കേരളത്തിൽ പ്രചാരത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം സമ്പാദിച്ചു ചേർത്ത് എട്ടു ഭാഗങ്ങളിലായി 25 വർഷങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലായി(1909 മുതൽ 1934 വരെ) കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ ശങ്കുണ്ണി രചിച്ച ബൃഹദ്ഗ്രന്ഥമാണ് ഐതിഹ്യമാല. സാഹിത്യവിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്കും ചരിത്രവിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്കും ഗവേഷകർക്കും ഒന്നു പോലെ ഉപയോഗപ്രദമായ ഗ്രന്ഥമാണിത്. ഐതിഹ്യമാലയെക്കുറിച്ച് അതിന്റെ അവതാരികയിൽ മലയാളത്തിലെ കഥാസരിത്‌സാഗരം എന്നാണ് അമ്പലപ്പുഴ രാമവർമ്മ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചത്‌.

Aithihyamala or Ithihyamala (Malayalam: ഐതിഹ്യമാല) (Garland of Legends) is a collection of century-old stories from Kerala that cover a vast spectrum of life, famous persons and events. It is a collection of legends numbering over a hundred, about magicians and yakshis, feudal rulers and conceited poets, kalari experts, practitioners of ayurveda and courtiers; elephants and their mahouts, tantric experts.

About the author

Kottarathil Sankunni is a well-known author of Malayalam literature. He made huge contributions in both poetry and prose. He started compiling the legends of Kerala in 1909 and completed the work in eight volumes over a quarter of a century. "Aithihyamala" (Garland of Legends), is a collection of stories of legends prepared by Kottarathil Sankunni. The works on the legends were collected and published by Sankunni in the famous Malayalam literary magazine of the nineteenth century, the Bhashaposhini. Later, they were collected in eight parts and published by the Reddiar Press in Quilon, sometime in the early twentieth century. India's first writers' cooperative, the National Bookstall started publishing these articles as collections on behalf of the 'Kottarathil Sankunni Memorial Committee' in 1974 and later this was taken up by another publisher, D. C. Books, in 1991. Such is their popularity that, from 1991 till 2004 almost 150,000 copies of these stories were distributed.

This book strings together the myths and legends of Kerala - it is true to its name, "The Garland of Legends". This fertile strip of land, bordered on one side by the Western Ghats and on the other by the Arabian Sea, is called "God's Own Country" by the tourism authorities. While this is a catchy line to sell to Westerners, "The Country of Woodland Sprites and Goblins" would be more appropriate.

Kerala is rich in myth, folklore and legend - and Kottarathil Sankunni does the invaluable service here of collecting many of them together in a single volume. It is a fascinating collection and required reading for every Malayali: to understand the magical landscape of our beautiful state.

Ah ! Mythology ! Hallowed be thy name ! Thou shalt remain as the heart that beats indefatigably even after all the other stories are buried deep beneath the murky waves of time.

Ithihyamala captures some of the central myths from all over Kerala in this door stopper of a book. How is it amazing ? Let me count off on my fingers : There are vampires, witches, wizards, kings & scheming courtiers, vengeful gods & benevolent goddesses, thieves & murderers, noble pachyderms...and a list that goes on and on. The stories are extremely colorful and tell the tales of a time when people were more religiously oriented than they are these days.

Before electricity came into the villages & sleepy little towns, every twitch & movement beyond the circle of light cast by the flickering lamp was a demon out to get you. Before science befuddled the human mind with rationality, gods walked the earth with mortal men ! Sagas were told of seemingly supernatural events which the men & women of yesteryears brushed off as common occurences. Yes, it was a magical time & this book is full of tales from that slice of time !

The Aithihyamala is a collection of 126 tales that are an amalgamation of fact,history,myth and folklore from the state of Kerala.This collection was written by Kootharathtil Sankunni in the 1900s and the documentation took place over a period of 25 years.The collection has been translated into three volumes by Leela James and is published by #hachetteindia .I love Indian folktales,tradition and myths and so I thought I will check out the first volume in the beginning .I was unable to put the book down .There are stories of miracle doctors -aalathur nambi,saints who could see God ,kings who were real lions,loyal elephants ,astrologers,snakes ,gods and goddesses all combined in this volume.It was magical and these families still exist.I wanted to go to Kerala and actually see these places after reading this .If you love Indian folklore and history ,don't miss this.

