Former FBI agent Brooke Fairfax is on the verge of starting a new, simpler life with Irish mogul Declan O’Roark. But when tragedy strikes the night of Brooke’s and Declan’s engagement party, Brooke has no choice but to track down Romeo, the serial killer stalking her for years. And Declan vows to help her put an end to the man who desires Brooke so completely, he’s willing to kill to possess her.
When a woman from Declan’s past emerges, promising nothing but grief for the already struggling couple, Declan is faced with a dilemma: take the time to get the troubled woman from his past the help she desperately needs or join the woman he loves in the struggle to stop Romeo before he makes Brooke his next victim. The problem? Declan’s love for Brooke might not be enough to stop Romeo from killing them all.
Heather Sunseri was raised on a tiny farm in the smallest of towns in thoroughbred horse country near Lexington, Kentucky. After high school, she attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, and later graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in accounting. Always torn between a passion for fantasy and a mind for the rational, it only made sense to combine her career in accounting with a novel-writing dream.
Heather now lives in a different small town on the other side of Lexington with her two children, and her husband, Mike, the biggest Oregon Duck fan in the universe. When she’s not writing or working as a CPA, she spends her time tormenting her daughter’s cat, Olivia, and loving on her son’s Golden Retriever, Jenny. MINDSPEAK is her first published novel.
Desired in Darkness by Heather Sunseri is the fifth book in the In Darkness series. Brooke Fairfax is engaged to Declan O’Roark, and she is looking forward to a wonderful future with him. The only thing standing in the way of their happily-ever-after is Romeo aka Woodford Clay Harrison. Romeo is proving to be elusive. Brooke’s parents are throwing the couple an engagement party at their home in Virginia. Romeo strikes during the party leaving a dead body and ruined wedding dresses behind. Brooke is determined to catch him while Romeo is set on having Brooke for himself. Declan’s attentions get diverted when his brother arrives along with a woman from Declan’s past who will cause nothing but more grief for the engaged couple. If he diverts his attention to take care of this problem, Declan will not be there to protect Brooke. What will it take to catch Romeo?
Desired in Darkness is a fast-paced novel that will have you riveted to the edge of your seat. Readers finally gets answers to the questions we have had since the first book in the series. The revelations will amaze you. It was nice to get to know more about Declan and his past in this installment as well as a little more about Brooke’s relationship with her mother. Desired in Darkness is not a standalone. The books in the In Darkness series need to be read in order. The characters are well-developed, and they continue to evolve in each book. They are very real in this gritty story. I do wish the intimate scenes were not so descriptive and that there were fewer of them (just my personal feelings on the matter). At the end of the book I was left wondering what is going to happen next. I would love to say more, but I do not want to spoil it for you.
Author Heather Sunseri went out with a bang with her final novel in the In Darkness series. Desired in Darkness is an intense read that will keep the pages turning until the very end. Sunseri takes her readers on a suspenseful journey with her many twists and turns.
Romeo is even more dangerous and creepier than ever. We finally have our questions answered since the very first book. Who is responsible for the murder of her husband and what really happened the night that he was killed. We also find out why exactly Romeo has targeted Brooke.
This is a super quick read that can be read in sitting. I couldn’t put the book down. The way the book ended was not exactly how I pictured how the series would end. In fact, it’s almost left open for another coming. Maybe we’ll get a spin-off because I feel like there are still some questions that need answering. Who knows. Either way, you know it’s a great suspense series when the author keeps you needing more.
However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind with this book. There are some cursing and drinking. We also see drugs, but it’s never seen as okay. We do see characters having sex, but they are super quick and don’t go into detail. These can easily be skipped over.
Overall, highly recommended!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
This was a page turner that kept you guessing on what was going to happen next. Plenty of shocking moments and reveals throughout.
Romeo.. A man who has been hiding in the shadows for years at first helping former FBI Agent Brooke Fairfax with anonymous tips to help solve cases.. Then the possessive behavior started.. And finally the bodies started piling up. This man eludes everyone and is always one step ahead. But now they know his name and are slowly finding out the whys of his game, but not before he ups the stakes and finally reveals his end game.
We finally get answers to questions we've had since the first book.. Who was really involved in Brooke's husband murder and who has had knowledge of it all this time. Romeo's past is revealed and his connection to Brooke.
Romeo's reign of terror is far reaching throughout this book and Brooke's sanity is tested. But through it all her fiance Declan O'Roark is by her side trying to keep her out of the madman's clutches but that isn't easy when all Brook wants to do it to dive into them to finally put an end to her stalker.
I am conflicted on my feelings about the ending but I've loved this series and the characters from the first book and can't wait to see what comes next...
