Dollycas’s Thoughts

Olivia Denis may not be much of a newspaper reporter but she is one heck of a sleuth. She meets Mimi Mareau, a noted French Fashion Designer while interviewing a bride to be for the society pages. The designer is opening a salon in London so her elite clientele will not need to travel to Paris. She invites Olivia to stop by and write a feature for the newspaper. While there she discovers a dead body. The designer and her assistants all claim they have no clue who the man is or how he died, but Olivia knows they are lying. Dangerous events are taking place and they all seem to be connected to Mimi Mareau and her staff. With her employer’s approval Oliva find herself again in the middle of an investigation and putting her life at risk.

Kate Parker continues to top herself. She has created a wonderfully strong protagonist in Olivia Denis. She doesn’t shy away from these special assignments, in fact, she is excited by them. She always jumps in with both feet and follows the clues wherever they lead, no matter how hazardous her actions may be to her own health. She is surrounded by a great supporting cast that helps her in her endeavors, most of it behind the scenes.

With a war on the horizon many Jewish people are trying to flee Germany and as in the previous two books in this series, this is the backdrop for this story as well. Ms. Parker gives readers an excellent sense of time and place. Seen through the eyes of our main character we get a clear picture of where she travels and who she meets. The woman has a keen way of investigating.

The story has a very brisk pace and I was rapidly drawn into it. I read the entire book in one evening. As it was getting late, I kept reading, just one more chapter and then another, but the book was impossible for me to put down. I had to see how it ended before I could lie my head on my pillow.

I am a huge fan of this author. I loved her Victorian Bookshop Mysteries and now this Deadly Series. I highly recommend them all.

I find myself in-tune with the writings of Kate Parker, having read the same mysteries and growing up with the same passions about history. I enjoy reading historical fiction and immediately jumped on the opportunity to be able to read Deadly Fashion, which is the third book in her Deadly Series. Right into the fray of pre-WWII and smack dab in London we follow Olivia, a widow with a heroic double-life, as she works to uncover who murdered the British Agent, "Elias".

Kate Parker's finesse in detailing 1930's fashion is impeccable and brings you further into the times. What I also found on-point were the feelings she was able to evoke when delving into sympathizers and, on the other side of the coin, those that were oppressed and hunted. The twists and turns that Olivia went through to find who the murderer was, in the end, gave me one question to ask, "What would you do if faced with the chance of being sent back through the same nightmare you escaped from?".

She drew me in from beginning to end having not read the first two even.  Written in such a way that Deadly Fashion can also hold up its own as a standalone; the right amount of history was written about the characters so nothing was missed and the story-line smoothly transitioned into a fantastic cozy mystery.  Now? Grabbing myself the first two and going to be checking out her Victorian Bookshop Mysteries.

In this book, #3 of the series, Hitler is threatening Czechoslovakia; Livvy is interviewing her idol, French designer Mimi Mareau; and Adam is still away with the army. When Livvy accompanies Mimi to her new shop, they find the body of a man in the basement. Convinced me that one of Mimi’s assistants, Reina, recognized the dead man, Livvy haunts the shop, hoping to learn more.

Then Livvy learns the dead man was a German-Jewish communist, and suddenly, there is the possibility that he was murdered by the Nazis. And with Hilter poised to conquer Czechoslovakia, Livvy is sent to Prague to smuggle out a priceless work of religious art which will allow dozens of Czech Jews to escape to England. Along the way, Livvy discovers the identity of the murderer.

I mostly enjoyed this book. I did feel, however, that Parker falls into the trap of what I call lazy plotting - having her characters miss obvious clues in order not to give away the culprit too soon. The main character also immediately accepted a piece of hearsay as fact and began repeating it to all and sundry - a sure tipoff of a red herring. I figured it out anyway, and the fact that the characters seemed oblivious was annoying. Also, the demands placed on the main character seem to grow more and more outlandish and preposterous with each book. What’s next, a command from King George himself?

