dani continues to struggle with the death of her husband, as Sean battles the demons from the past.

Dani England knows loss but the loss of her husband was the final straw. Struggling to move on, Dani would join the WFC gym, where she would meet firefighter Sean Riddick, the man whose penchant for super heroes would find Dani wishing for a super hero of her own. Sean Riddick’s family life had been a living h*ll but now he considers his fellow first responders as his family and friends but Dani England was a someone he wanted in his life, if only he were able to get past the barriers she erected around her heart.

The relationship between Dani and Sean is one of second chances, of a sorts, following a one-night stand months before. Dani continued to push away our hero at every opportunity but Sean wasn’t willing to back down with a try. An accident would pull our couple together, an accident that could have very well ended our hero’s career. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including the members of the WFC: Marine Noah Cortez, Ranger Moses Griffin, diving instructor Tara Hunter, MMA coaches John ‘Mack’ McPherson, Billy Parrish and Shayna, Leo ‘Hawk’ Hawkins, Jesse, Jud, Jayne, and Colby Richmond. The camaraderie is friendly and fun.

FIGHTING THE FIRE is a story of family, friendships, acceptance and love. The premise is captivating and emotional; the romance is passionate; the characters are dynamic and charismatic.

Laura Kaye is BACK!! This final installment in the Warrior Fight Club series was perfect!

Daniela England is a former Army helicopter evac nurse, who now works in the ER. She's also a member of the Warrior Fight Club, and sparring with her friends helps keep her demons at bay. Her husband, who was also in the Army, died in combat 6 years ago, and she's been protecting her heart ever since. After a lifetime of her loved ones leaving her too soon, she's determined to never risk her emotions on love again. But, another fighter in the group gets under her skin in all the ways she's been trying to avoid. So, she responds with sarcasm, and they have a strong frenemies vibe, until one night their chemistry blazes out of control. They both decide it can't happen again, but then a motorcycle accident changes everything between them.

Sean Riddick, is a former Navy man, and a firefighter, and he loves his job. He also loves all the benefits he gets from being a part of the Warrior Fight Club. He feels like he's damaged goods, after growing up with an abusive father, and losing friends in the service, that he feels responsible for. The spark between him and Dani is huge, but he knows it can't go anywhere. Until it does, once, and he thinks that's all he'll get. But after he gets into a motorcycle crash, and she steps up to help him out, he wonders if there could be more to their banter after all.

Sean and Dani's back-and-forth was excellent, and their connection jumped off the page. It was also clear to everyone who knew them, so all their WFC friends were always wondering when they would finally combust. I loved watching them dig beneath the surface and truly get to know each other during Sean's recovery. They both discovered how little they actually knew about each other, and found out how much they had in common.

The side characters here, all of Dani and Sean's friends from the WFC, were all seen in the prior books, and it was fun to catch up with them and see how their lives are continuing on. They often acted as a sounding board for the main couple, and they all really care for each other.

The dead ex trope is not usually my jam, but it worked for me in this book, I think because of the length of time that had passed, and how it was all laid out. I thought that Dani was finally ready to move on, and it felt like a realistic time line. Other tropes in this book that I always love, that also worked well here included frenemies to lovers, and sick bed/one caring for the other. I really believed in Sean and Dani as a couple, and I wanted them to figure things out.

I got teary eyed a couple times in this book, and then full-on sobbed towards the end. It was such a beautiful story, and the characters came to mean so much to me! I really enjoy this author's words, and I'm so glad she's back to writing them!

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. This review is my personal opinion, voluntarily given.

Series: Warrior Fight Club #3
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Firefighter Sean Riddick keeps the demons at bay by working constantly and going to Warrior Fight Club, even if it means dealing with Daniela England. She drives him nuts but he can’t forget how good they are together. When he gets injured, Daniela steps in to help him and they find they have more in common than they thought.

