What Happened by Hillary Clinton | Conversation Starters
What Happened is a new memoir from presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. In What Happened, Hillary Clinton finally shares with the public her thoughts and emotions during a controversial presidential election that ended in her defeat by Donald Trump. Clinton shares the details of her campaign and how it felt to be the first woman to be elected as a candidate for a major party in the United States. She also shares how it felt to run against Donald Trump. She shares her thoughts on why she believes she lost the election, as well. Clinton hopes that these details will help Americans understand so that they can protect the future of democracy in America. What Happened is an eye-opening and intimate description of the 2016 election and its aftermath.
What Happened became a bestseller on Amazon in 2017. The New York Times called What Happened a “candid and blackly funny” narrative of the aftermath of the 2016 election. It is “raw,” invigorating, and an explanation of the current state of politics according to The Washington Post. Finally, NPR writes in their review that What Happened is “engaging.” They call Clinton charming and funny and say that her story will be important to history, even though some may disagree with her reasoning as to why she lost.

The title of the book is “What Happened” not “What Happened?”. This may seem like a distinction without a difference but, IMHO, it encapsulates Hillary’s likability problem. A question mark would suggest a more introspective approach, trying to figure it out rather than a declarative statement that she has all the answers and is trying to apportion blame.
Hillary Clinton is a polarizing figure - so I suspect this book will not change anyone’s mind regarding HRC and her claims regarding the 2016 presidential campaign. She ran, she lost, and the electoral college won the day. No one should begrudge her the right to put down on paper her thoughts about the campaign, but the book seems to be as much a therapeutic exercise to rationalize what happened to her, as it is a more dispassionate and analytical analysis of key events on the campaign.
I write this review as the Mueller report has recently being made public and the shenanigans inside the Trump campaign and now the White House have been laid bare. So, to no-one’s surprise, Clinton is probably correct in many (all) of her claims of Trumpian malfeasance, but it still comes across as sour grapes. She acknowledges her mistakes but they are given short shrift compared to the actions of Trump, Comey et al. Unfortunately, Clinton fails to identify the one element that did her in — rightly or wrongly she does not come across as a relatable person. This is not necessarily fair or even reflective of her true personality but that’s what happened.
I think this is a valuable book. I enjoyed the second half more when it broke down the reason for the loss and it pretty much confirmed what I had thought all along. Republicans stole that election through a smear campaign of dirty tricks, Comey's drama over a fake email scandal, and Russian Interference in the election. And now here we are. Instead of a positive step forward in American politics in 2016, we are entering the Fascist Phase here in 2024. I just laugh when I hear that people who voted for Trump are already getting screwed by Trump appointments and statements about the economy. If you voted for Trump, do not whine. You cannot say, I did not vote for whatever he is doing. Yes, you did. Yes, you did. This is a moment when America could have continued forward, now we are facing the beginning of the end. Oh, well. At least the world sees the true face of America and can prepare.
This was a wonderful book. I loved the fact that Hillary opened up about her family and her relationship with people. I mean, most people thought she was a mannequin before this book. Asides the 'political-jingle bells' that I do not want to delve into. Or maybe I will (at a later time), she showed some soul writing this book and I really appreciate it.
