Stardrives. Powerful, beautiful, bio-mimetic energy in its purest form. A benevolent gift meant to launch humanity into a new age of space travel. They were the hope for the future. The key to the next stage in human discovery. But every gift has its price. Nearly a thousand years after Earth took its place in the network of galactic commerce, the planet is depleted of resources and on the edge of collapse. Can stardrive technology bring the Earth back to life? Adventurer Axel Ryan is betting his life that it can. But there aren't any stardrives left to be found on Earth, and ships capable of interstellar travel are hard to come by. His only choice is to enlist the aid of mercenary pirates to steal one. With the stakes high, and the future of Earth on the line, does it matter he'll have to betray the love of his life? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer has always been Element Cruz's motto. And it couldn't be more true with Axel Ryan. Drugged, abandoned, and her ship stolen, she's more than ready to let the price on his head kill him. Except Axel holds the key to saving humanity. And if there's one thing Ellie can't refuse, it's the chance to win.
Although working as a baker for many years, writing has been a passion for Chris for some time, starting in high school and reigniting again in 2006, when he first got the inspiration to begin writing 'The Man In Black.' After completing that project eight years later, he took part in NaNoWriMo in November 2014, culminating into a project named 5PM. Deciding to self-publish, 5PM came out in February 2015, and then The Man In Black in August. 2016 saw the release of 7PM, and in that same year, his writing path met with that of Canadian author Kate Reedwood. A mutual respect of each other's work ignited an interest in working together, creating the Legacy Hunter series, the first of which to come out in July 2017. Apart from writing, Chris enjoys travelling, reading, watching movies and all things geeky. He resides in Coffs Harbour with his wife and three children. Chris will be at Nexus Con on July 29 celebrating the release of the first book in his Legacy Hunter series.
Normally I don't read books in this genre but this book really intrigued me. I was drawn in by a wonderful and very creative storyline. It didn't feel as though I was reading a book written by two authors. I really enjoyed watching the characters relationships develop. Axel is the main focus of the story but Ellie tends to steal the show every now and then. I have yet to read a book like this. It is a must read for any fan of Sci-fi! Can't wait to read the next in the series as the ending was something I hadn't seen coming!
Normally when I see a book written by two authors I steer clear because ideas don't tend to match up and the plot can be confusing. However I decided to take a chance with this book and was delightfully rewarded. To be fair I have read Chris's work before and I am a fan and while I did see hints of his writing style through out the book, I also picked up a new writing style that seemed to blend well with Chris's. I have not read anything by Kate Reedwood yet but after reading Legacy Hunter I am keen to read more of her work. To the story itself, I was interested from the first page. Normally I can guess what's going to happen by the end of the book but this story kept me guessing until the end, with plenty of twists and turns. I loved the characters, my favourite being Ellie, she does not take crap from anyone and is fearless. Can not wait for the next instalment!
Absolutely amazing! i couldn't put the book down and cannot wait for the next in the series. I love the the relationship between Ellie and Axel as its not your typical romance and im sure we all know a Rose. i cannot wait to discover the depth of Hendrix betrayal and what he actually is! Could this become the next Harry Potter? Maybe it certainly has the potential!
I really wanted to like this book. The plot was strong and the action was everything I love about scifi. I love supporting indie Australian authors but as a female reader, the sexualisation and characterisation of the female characters in this book was too bad for me to continue reading. Most of the main characters thoughts about the love interest is about her body, with it going so far as to have the main character be reminded of the love interest when talking about a "pleasure-bot". Ellie (the love interest) was a likeable and interesting character to read from the perspective of but Axel (the main character) felt like his personality was indecisive. He was too much of a dick for his motivations to make sense but not enough of a dick for his actions to make sense. I understand the presence of the crudeness to the character and it worked for a character like Hendricks, but with Axel it felt out of place. Another issue I had was the racial stereotyped undertones of the Goober Chag. As an Australian, the descriptions of their tribal culture, religion, and clothing felt like it was a bit of a caricature of none western cultures of people. Along with this, there was the description of a character as "half breed" because she was half human and alien. While I think this could have provided an excellent way to represent some important issues within the story, I felt like this opportunity wasn't taken and it made the addition of these factors feel cheap. Finally, I feel like the author didn't trust the readers enough to add any subtext, going for a "tell, no show" approach to the writing.
Axel Ryan is a human in a dystopian universe where earth is dying and he is trying to find a way to save it. Axel's love interest, Ellie (Element) Cruz, has her own secret agenda; to escape her mother, and find her half-sister.