I have been eagerly waiting for this book since 2018, and it did not disappoint. Laura Kaye always does an amazing job at writing emotionally powerful stories with wonderful characters. Daniela and Sean have been frenemies since they met but after one night with too much alcohol leads to a one night stand, everything changes. As you can imagine, both of them are determined to keep their walls up but that doesn’t work after Sean’s accident.

Both of them have experienced loss and deprivation throughout their lives and have learned to cope in different ways. Daniela is determined to live but refuses to open her heart to love again. The more time she spends with Sean though, the more she realizes that she hasn’t really been living since her husband's death. Her grief was so powerful and heartbreaking that I just wanted to reach through the book to hug her. Sean uses self-deprecating humor constantly because his life has taught him that he isn’t worthy. It was heartbreaking to see him constantly put himself down, especially after you learn why he believes he isn’t worthy. Daniela and Sean both have a lot of barriers but together they learned to lean on each other and healed from their pasts.

As you can tell, I really enjoyed everything about this book. Another great thing about this series is just the comradery between all the members of the WFC. They are family and you could really see it in this one when they all rushed to take care of Sean and be there for him during his recovery. I just love that we get to see how the previous couples, and other members, lives have changed or will be changing in the future. I can’t wait for the next book, which I hope is Mo’s because I really want him to fall in love.

Trigger Warnings:
- Daniela’s husband died six years ago and she is still grieving.
- Motorcycle accident, on page
- Parental death mentioned
- Parental verbal abuse mentioned

This book had me at first page. I’ve been in a fantasy mood lately, so when I picked this one up I was doubting if I was in the right mood for a romance. I’m so glad I picked it up! Laura Kaye never fails me, she’s definitely one of my favorite romance authors.

I was intrigued by Daniela and Sean’s dynamics from their first interaction in the story. They trained together in the Warrior Fight Club, they had an amazing group of friends there and they ended up seeing each other a lot. Sean was a badass firefighter and Daniela was a great nurse. Their chemistry was insane but she wasn’t ready to give in to their attraction. Well… not again. But then Sean had an accident and Daniela swooped in to help him during his recovery. These two were already struggling to resist each other, being in close proximity in Sean’s house meant the pull between them became impossible to ignore. The banter between this two was freaking amazing! Their moments together were hot, steamy, sweet and so, so funny! I loved the fact that Sean was such a superhero fan and I laughed a lot with his Deadpool lines. I also loved how Sean introduced the Marvel universe to Daniela and how they bonded watching Marvel’s movies.

They were so good together and it was amazing watching them opening up to each other. I really loved their story. I really liked Daniela’s background story, I can’t speak about the Kiowa tribe representation but I enjoyed her deep connection with her granny and how much she missed her and the Kiowa community.

The final conflict between them punched me in the stomach, I get that Daniela needed to deal with certain aspects of her past but I wished that it had been done differently. Keeping it vague here to not spoil the story.

Fighting the Fire was a sweet, hot, steamy, emotional, beautifully written romance with amazing characters and so much banter! Highly entertaining, I definitely enjoyed this one and I recommend it.

This is the third full length novel in the series but can easily be read as a standalone. Cheers to Laura |Kaye for her fight to get back to sharing her stories with us. Are you ready for fun flirty banter with a side of stinging emotions and guilt? These characters grow so much throughout this book, learning that they are not the to blame for a past that was out of their control. They are not worth less because of the tragedies they have encountered.

Dani England is a widowed ex military who works as a nurse in the local hospital. She still struggles with the loss of her husband and has since kept people at arms length. Over the years she has dealt with many losses and keeps the number of people important to her at a minimum hoping to keep the pain at a minimum. Witnessing fellow Warrior Fight Club member and friend be part of an accident, she jumps into full healer mode and spends time helping him. She wasn't prepared for the feeling that start to develop when spending extra time with him.

Sean Riddick is not stranger to the losses and guilt felt from losing fellow soldiers, friends and brothers. He carries around a heavy guilt for his actions on that horrible day. But it doesn't stop him from being the best firefighter he can be still today. Idle time is hard for him to keep out of his head so he keeps himself busy taking extra shifts and covering for many when they need time off. When an accident finds him stuck at home and unable to use his normal outlets, he is worried. But when he realized that Dani has self appointed herself as his helper and will be spending more time with her he can't say he minds. Who wouldn't want to spend time with a beautiful woman? If is he was being honest with himself he would like to test the waters that were warmed with a one night stand many months ago.

