Heiress Lori Granger looks like a million bucks--and is famous for giving much of her fabulous fortune away. But her generosity has outstripped her checkbook, and not even her glamorous image and come-hither eyes can save her now. Certainly not with Jackson James in the picture . . . Hired by her dad's estate to control her spending, this CPA with linebacker shoulders and gray flannel suits invades her space, insults her dog, and refuses to loosen his grip on her trust fund.
Worse, he seems immune to her charms--unless she's close enough to kiss. Not a man to cross the line with a client, even when the attraction is hotter than a pair of Lori's highest sling-backs, Jackson agrees to help her find a husband to fulfill a condition of her father's will. Yet sharing her dreams with him makes Lori Could this infuriating Mr. Straight be the one to make them all come true?

It was a gloomy day outside my window today. Rain, overcast, and cold (well, cold for the South anyway). Since I needed a bit of a pick me up, I picked up Leanne Banks newest contemporary, “Trouble in High Heels”, hoping for a love story with some humor to brighten my day. BINGO! Instant mood changer!
Lori is a young, beautiful, shapely heiress with a heart of gold. She grew up with her father who controlled her through love and guilt. Since his death she’s given away staggering amounts of money. That’s what makes her feel good. She’s always been pretty sure a happy marriage and kids aren’t in the cards for her future, so she does her best to create her own happiness via generosity. Things are going well. Then a new accountant is assigned to her and he’s actually trying to tell her she has to stop giving away money and live on a…budget (gasp). Apparently dear old Dad added a codicil to his will and Lori must either marry or live on a (very generous) budget until she’s 30. That’s the last straw for Lori. No more controlling men…ever!
Jackson comes from a dirt poor background and has struggled hard to finally be a successful CPA. When his boss tells him he’s finally made full partner with a corner office, he’s thrilled. Then the back of his neck begins to tingle. WOW! The partners are giving him one of the biggest accounts the firm has…hey, wait a minute. Something’s just not right with this. If it sounds too good to be true, in Jackson’s experience, that means it’s downright horrible. After quickly looking through the file, he realizes he’s been given a promotion and a raise only because his firm expects him to say no a young, gorgeous, spoiled heiress. No problem.
These two are at loggerheads from day one. An heiress who’s been extremely sheltered and a hard-charging CPA with plans for the future-- they both want their way, and those ways are diametrically opposed! I didn’t like either one of them at first. I mean, hey, a young gorgeous heiress…I hate her already! And she has to live on a ridiculously high budget? Kill me now. But I actually grew to like Lori. She was smart and capable and just needed to do a bit of growing up. And Jackson? Well, he too came off rather gruff at first, but pretty soon I was cheering for both of them. Their gunfire repartee had me giggling and their heated attraction kept me reading. This was no ‘fall into bed’ story. They grew to be friends first and the love came afterward. There’s even a secondary romance that I would have liked to see have a book all its own. And the settings match the story perfectly.
“Trouble in High Heels” won’t have you thinking the philosophy of love. Nor will it tinker with your emotions. What Leanne Banks does well is combine hot romance and humor. So if that’s what you like, you’d do well to pick up a copy when it's released in March 2009.
3.5 stars. Scatterbrained heroine meets smart CPA. Light, fluffy entertainment with a feel good ending.
STORY BRIEF: Lori’s wealthy father Harlan never married her mother. Harlan had sole custody of Lori and raised her alone. Lori felt guilty for living a life of wealth. Harlan died six months ago. Since then Lori has been giving away large amounts of money to charities, some of them seeming frivolous, for example: instead of buying $10 teddy bears for firefighters to give to rescued children, her charity provides $200 collectible teddy bears. Another charity she supports takes preschoolers to the opera for cultural arts appreciation. Lori lacks self confidence and feels better when she gives to almost any charity that approaches her. Her father’s will provides for a yearly allowance until age 30 when she will receive a large distribution. In six months time she has already spent 4 years of her 6 year allowance. Her accounting firm recently assigned Jackson to help her budget and manage her funds. Lori refuses to live on a budget. Since the will gives her more money if she’s married, she decides to hire someone to marry her for six years with a divorce at age 30. She wants Jackson to find candidates for her to marry. He starts bringing her candidates, but word leaks out, and a huge number of men line up outside her home offering themselves. Jackson takes Lori to a ranch for awhile to escape the men. The ranch is a charity helping handicapped children. While there Lori cooks, cleans and helps with the horses and children. Jackson helps out as a handyman.