I am always amazed when I pick up a sci-fi book and the author, or in this case authors, are able to draw me into a completely imaginary world, and make it seem real. It always makes me wonder, how they come up with names for items, and creatures, and make them appear to be believable. Chris and Kate were able to do just that for me, with this first installment of their new Legacy Hunter series.
This story is mainly focused on Axel and his quest. It is fast paced, and action packed, with dangerous space pirates, strange goat-like aliens, a hit-man cyborg, and double-crossing friends.
From the beginning to the end, I found it hard to put down, and I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.
OMG I have a new favorite series!!! If you are a lover of any of those famous sci-fi movies, you are going to LOVE reading Queen Killer (Legacy Hunter Book 1)!!!! I have read both of these authors separately and their work is fantastic. Together, they are big bang explosive! This book has it all! Fast paced action, backstabbing friends, aliens (that are part goat!), planets in despair, romance, mystery, and the mother of all bitchy mothers. It is like a soap opera on steroids and I want to live in it! A fast paced plot that keeps the reader entertained and wanting more. (Arrrggg! I need book 2 like yesterday!) Can’t wait to see what these two authors have in store for the rest of this series! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique read.
Queen Killer (Legacy Hunter #1) is entertaining, well-written and original. Too many dystopian novels and series are quite similar, but this series displays quite a bit of originality and inventiveness, and everyone knows what a big fan I am of that. Axel and Ellie are not cookie-cutter protagonists and are actually very believable, something that is lacking in many books in this genre. The story is quite imaginative as well. I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of futuristic/dystopian genres or anyone looking for a solid, entertaining read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
If you have read either of these authors separately, you already know how fantastic their story telling is. Queen Killer (Legacy Hunter, 1) marries the talents of two exciting authors.
The world / universe Kate and Chris have set up is truly amazing. Earth is dying, interstellar travel is a must and alien life forms are a real threat. They have created some great aliens with strong character and descriptions that really form a great picture in your head.
The Legacy Hunter series is packed with action, adventure, double crossing villains, evil underhanded mothers, not forgetting a great storyline, and the smoking hot chemistry between Axel and Ellie, this new series will keep you wanting more! Highly recommend this new series. I cannot wait to see what this writing duo will come up with next! A copy was provided for an honest review. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I loved that I wasn’t able to predict what was going to happen every time. It made me keep guessing and kept me hooked.
Axel’s character development was great.
The world building in this was sensational. I could picture the swamp and the mountain just like a movie. That’s the feeling I like in a book!
Chris and Kate kept it simple enough to be a short book, but had enough details to fully immerse the readers. There’s also a couple of plot twists that really took me by surprise!
There were a few little errors (really instead of ready), but the majority of books have issues like this (Stephen King is a great example!) The only thing that stopped it from being a five-star for me was that it didn’t have the flowery, poetic narrative that I like so much. This rating might change in the future, as I said the same about Aristotle and Dante, and Draekora, both of which are now five-star.
Sci-Fi isn't always my genre of choice these days, although I did enjoy it a great deal when younger. I mention this because Queen Killer reminded me of the joy one could find in such adventures.
The story has a bit of everything - a hero wanting to save the world, a quest for family, love, betrayal, bounty hunters, great fight sequences, alien planets, curses, death, and of course powerful leaping goats.
As book one of a series it introduces the core elements from which it will grow, but also functions as it's own story. It has several fantastically defined characters, each with their own personalities, and reasons for being in the story. Everything is set up to make sense and avoid any logic holes best it can.
It's a short and fun read and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series...and not just to see if the goats appear again.
Described to me as Indiana Jones meets Star Wars and I have to say that's accurate!
This is a fun sci-fi action adventure and the pace rollicks along! Heinicke and Reedwood have clearly got some great teamwork going on here - you can't tell this is a collaboration. There are no differences in writing style between sections and the story flows well.
Axel Ryan is convinced that if he can find an ancient star-drive then he can solve the Earth's energy crisis and pretty much save the planet. However in doing so he must betray the woman he loves, Ellie, and work with a treacherous group of mercenaries. What follows is and action packed race for the star-drive, battles against space pirates / mercenaries and a hit man.
Looking for a light fun weekend read then this space adventure might fit the bill.
This is Book 1 in the Legacy Hunter series. This book is co-authored by Kate Reedwood and Chris Heinicke. I already knew that I loved Kate's style of writing, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I also liked Chris' style of writing too. Together these two authors put together one very kickass book!
The story is very well written and complex with wonderfully interesting characters. This book held my interest from start to finish and was very hard to put down. It was exciting and had great suspense. It is a fast paced book loaded with cool aliens, very bad villains, lots of mayhem and romance.