Finally, poor word choice. Here’s one example: “I rode to the top floor in the elevator and CLIMBED OUT to walk toward...” Who has ever “climbed out” of an elevator? Unless, of course, it has stopped between floors (not the case here).

I really liked the first book of this series, the second book was ok but this one reads like an also run. Too many coincidences. Too much acceptance without any push back from criminals and law enforcement. Too easy and too blah. I hope this was the last in this brief series as Kate Parker and her heroine Olivia seem to have run out of steam.

I liked the first 2 books in this series, but I think the author is getting a little stale. There was a lot of talk without much happening, then one of the mysteries was solved at the end with no clues before hand.

Deadly Fashion was a pleasant mystery. I think, however, the first book Deadly Scandal remains the best.

The setting for this story, and the series so far, is in the late 1930’s England, and tensions are high and war with Germany seems increasingly inevitable. Although this is the third novel in this series, the reader will have no issues following the latest story involving young widow, Olivia (Livvy) Denis. She has officially taken on the job of a society reporter for a large newspaper, but she is actually employed to secretly assist her boss’ Jewish relatives as they try to flee the reach of the Nazi regimes in Europe. This time Livvy also finds herself helping the government track down a Nazi assassin on the side.

This story has many things to engage the reader including weaving many actual historical events in a very skillful way whilst narrating a story that involves a Jewish communist spying for England, a high society fashion designer and her staff from Paris and her lover, who is an English Duke with pro-German sympathies.
It is 1938 and Nazi influence and aggression is growing ever stronger. Chamberlain goes to Munich to talk about the Sudetenland. Olivia's father works for the Foreign Office and you hear that her late husband also did until he was murdered the year before. Livvy takes on an assignment to learn more about the famous Parisian couturier, Mimi Mareau but a body is discovered in the basement and that body is a British agent, known as Elias. Elias had a lot of secrets of his own, and Olivia is given the task of discovering exactly who he was, why he was killed and whether the culprit is a foreign adversary or someone closer to home. As Olivia works to uncover his killer, she learns more about the secret work he was doing to aid Jewish people trying to get out of occupied Europe, she also gets involved in trying to find out who was behind a plot to assassinate Churchill with exploding cigars.
There are many details of life in London in the days leading up to World War II. The British people in London regard Chamberlain's efforts in Munich as "giving us more time" before the inevitable war comes and it is obvious that the Nazis have quite a bit of sympathy in aristocratic British drawing rooms.

The main character of Livvy is smart and likable and other recurring characters are nicely described. This is a mystery is a well-constructed story that has offers clues but keeps you guessing until the end whilst weaving fact and fiction in an enjoyable way.

If you are a fan of Jacqueline Winspear, Suan Elia MacNeal or Rhys Bowen, you are going to love Kate Parker's Deadly series.

This is the third novel in this series, but even if you haven't read the first two books, you'll have no problem diving into this one. The setting is pre-WWII England, and tensions are high.

Olivia Denis is a reporter who finds herself helping the government on the side. She's a smart character that is also likable. On one assignment to learn more about designer Mimi Mareau she discovers a body in the basement, that gets her tangled up in a new mystery, especially when that body is one of a British agent, known as Elias. Elias had a lot of secrets of his own.

This story has everything from the high fashion designer and her staff to her lover, who is a Duke, who has German sympathies.

As Olivia works to uncover his killer, she learns more about the work he was doing to aid Jewish people trying to get out of occupied territories, she also gets involved in trying to find out who was behind a plot to assassinate Churchill

Kate Parker delivers a story that is rich in history. So much of the story makes you want to google certain events to find out if they happened. There's at least one event that does have some root in history. She weaves fact and fiction in a wonderful way.

The mystery is well crafted. Parker drops clues but never enough to give you an idea of the killers identity before the final reveal. It may also leave you wondering if one of the characters may appear in the book again.

It was nice that Olivia got a bit of a happy surprise from her love interest.

