Today’s sexual confusion is not caused because the world glorifies sexuality, but because the world fails to see its glory. Through his Theology of the Body, St. John Paul II unveiled the beauty of God’s plan for human love. In 60 minutes, discover how the human body—in its masculinity and femininity—reveals who we are and how we are called to live.
Jason Evert has spoken on five continents to more than one million people about the virtue of chastity.
Jason earned a master’s degree in Theology, and undergraduate degrees in Counseling and Theology, with a minor in Philosophy at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He is a frequent guest on radio programs throughout the country, and his television appearances include Fox News, MSNBC, the BBC, and EWTN.
After speaking solo for several years, he teamed up with Crystalina, and the two married in 2003.
This is an absolute must read for not just Catholics but I think everyone. It goes deep enough to really start turning gears in your head but is brief enough to be very accessible. The goodness of the body and sexuality are made so abundantly clear, and JP2/Jason Evert do such a good job of explaining how we by our very physical nature reflect the goodness and holiness of the Lord. Sex- when rightly ordered- is the closest human beings can come to expressing the love of the Trinity and entering into the divine life. And that’s how it was made from the beginning! Being Catholic is so cool.
"Purity of heart is not found primarily in what we turn away from, but in Whom we turn toward."
“God's love is free, total, faithful, and life-giving.”
“In the Eucharist, Christ becomes one flesh with his bride, the Church, in order to give her spiritual and eternal life: "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.” Similarly, a husband gives his body to his bride so that she might receive the gift of life through their union.”
Just so helpful. Great tool to learn for the first time or to be reminded of the core truths of The Theology of the Body. ‘Bout to make all my friends who are not yet familiar with TOB take turns reading my copy, watch out 👀
Honestly, I would not recommend. If you’re new to TOB it’s a bit too much, but if you’ve had a good amount of TOB formation then I feel it doesn’t expand on the topics enough. It was a decent little refresher at the very least.
God does not call us to repress our desires and sexuality. He asks us to appreciate their value, understand them, and conform His will to them. Jason Evert picks apart Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body in a concise, yet beautiful way. When we understand the spousal meaning of the body, we understand the being that God created us to be. Our identity can be found in our bodies. When we can look at a member of the opposite sex not as an object for gratification, but as a beautiful person who’s identity is inscribed on their body, we are liberated from the tyranny of lust and our hearts are made to love. This book explains the way to get on this path.
When the great philosophical powerhouse, Lil Pump, was handed a picture book, he graciously accepted it and retorted, “This is good because I can barely read.” The idea of going through the totality of John Paul II’s series of 129 lectures is quite intimidating for someone like me, who has a regular IQ and a nonexistent theology degree. Thus, like Mr. Pump, I was fervently elated when I discovered this book because I, too, “can barely read.”
This book presents God’s plan for human love in a manner that highlights the major themes of John Paul II’s Theology of the Body without compromising or diluting the crux of his message. Jason Evert’s deep admiration and knowledge of John Paul II and his work are evident in the way he masterfully summarizes the saint’s teachings.
Picked this one back up after ignoring it for a while! It’s an awesome, easy-to-read synthesis for all of the main TOB teachings and topics. The title is a liar: you need much longer than an hour to read it. He quotes JPII throughout the whole thing so it feels like more of a summary than a commentary. Would recommend as an intro for anyone who wants to learn how to love like God intended!
Gotta love it, although I can't help but wonder who the audience of this book is and why is the target audience exclusively Catholic speed readers? Who in their right mind gets through this in an hour? And ABSORBS it?
Apparently JPII used to have two people read different books to him at once and he'd somehow absorb both of them. Well, I am not JPII I'll tell ya that. This book took me one hour about a month ago, followed by another hour today.
It's fine, I wish it was more than cursory, with a hair more nitty gritty practicality. But again, I'm not the target audience anyway, so I'm kinda asking for it in trying to call out a book that purports to condense hundreds of hours of papal audiences into a sixty minute chunk.
I was not expecting this to be as good as it was. Since this is a summary of and an interaction with Pope John Paul’s Theology of the Body, I expected it to have the same issues as any derivative work. That is not the case here. Evert’s contributions here far exceeded my expectations and make this book a valuable introductory resource on the Theology of the Body.
This book is a great introduction/summary of a truly life-changing and awe-inspiring subject. Human sexuality is a great gift. Wow.. If you need to get a hold of me in the future, I’ll be reading and learning more about TOB for the rest of my life
This is a good clear outline of John Paul ii's theology of the body with added insights from other of the Holy Father's work as well as others from the Catholic tradition.
For the layperson skip the pre-face. The main text really can be read in one hour and explains the basics of the theology of the body that anybody could understand and appreciate and apply to their life.
Instead of 1 hour, I finished the book in 3 hours. I am a slow reader. The book presents the theology of the body of Pope John Paul II in a very simplified manner. Jason did a great job here. There is more to the body that meets the eye.
Even though it is a fast read, it is a stellar introduction to the ToB, and will be a revelation to any who've yet to explore the true Catholic teaching on sexuality and marriage.
