This story takes place during the French and Indian War. The French and Indian War comprised the North American theater of the worldwide Seven Years' War of 1756–63. It pitted the colonies of British America against those of New France. Major Madison Scott is serving in the war. While on leave and visiting his cousin, he meets the lovely 15 year old Elanna Hanssen. They begin a correspondence as he serves in the war; and as Madison becomes better acquainted with Elanna, they both begin to develop feelings for one another. But Elanna's extreme interest in the war also draws her to a local journalist. As he vies for her attention, he resorts to extreme measures to try and capture her heart.
Elena had a wisdom beyond her years but at the same time still had some of the innocence of a teenager. I enjoyed the letters between Madison and Elenna as their relationship developed. The separation between them did cause problems especially as to whether or not Mr. Witherspoon was relaying truthful information regarding Major Scott. Miller did a very good job of portraying this turbulent time period in American history and definitely showed the obvious research she had done.
The book is a quick read and very clean. No bad language, no sexual situations - just a nice romance. All of the characters are very easy to love and I really wanted to know what would happen next. I really liked Elanna. She is very independent, always thinks before she acts, prays for guidance in her life, and accepts the consequences of her actions. She is the kind of girl I hope my daughter grows up to be.
I really liked this one! Kept my attention intact-I stayed up late to finish it-had a great plot, neat characters, and a great setting. The only thing I didn't like was the Madison Scott's cousin made him seem like a playboy instead of a very nice, respectable, and showy in words gentleman. I'm definately rereading this one and I hope you'll read it!
This was a quick read for me. I enjoyed the author's style, and how the story was told over the space of several years, giving Elanna and Madison time for their friendship and initial interest in each other to grow into more. I didn't find the Christian message as strong in this book as in the previous one, as both main characters already clearly trusted in God before the outset of the story. That said, I thought the way Raelene counselled her daughter to give her confusion about what to believe about Madison into God's hands was spot on. All in all, an enjoyable book.
Separated from Madison when he leaves to fight the French and Indians, Elanna Hanssen must choose between her heart and her head, especially when Madison's integrity is questioned.

My review:
Quills and Promises is one of the better Heartsong historical novels I've read and truly hard to put down. The story swept me away and carried me back to a time when the French and the British were fighting over the same land before the American Revolution rocked the country. The atrocities were horrific, but thankfully weren't described in detail. The romantic elements in Quills was delightful and had the kind of emotional pull that makes you sigh as you turn the pages. The author did a masterful job with character emotion and showing the longing the hero and heroine had for each other. Their relationship developed beautifully over time and was very believable. Both characters were extremely likeable, too. The majority of their contact was through letters (hence the "quills" in the title) but that didn't take away from the story at all. In fact, I think it made me sigh more. I am definitely going to add Amber Miller to my favorites list for historical fiction Heartsong Presents titles.
*sigh* Is it not fabulous when as a reader, you turn the last page of a book and the first thing you do is sigh in complete contentment. Well that is my reaction and I am certain many others experience with the second Promises book from Amber Miller "Quills & Promises". It tells the story of the daughter of the characters from the first book, "Promises, Promises" and is complete on it's own as a stand alone as well. I cannot wait to read more from this author.
The story took me into the time of the French & Indiana war, and I was able to meet people and learn personalities and experiences that I have not had before. It was great. One of my favorite movies is "The Patriot" and even though that was the Revolutionary War, this story reminded me of it, but it was better. In this story we have to characters that write letters through out the course of war and you find out things about the war as well as personalities. The best part that makes the story in the book better than that movie, is the devotion to God and even though the desire for retaliation is there, the act is not. That is something that is so hard, but so full of Christ's love as an example.
I highly recommend the stories from Amber Miller to anyone craving a little romance in a historical setting.
The second in the series, Elanna Hanssen is the daughter of Raelene and Gustaf. Elanna meets a handsome soldier just before he leaves to fight in the French and Indian War. Always a writer, Elanna starts a long correspondence with Major Scott. Her faith in him is shaken when a journalist reports the bad behavior of Major Scott. Can her feelings be trusted through the distance and years? A good read with good history tucked inside.