This title is the best reference source for everything related to myths and legends from Kerala. Century-old tales about mythical places, events, temples and even legendary elephants are narrated by the author in great detail and will mesmerize the reader. The book is so charming that it invites the reader to re-read it again and again.

Aithihyamala meaning rhe “Garland of Legends” is a compilation of the stories from Kerala. It has the life accounts of many historical personalities, Gods and demons. These were compiled by Kottarathil Sankunni, a Sanskrit- Malayalam scholar by reading through many of the old Malayalam texts and from accounts of people who passed down these stories from generation to generation by word of mouth. While I am familiar with some of the stories like the Vararuchi, Kayamkulam Kochunni etc, many of the stories were totally new to me! This book transports you into the past, by providing an authentic portrayal of the characters and the land they lived in. While it’s quite easy to dismiss the stories as old wives tale, what this offers is unique insight into the lives of the distant past- the social structures, the lifestyle, food habits, the beliefs, rituals and customs. Many of these stories have supernatural elements that are common in Kerala folklore- the Yakshis, Chathans, Madans and the like. The stories are told in a really engrossing manner and are well translated without losing the essence of the original. These stories also stand testament to the power of human values such as righteousness, discipline, honesty coupled with quick thinking, imagination, and shrewdness. It also teaches the Power of Bhakti - with the devotion and surrendering to the almighty, one can tide through the vicissitudes of life.

ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായി ഐതിഹ്യമാലയെ കണ്ട ഓർമ്മ എനിക്ക് മൂന്നോ നാലോ വയസുള്ളപ്പോൾ എന്റെ അപ്പൂപ്പന്റെ പുസ്‌തക ശേഖരത്തിലാണ്. അന്ന് എനിക്ക് ആ പുസ്‌തകം വായിക്കാനോ ഒന്ന് കൈയിൽ എടുക്കാനോ കഴിയില്ലായിരുന്നു. എങ്കിലും അതിന്റെ പേരുകൊണ്ടും അത് ഒരു തടിയൻ പുസ്തകമാണെന്നുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടും എനിക്ക് അത് ഒരു കൗതുകവസ്തു തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. ആ പുസ്‌തകം ഇപ്പോഴും എന്റെ കൈവശം ഉണ്ടെകിലും ഞാൻ വായിച്ചത് കിൻഡിൽ പുസ്‌തകമായിട്ടാണ്. ഇതുതന്നെ ഒരു വിരോധാഭാസമായിട്ടാണ് എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയത്.

ഐതിഹ്യമാല ഇന്ന് മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ ഒരു മഹാസാഹിത്യകൃതി തന്നെയാണ്. കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ ശ്രീ ശങ്കുണ്ണി അവർകൾ ഇത് പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ഒടുവിൽ തുടങ്ങി ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ മൂന്നാം ദശകത്തിൽ പൂർത്തീകരിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന മലയാളഭൂമിയുടെ തവിടുപൊടിപോലും ഇന്ന് എങ്ങും കാണ്മാനില്ല. അദ്ദേഹം സംസാരിച്ചിരുന്നതും എഴുതിയതുമായ മലയാള ശൈലിപോലും ഇന്ന് ഏതാണ്ട് കാലഹരണപ്പെട്ടുകഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ന് തിരുവിതാംകൂറോ കൊച്ചിരാജ്യമോ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് മലബാറോ ഇല്ല. അദ്ദേഹം എളിമയോടെ 'തിരുമനസ്സുകൊണ്ട്' എന്ന് ഒരായിരംവട്ടം വിളിക്കുന്ന രാജാക്കന്മാരോ, ഉച്ചനീചത്വങ്ങൾ വെറും വസ്തുതകളായിരുന്ന ഒരു സാമൂഹികാവസ്ഥയോ, ഒന്നും ഇന്നില്ല. വാസ്തവത്തിൽ ഐതിഹ്യമാലയിലെ ചില ഉപന്യാസങ്ങളിൽ ആ കഥകൾ കടലാസിന്റെ കാരാഗൃഹത്തിൽ അടയ്ക്കപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ ഈ ലോകം അപ്രത്യക്ഷമായികൊണ്ടിരുന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനകൾ നമുക്ക് കാണ്മാനും കഴിയും.