I look forward to visiting Olivia again as England enters the war.

Tweed, Espionage and Cloche Hats Pre WWII London

It's 1938 and budding secret agent/society reporter for the Daily Premier, Olivia Denis finds herself interviewing the glamorous French fashion designer, Mimi Mareau when a German communist is found bludgeoned in the basement of the haute couture house. Olivia’s boss, Sir Henry suspects a leak and assigns her the task of uncovering who on ‘the committee’—a collection of wealthy Jewish professionals, determined to save as many European Jews as possible—has turned coat and led a Nazi assassin to their door. Olivia having helped Sir Henry smuggle his own in-laws out of Germany is only too happy to lend her sleuthing skills to ferret out the murderer of such a noble man.

In addition to ‘the committee’, Olivia investigates a wide array of suspects at the Mayfair house of haute couture–Nazi sympathizers, the Duke of Marshburn and his mistress, Mimi Mareau; Fleur, the standoffish chief cutter who recognizes the dead man; and Reina, the mousy head seamstress and possible ex-wife of the victim.

As a style obsessed, WWII history addict, this book was the high fashion point of my day. And although it was the third book in Kate Parker’s Deadly Series, it completely held up as a standalone. I will now be delving into this series beginning with the first book.

The vivid vintage detail, the gritty backdrop and the intense atmosphere of a looming war transported me back to another era. Five Fashionable Thumbs Up!

I had a day with nothing on the calendar (!) and powered through this intriguing mystery. Olivia Denis works for the society page of a London newspaper and, on the side, does clandestine investigations for the paper's publisher. It is 1938 and the Nazis are circling. Chamberlin has gone to Munich to talk about the Sudetenland. Olivia's father works for the Foreign Office, as did her husband until he was murdered by political assassins the year before. But when a body is discovered in the basement of a Parisian couturier, Olivia must discover who he is, why he was killed and whether the culprit is a foreign operative or a personal enemy. The book is filled with details of life in London in the days leading up to World War II. Someone tries to kill Churchill with exploding cigars, for instance. The people of London regard Chamberlain's efforts in Munich as "giving us more time" before the inevitable war comes. And Nazis have quite a bit of sympathy in aristocratic British drawing rooms.

Once again Livvy is drawn into the war before it even starts, helping Esther and her father bring valuable Jewish treasures to England before Hitler invades Czechoslovakia.
This is all happening at the same time as Livvy is trying to find an assassin/murderer before another attempt is made on Winston Churchill's life. But is the assassin/murderer one person or two, you are left guessing until the end.
Her love life, however, takes an interesting turn with the return of Adam Redmond. Will he propose or won't he; you have to wait until near the very end of the book to find out.
Kate Parker again has you guessing who done it until the very end. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.

The accidental detective

When her husband is found dead, the police as well as a number of his friends, buy the story that his death was a suicide. But she doesn’t, leaving her with a difficult task—find her husband’s killer and bring him to justice. Her success brings her to the attention of other people needing answers and the completion of other dangerous tasks.
In this novel (the third), she is using her overt job—writing articles on fashion— to assist the police and military police in uncovering a Nazi assassin, as well as supporting some of the last groups of Jews fleeing Checklosvakia.
This is a fine book—grab it and settle down for an enjoyable afternoon or evening.

3.5 stars.
Set in Sept 1938 as war looms ever closer in Europe, our heroine, Olivia Denis, society/fashion reporter for a major London newspaper, is trying to contain her excitement over the arrival of Mimi Mareau, famous French fashion designer. Mareau is in London to open a branch of her Paris salon; how can this possibly tie-in to murder? Well, trust our Livvy to stumble upon a dead man in Mme Mareau's basement, that's how.
And we're off and running with another clever mystery which mixes political refuge problems and a suspected French assassin together with high fashion.
Enjoyable way to spend a few hours.

Great book!!