REVIEWER’S OPINION: Lori is frivolous and lacks good judgment, but she does have a good heart. She gains some strength and self confidence during her time on the ranch. Other characters added some interest. This story is like an ice cream sundae. Don’t expect anything deep. There is a wonderfully sizzling sex scene.
DATA: Story length: 266 pages. Swearing language: moderate. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 6. Total number of sex scene pages: 19. Setting: current day Dallas, Texas area. Copyright: 2009. Genre: contemporary romance.
the writing in this book was atrocious! My husband was able to translate the phrase "she felt like she was going down on an up elevator" for me, but I doubt I will ever be able to forget the description of "turgid nipples". oh wow! the characters were okay. Lori Jean was kinda annoying, and Jackson was just standard issue romantic hero. I did read the whole way through, so it's not the worst I've read, but I won't read it again. :P
Leanne Banks is a national #1 best-selling author of romance novels. She is the winner of the Romantic Times Career Achievement Awards in Series Sensuality and Love and Laughter. She is also the winner of the Florida Writers Beacon Award, the Golden Quill Award, the Georgia Romance Writers' MAGGIE Award and Booksellers' Best Award. Her books have been recognized by the Award of Excellence Contest, the Romance Writers of America Rita Contest, and the National Readers' Choice Awards. Other titles include: Footloose, Underfoot, Some Girls Do, and When She’s Bad. Leanne resides in Virginia with her husband and two children. When Lori Granger’s esteemed father died, she inherited a fortune. Known for going through her money like normal people do water, Lori has stretched her funds too tight on her many charitable donations. Now, not even her alluring and illustrious image can save her. Hired by her father’s estate, Jackson James is determined to control her spending. Worse, he appears immune to her many charms. He refuses to loosen his grip on her trust fund and helps her to fulfill a condition of her father’s will- to find a husband! As the attraction between them intensifies, and Jackson finds that Lori is much more than a rich girl with a credit card, could Mr. Straight-as-an-Arrow and Miss Break-All-the-Rules be just what the other needs to find true love…And right in front of their bickering, lusting eyes? The only issue I had with the book was two phrases that the author used, “inundulated” and “French kiss”. It may be just me who feels this way, and the author only used them a couple of times each, but they drew me out of the story when they were used. They just didn’t seem to fit there. This was a great story to get you out of your hum-drum life. The characters were charming and relatable. The setting drew you in. The plot flowed agreeably and smooth. There weren’t any dead spots where I lost interest. You know that you’ve been sucked into a great book to escape when you find yourself laughing out loud uproariously- which I did, several times, in fact. I especially loved the side story with Geoffrey and Maria. I wanted to read their outcome as much as Jackson and Lori’s. Trouble in High Heels, by Leanne Banks, is a hilarious and zesty story, filled with heart and vigor.
When I picked up Trouble in High Heels, I had no idea what I was in for! Luckily, I found it pleasantly charming, though I was a bit surprised (see previous 'disclaimers' about how I do not really like chick lit/contemps) at first. But soon I was chuckling and smirking as I read the witty banter and story between Lori and Jackson.
Much like Jackson soon finds out after meeting Lori, she's not like your stereotypical 'blonde' heiress, spending daddy's money left and right on silly and frivolous things. No, Lori was much different. She had a backbone, she wasn't an airhead like he originally feared, and she hides a secret from her past that she's afraid will make her look weak if it ever came out...