ഇന്നൊരിക്കലും "ആ സ്ത്രീയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥർ" എന്ന പദപ്രയോഗം ഒരു മലയാളിയുടെയും നാവിലോ തൂലികയിലോ വിളയാടുകയില്ല. അതുപോലെത്തന്നെ "ആകെയൊരു ദോഷം ആ ദിശയിലെനങ്ങും ഉയർന്ന ജാതിക്കാർ താമസമില്ല എന്നത് മാത്രമാണ്" എന്ന് മണ്ടക്കാട് അമ്മൻ കോവിലിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നതും "ജന്മനാ അദ്ദേഹം ഹിന്ദുവായി ജനിച്ചതാണെങ്കിലും ബുദ്ധിസ്ഥൈര്യം പോരാത്തതുകൊണ്ടും ചിലരുടെ ഉപദേശങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടും അദ്ദേഹം ബുദ്ധമതം സ്വീകരിച്ചു" എന്ന് പള്ളിബാണപ്പെരുമാളെക്കുറിച്ച് എഴുതുന്നതും നമുക്ക് അചിന്തനീയമാണ്. നമ്മളിൽ പലർക്കും ഇതൊക്കെ ദഹനക്കേടുപോലും ഉണ്ടാക്കിയേക്കാം.

പക്ഷെ ഇതേപോലുള്ള മറ്റു സാഹിത്യകൃതികളെപ്പോലെത്തന്നെ ഐതിഹ്യമാല മൺമറഞ്ഞുപോയ കാലത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് ഒരു ജാലകമാണ്. ഇത് തന്നെയാണ് ഈവക പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ തുലവും വലിയ വൈശിഷ്ട്യം. നമ്മൾ ഓർക്കേണ്ടത്, എല്ലാ സാഹിത്യകൃതികളും അവയുടെ സ്വന്തം കാലത്തിന്റെ സൃഷ്ടികളാണെന്നതാണ്. ഇപ്പോൾ ഒരു ഐതിഹ്യമാല ഉണ്ടായെങ്കിൽ നിശ്ചയമായും ഈ കഥകളൊന്നുമായിരിക്കില്ല അതിൽ ഇടം നേടുന്നത് എന്നാണ് എന്റെ ഉറച്ച വിശ്വാസം. നാം ഇപ്പോൾ എഴുത്തുകയാണെങ്കിൽ ഉറപ്പായിട്ടും താഴ്ത്തപ്പെട്ട സമൂഹങ്ങളിലെ കഥകളും ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളും നമ്മുടെ ഐതിഹ്യമാലയിലെ താളുകളിൽ തിളങ്ങിയേനെ. വെറുതെ ബ്രാഹ്മണരുടെയും ക്ഷത്രിയരു���െയും മറ്റു ശക്തരായ മുന്നോക്ക ജാതിക്കാരുടെയും അവരുടെ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെയും കഥകൾ മാത്രമാവില്ല.

എന്നാൽ ഇനി ഒരിക്കലും തിരിച്ചുവരാൻ പോകുന്നതല്ലാത്ത ഈ ലോകത്തെ കുറിച്ച് എല്ലാ മലയാളികളും വായിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്. സ്വന്തം ഭൂതകാലം അറിയാത്ത ഒരുത്തൻ അവൻ്റെ ഭാവിയുടെയും മുന്നിൽ വെറും അന്ധനാണ്. സ്വന്തം വർത്തമാന ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും അവന് ദിശാബോധം ഇല്ല.

എനിക്ക് ആകെ ഒരു പരാതിയേ ഈ കൃതിയെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയാനുള്ളു. ഇതിൽ ഒരുപാട് കഥകളും മദ്ധ്യതിരുവിതാംകൂറിലേതും ചിലതൊക്കെ കൊച്ചിയിലേതും മലബാറിലേതുമാണ്. എന്റെ നാടായ തെക്കൻ തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെ ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളുടെ ഒരംശംകൂടി ഇവിടെ കാണ്മാനില്ല. വീര മാർത്താണ്ഡ വർമ്മ മഹാരാജാവിന്റെ കഥയോ പദ്മനാഭസ്വാമിക്ഷേത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളോ പോലും ഇല്ല എന്നതിൽ എനിക്ക് വിഷമമുണ്ട്.

