Really great for getting a really complete overview of what astrology is, how it works, and how to understand your chart but loses points for a lot of "yikes" moments including but not restricted to:
- regressive personality descriptions based upon gender stereotypes (men's aggressive traits are theirs, but women's refer to what type of man they look for)
- outdated views on population & environment
- that awkward section where the author talked about the astrological contributions of ancient civilizations while simultaneously referring to them as primitive barbarians, nearly blatantly stating that it's amazing such stupid people could do something so smart
- that very awkward section where the author attributes all the "us" vs "them" evil in the entire world to radical Islam (and only it - all other religious/political issues are apparently fine)

I have a slightly older edition, so I don't know if updated versions are a little less sprinkled with moments that make you go YIKES. However, this is the best and most complete book on astrology, its history, and each sign + planet that I've found and it really is the only astrology book you'll ever need (except for the times you've got to do your own research if you want a less problematic description).

In print for nearly two decades, The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need truly stands up to its title. However, should you plan to make a career as an astrologer you will, of course, need further study. Beginning with the Sun signs and moving on through the remaining planets, as well as more obscure influences such as the Ascendant, Moon signs, Decanates and Cusps of each sign, the book is well thought out and the information presented in a logical and orderly manner In addition the author explains the steps necessary to erect a chart in simple terms.

Without including any un-necessary information Woolfolk includes everything that you need to get a decent idea of what each element in your chart means and provides an accurate method of putting all this information together in an easy to understand format. In addition, she describes a method of comparing one's chart to that of another, called Synastry, in order to determine their level of compatibility with one another.
Had the author stopped at this point, the book would still be an invaluable tool in and of its self; however Woolfolk has also included a plethora of miscellaneous information not found in other books on astrology including a detailed analysis of the amorous nature of each sign by gender, as well as advice on seducing an individual based on his or her Sun Sign. There's an entire chapter devoted to maintaining good health, with advice regarding a proper diet and a few words about each sign's erogenous zones.

For those who enjoy a little science to balance their magic, the book contains detailed astronomical information regarding each of the planets, as well as their mythological history and correspondences. In addition, the author has included the legend behind each of the signs of the zodiac, as well as a brief history of astrology and a comprehensive dictionary of terms. The charts in the back of the book which indicate in which sign each of the planets are in the zodiac through to the year 2025 also doubles as an almanac, an invaluable tool for Wiccans and Pagans who observe astrological hours in the timing of the spells and rituals.

Over all, The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need is a very good introduction to the topic of Astrology and contains all the basics needed to familiarize yourself with the principles of Astrology and get you started on erecting your own chart and understanding exactly what it means. That being said, should you decide to advance in your studies the book does not address the principles behind The Nodes of the Moon, The Part of Fortune, The Asteroids, or Retrogrades. However, it is an excellent reference for the casual reader and the serious student alike.

The title of this book could not be truer! I had the original purple first edition when I was only a teenager in high school, casting birth charts for all of my friends who thought this was so cool. I didn't even realize until many years later just how much more I knew about astrology than the average person, as result of reading this book.

In 2003 I moved into an apartment and in 2004 I moved out. At some point in all that ruckus I lost my book. This book is so useful, so valuable, and so essential that I bought it a second time, the updated blue cover with the additional CD.

When I started studying astrology, this was the first book I read. Very comprehensive but simply written and great for beginners who are just figuring out what sign their moon is in. The charts in the book are not always going to be the best indicator for planetary placements, so it's best to go to a site such as astro.com or astrology.com to get your natal chart. Then you can use the book to help you figure what all those planets mean.

This book is AMAZING! I use it as a reference ALL THE TIME! I wish it came in pocket size (lol!)

As a wanna be astrologer I find this information to be incredibly helpful and most importantly incredibly accurate. It has helped me better understand the basics of astrology and I'm not able to put together basic birth charts for friends and family with ease.

This book was really what the title stated....the only astrology book you will ever need. It was so informative, without being too wordy or all over the place. It goes into every aspect of astrology, (sun signs, moon signs, ascendant signs); categories often overlooked, but equally as important as the sun signs. It even went into detail about the characteristics if you are a cusp. Overall I loved the fact that it identified the person as a whole. "The Sun sign is the part of you that is most apparent on the surface; it is what others see. The Moonsign is the part of you that you see.Your Ascendant is the sign that reflects your outward demeanor and to a great extent determines how the outside world looks at you." Great read and book to return to often!