Could this be a healing for both Sean and Dani. Helping them open up and share more of themselves. A start to what could be something what is worth fighting for?

3.5-4 stars. Fighting the Fire is book three in the Warrior Fight Club series. We finally get Sean and Daniella's story. In previous books, we had a glimpse at their bickering way of flirting during fight club together. In this book, we learn the history behind their characters. Daniela is a nurse and was in the military. Her husband was also in the miitary and he died in combat. She carries so much guilt over the circumstances surrounding his death and has not fully healed from that loss. Sean is a former miltary man turned firefighter. He also has some demons in the past, but covers them with his jokey, fun time guy personality. The two of them have had chemistry and an unnamed connection for awhile, but she feels guilty for it and he is not the relationship type so he doesn't push it. But when Sean is in a motorcycle accident, Daniela steps up to help take care of him. As they spend time together, they start to realize they are both still deserving of love and they could have a future together.

This was a good story. I liked Sean and Daniela as characters and together as a couple. I did feel like they liked each other a lot by the end, but I wasn't sure I felt love between them just yet. I did think they had great potential to fall in love and be together forever, though. I was really happy that they were able to overcome their emotional issues and find their HEA with each other. They both deserved to be happy and to have a lighter, brighter future.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and emotional read. Both Sean and Daniela has some pretty heavy issues to overcome and I was happy they came out of that journey on the other side, happy together. I enjoy this series and I hope this is not the end of it. I look forward to more from Ms. Kaye in the future!

I was lucky enough to be given an ARC of the latest installment in Laura Kaye's Warrior Fight Club series. The WFC is a group of retired military personnel, who get together to practice their martial arts skills and support each other as they deal with the emotional aftermath of their service and learn to thrive in the civilian world again.
Fighting the Fire is the story of Daniela and Sean, who are secondary characters earlier in the series. Like all the of the primary characters in this series, they are both suffering from PTSD and not handling it well. I love Laura Kaye's books, but my biggest disappointment in this series has been how she handled the HEAs and their mental health. They've been a bit too "just meet your match and everything will be magically better" for my taste. I do recognize that these are fiction, not handbooks or counselling sessions, and nobody wants their fiction to include detailed descriptions of the daily fight for mental balance, but... I'd be thrilled if the epilogues included our heroes making time to talk to a professional. I don't need to see a session, just a casual mention that they are doing it.
Leaving that aside though, these books live up to my expectations for Laura's work. Sean and Daniela are robust, complex characters who learn how much they have in common after a traffic accident leaves Sean in need of Daniela's nursing support. Close proximity forces them beyond their adversarial relationship and shows them how good they are together both in and out of bed. As I expect from Laura, the sex scenes are hot - given that the mechanics of sex are pretty straightforward, I especially appreciate how her couples all vary in terms of their desires and skills. Those of you who prefer "fade to black" may want to skip the steamy scenes here, as there is some mild domination and kink.
Those of you who follow Laura on social media will know that this book was delayed several times due to health, computer mishap, pandemic, and who knows what else. It began to feel like we'd never get it! But having flipped to the first page and then read straight through in one session, I feel like it was worth the wait.

With this one it was fun to see Sean and Daniela work through their issues and how they did it together, when at the start they were always snipping at each other. As bad as Sean's accident was, it was a good thing because it forced the two of them together. Sean wanted Daniela's medical knowledge on his injuries and she felt the need to make sure he was ok. It gave the time where the snipping didn't happen, they were in a weird truce, one where they were able to get to know each other and realize there was something there, they just had to be strong enough to grab it. While it was iffy for a bit, I'm glad they both came to their senses and reached out, both deserved all the happiness they found.