I devoured this series and i still want more. You just can't stop turning the pages with this one. I loved the suspense and the investigations' details, the author really knew what she was was doing, and it had just enough romance to keep me hooked. I really wish there will be a sixth book
Let me start off by saying this series is an absolutely all time favorite of mine. I LOVE the characters, I adore the secondary cast of characters too.
But that being said...I do not feel sympathy at all for the villain, not one iota...zip, nada, nothing.
From the start this book was high octane, keeping me guessing on the ride. Brooke & Declan are characters you get invested in. Dimitri...well let me say I can’t wait for his story. And Ty and his partner James make you smile and I admire the friendships that they have. Plus all the rest of the characters that were not as prevalent in this book...Marti and her mom who own the inn.
But I have to be true to myself and say I struggled with this book. And I too write, so I deeply respect what she did. But for me...Romeo needed an ending that was permanent at this point.
I will add that...that is the beauty of reviews. Everyone interprets a book differently. And while I don’t ‘get’ the why of the author, I respect that this is her ‘baby’.
I am truly looking forward to what comes next. This author has a dynamic, unique and frankly an extremely talented voice in this genre, and not loving this will not deter me from being a total ‘fangirl’ for future books.
If you've been reading this series, this is the book you've been waiting for: Romeo. You will discover Romeo's past that leads up to the adventures with Brooke. But as usual there are some other surprises added into the mix so there is never a dull moment. *I have received an advanced copy from the author. My opinions expressed are my own and not influenced in any way. *
Kudos to the author by book Number 5 the author has managed to make sure the characters of Agent Fairfax and Declan are still appealing that I read this book in one setting. This is not to say the first four books were bad they were good but this book is better. The author has managed to keep the characters relevant and just as determined if not more so to solve the case. Sometimes when you reach a book level past the first three books the story becomes repetitive and boring but not in this case the story.
Keeping track of the characters from book 1 namely Brooke, Declan, and Dimitri, Mari, Carlos, Michael and the director of the FBI Brooke's father the author has managed to keep these characters in the loop with active parts not just fitting them in were they just might work they actually play significant parts in the story line.
I can't wait for the next installment in this series if there is one I just feel like their story still not over.
That 3 letters kind-of word is actually perfectly capture my expression about this book. The fifth instalment of In Darkness series by Heather Sunseri. Definitely not a standalone. You have to read it in order, but you won’t be disappointed. They are definitely worth your while. The series was one of my favourite ever.
So, this book was kind-of a conclusion of an arc story that had been going on since the first book. Yes, the one and only Romeo, Brooke’s informant turned stalker. We even got his point of view here! And I’ve got to admit that his POV was creeping me out. As Brooke and Declan nuptial in the horizon, Romeo escalated to hurting people to stop this from happening.
A lot of questions had their answers here. I got to understand so much better about the characters, and felt more connection to them. I loved Brooke and Declan strong relationship, and I fully understand the obstacles in their pathway. I loved their characters that so human. They’re so flawed that I really felt like they’re me and my friends. Yet they’re also extraordinary that I adored them as heroine and hero. The side characters, especially Ty and Dimitri, also very likable. Their characters were full, had vital roles, and not an after-thought-addition to the story.
The arc story might looks like it end here, yet I believe there will be more of In Darkness series, what with that ending. Spin-off? Or continuation is more likely? Whatever it will be, I definitely will read it.
I was provided a complementary copy by the author / publisher, but this in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions.
So we finally got some more info on the elusive Romeo..Declan and Brooke are trying to move forward with their wedding and lives. When everything come to an head, who will reign victorious.
Brooke is strong, single minded and very determined to pick up the pieces to her broken life and move forward with Declan..but how can she when her own personal stalker is constantly inserting himself into her life. Why has he targeted her? What is his end game? Declan wants Brooke in his life, regardless of what baggage she brings. Unfortunately, Declan has a little bit of baggage himself that they'll have to deal with.
I enjoyed the book, even loved it, but there are some things still hanging out there that I wished were addressed..the ending with Romeo was a little lackluster..he gave up to easily and there was no gun play..I have to assume that he just plain crazy because the reasoning for his all of behavior since college was a bit blah..I didn't understand the need for Declan's brother or Claire..it served no purpose. I'm enjoying the series..not sure if this is the last one, but if it is, that's fine. If not, I'm curious how we'll move forward.
I hated every interruption that forced me to set this book aside and return to my normal daily activities. This world sucked me in and held me captive. I’ve watched Brooke’s abilities grow with each case she’s investigated. I’ve seen Declan open up more and more about his mysterious past with every detour that’s been thrown in their path. I’ve witnessed this pair fall deeper in love with each secret they’ve revealed to one another. And I have experienced with them each and every trap, misdirection, and ambush Romeo has laid out. Every time I thought I was about to out-think the plot in this story, I was shown just how very wrong I was. Nothing in this book was quite how I expected it to go, and that made it the most exquisite torture to read. More than once I had to stop myself from skipping forward, only to backtrack and reread something I hadn’t paid proper attention to the first time. I am beyond grateful to know that there is at least one more book in this series yet to come. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.
