The core elements of Chiropractic grew out of the thinking and philosophical concepts of D. D. Palmer, the founder of Chiropractic, and his son, B. J. Palmer. These principles were then compiled and transformed into thirty-three principles in R. W. Stephenson’s groundbreaking textbook in 1927.
This is a very interesting read for chiropractors and laypeople interested in this profession. What I liked the most is how inspirational it is to read the thoughts and motives of so many interesting professionals around the world. The book if packed with powerful quotations relating to every subject discussed. The 33 principles are presented and reflected upon, with one different subject being added between every 2 principles. In this way, every principle laid out by Stephenson is revised and deepended in an enriching discussion. By the end, you feel more inspired and thrilled about chiropractic, life in general and the prospect of taking action to make the world a better place. What I disliked about the book is that you can find a tendency toward segregationism and intolerance in the discourse of some of the authors, alluding to "real chiropractic" with the classic "my chiropractic is better that yours" attitude. As a chiropractor working in a country where we strive successfully to keep the profession united, I still look up to the ones who serve the public with love, yet respects all his fellow chiropractors and the unique understading of each and everyone of us. Delightful book. It is a great honor to be a small part of it =)
In my humble opinion I perceived this book to be the best so far to help in the understanding of Chiropractic philosophy. I read Stephenson in grad school and found it confusing, although, philosophy takes time, patience and thoughtfulness to examine and during grad school that is hard to come by as you are swept up in a full class load, midterms, finals, clinical hours and so on.
For any chiropractor who wants to build a dream practice where the patients understand who you are and what you do - for those still in school to those long in practice - you must read this book. Read just a chapter a day each morning before going to work and let the chiropractors assembled here speak life, experience, and fresh ideas into you.