This fast paced book takes us back to the Warrior Fight Club (WFC), where we get to see some of our favorite characters from previous books in the series get their HEA. This is the third book in the series, and can be read as a standalone, but characters are interwoven throughout the series.

Dani and Sean have this great banter, which of course is due to that fine line between enemies and lovers. So much tension!

This book shows how each the Hero and Heroine really let down their defenses to let the other in. There’s a lot of baggage for these two, and Laura Kaye does it beautifully.

Great story!

Wow! Have to say I loved Dani and Sean's story! Each WFC has been better than the last and this one was definitely worth the wait! Each of these characters has overcome so much and were so due a HEA, I'm really happy they got theirs! And that it includes so much humor!!! Great story with really fantastic characters!!!

I enjoyed this book especially after waiting so long for it. Daniela and Sean were such a great Frenemies and they had everyone fooled into thinking they couldn’t stand to be around each other. Though it all comes out because Sean gets hurt and Dani is there to take care of him. Sean was such an irreverent character with so many layers and Dani also had a layers that people didn’t see. And the Deadpool quotes were spot on.

Fighting The Fire is the fourth book in the Warrior Fight Club. A military and sports romance told in dual POV by Daniela England and Sean Riddick . Can be read as a standalone but the characters from the previous books all make an appearance as they are all friends and veterans. This is a lighthearted, funny and enjoyable read. Frenemies that are actually perfect for each other.

Daniela is an ER nurse at the local hospital since leaving her combat medic position when she lost her army husband to an IED. She is still grieving Anthony and feels she can’t move on. She uses the fight club to cope with the survivor’s guilt she still suffers and the feeling everyone leaves her because she has lost her whole family.
Sean is a firefighter and uses the club to fight the demons of his past. His childhood was hard and then he experienced a horrific incident when in the Navy. He’s never had a real relationship as convinced he is destined to hurt those around him. He is more vulnerable than he lets on because he’s become an expert at using humour to deflect any concerns.
Daniela and Sean met five years ago at the Warrior Fight Club and became friends. They both felt the attraction between them and gave into it eight months ago. Sean can’t forget how good they were together and would love to do it again. Daniela feels it was a mistake and doesn’t want to repeat it but her body doesn’t agree with her head! Sean has honoured her wishes to keep it a secret even though all the other veterans sense the weird chemistry and friction between them.
Both are sarcastic and their banter is hilarious throughout the book. Sean loves to tease and flirt, he is full of innuendos with the sense of humour of a teenager. Daniela finds him arrogant and infuriating but has to admit he is hot, especially as she know how good he is in bed !

One night after a session at the club, Dani witnesses Sean have a motorbike accident and her need to help kicks in. She looks after him as he recovers and their friendship develops as they watch Marvel films. She notices that although he in pain and scared he still tries to make her laugh. He is always so strong, both in body and personality, that it is quite a shock to see him vulnerable and having to accept her help.
She is pleasantly surprised by him as there turns out to be many more layers to his character and she finds out they have lots in common. She hadn’t realised how self deprecating he was and how she’d wrongly judged him. She enjoys his company and sees he is actually a good guy who is genuinely concerned about her. She confused and irritated by her feelings for him when the sweet playful, nerdy, super-hero-loving Sean becomes harder to resist. As things between them hot up she is overwhelmed by a sense of shame and guilt for giving in to her desire for him.
They end up telling each other things they never speak about. It was stunning and emotional when he slowly opens up and tells her about his past, however, also sad that in return she could only tell him some him things from hers. Sean thinks she is better than him and can’t believe she cares and stands up for him. He thinks she helping out of a sense of duty and hates needing her help but enjoys seeing another side to her when she funny and laid back.
Things come to heartbreaking and explosive climax when they have to either accept or deny their feelings. He thinks she too good for him and he doesn’t deserve her. She must accept the possibility of falling in love again and put the past behind her?
I cheered when they finally surrender to the chemistry and desire burning between them.
Great tension as they struggled with what being together meant as neither expected it to happen.
A lovely story of two people finding something they needed in someone else. It was uplifting seeing how she made him believe in himself. Absolutely loved all the Deadpool quotes and the sexy eyebrow movements from Sean. Inspired ending and epilogue to finish a heartwarming story.