Jackson, on the other hand, was a surprise as well. His past was anything but perfect, and he worked hard to get where he is today. And although being a CPA isn't usually the job I want my dream man to have (I'd much rather have one in some type of secret military service or hunting demons for a living, but hey, that's just me!), if the guy was built like Jackson, along with his personality, I could easily change my mind. (Damn, who would have known that a life of crunching numbers would lead to shoulders like that?! )
And though she played a minor part in this story, appearing only through letters written to Lori, Sunny Collins (Lori's now deceased mother) offers some wicked, humorous, and very true advice, sure to entertain the reader just as much as the rest of the story!
Trouble in High Heels is a quick, fast-paced read, sure to brighten any reader's day. With just the right amount of witty humor, smart comments, romance, and even a few fairly steamy scenes, you'll find it hard to put the book down or get bored!
Here was one of the quotes from the book that I liked:
Dogs are generally more devoted than men are. ~The wicked and wise Sunny Collins
4/5 STARS! Warm, charming, and brisk, Trouble in High Heels is a great weekend read, perfect for the beach or any other place you choose. Sit down, put your feet up, and enjoy this enganging contemporary!
Lori Granger is heiress to her late father’s multi-millions in riches. She spends the money on everything but the one thing she is most generous about spending her money on is charity events. Lori can’t help but donate lots and lots of money away. Maybe that is why before Lori’s father passed away, he set a stipulation on how much money Lori can spend.
Lori is visited by Jackson James. He is the CPA that her father’s estate hired to control Lori’s spending habits. Lori is outraged when she learns that Jackson is a babysitter of sorts for her. She can’t go anywhere without seeing him over her shoulder, counting every penny she spends. Jackson informs her that the only way she can get rid of him is if she finds herself a husband. Jackson agrees to help Lori find Mr. Right. All Lori sees is Mr. Wrong but will she realize that Mr. Right has been standing right in front of her face the whole time?
Trouble in High Heels by Leanne Banks is a nice light read. It is one of those books that if you want to get away from your busy life for a little while, you can and maybe have some fun at the same time. I thought Lori and Jackson made a perfect match for each other. Lori was friendly, out-going and lots of fun; whereas Jackson was the by the books kind of guy who needed to loosen up. Leanne Banks will give you more for your buck!
Heiress Lori Granger looks like million bucks, doing her part as a Philanthropist and donating her money mostly to charity events but her checkbooks are in dire straits; in order to be able to use her inheritance, she would need to either cut her spending habit or get married till she's 30 to get full control of the inheritance.
Jackson James, a CPA working for a firm that has served Lori's father as a long-term customer finds himself in a position to handle Lori Granger finance account which is a dread where her spending is close to zero where she has to cut her spending habits. This is where things took on a funny term where Lori Granger comes up with a proposition of getting married and Jackson has to be a matchmaker to find her a faux husband in order to be able to use the inheritance.
As readers, it's a very light-hearted story which kept me smiling and grinning from the banters between Jackson and Lori. I enjoyed the reading process and the simple development which is predictable. Despite the predictability of the story, it's the type of genre that never gets old. This is the first book that I've chanced upon from Leanne Banks and it'll definitely not be the last one.
I didn't realise until I'd finished this book and added it to my list on Goodreads that it was No. 3 in a trilogy. Proof, perhaps, that it can stand on its own merits.
Warm fluffy chick-lit that rose like a soufflé then sagged at the end. A handsome alpha-male accountant is sent in to try and restrain a pretty but vapid heiress from giving away more money than her inheritance allows.
No action, suspense or mystery, just a series of encounters and dialogues that afford glimpses into the characters of the protagonists and reveal hidden strengths, not to mention a growing attraction.
Something a little more original and upbeat than the cliched love-you-forever ending would have been welcome, but the book still provides a delightful and entertaining read.
A fun twist to the beautiful heiress has to find a husband to fullfill a will story. Leanne Banks comes through again with a funny, "can't put it down" romance. Each book is stand alone capable, but never loses a bit of fun between book one in the series and book 3.
I liked this book a lot. It was not a favorite of the series, but was still pretty good, anyway. I liked how the hero got jealous, of other guys. I could not understand how she was afraid to tell her sisters what had happened to her.
This is an okay book. The story is predictable, but the characters are cute. Nothing magnificent here but a simple, easy to read story and if you like romance, a good one.