The best astrology book! I definitely recommend this if you're into astrology or if you're a beginner who wants to learn more because I found this extremely helpful. Everything I know about my signs, compatibility and chart was so accurate in here. Not only that though I still learnt so much reading this, I was introduced fo new ways to view your chart and what that means it was very eye opening. It's easy to follow and includes a ton of information about sun signs, moon signs, relationships, and planets. There's even tables showing you how to work out parts of your birth chart if you don't know it. Overall I extremely enjoyed this and will definitely be sharing it with people in the future.

Disappointingly narrow and outdated perspectives. The author's tendency to oversimplify complex concepts and make sweeping predictions based on visual characteristics feels archaic.

For example, suggesting that Scorpio ascendant predicts the loss of a first spouse - it not only lacks empirical support but also reinforces harmful superstitions.

The book can provide some basic insights for beginners, but it is impossible to recommend over more balanced and updated resources in the field.

Ms. Woolfolk's book was extremely helpful in learning about astrology and producing my own birth chart. Also, the information given on each category of the subject was insightful. This book is definately the only astrology book I'll ever need (not). Thanks Ms. Woolfolk

I might have a few minor nitpicks but overall I did enjoy and do recommend this Astrology book. It covers all the basics. In the middle I took an internet adventure watching and reading about more stuff online, because I plan to really delve deep into astrology. But i'm just beginning. I've already made a ton of connections between me and my spouse who passed away in 2021 and me and my parents as well as starting to understand myself more. Astrology is wonderful for self-reflection.

i have always been fascinated by zodiac signs and there background. this book is 600 pages of exactly that. the book gives a detailed description of each sign and their history. i was plesently surprised to see how many sections are in the book and how detailed the book is. the sections include: Sun sign astrology, Less well-known influences, Understanding astrology, Astrology in history and legend, Astrology in our time, An astrologers lexicon and Astrology tables for the years. Within those sections are piles and piles of knowledge about this. also in all of this information it also teaches you how to create your own calender's and understand your sign. this book has helped me understand a lot more about my sign and about myself. because this book is all information it is a lot to take in. i personally love this subject so i was very excited to finish the book. after finishing this book I've come to the conclusion that i will probably read this book several times. i'm determined to eventually memorize it. i would definitely suggest this book to anyone that is interested in astrology. the book definitely lives up to its name. this is a great book that is now one of my new favorites.

As others have noted, the tables are wrong. She claims to be doing Tropical Astrology, yet gives Sidereal Astrology tables! Way to confuse those of us new to Astrology! How did so many copies of this sell?

This author seemed unable to stop herself from making catty, stereotypical remarks about a few of the signs, even though she also says several times that it's unfair to judge people based solely on Sun sign or on one placement. The irony!

She mentions, "Now that you have created your chart...", yet there are never any instructions on where to create a chart! I see it says this book comes / came with a cd, but there wasn't one; there wasn't even a ripped part of the book, as if someone had stolen the cd.

So if it weren't from cobbled together sources online, I wouldn't have been able to create a chart.

That being said, the blurbs about the planets in the signs are useful, and so is the Houses section, so parts of the book can be referred back to as needed.

That's quite a conceited book title, considering how much of the book isn't even useful.

I highly suggest that people wanting to learn Astrology, look into finding another book.

I won't be reading anything else by this author, or publisher.

Summary: Great book. I think it might have been one that was given to me when I was 16. After more than 3 decades of learning, I reread and still think it's one of the best.

I'm not quite even sure how to review this. It's really comprehensive and does not stop at silly descriptions of the signs. I would say that if you're a complete novice you really do need to give the entire book a look through before plunging in. I think when I was young, I read it but was so overwhelmed that I did not really think through what Woolfold is saying.

You have to use all the houses, signs, and planets together along with the aspects to really understand a chart and even then you are really only getting to natal. It will take years of memorization and having all of these elements become second nature before you really are worth your salt in this area.

Still, after more than 3 decades and having studied a lot of stats and stats models, I am still amazed that the astrological chart is one of the best predictive models I have ever studied. It's worth the dedication if you are interested in this sort of stuff. This is a great place to start.

I can't believe this book sat on my bookshelf FOR YEARS and was actually my husband's before I "found" it this past weekend and devoured it. It really IS the only astrology book you'll ever need. I found a site through astrology.about.com and did my birth chart and with the help of this book was able to learn a lot about my personality. I even got a lot of my friends on twitter to do theirs. What I enjoyed the most was the descriptions of all the signs (Rising, Sun, Moon) and how they should be read and then each of the planets and their significance. I jumped around in this book because it's more of a reference manual, but I read all the major section except for the Houses of the zodiac which is next on my list.