I love Heather Suneri, and I love love love this series! The characters draw you in and you can't help but keep reading. This is the 5th book in the series, and there are times you think this could be the final book. And the series probably could end here, but I WANT MORE!
I want more Brooke and Declan! I want to know what happened/happens to Romeo! Heather released the ALMOST ending to her newsletter subscribers, and while I know its not really how the book ended, it makes me want to know what happened even more!
All of the Darkness books are easy to read, and I highly suggest starting with Book 1 before jumping in to Book 5, but you won't regret it!

Every now and then you stumble across an author you are not familiar with and take a chance by reading one book. After I read book 1 in this series, I was impressed with the story line, so I bought all other books in this series and pre-ordered this last one. My kindle version was downloaded automatically and I could not stop reading until the last page. This was a terrific conclusion to what has happened in the previous 4 books. I was happy how the pieces came together and reached their conclusion. The books in this series are not stand alone books, you will need to read them in order to get the full impact of the over reaching arc of the story line. At the end of my kindle version of the book there was a link to the author's website with more information about the writing process and I recommend you click on the link. I look forward to maybe book 6 ? 4 stars
Heather swings the In Darkness bat... AND THE CROWD GOES WILD! Another home run for Heather Sunseri!
This book continues off of the last in the in Darkness series with Brooke- former FBI analyst but now the head of Kentucky’s Homeland Security- and Declan- charming, sexy as hell, Irish billionaire- as they navigate Brooke’s anonymous helper turned stalker/murderer- Romeo. But, Romeo has a name now. Woody. And he’s taken one too many shots at Brooke for her to not fight back.
After Declan being shot, workers going missing, and people getting put in the hospital, plus the unfortunate murder of a close friend and FBI agent, Brooke gets involved in the Romeo case once again, but this time, she promises to let Declan help so their engagement and love for each other doesn’t stand in jeopardy.
Will Woody always be one step ahead of Brooke and her team? Will Brooke and Declan’s Love survive the murder and grief and secrets coming to the surface?
Read the next book in the In Darkness Series to find out!
This book continues to deliver punch after punch! I just need to find the happy ending and end the mystery... but that’s the thing with amazing authors; they will always keep you needing more!
I really loved this book. I believe of the 5 it is my favorite. Brooke is finally allowing herself to move on with Declan. In the past I almost felt like she didn’t deserve him. I needed to see her trust him instead of running away and hiding things from him. I also needed suspense and action and I was not disappointed. Romeo met and exceeded my expectations, but I wanted what he whispered in her ear to be revealed. Dimitri is still my favorite and I want to see more and more of him. I feel like book 5 brought the end of the main arc but I don’t believe this series is finished. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
A must read novel in the series. We finally get more answers about Romeo, which I have been waiting for. The author also ties in additional drugs/crime world details that are both relevant to the storyline as well as to our current society. Honestly, this was not my favorite of the series, I think there were parts of the story that were glossed over and I had questions about things that didn’t happen. In spite of that I still think it is a very good book and definitely should not be skipped over. I really enjoy the story and interactions between Brooke, Declan, Dimitri and Ty. I am looking forward to more about these characters from a very talented writer. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
The next chapter with Declan and Brooke and, as their engagement settles, Romeo rears his ugly head. I devoured this book, as always, but I did find the last part with the big Romeo climax, a bit too soapy for what I wanted. That being said, I get so swept into this world and sucked up into the mystery and love. I still adore Ty, and hope he gets more time in future novels, and the setup for the next book is very intriguing. I also liked that we got more backstory about Brooke's family and that crumbs that were dropped way back in book 1 are now coming to fruition.
***I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reading Copy of this book from the author.***
Wow, this is book 5 In The Darkness Series and this series just gets better and more intense. Full of action, danger and suspense. Well written with captivating characters and a page turning story line. This story begins with Declan and Brooke (former FBI agent) on the verge of getting married. We have been following their relationship in previous books. Romeo who was a former helper to Brooke reappears in this book as a stalker and murderer. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. So well written and a pleasure to read. No spoiler but this is a book that you will want to read. I read an reader copy and voluntarily chose to write a review.