കിൻഡിൽ പുസ്തകത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും ഒരു ചെറിയ കുറിപ്പ്. മലയാളത്തിലെ എല്ലാ പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലും വാക്കുകളെക്കാളും കൂടുതൽ ഉള്ളത് അക്ഷരപ്പിഴകളാണ്. ചുമതലപ്പെട്ടവർ ഇത് ശരിയാക്കേണ്ടതുമാണ്. സൗജന്യമായിട്ടല്ലല്ലോ ഇത് വായിച്ചത്!

Poorly edited book. even for a first edition. Lot of grammatical mistakes. And spelling mistakes too make their presence felt. I could have done a better job in editing this one.

Apart from that, the book showcases the old times in Kerala. Me, being from the God's Own Country, found it an interesting read because of the display of heritage and culture of my home land which was unknown to me till now. And the book mentions my hometown too. It was a goosebumps moment there.

Those who want to take in all the stories that are included in the book, you better have a paper and a pencil with you while you read. There are a few stories that are intertwined but mentioned in different chapters.

My home land is so full and rich of heritage and now I know some of it. Yayyyy.

Why-did-you-not-read-it-yet kind of a book. Started to read out of curiosity. One of the stories in the book--Kudamon Potti--was the inspiration for a recent Malayalam horror talkie, Bramayugam. Much cheaper to buy at Kindle stores. The book is full of fables, including the famous local Robin Hood, Kayamkulam Kochunni. The book does not respect the boundary of political correctness, as it glorifies the caste-based racial prejudice.

it was in my UP School days when i first read this book. all those childhood fantasies about rajahs , temples , indian culture was fulfilled by this single book . still remember those torn pages in this book which was my single contribituion.
the second reading happened after my school days , and it was when i understood the ligical fallacies & historical fantasies in this book ,
yet its a good pair evening time snack

Kottarathil Shankunny is one and only of his kind- collecting shading lores and reversing em to reality, pinpointing -places and descendant families where exactly they happened......... This amazing journey briging back to life, Kerala state's (South India) nearly extinct lores: Aithihyamala.

Its worth visiting the venues of Aithihyamala today, before they drift, aways for ever.

Having lost the ability to read lengthy Malayalam texts in original, I read the English translation of selected stories from this book by Leela James, published in three volumes by Hachtte India (which doesn't figure in the editions listed by Goodreads). Mine was an attempt at reliving some of these mysterious stories that one grew up with in Kerala of half a century ago. I wasn’t disappointed.

These narration of folklores are really good. Mainly he concentrates on the stories of Southern Kerala and ignores the Northern folklores. This may the only drawback to the otherwise excellent book. While reading the stories it may seem that "Elephant Stories" (Aana Kadakal) are nothing but repetition, however, the enthusiasm and earnestness of the author makes us ignore this small issue.

The history of kerala and the belief of malayalees depicted in a language that the natives cherish to read.It is a string of little stories of different pepole,places,gods and of course elephants that paints the imagination of generations.Like most of the indian villages the story of a place is associated with a the story of its temple.Most of the stories may challenge your reasoning but believe me , you will love to believe them.

I’m not a complete Malayali, but still this book appealed to me a lot. A wonderful collection of myths and legends of Kerala folklore, eight volumes in one big book, untranslated. It was a challenge to finish it, but finish I did. Magical and fun, and definitely re-readable, this is one brilliant book to read (if you know to read Malayalam). Five stars is too less, but since it’s the most one can give, I give that much.

This is the fairy tale book for most Malayali children and now accessible to non-readers of Malayalam. Packed with Kerala folklore, legends, myths and history of lands, Kings, elephants, magicians, sorcerers, gods and goddesses.

I was looking for any English translations of this book for last 20 years and with this enjoyed every 1160 pages! Could have be better translated though and could have been better if packed with some sketches or illustrations but nevertheless hats off to the effort.

I have read the first volume and it was nice though it is a little difficult to keep track of names kings etc. but it was a really good book with lots of information about gods own country aka Kerela . Took quite some time because i usually finish a book in a day