I give all of these books in the Deadly series five stars because to me they were all wonderful. The characters are so believable & truly well described. This book is right up there with my extra favorite books! I always when I start a series read them in order. It makes them so much better when you can develop the characters from the start. I was very surprised when the murderer was revealed, I wasn't expecting that person at all. I believe everyone will enjoy these books & recommend then highly. Looking forward to the next book to come out!!

Not quite as good as the first two books in the series. For a large portion of the book there is a lot of talk and little action. Also, a lot of repetition which made the story drag in spots. The mystery is a little easier to solve than in the first two books, too. The culprit is obvious (at least to me) once Olivia closely questions Reina about Elias/Josef's wife.

I also guessed Brigitte's connection to Mimi immediately. I'm surprised it took Olivia longer to figure it out. At least I agreed with the ending. Leah needs psychiatric help not a hangman's noose.

It's not easy being Olivia...

This is the third book in the Deadly series that I have read and I must say, this one was the best thus far. Livvy finds herself in yet another tangled mess with a famous designer, Nazis, and a spies! I love the development of the characters in this series as well as how Ms. Parker always surprises me in the end. I highly recommend this series to those interested in WW2.

This time around Hitler is threatening Sudentland so very close to war. A French designer a la Coco Chanel is coming to London and palling about with a Nazi duke. A man is found dead in the basement of the salon by our heroine and he turns about to be a resistance fighter wanted by the Nazis. Sir Henry thinks he has been betrayed by a friend of his and asks her to investigate. Things only get more complicated from there. Love this series

Two thumbs up

I'm so happy to discovered this writer, she makes reading enjoyable. In this book Ms Parker takes you England of 1938 and the talk of war and all the fear it brings to all the people. You have attempted assassination, murders and high risks for Olivia. You meet new characters and renew acquaintances with characters from the previous books. All in all a jolly good book. You won't be disappointed.

Okay, so I couldn't get the second one so I jumped to the third. Another fun story, but I guess I associated the bottles and powders with explosives and the French assassin with the French modiste more quickly than someone in real life would have because it's a mystery book? Or maybe I'm just messed up because I had to read them out of order? I just downloaded the fourth, so no more time reviewing!

I can't get enough of this series

The characters care the mysteries care good but the descent into war and the rise of the Nazis are what makes these books special. I also enjoy the clothing details, because I like clothes. It is also fascinating to realize how much the world has changed and sad to realize how much is the same. If only we could learn from history so we wouldn't have to keep repeating it.

Fashion to die for

Olivia is delighted when she meets fashion designer Mimi, whom she has idolized from afar. Mimi is opening a London branch of her Paris salon, and Olivia gets to take pictures and interview the famous designer. The relationship starts going sour when a man is found dead in the basement, and Olivia is ordered by her boss to investigate. It's even worse when the body count increases. When will she get to see Adam again, and who is the German assassin?

Intense and Complicated

As riveting as the other books in this Deadly Series by Kate Parker. I haven't been in a World War, yet, but the uncertainty, fear, sorrow, lose and terror, played my emotions. This is an intense "Cozy Mystery" that fans of the time period will thoroughly enjoy.

Olivia Denis is at it again in the third book of this series. This time she is trying to solve the murder of a man in the basement of a London fashion house. At the same time she is helping her friends rescue more Jewish families from Prague. As the two activities coalesce, she plays a key role. Enjoyed it!

Really enjoyed the characters in this one. However, I couldn't give a hoot about Olivia and Adam's relationship. Guess I'm only interested in the slow burn, not like, reading about relationships. Also am not feeling great about the increasing amount of plot based around the upcoming Holocaust. It's a bit too heavy for the murder mysteries I signed up for.

Another excellent entry in Parker's Deadly series. An interview with a couturier Olivia has long admired turns into involvement with spies, assassins, and Jewish refugees. Parker makes London in the years just before World War II come alive.

Really like Kate Parker. More modern (WWII) than my royalty ones, but a well written cozy mystery. I never figure them out. Shows the conflicts among countries in Europe and how saving the Jews was not clear.