If anything, this book is a ton of fun and absolutely fascinating. If you enjoy astrology, I highly recommend it! Pick it up, keep it on your shelf, and use it to examine all of your family and friends. I bet it's right in 90% of circumstances :)

Despite the book’s title, definitely not the only astrology book you’ll ever need, especially if you’re interested in deeper insights on one’s chart. As the author herself said, no book could ever be packed with all the information on astrology, but this one includes important info for those starting out, such as those regarding Sun, Rising and Moon signs. I feel as more space should have been given to aspects as they are the most important part for understanding the person’s chart and less space should have been given to tables with planetary positions as that can be easily googled nowadays.

The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need by Joanna Martine Woolfolk sets a high bar for itself. This book was initially published in the 1980s, and I was able to acquire an edition from 2001 from my local library. From what I can tell, there was another version published in 2010, but I cannot comment on the content that may have changed between editions.

Before I begin this review, I would like to reiterate that I am not a professional astrologer. While I do generally feel positively about this book, somewhat with a greater knowledge may feel differently.

This book is broken into seven different sections. The first part focuses on sun signs, with the second and third going beyond that in discussing different placements in an individual’s chart and the meanings of that. Part four provides a historical view on astrology, as well as brief explanations of ‘what is the story behind this sign’. Part five delves into different astrological ages. If you’ve been hearing a lot about The Age Of Aquarius, this is that that is about. Six provides a lexicon of terms, and part seven provides tables, so one could hypothetically draw up a chart without using Astro.com or other sites.

I personally enjoyed this book more than the last one I read on astrology (The Astrology of You and Me). My major complaint with that text as that it focused exclusively on sun signs. While that is important information, one should consider that there are other factors in play. Woolfolk does that. She spends a good deal of time discussing different placements and how they can impact an individual. I also appreciated the information she included about the decans of signs.

In section one, she includes a section called ‘sun signs in love’. I had somewhat mixed feelings about this. For example, I may have a water sun, but I have an air venus. Some of the advice dedicated toward my sun sign is impacted by that. Simultaneously, I don’t believe that if someone read the section for my venus and used that as a map to me, it would be helpful at all. These two things interact and should be looked at together.

Another issue with this section I had is slightly more nitpicky. Woolfolk takes a sign and says ‘the women of this sign is like this, the man is like that’. While I have surveyed different astrology groups, and I can say that people will hold different opinions depending on if they are talking about a Pisces man or woman, I don’t really feel that Woolfolk addresses that specifically. I think that is also important to note that gender is not always binary, so limiting things to man and woman is just that … limiting. Additionally, I feel Woolfolk could have used more gender neutral language in her descriptions of how one may go about wooing a sign. Not everyone reading this book is heterosexual, and I think that I would be very disappointed if that was not changed in a later edition.

Another issue I had with this book is that Woolfolk has a section on cusps – as in, if you are born at the beginning or end of your sign, you may have traits from that other sign. This very much upset my astrologer friend, who says that cusps only exist between houses. Considering Woolfolk’s history with astrology, I wonder if this is a newer understanding. I can understand why someone might feel that they relate to another sign more than their sun, or that not everything they read about their sun sign is applicable - there is certainly a bias in how people can present information sometimes – but that is because you have a full chart. You are not solely your sun.

This was not the lightest read, which was not a problem. I appreciated that Woolfolk addressed positive and negative aspects of different signs, while still keeping an even tone. In my experience looking up information elsewhere, some individuals may chose to focus a certain aspect of a sign to the exclusion of everything else. For example, when I try to find information about my rising, a lot of the information presented to me is about sexually appealing the authors find this placement; and that doesn’t help me in the slightest. Woolfolk doesn’t do that. While I would want to get an updated version, I think this is a book that I could and would revisit in the future.

This great astrology guide is chock-full of fascinating and accurate information. I’m definitely a true Gemini! The detailed how-to instructions for creating my own chart is an excellent tool. Since the book was written before astronomers nixed Pluto as a planet the charting was a little confusing at first, but for amateur astrology followers like myself it’s very insightful.

This book is SO HELPFUL. I was able to cast my chart with only a little difficulty but managed to do it. This book has a wealth of knowledge that 100% still applies today 15 years later. I got this book for $3 at a library book store and it was worth at least 10 x that! I know im going to be referring to this book a lot and as I get better, I might even cast horoscopes for my friends as gifts!

An excellent resource, but there are some things that aren’t covered or could use a lot more information on, such as the role of rising signs and Chiron in the chart.