Wow, Book 5 in the series did not disappoint. We know the identity of Romeo but not his motivation. Brooke is still his obsession but his actions are escalating and people are getting hurt. As Brooke and Declan get closer to the aisle, Romeo will do anything to stop that from happening. Brooke along with Declan, Ty, and Dimitri slowly start to edge closer to finding him, but can they stop him in time? This story is full of intrigue and revelations and twists and turns from beginning to end.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and these characters since Book 1. I hope maybe someday they will visit us again in another story. :)
3.5 stars. Desired in Darkness is the fiftg book in the In Darkness series. If you have read the previous books it helps you understand the setting and the main characters. But this book can be read as a standalone. There isn't a cliffhanger at the end. There is violence and sex so 18+.
The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here. The main characters in the series are Brooke Fairfax and Declan O'Rourke. You easily get caught up in the emotions of the characters and story. There is plenty of action as well as twists and turns in the book. I really enjoyed this book and storyline. I look forward to reading more of Heather Sunseri's books.
I voluntarily reviewed this book. The latest entry in the series does not disappoint. Brooke and Declan are finally getting their happy ending, or are they. Brooke has finally left her quest to stop Romeo to an old friend so she can finally let her past go and start to look for the future, however both Brooke and Declan have things in their past that will not stay in the past. Will a secret from Declan's past hurt their future? Will Romeo finally get his Brooke or will Declan and Brooke bring him the justice he deserves? The fifth installment will leave you breathless until the final end, or is it?
Oh WOW! This book is FANTASTIC! It will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. Brooke is certainly in trouble when Romeo escalates to murder and then kidnapping. I love that Heather dedicated certain chapters to either Brooke, Declan or Romeo and makes it seem like they are actually talking to the reader. She gets the reader involved. I am so happy that Brooke and Declan got their happily ever after. FANTASTIC job Heather! I received this book as an advanced review copy! I would highly recommend this book.
This book is absolutely full of suspense! Heather has done another amazing job of capturing your interest page after page. I loved the open honest relationship she has developed between Brooke and DeClan. The insightful look into Romeo's mind was intense. And as usual the revelations and twists to the storyline keep you on the edge of your seat. I am chomping at the bit to read the next book in this series. Heather your writing is absolutely perfect as usual! Your books are brilliant. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
I have been following this series from the start, but I did miss a book and a half of the series. Although I was unable to read the book before this, I was still able to follow the story.
As I’ve mentioned on my review for the first book, reading this series is like watching The Blacklist. You’ll get irritated with the stupid mistakes of the agents, you’ll be on edge finding out what would happen next, but at the same time, you’ll also be able to predict some of the scenes.
Desired in Darkness is another enthralling installment in the epic In Darkness series! I could not put it down. I literally did not stop reading from the moment I started until I reached the end. The insights into Romeo’s mind give just a hint as to how deep his obsession with Brooke goes. I love a story that keeps me guessing instead of knowing what will happen next. Sunseri is a complex and intriguing writer who knows how to keep readers interested and invested in her characters. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher.
I really enjoyed this read. Thinking back over the others in the series, this might've been my favorite so far. I really liked that we really got to get inside everyone's heads with different points of view. Switching the points of view also provided more suspense than one character simply continuing their story. Though when you think back over everything that has happened to these characters it seems very far fetched, each story in its own is an exciting and realistic trip into the world of Brooke Fairfax. I'm glad this series is continuing. It's always one I like to read.
If books were chocolate, “Desired in Darkness” would be a Valrhona or a Teuscher because it is simply the BEST and very satisfying. If books were roller coasters, “Desired In Darkness” would be the Japanese Takabisha because the story of Brooke, Declan, and Romeo not only messes with your mind, but it is unpredictable with simultaneous fear and joy. I couldn’t put it down! I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book. The comments and opinions expressed are explicitly mine.
This is the fifth book in the In Darkness series and picks up right where book four left off. As always there is plenty of suspense and action to keep you turning the pages wanting to know what is going to happen next. If you have read the other books in this series you will learn a little bit more about Romeo and if you are like me have more reasons to hate him. I will be patiently waiting for the next book to read in this series!! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Loved this series Brooke is a real hard headed type and Declan is amazing love interest, he is truly crazy about her in spite of some of her faults. She is still being stalked and finds out who the stalker is and what part he played in her life and in the death of her late husband. This is end of the series and you really need to read the whole thing, they are short books with suspense, intrigue and lovely romance with real issues. The characters act like grown ups which is so refreshing.
Heather Sunseri never fails to get me hooked. This book had me glued to my iPad forgetting anything else existed. Brooke is an amazing character, and I love the way Declan is with her. The danger they were facing made me completely lose track of time. This is a must read series. I received an ARC of this book.
Loved the book! Hoping the next one is just has great and shares more about the trail of the motorcycle gang the daughter that got away! And happens next withe CIA! Trying not to give any spoilers for those that have not read or finished the book, a must read! I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book that I received from the publisher!