I absolutely loved this book! These 2 authors make a wonderful team! I can't wait to read Book 2 in this series! Well done! I highly recommend this book.
I was super excited to read this book, pre-ordered it even, but as often happens, life forced me to set it aside for a while. I kept trying to come back to it, getting in only a few pages at a time. I finally finished it and have to say, this series is going to be on my list of favorites.
The first few pages really suck you in and set the tone for adventures to come. The plot is interesting and unique, the action is good, and the characters have great personality.
I really like that this is a sci-fi story but it feels like an action adventure at the same time. Sci-fi with a touch of Indiana Jones.
I've already got the second book and can't wait to start it!
I am yet to finish the book but I am really thrilled with what I have read so far! Action and adventure are what I thrive on and this scifi series has been delivering my dose of both! It is well-paced, drawing you in right from the start which I love; the main characters are likeable and relatable - and the bonus for me was having the novel experience of encountering Australian towns where I have resided or visited be reinvented as futuristic scifi locations! It is such a refreshing twist to read a book of the calibre of international bestsellers that utilises interesting and unique settings etc instead of the standard formulae. Looking forward to the great adventures ahead!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Set 1000 years in the future, Axel Ryan sets out to save earth by reclaiming a alien stardrive capable of powering machinery to restore earth. In order to begin his search he has to steal the spaceship belonging to his long time lover. Things do not go to plan as he encounters bounty hunters, space pirates, primative inhabitants and a female seeking vengeance. A fast paced story full of unexpected twist and turns culminating an ending which will led into the next book. I can't wait to read the next adventure of Axel and his Star Queen.
This story is fast paced , exciting and so well written it draws you in from the start and never disappoints the whole way through. I have loved both Kate and Chris seperatley as writers but together they have created a world that is highly imaginative , their hero and heroine ( Axel and Ellie) have wonderful chemistry that jumps off the page. Secondary characters are fun and truly add to the story and help to move the story along nicely. A wonderful first book in the series that has left me wanting more from this great writing duo .
A small read but only one of many to come, Queen Killer grabs you at chapter one, and continues to do so until you close the book. I love all of Heinicke's books personally, but the partnership with Kate Reedwood has resulted in something truly special. I have been a reader all of my life, but this 'Starwarsesque' book had me thinking about the next chapter while cooking dinner for my family LOL, and I am fanging at the bit for Chapter 2 'Star Keeper'. Keep up the awesome work guys, I'm addicted already ;). I seriously think George Lucas needs to see this book!!. Cheers, Bianca ox
Got about 80% through and couldn't finish. The protagonist is dumb. Why does his group have so much trouble getting through tunnels only to have someone catch them so easily. I promised my uncle to keep a secret and the very next sentence to a new acquaintance is the secret. Dumb. He goes to elaborate schemes to steal a ship endangering the girl he loves and refuses her help. Dumb. He trusts an alien his tribe considers expendable. Reminds me a bit of Doc Savage series.
Loved this first up title in the Legacy Hunter series. Chris Heinicke and Kate Reedwood's sci-fi action/adventure has plenty going for it. An interesting cast of characters, who all seem to betrayal as their middle name, take us on an adventure across the galaxy, where history has a whole lot in store for the future. The world building and lore of the storytelling is excellent, the characters have great lines and keep you guessing and the end has more than a surprise or two waiting. Great read.

I really enjoyed this story! I thought the authors did a great job of combining their styles and story together. They obviously had a good connection artistically to create this. I especially loved Ellie. She was very kick butt!
I enjoyed this book by SA local, Chris, and Canadian Kate. It’s always a joy to find references to pop-culture and (as in this case) local communities. The characters are great, with strong females, and the plot is just getting started. I’m looking forward to the next story.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I loved this book. It has spaceships, aliens, romance, treachery, and adventure. The story line was very good and it was well edited. A good book if you like sci-fi.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I love a good sci-fi and this one is great. Action-packed, terrific plot with great characters. Can’t wait for the next in the series.
Must say it's not the normal style I would read but I am glad I picked it up and took a chance. The story is very interesting. I look forward to reading book two
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. An enjoyable book to read. Good storyline with good characters.
Great start to the series! Left me wanting to see what happens next! Colorful characters, lots of action, and lots of twists and turns. Definitely recommend!
Engaging read. This sets up this continuing series with slowly unfolding revelations about their world. A complex relationship. A wealthy mother wants revenge. Worth reading.
Loved this book. Charming, but dickish, hero, fun secondary characters, flying monsters. What else could a girl ask for. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series