Merged review:

“You’ll not only say it, Dani. You’ll beg me for it.”

“Uh, dude, your head took quite a hit if you think we’re in a love story.”

“Whatever it is you want, whatever it is you need, you can use me to have it.”

Things come to heartbreaking and explosive climax when they have to either accept or deny their feelings. He thinks she too good for him and he doesn’t deserve her. She must accept the possibility of falling in love again and put the past behind her?

Ms. Kaye's Warrior Fight Club series comes to a rousing end with this emotional tale of two wounded warriors finding healing through their long-simmering attraction (leading to a one night stand) and a motorcycle accident he needs help recovering from! Theirs is a journey that put them, and readers, through the wringer in a story that pulled at my heartstrings and brought a tear or two to my eye along the way. Aiding them in their journey was a cast of appealing secondary characters, ones seen in previous books, who are a supportive group with their subtle matchmaking ways and heartwarming words of wisdom. Together they made this a powerful read that is an unforgettable entry in the series.

Daniela England is a nurse who lost her husband six years ago and has kept her heart closed off ever since. The loss of her husband isn't the only thing weighing on her though as there's all the other soldiers she couldn't save who still haunt her today. Being a member of the fight club helps keep her demons at bay, but it also keeps her in view of a man who's gotten under her skin and won't let go. Though she's scared of putting her heart on the line she's having trouble denying the attraction she has for him in a relationship full of push and pull moments that play out as the story progresses. Sean Riddick is a veteran too...and now a firefighter who finds himself constantly coming into contact with Dani. His own difficult past has him concerned about his ability to make a future, a HEA with someone else, because of an abusive childhood and the loss of fellow soldiers over the years that has him feeling like a failure. Being part of the fight club helps him work out some of his anger but it's the heartfelt talks he and Dani soon start engaging in once he starts his rehabilitation that finally puts them on the road to HEA and an ending that made me feel good.

On a whole this was a well-crafted romance, a slow-burn tale full of push/pull moments that made for a story teeming with sexual tension. Dani and Sean were crackling together in interactions that felt more like foreplay at times. Balancing out the combustible moments between them were scenes of deep talks that had them laying their emotions bare and had me rooting for them from the first page to the last. Though this wasn't a unique storyline it was an emotionally engaging one that warmed my heart and captivated my soul through the power of love flowing between Dani and Sean.

“Live where you fear to live, Dani”

Daniela England has spent the past 5 plus years letting fear control her decisions. Other than being a part of Warrior Fight Club, she goes to work and mostly keeps to herself. She has spent so much of her time alone, losing too many people she loved, that going about her days with few attachments is just safer.

Sean Riddick is a sarcastic, adrenaline loving firefighter who love verbally, and physically, sparring with Daniela at Warrior Fight Club. Any chance he gets he is enjoys teasing her and irritating her, though it is all in good fun. Sean uses his humor as a barrier, so no one truly knows what he has been through and what type of man he believes himself to be. His childhood and his time in the Navy have shaped him into a man who believe that being alone is best for himself, and anyone around him, because he can’t possibly be good enough to be important to anyone.

When Dani witnesses Sean get injured in a motorcycle crash, mother matters to her except being there to help him and make sure he is going to be ok. As a nurse, she feels she needs to be there through the entire process of recovery. From riding with him in the ambulance, to making sure he doesn’t overdo anything when he gets home, Dani stays by Sean’s side. The more time these two spend together, the more they realize, they are more alike than they ever imagined. Bonding over movies, snacks, and life, Dani and Sean cannot resist the fire that exists between them.

As these two get closer, their insecurities become a bigger hindrance and eventually they both must decide if they can love themselves enough to take down their walls and love one another. Words that Dani’s Granny told her, so many years before come back to her. And she must decide if she can let herself live where her heart and her mind feels the most fear, or if she is going to let the fear ruin her chance to be with a man who can be everything she ever wanted....and they can both support one another, and love one another, in ways they both deserve.

