Things We Never Said, has been a book that has been stuck in my mind since I read it. One of those books you just wish did not end. So, having the opportunity to have a catch up with the characters in that book is just genius.
I'm so relieved that this wrap up didn't go the predictable route. I read Things We Never Said very recently and throughout that compelling portrait of a complex marriage and its poignant rendering of grief, I was preoccupied with the worry that the wife's death was going to be a vehicle for an utterly predictable pair up... I'm always happy to see a writer pass up low-hanging fruit.
This short continuation not only continued to resist the easy pair-up, but showed, credibly how so often things that seem like the obvious resolution, just aren't. It also paid due homage to Sean and Catherine's marriage (you really must read the novel first before picking this one up) in that he neither "moved on" quickly nor with someone his wife had known.
I like that everyone got their happiness without muddying waters, while still acknowledging the potential for muddiness. Now that I think of it, this review is pretty muddy. Suffice it to say, this was a great continuation of a profoundly impacting story and my initial dread at reading this follow up out of fear that it was going to go in a predictable direction was unfounded.
This book tied up all loose ends to this two book series. It really pulled on the heart strings and made you think of your own personal experience with parents and family deaths. What could have been said, should have been said and then the regrets of not saying what’s in your heart. It’s sad for those times when things do come to light and you are aghast that you didn’t know that person at all. It was a lovely story.
I don't know if I'm disappointed or thrilled that the end of the last book didn't turn out quite the way you expect in this novella.
I read this in 40 mins - not much depth, but you can't expect much in 52 pages. The stories were good but I'd have preferred more character development given it takes place over 3 years.
Overall, read it if you've read Things We Never Said, but don't expect too much.
I was very excited that he did a follow-up, as “things we never said” left me wanting more. It was a good follow-up but I was a little disappointed in how it ended. It also felt too short. I wish it was another book or a little longer. Hopefully he’ll write another book or short story so that I get the ending I (personally) want. If not, the ambiguous ending to “things we never said” would have been better left as-is.
Whilst half of me was excited to read about what happened when the lady book finished, the other half said I should leave it as it was. This was just how I felt when I finished this addition too. It's clear from the intensity of the writing about the loss the characters have had that the author has been through something similar .
Lovely to revisit Sean and Maggie to find out what happens with them. Quick and easily read. You need to read the first - Things we never said, to get the benefit from this follow on.
Once again another brilliant book by the wonderful Nick Alexander. I don't think I've read one of his books - and I've read most of them - and been disappointed! A lovely "wrap up" to a lovely story. Thanks Nick, your the best
It was a nice idea to revisit the characters in Things we never said. I liked the way the author developed the characters. The plot running over three Christmases moved their individual lives on well in the confines of a short story.
This is a really cute tying up of loose ends after Things We Never Said. It's a little cheesy, Christmassy, a tiny bit sad and nostalgic but altogether cosy and feel-good.
This book is a sequel to Things We Never Said which is a WONDERFUL story. If this short story was less of a sequel than it was tying up relationships from THINGS WE NEVER SAID. I would have preferred a real sequel that developed some of characters
Cute little short story to “ tie up” the novel-THINGS WE NEVER SAID. This brief novella does answer questions as to “ what happened “ next. Didn’t end exactly as I’d thought. But glad there was closure.
Most of the time when you read a sequel it has nothing to do with the original version. I’d just like to thank you for completing my thoughts and giving us our very own happily ever after.
A novella ending the story of Nick Alexander's, Things We Never Said. Pleasingly tied up the storylines with a different ending than you might have come to expect from reading the first novel but that's fine because the knot or knots, were tied up pretty successfully!!! 😄
No spoilers here as you have to read the first book!!!
This small book follows on.I'm glad he never put mags together with him, it would feel like there was something there all them years if he did.he was faithful to his wife and did not think about being with another.not sure about Cora but at least this is a HEA
I really enjoyed this little book, it was lovely to know what happened to all the characters from "Things we never said". I am a sucker for a happy ending so this did not disappoint. ps I am glad the ending happened the way it did!
What a beautiful sequel to the Things We Never Said. I really enjoyed getting to see the characters several years out. Beautiful and not predictable. Highly recommend.