Fighting the Fire is the third book in Kaye's Warrior Fight Club. It starts off with the two main characters already knowing each other so I really expect the author to do the falling in love early in the book thing. I was so glad that she made us and them work for "that love".

At first, I couldn't understand why they were so snippy at each other. More so Dani but Sean gave as good as he got. You'd think at first that these two hated each other until you realized what they were doing is foreplay. Plus it didn't help that Dani has some issues she hasn't worked through.

I really liked these two together and it has nothing to do with the fact that they both love Deadpool. Or that Sean is more a Marvel fan. Both are just a plus in my eyes.

I will say that the road to happiness wasn't easy for these two. Both fought it and felt that they couldn't be happy. Silly people. At times though Dani's issues kinda pissed me off. She was really rude sometimes to Sean for nothing. Since I understood why she was acting this way I gave her a pass but I still felt so bad for Sean.

The ending of this story is so good. I love how it worked out for them and beyond. Thanks, Kaye for giving us just that little more to see where the characters are headed after the "I love yous". If you really like stories where the characters have overcome things in their pasts and still at times deal with them then you'll love this series. I will tell you that if you are not a fan of foul language then this might not be for you. It might have been a long wait for Fighting the Fire but it was well worth the wait.

Daniela/Dani England has built a wall around her heart, the anniversary of her husband's death is comin up and she's fighting to get through this year. The camaraderie of the Warrior's Fight Club does much to help as does the physical exertion.

Sean Riddick doesn't think he's worthy of anything or anyone. The Fight Club helps him deal with that as does his job as a firefighter where he often takes on extra shifts to keep from thinking.

Both of our main characters have forms of PTSD on top of their survivors guilt. When they spar whether physical or verbal it's intense and fueled with innuendos.

Dani doesn't get all his references, she's never seen Deadpool. After an intense sparring match where Dani gets hit a bit hard she snipes at him and afterward he had decided not to go to dinner with the group. Dani wants to apologize but he has taken off on his motorcycle, even as she tried to catch him. As she watches he is hit by a box truck and goes flying to the pavement.

An ER nurse, she stays with him and rides in the ambulance keeping him calm. His injuries while not life threatening could end his firefighting career.

I love the way Dani stays by his side, and once he's home she cares for him as they watch first the Deadpool Movies then start working their way through all the Marvel. They get to know each other away from others and find they have much in common and there's more than a little spark between them.

A wonderful journey to healing for both, that includes a simmer to sizzle romance with lots of laughter and some tears as well.

I also just realized I missed a book that is a crossover. I will be reading that soon.

This book was so beyond WORTH THE WAIT!! I have been jonesing for this book since I finished Fighting For What's His. This whole series has been such an eye opening series into the struggle of military members and their families. The author went through battles akin to her characters to get this book to us, but it was most definately worth the wait!
Sean and Dani initially reminded me of grade school boys and girls...."he pulls her pigtails because he likes her and doesn't know how to show it" kind of thing. They have such chemistry that it is palpable as you read it, but they are both dealing with their own personal struggles and fighting the pull to each other.
When Sean is injured in a motorcycle accident, Dani (who is a nurse) steps us to help him with his recovery. Put two people with magnetic pull in close proximity to each other and they will either kill each other or give in to the pull between them. Well, since it's a romance, you know it's gonna happen...but they are gonna have to work through their own personal issues. Dani is still struggling with her survivor's guilt over her husband's death. Sean is dealing with his own demons losing his men in battle. Laura Kaye has written two very strong characters, who are clearly the medicine that the other needs to help them heal and open themselves up to love and a possibility of a future.
This book will pull you in from the beginning...you will laugh, smile, gasp, cry and feel every bit of their pain. Laura Kaye has once again delivered a heart warming HEA that shows us the inner struggles of grief, survivor's guilt and fear to move on. Read this book. Read this series. You won't regret a second of it.
